In May 2006 we launched Saffron Screen with a flurry of
optimism and a flutter of nervousness – and an opening
weekend of Chicken Little, The White Countess and
A Matter of Life and Death with a Q&A with Oscarwinning cinematographer (and former Saffron Walden
resident) Jack Cardiff. Ten years, several awards, a superb
cast of staff and volunteers, numerous stellar Q&As and over
340,000 visitors later, we are excited to celebrate our 10th
birthday with you, our wonderful audience. See the next
page for some of our achievements from the last 10 years.
We are thrilled to bring you a preview screening of
Whit Stillman’s highly entertaining Jane Austen adaptation
Love & Friendship for our gala birthday celebration; join us on
Saturday 21st May (a week before the film comes out) for fizz,
cake and a witty and elegant film. We want to celebrate with
our younger audience too, so we have planned a Teddy Bears’
Picnic with a screening of Paddington for earlier in the day.
Our staff and volunteers have selected some of their favourite
films from our last ten years – and those which definitely deserve
to be seen again on the big screen – which will be shown across
the programme at the prices we charged in 2006: £5 for
adults, £3.50 for youngsters. Look out for the Staff Pick
icon and join us for a celebration of the last ten years.
We are thrilled to be working with the Town Team
and Saffron Walden Town Council for Cinema in the
Square on Saturday 28th May – a FREE screening
of John Waters‘ Hairspray in Saffron Walden’s
Market Square, followed by music and dancing.

sCreen TesT New England, 1630. Banished by the church, a Puritan English family
moves to an isolated plot by an ominous forest. Strange and unsettling things happen:
the animals turn malevolent, the crops fail and the baby disappears. A disturbing and
atmospheric examination of the age-old concepts of witchcraft, black magic and possession,
stunningly written, acted and directed. Beautiful, bleak and deeply unnerving.

CAsT Alice Lowe, Dolly Wells, Tom Cullen, Rosa Robson
sCreen TesT A terrific British comedy. Two sisters escape from a bungled lorry theft and
wind up pretending to be ‘beat poets’ at a camping retreat in the Black Mountains of Wales.
Here they make a mess of putting up tents, hear lots of bad poetry and fall for the charms of
the same man. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

direCTor Duke Johnson, Charlie Kaufman
voiCes David Thewlis, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tom Noonan
sCreen TesT From the mind of Charlie Kaufman (Being John Malkovich, Eternal
Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) comes this tender, touching black comedy, filmed entirely
in breathtaking stop-motion animation. A self-obsessed motivational speaker finds escape
from the mundanity of his life through a chance meeting with the unassuming Lisa. A
gorgeously odd film about love, pain, solitude and humanity.

Fri 13th & sat 14th 8pm
direCTor Ben Wheatley
CAsT Tom Hiddleston, Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons, Elisabeth Moss
sCreen TesT Wheatley’s adaptation of JG Ballard’s 1975 dystopian satire is a heady
cocktail of shmoozing, sex and excess set against a backdrop of class warfare. Dr Robert
Laing (Hiddleston) moves into a brutalist high-rise tower of luxury apartments, a building
that operates as a microcosm of the society outside its walls and which slowly unravels into
savage chaos. Boldly funny and true to Ballard’s anarchic vision.

CAsT Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Gal Gadot
sCreen TesT Following his titanic struggle against General Zod, Superman is seen as a
threat to humanity and Bruce Wayne dons his mask and cape to challenge the Man of Steel. In
classic comic book fashion the two giants clash on an epic scale until a greater danger threatens
Metropolis, demanding their combined efforts. Dark and dramatic, see this as much for Wonder
Woman’s silver screen debut as for the superhero showdown.

taking us through one long, stressful day for two senior officers (Rickman and Mirren) who
order a missile strike against a group of terrorists in Kenya. As the mission escalates, a

modern warfare. A polished and nail-biting drama.

opulent drawing rooms of 18th-century English society, this deliciously sharp comedy

acerbic film.

When she is assigned to report on Alexander, an idealistic Communist politician, the last
thing she expects is to fall for him. Faced with an impossible choice between love and duty,

sCreen TesT Roy (Shannon) is a father desperate to protect his uniquely gifted eightyear-old son in this gripping take on the sci-fi movie, which proves once again that director
Jeff Nichols is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time. As father and son go
on the run, an intense chase ensues as they are hunted down by a mysterious cult and a
clandestine government agency – the outcome of which could bring about a world-changing
event. A genre-defying thriller redolent of early Spielberg.

sCreen TesT This free-form biopic of Miles Davis shows the jazz great in the 1970s as
he attempts to recover his new session tape from music producers. Cheadle gives a brilliant
performance, full of attitude, as he explores both the man and the myth, facing his heroin
addiction and violence against women as well as his pioneering brilliance. Using flashbacks
and a loose, improvisatory style (akin to jazz itself), the film effortlessly evokes the period as
well as Davis’ proud swagger and turbulent life.
