Autumn/Winter 2014/2015 MAGAZINE # 27-2014 Knitting ABC SPECIAL TERMS SKP: Slip 1, knit 1, psso – Slip 1 stitch knitwise to right-hand needle without working it and hold yarn in back, knit next stitch, using left-hand needle pass the slipped stitch over the knit stitch. SK2P: Slip 1, knit 2 sts together, psso – Slip 1 stitch knitwise to righthand needle without working it and hold yarn in back, knit next 2 stitches together, using left-hand needle pass the slipped stitch over the stitch obtained. M1K: Make 1 knitwise (inc) – Lift strand between needles to left-hand needle and knit strand through the back loop, twisting it to prevent a hole. M1P: Make 1 purlwise (inc) – Lift strand between needles to left-hand needle and purl strand through the back loop, twisting it to prevent a hole. Yo: Yarn Over – Bring yarn forward and wrap it around the right-hand needle, knit or purl next stitch as indicated by pattern st. If purling the next st, wrap yarn all the way round the right-hand needle so the yarn is back in front where it needs to be, then purl next st. K1 tbl: Knit 1 through back loop – Knit 1 stitch through its back loop, inserting the needle into the stitch from the right-hand side. P1 tbl: Purl 1 through back loop – Purl 1 stitch through its back loop, inserting the needle into the back of the stitch from the left-hand side. SPECIAL TECHNIQUES GRAFTING: This technique is used to join two pieces of knitting when edges are not bound off. Place sts to be grafted onto 2 needles, with wrong sides together and with needle points facing to the right. Using yarn needle, insert into first st on front needle as if to purl, leaving st on needle. Insert into first st on back needle as if to knit, leaving st on needle. * Insert needle into first st on front needle as if to knit, slipping st off needle, then into next st on front needle as if to purl, leaving st on needle. Insert into first st on back needle as if to purl, slipping st off needle, then into next st as if to knit, leaving st on needle. Rep from * until all sts have been grafted. THREE-NEEDLE BIND OFF: (Seaming 2 pieces together as you bind off) Place the sts of pieces to be joined on separate needles, (or each end of a circular needle), held one behind the other, with right sides facing each other, in left hand; with a third needle, k2tog (one from the front needle, one from the back needle – one st on right-hand needle), * k2tog (two sts on right-hand needle), bind off one st in usual manner; rep from * to end. For a decorative seam on right side, work with wrong sides facing each other.
