PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME
Dear Parents/Guardians, Friends and Students of SAC,
It is with much pleasure that I welcome you to the
2016 school year.
Ms Paddy McEvoy
PRINCIPAL
In a special way I welcome the many new families
who have joined our school community. I hope that
all of our new students will soon experience the true
meaning of Mercy hospitality, and begin to feel at
home at St Aloysius College. I am sure that they will
discover the many rich experiences which SAC has
to offer them both within and outside of the regular
curriculum.  Continued on page 2.

outlined the process on how to
nominate and the sports available for
Term 1, 2016. This same document
was also emailed to all students.
New students also received this
information in their enrolment packs.
Nominations opened on
Monday 30 November 2015 and will
close Monday 8 February.
Nominations will not be accepted

Principal’s Welcome continued...
Pope Francis has announced 2016 as the Jubilee Year of
Mercy, so our charism will be highlighted throughout the
Church this year. In the homily at our Opening Mass for
staff last week, we were asked to reflect on this: “If you let
your heart be captured by mercy; if you sit still long enough
and allow God’s infinite mercy to transform your heart;
if you open the doors of your heart to mercy, you will be
transformed, and the world will be a different place.”
Welcome to New and Returning Staff
We are pleased to welcome Gabrielle Cronin, Lucy Dilger,
Pamela Edwards, Jessica Furfari, Skye Harper, Lauren
McGrechan, Stacey Parker and Ivan Yen to the staff of
SAC. We also welcome back returning staff Courtney Kerr,
Phoebe Koch and Kellie Osborn.
During the break, extensive work has been carried out
around the College. An upgrade of the Catherine McAuley
Library has created a much more open and spacious feel,
and the installation of self-checking machines will allow
students easy access to the library’s resources. Renovations
have also taken place in the Art area. A nature play area
has been created on the convent lawns for the enjoyment
of our youngest students, and new LED screens have
been installed in many of the classrooms. All families are
welcome to take a closer look at these facilities at our Open
Day on Monday 7 March 2016.
The first SAC Newsletter is an opportune time to remind
parents of the importance of good communication
between the College and parents. We communicate with
you regularly via the newsletter which is available every
fortnight, usually on a Friday (apart from this first edition),
from our website: www.sac.sa.edu.au The newsletter is an
excellent snapshot of the life of the College and a useful
reminder of significant events in our calendar and I
encourage you to take the time to view it on the website
regularly.
May you and your family enjoy a very happy and successful
year at St Aloysius College.

In addition to this first edition, the SAC Newsletter will be available on our
website (www.sac.sa.edu.au) at fortnightly intervals, usually on Fridays,
commencing Friday 12 February.
STUDENT SUPERVISION
As a school we have what the law defines as a 'duty of care' towards the
students enrolled. While the courts recognise that accidents cannot be
totally prevented, schools are charged with the responsibility of ensuring
the type of supervision which a normal parent would provide, considering
the age of the student and the activity in which she is engaged. I would
like to remind parents and students about several points which arise from
the school’s 'duty of care' 1.
Students will be supervised within the school grounds from 8:20am
on each school day.
2. Students are supervised at recess and lunch times.
3.
No student is allowed to leave the school ground during the day
without written permission from her Class Teacher.
4.
For safety purposes, students are not permitted to use the
playground equipment unless supervised by a teacher. This rule
applies at all times, including before and after school.
5.
When dismissed in the afternoon, students are expected to leave
the school grounds immediately and proceed directly home.
Students staying for activities organised by the school, such as sport
or drama practice, will be supervised.
6.
When a student is absent from school, parents are requested to
telephone the school by 9:00am on that day to advise the school of
the likely length of absence. Parents will be contacted if the school
has not been advised. On their return to school after an absence,
students are required to bring an explanatory note signed by one
parent to the Home Class Teacher.
Students who need to stay in the city after school for whatever purpose
must bring a note from their parents indicating where and for how long
they intend to be in the city.
These measures ensure that both parents and staff are able to exercise
their legal responsibilities for the students in a way that ensures a
responsible degree of safety.

WELCOME 2016
We welcome the new students and staff joining us this year and
hope that your time at St Aloysius College is enjoyable, fulfilling
and rewarding.
Excellent Year 12 Results
I will give more details in the next SAC Newsletter on the
achievements of the ‘Class of 2015’, but I would like to let you
know that they have continued the tradition of academic
excellence at St Aloysius College.
Congratulations to the Dux of 2015 Maryam Khan who
achieved an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) of 99.65;
this is a fantastic, well-deserved result. Almost 100% of SAC
students successfully achieved their SACE and we offer special
congratulations to all of last year’s Year 12 students. Our students
received a total of eleven (11) Merit Certificates. St Aloysius
College will hold a special assembly to recognise the outstanding
results of these students and to hear from them about the factors
that contributed to their success. Merit Certificate winners will
receive their certificate in a ceremony at Government House.
Over forty two percent (42.6%) of our Year 12 students achieved
an ATAR placing them in the top 20% of all Australian students.
Seventy eight percent (78%) of all grades achieved by our
students were A or B grades.
Details of tertiary applications will be provided in the next SAC
Newsletter.
‘Meet the Teacher’ Evening for Reception to
Year 8 Parents
You will receive a letter about the ‘Meet the Teacher’ evening
on Monday 8 February from 7:00pm to 8:15pm. This is an
opportunity for Reception to Year 8 parents to meet their
daughter’s Home Class teacher in their classroom and to hear
about the year’s program and special features.
Student and Family Information Sheets
To ensure that we have the latest student and family information
details, particularly emergency contact information and who to
contact in the case of an accident, it is very important that we
keep this information up to date. In the first few weeks of Term
1 you will be issued with a copy of the information we currently
hold in our computer system. It is important that you check this
information very carefully, make amendments as needed and
then return it promptly to us.
Security and Visitors Badges
St Aloysius College, in line with many other schools and
businesses, requires all people coming onto the school property
during the school day to first report to the SAC Office in the
main foyer to sign in and to wear a visitor’s badge whilst on
the school property. This procedure operates from 8:45am to
3:00pm. During the school day it is usually only possible to enter
the property through the Wakefield Street doors. If you are in
the school grounds without a badge you will (hopefully) be
approached and asked to immediately report to the SAC Office.
Please do not try to rush past the SAC Office desk without getting
a visitor’s badge, even if the staff are a little busy, as the safety of
students is very important to us and unidentified strangers pose
a serious threat to everyone. Whilst we are sorry if this practice
inconveniences parents and visitors coming to the school, we hope
you will understand our reasons for implementing this procedure the safety of our students.
I hope that this is a successful year for all of our students and their
families and I look forward to meeting parents at the various events
in this first term.

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (ADMIN)
Student Absence &
Lateness
When a student is absent from school or
running late, parents are asked to telephone
the dedicated student absentee line on
8217 3213 or SMS 0407 724 721 by 9:00am
on that day to advise the school of the likely
length of absence. Parents will be contacted
if the school has not been advised.
Upon their return to school after an absence, students are asked
to bring a note to the Home Class Teacher signed by a parent/
caregiver explaining the student’s absence. Your assistance is
appreciated.
SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS
Primary and Secondary classes, in
addition to other groups of students, will
be photographed either on
Friday 12 February or Friday 18 February.
If you wish to purchase photos, money
for this should be brought to school on
the day the photos are taken.
More information, together with the
order envelopes, will be sent home early
this week.

CURRICULUM NEWS
Welcome to the 2016 school year,
particularly to the families who are new
to St Aloysius College. Beginning a new
year is exciting, full of possibilities, new
challenges and the development of
skills and understandings. The students
who embrace the opportunities that are
offered, who see challenges as a step in
positive learning and who willingly and
resolutely approach their studies are the
ones who will achieve satisfaction and
growth.
• Year 6 and 7 students are generally
expected to spend about one hour
on homework each day from Monday
to Thursday inclusive. Homework
tasks may involve a range of
activities, including reading. A home
reading program is encouraged for
all students in the Primary years.
• Homework at Year 8 and 9 would total
about one hour, averaging three or
four subjects per night in most cases.
• Homework at Year 10 would, in
most cases, total about one and a
half hours, averaging three or four
subjects per night.
• Homework in Years 11 and 12 is
governed by the requirements
of individual subjects. Students
would be expected to program a
total of about two to three hours of
homework per day.
The student diary is an important
tool for communication between
school and home, as well as a place
to record homework and due dates
for assignments. Teachers will check
the diary on a regular basis and we
ask you to check and sign the diary at
least once a week. The diary is a study

Sacramental Program
2016
The Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Eucharist and
Confirmation) enable people to become members of and
participate within the Catholic Church community. The
Sacrament of Reconciliation is a sacrament of healing.
During 2016, students will have the opportunity to prepare
and celebrate the Sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist
and Confirmation. The school will be supporting students
and their families in learning about Sacraments through
the Religious Education program, according to the Rite
of the Catholic Church. Parents will be asked to attend
some meetings during the year as part of this preparation.
The next SAC Newsletter will provide details of future
parent meetings and Sacramental celebrations.
