Marin, Superintendent Dear Parents & Community Members: members spotlight how they use math and science in their careers and their everyday lives. Middle school students created career portfolios, and at the high school course offerings have been aligned to career clusters to enable students to concentrate their efforts in the field they would like to pursue upon graduation. We made it through another long frigid, Western Pennsylvania winter and as you read this letter, Spring is finally upon us! Although we have had to endure sub-zero temperatures, school closings, and numerous two hour delays, I am happy to report that the students, staff, administration, and school board members in the Hempfield Area School District have been extremely busy and productive in the accomplishment of many goals throughout the current school year. School Safety & Security: We have focused a great deal of attention on improving school safety across the district. New surveillance cameras and security software are being installed in all of our schools. Exterior doors at the high school are being re-keyed. Preparations are underway for the renovation of the entrance to the high school. This project will begin this summer and completion is expected in October. The administrative team participated in a National Incident Management System (NIMS) Refresher at Hempfield Emergency Management in February. NIMS is a systematic, proactive approach to guide departments and agencies to work together to manage incidents involving all threats and hazards. Our next training will be Multi-Hazard Planning for Schools, sponsored by the Pennsylvania State Police and the Office of Homeland Security in April. We are also beginning preparations for an active shooter simulation in August for our entire staff, before the students return to school. This issue of Headlining Hempfield spotlights some of the initiatives that have taken root. I am extremely proud of the strides we have made in working toward articulation between K-12 education, the colleges and universities, and the workforce. Below I have highlighted some of the initiatives that are going to better prepare our students for what lies ahead upon graduation: Westmoreland County Forum for Workforce Development: Westmoreland County Superintendents have joined forces with industry representatives to connect education, workforce quality, and economic development to prepare our students for the occupations that will be available to them in the future. I am a member of the steering committee which meets on a monthly basis to plan ways to break down the barriers between industry and education with the ultimate goal for each group to gain an understanding of one another’s challenges and to open the door for collaborative opportunities. Some of the initiatives in which we have engaged include: Cyber Safety: Safe use of technology is an ongoing concern. Attorney Anthony Bompiani made arrangements for James Dill, retired Chief Deputy of the Office of the Pennsylvania Attorney General, to speak to students, teachers, administrators, and parents. His presentation focused on the crimes of sexting, sextortion, and cyber bullying. He provided tips on how parents and the community can work together to prevent cyber-bullying and sexting from affecting our youth. March Arts: Throughout this issue you will read articles about many of the fine arts initiatives occurring across the district. The creativity of our staff and students never ceases to amaze me! We hope you enjoyed Humans of Hempfield spotlighted on the cover. To see more of our students’ creations please visit the the blog: http://humansofhempfieldblogspot.com Articulation Agreements for College Credit in the High School: We have worked in conjunction with Westmoreland County Community College (WCCC) and Seton Hill University to develop articulation agreements. Our high school students will reap the benefits as they now have the opportunity to earn college credits for many of their high school classes. Our own Hempfield teachers will teach these classes and our students will have the advantage of entering college, having fulfilled some of their course requirements. As we move into the flurry of activities that occur each spring, I look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events including the musical Mary Poppins which will run from April 22nd through April 25th at Hempfield Area High School. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have suggestions, questions, or concerns. You can reach me by email at [email protected] or by phone at 724-850-2231. As always, thank you for your support of the Hempfield Area School District. STEM Premier: The Hempfield Area Board of School Directors just approved an agreement to offer access to STEM Premier free of charge to our students in ninth through twelfth grade. STEM Premier will allow our students to showcase their accomplishments in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics by building an individualized electronic portfolio which may be viewed by colleges, universities, and corporations. Sincerely, Barbara J. Marin, Ed. D. Science, Technology, Engineering, Math (STEM): As part of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit (AIU) Math Science Collaborative, a group of K12 teachers and administrators participated in team activities and corporate visits to Alcoa Research & Development and PPG Industries. Since our original group was so successful in the implementation of projects, the AIU extended an invitation to Hempfield Area to send a second team to participate this year. A group of middle school teachers and administrators will delve deeper into strengthening the math, science, and technology education curriculum to better prepare students for the workforce demands that they will face in the future. Hempfield Area School District Superintendent of Schools Counseling for Career Success: The Westmoreland-Fayette Workforce Investment Board and the United Way of Westmoreland County partnered with the Hempfield Area School District to strengthen career preparation for our K-12 students. Updated software at the elementary level enables elementary students to begin exploring careers. Some of the elementary schools also hold Math Science Blasts in which parents and community 12 Hempfield Area School District Hempfield Students Pilot Chromebooks in the Classroom Chromebooks are laptops designed to be used primarily while connected to the Internet, with most applications and documents stored in the “cloud.” Hempfield Area School District piloted a program across the district to gather information from teachers and students regarding their impact on teaching and learning. Each elementary building has been given thirty Chromebooks that teachers can sign out to use in their classrooms. Students use them for applications such as Study Island, Reflex Math, and Lexia Core 5, as well as to complete research projects and presentations. Using Chromebooks, Mrs. Kristy Pollak’s tech-savvy third graders at Stanwood are collaborating with Google Drive and Edmodo, a social learning platform that is similar to Facebook, but in a safe and controlled environment appropriate for school. Kidblog and Google Blogger, kid-friendly publishing tools to help students publish writing safely online, are among the many other applications elementary students are using. At the middle school level, Mrs. Tammy Sige, Harrold English teacher, uses Chromebooks weekly to review power vocabulary and literature based vocabulary on Quizlet . The students also use them to publish essays and complete their library accelerated reading tests. “It is awesome to be able to do research when a teachable moment presents itself,“ said Mrs. Sige. Math students are using them for computer programs such as ALEKS and Tenmarks to review and reinforce math concepts. Mrs. Teresa Graziotto’s math students at Harrold like the convenience of using the Internet while in the classroom instead of going to the computer lab. Chromebooks are used extensively at the High School in the Math, Science, English, and World Language Departments. Ms. Shannon Klosky uses a graphing application with her math students. They are able to see first-hand the effect of different variables on the equations. Various test preparation websites are also used to prepare students for the PSAT, SAT, and Keystone exams. Science department teachers incorporate the Chromebooks into their lessons by graphing data, reading online textbooks, conducting research, using online tutorials, and completing science simulations. Although Microsoft Office is taught in the business department, Chromebooks have been incorporated into the curriculum to teach students about Google Drive and Google Apps. Students take electronic notes, collaborate on projects, review each other’s projects, and share their comments. It is the district’s goal to continue to integrate technology across the K-12 schools in order to create a more personalized, collaborative and efficient educational environment. In addition, educational content is moving towards a digital format with a large variety of resources now being readily available to teachers and students on the web. According to Mr. Cory Cullen, High School English Teacher, “Communication, collaboration and utilizing access to information are the twenty-first century skills that students need, and Chromebooks help facilitate that learning.” Hempfield Expands “College in the High School” and “Dual Enrollment” Opportunities for Students Hempfield Area School District is working together with Seton Hill University and Westmoreland County Community College to expand the opportunity for eligible juniors and seniors to earn college credits. “College in the High School” and “Dual Enrollment” provide students with an opportunity to get a head start on taking college courses while still in high school. These dual enrollment opportunities will be in addition to the Laroche College offerings that are already in place. The programs also help students make a smooth and successful transition to college by giving them a preview of college-level academic work, at a fraction of the cost of regular college tuition. • College in the High School allows students to take college-level courses that have been approved by the respective college/university in the familiar environment of their own high school. Credit for the course is awarded on both the high school and college/university transcript. • Dual Enrollment gives high school students the opportunity to take college-level courses at the respective college/university campus or online. Credit for dual enrollment courses are awarded on the college/university transcript and students are enrolled in both the high school and the postsecondary institution. The Seton Hill University and Westmoreland County Community College courses will be made available to students in the 2015-2016 school year. Students interested in this opportunity should see their guidance counselor for more information. 13 Hempfield Area School District Hempfield Competitive Cheer Squad Qualifies for State Competition The Hempfield Area Competitive Cheerleading Squad had a fantastic 2014-2015 season. The team, under the direction of Head Coach Ms. Ashley Contristano and assisted by Ms. Shannon Klosky and Ms. Allison Iksic, consists of thirteen cheerleaders in grades nine through twelve. The cheerleaders began working to develop their routine and condition for the season in June of 2014. Their diligent work yielded excellent results as the team took the mat at the WPIAL competition in January. The squad placed fourth in the Small Division out of sixteen teams and earned the seventh highest score overall in the WPIAL's District VII. This allowed them to earn a spot at the PIAA State Competition in Hershey. The coaches and squad are extremely pleased with these results, as the squad was created only three years ago and has continued to develop skills and strengths to reach and exceed goals set. The coaches give much of the credit to the team captains, Keri Kintigh and Rylie Rusnica, as well as senior leaders, Marley Lucas and Haley Miscovich, who helped to lead the squad through a successful season. Additional squad members include juniors Riley Ritson, Halie Ankeny, Savanna Dadisman, and Alexis Hepler, sophomores Mia Bengel, Shana Walkmeyer, Alison McVay, and Sydney Ruble, and freshman Aleah Cohen. The squad's achievements are noteworthy and have set a new standard for years to come. To add to their success, all four senior cheerleaders will be cheering in their post-secondary education at universities and colleges. Spartan Spirit!!! The student section was filled to capacity for the Boys’ Basketball WPIAL playoff games 14 Hempfield Area School District High School Self-E Show a Success High School Self-E picture on display at the museum For almost three decades, Hempfield Area School District has had a wonderful relationship with the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. The partnership that is shared recently resulted in many students from the district having the opportunity and honor to display their artwork at the museum. Joan McGarry, Director of Education at the museum, visited the high school and middle school classes to discuss the history of self-portraiture and inspire students to create a work of art that is not your average duckface selfie. At the high school level, students were asked to redefine (and re-spell) the Self-E to be a positive thing, with the “E” in Self-E representing Endorsement, Empowerment, Expression, and Emotion. According to high school art teacher, Mrs. Emily Daignault, “the in-class discussions alone were as valuable as the finished products.” Fifth graders at Stanwood Elementary worked with a parent to create a “family selfie” representing what family means to them. Rhiannon Kelly, West Hempfield Middle School student, poses with her “selfie” Eighth grade students in Mrs. Jennifer Busato’s West Hempfield Middle School classrooms explored many diverse directions of self-expression in their drawings with great success! Twenty-six artists were selected to have their self-portraits exhibited. The self-portrait unit culminated with an eighth grade field trip to the museum to view the show and take part in several hands-on stations that introduced the students to the museum’s collection. WIRC Competition The annual Westmoreland Interscholastic Reading Competition (WIRC) was held at Seton Hill University on March 9 & 10, 2015. Teams from surrounding school districts competed to test their comprehension skills on the selected book titles from this year’s reading list. The team from Hempfield Area High School, supervised by Mrs. Nicole Owens, won first place out of forty-two teams. West Hempfield Middle School was represented by two teams under the leadership of Mrs. Michelle Ulery, Mrs. Lisa Socrates, and Mrs. Cathy Adamson. Both middle school teams placed in the top ten with second and eighth place finishes out of forty-one teams. Congratulations to everyone for their tremendous effort. Stanwood Elementary students and families also created “selfies” that were displayed at the art exhibit. Kindergarten students posed as super heroes and took selfies using Google Chromebooks, each explaining what made them “super.” Staff members also participated by submitting family selfies that were included in a “family selfie” sketchbook. Hempfield’s Art Department is grateful to have the Westmoreland Museum of American Art as a tremendous educational resource in the community! High School Students Skype with Author Ellen Hopkins High School Team Places First The high school library recently hosted an after-school book discussion with best-selling young adult author, Ellen Hopkins. The students spoke with Ms. Hopkins via a laptop and projector using Skype, and had an opportunity to ask her questions about her books and writing career. A discussion of her latest novel, Rumble, followed the Skype session. Ellen Hopkins is the author of eleven best-selling young adult novels and two adult novels. Program Launched at Hempfield Area High School Hempfield Area High School is excited to launch the STEM program for the class of 2017. STEM is the collaborative integration of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math through the interaction of all disciplines to produce competitive students who can apply skills learned in the classroom to the modern day global workforce. Hempfield Area has formed a team of teachers including Mrs. Lisa Blahovec (Mathematics), Miss Ashley Contristano (Language Arts), Mr. Doug Cook (Sciences), and Mr. Craig Siniawski (Technology Education), who have participated in a year of training and preparation for the initiative to become a reality for Hempfield Area students. The team hopes to encourage students to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to real life situations addressing twenty-first century challenges, discovering solutions to complex problems, and providing feedback through reflective and informative communication. STEM requires students to go beyond acquisition of knowledge, encouraging them to not only understand the foundational subject matter, but more so, to apply the knowledge learned. This program aims to teach students adaptability, complex communication and social skills, non-routine problem solving, self-management, self-development, and systems thinking. Students will explore the value of utilizing the “known” to discover the “unknown.” STEM was introduced to the class of 2017 in a large group assembly. Interested students submitted applications which the committee analyzed and scored according to a predetermined rubric. Thirty students were selected to take part in the STEM pilot program. They will explore the STEM skills, as well as participate in job shadowing and career-based seminars throughout their junior and senior years to support their future career choice and inspire a field of study that maximizes their strengths. Hempfield Area High School is very excited to have partnered with eight corporations and universities thus far, and hopes to gain the support and partnership with others in the future. The team looks forward to the program’s success and future growth, knowing that in developing these skills, Hempfield Area will continue to enhance the educational experience of its students. Science National Honor Society Members Work with Elementary Students Pasta Bridge Teams Have Another Successful Year Members of Hempfield’s Science National Honor Society (SNHS) are visiting the elementary schools to introduce basic chemistry concepts to second grade students. The SNHS members are presenting scientific demonstrations in an effort to generate an interest in science to the younger students. Two Hempfield Area High School teams competed in the annual Carbone's Pasta Bridge Contest held in March. A team of juniors (Drew Brannon, Hunter Maholic, Ty McEliece, Chase Pastor, and Nick Winter) claimed first place with their bridge holding a total weight of 87.6 lbs! The senior team of Jenn Keefer and Alyssa DePippo placed seventh out of thirty-five teams, with their bridge holding a weight of 15.4 lbs. Hempfield Area High School now holds the top three weight records in this contest: 109 lbs, 87.6 lbs, and 43 lbs. Both teams did a tremendous job. Their results represent a month and a half of work during their activity periods, as well as after school. Mary Poppins Comes to Hempfield Members of SNHS tie-dye t-shirts with second graders at Stanwood Elementary School Wind’s in the East, and we all know what that means! The iconic British nanny, Mary Poppins, is set to fly over the rooftops and into the auditorium at Hempfield Area High School Wednesday, April 22 through Saturday, April 25, 2015. The cast of eighty seven student performers are aged seven through eighteen, all from various schools in the Hempfield Area School District. In March, members of the cast, crew and orchestra, attended a “Mary Poppins Triple Threat Intensive” workshop run by the internationally recognized Broadway Dreams Foundation. Guest artists from the Broadway cast of Mary Poppins, professional musicians with Broadway and regional experience, and Seton Hill University professors, worked with the students to develop their skills and gain an appreciation for the process of producing live musical theater. Performances are at 7:30 each evening, along with a matinee on Saturday at 2:00. All tickets are $15 and will be on sale Monday, March 23, through April 25, 2015, in the High School auditorium lobby. This trip followed various lessons and activities related to the responsibilities of owning and caring for a pet. The students enjoyed the opportunity to interact with the animals, ask questions, and tour the facility. Mrs. Cheryl Goughneour, BCIT teacher, welcomed Mr. Philip Little to Harrold Middle School. Mr. Little, a representative from the Department of Criminal Investigation in the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s Office, highlighted the importance of digital citizenship. Harrold and West Hempfield Middle Schools participated in the school-wide assemblies which included Internet predators, cyber bullying, and privacy, as well as the dangers of posting on social media. Harrold Students Come Together in the Fight Against Hunger Harrold Middle School's Student Council and their sponsors, Mrs. Jennifer Purkiss and Mrs. Katie Grasmuck, recently held their annual week-long food drive and collected over 3,500 of non-perishable items. It was definitely a school-wide effort with the students contributing food items, and the autistic support classroom collecting and packing them into boxes. The Westmoreland County Food Bank truck arrived at the end of the week and student council members lined up to fill the truck. Harrold Middle School is proud of another successful year in their fight against hunger. Kindness Shines Through at West Hempfield Middle School The Arts are Alive at Harrold Middle School West Hempfield Middle School teachers, Mrs. Dana DeMarco and Ms. Michele Bernard, oversee a group of sixth and seventh grade girls who implement activities to benefit both their community and school. Community events have included “Sock it to Drugs” where the girls developed posters asking students to bring in socks to donate to the Blackburn center. Over five hundred pairs of socks were collected to help women facing domestic violence. The girls were instrumental in coordinating the “Toys for Tots” drive for needy children in Westmoreland County. They also created valentines for the residents of Juniper Village in North Huntington, which certainly brightened the day for the senior citizens. The girls have also organized a clothes drive in the school for those in need. They spend time going through bags of donations, sorting, folding, and organizing them for distribution. West Hempfield Middle School is proud of the ongoing efforts of this group of students. The Fine Arts Department at Harrold celebrated National Youth Arts Month by hosting their annual Arts Alive celebration on Thursday, March 19, 2015. This team of hard-working seventh and eighth graders won the Architectural Design Challenge hosted by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation, held in February. Working under the supervision of their H.E.P. teacher, Mrs. Denise McGill, these students spent numerous hours during and after school for the past several months creating a scaled model of a building in a vacant lot in Lawrenceville. The students designed a building around their theme “Palate to Palette Around the World” while also including many of the historical architectural elements common to buildings in Lawrenceville. Sixth and seventh grade students at Harrold Middle School recently participated in “Read the Most from Coast to Coast Day.” Sponsored by Accelerated Reader (AR), students used class time for independent reading and library visits. As students finished a book, they were able to take an AR quiz. Thousands of schools across the country participated, and more than 4.1 million AR quizzes were taken that day! Middle School Spelling Bee Winners Seventh graders Katelyn Legg (Wendover Middle School) and Katelyn Johnson (Harrold Middle School) spelled their way to “champion” at the annual middle school spelling bees in February. Both girls will represent Hempfield Area School District at the Western PA Spelling Bee (the final local spelling bee) on Saturday, March 14, at Robert Morris University. The winner, sponsored by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, is eligible to compete at the Scripps National Spelling Bee held near Washington D.C. in May. Congratulations and best of luck to these two outstanding spelling bee contestants. Wendover Middle School Dodgeball for Charity Wendover recently held its annual “Dodgeball for Charity” event that features homerooms competing against each other for the coveted title of “Dodgeball for Charity Champions.” The event gives students the opportunity to enjoy some physical activity while raising money for local and national charities. Each student donated money in order to participate, and additional money was raised through a guest referee raffle. Wendover students raised over $2,000 during this year’s event. Over the years, “Dodgeball for Charity” has donated funds to the American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Ronald McDonald House, Mario Lemieux Foundation, CORE, Westmoreland Humane Society, and many more. This year the winning homerooms decided to donate the funds raised to MakeA-Wish Foundation and the Majesty Care Clinic. Kyle Critchfield, Abigail Lint, Danielle Delesandro & Zain Zahirare are “above the rim” with their fundraising efforts. Thanks to their combined efforts totaling over $1,230, West Hempfield Middle School raised $2,457 for Hoops for Heart which benefits the American Heart Association. 19 Hempfield Area School District Elementary School West Point Students Learn Pennsylvania Trivia West Hempfield Elementary Book Fair Fourth grade students from West Point Elementary studied hard and participated in a “Pennsylvania” trivia contest with questions about Pennsylvania geography, famous people, and places. There were seventy-six participants, and the students earning the prize of a delicious Hershey chocolate bar representing Pennsylvania chocolate were Cecilia Henderson, Madison LaRocque, Will Mueller, and Hunter Cernuska. Congratulations to all of the winners! A medieval theme was used for the book fair at West Hempfield Elementary. The teams competed in raising money for the “All for Books Program,” a program created by Scholastic where they donate a book for every dollar raised to another school in need. As a school, over $2,100 was collected to give to this worthy cause. The girl’s team raised the most money, and the prize was Mr. Dinkel wearing a dress in front of the whole school! In addition, the money raised at the book fair was enough to buy books for every classroom in the school. Thank you West Hempfield Elementary for the support you give the school and the community. Team mascots for the event were fourth grade teachers, Mr. Chris Dinkel for the boys and Mrs. Tracey Testa for the girls. Build on Your Lot or One of Ours A Salute to Veteran Patients Week The week of February 14 was not only a time to celebrate Valentine’s Day, but also a National Salute to Veteran Patients Week. It was a time to show our support for those who are still healing from the wounds, both visible and invisible, they suffered while serving our country. Through the collaborative efforts of Mrs. Angie Crescenzo, second grade teacher at Stanwood Elementary, and ATA Black Belt Academy, hundreds of cards, letters, poems, and stories created by Stanwood kindergarten through fifth grade students were collected and sent to the Veterans Hospital in Pittsburgh the week of Valentine’s Day. & e s 0 's e m ag 20 k H o P a c id m t Lo the om Custom Homes Fr Semi-finalists & winners pictured above. Stanwood Elementary was represented by six students including Mia Moore, Tim Martin, Brodey Cook, Ashley Keyser, Jesse Crosby and Parker O’Shell. An opening ceremony was held on March 1st to recognize all of the students’ creativity. First graders at Maxwell Elementary School didn’t let a two hour delay dampen their 100th day of school celebration on January 30, 2015. They started the day with a 100th day breakfast where each student counted 100 pieces of cereal that they enjoyed with milk and juice. The students made collages with 100 items and enjoyed stories, songs, and poems about the number 100. They did 100 exercises during the day and ended the celebration by making a trail mix of 100 pieces. Most importantly, there were more than 100 smiles throughout the day! Students Jump Rope for the American Heart Association Elementary students across the district recently participated in their annual “Jump Rope for Heart” event, raising an overwhelming amount of money for the American Heart Association. Mr. Nick Keefer, physical education teacher at Fort Allen and West Point, incorporated additional physical skills and balance activities for the students to run, jump, slide, kick and throw, along with the traditional jump rope activities. High school varsity athletes from the football, basketball, softball, and track and field teams worked with the students in stations throughout the day. Mr. Keefer explained, “This is an opportunity to raise pride in Hempfield and also give the younger students some positive role models to look up to.” Jump Rope for Heart, organized by the physical education teachers at each elementary school, is a means to raise money for the American Heart Association. To make it easier and fun for the students to raise money, there is an online tool that they can use to collect donations from friends and relatives. Technology teachers in grades three, four, and five helped students set up their own Jump Rope for Heart web page with a photo or video to email to their friends and family asking for their support. The ability to solicit donations online has increased the amount of donations significantly over the years. In Celebration of the 100th day of school, Mrs. Mia Trageser and Mrs. Gabrielle Roche are dressed up to look like they are 100 years old. Early in the meeting, citizens are recognized and welcome to voice any concerns or comments. e Board of Supervisors and municipal staff continue to work hard to make Hempfield Township a great place to live, work, shop, and raise a family. Over the last several years, the Supervisors have been asked to do more with less, which has been a common pattern in most Pennsylvania communities. In spite of this reality, the Township has seen some new individual housing lot development and construction of new commercial businesses. e Hempfield Lincoln Height portion of SR 30 was recently completed alleviating a traffic bottleneck and opening a path for new growth. is same area was provided with public sewage to eliminate many malfunctioning old septic systems which will improve the quality of life and property values. Hempfield Township Board of Supervisors Workshop Meetings Wednesdays at 7:00 pm April 22 May 20 June 17 July 22 August 19 e last two winter seasons have taken a tremendous toll on the maintenance of our over 300 miles of roadways. e employee overtime and extra salt needed to clear roads have taken the Township over budget because they have been above average winters. is weather has also been impactful on our pavement conditions, bridges, and storm water systems since they have experienced so many above average freeze and thaw cycles resulting in massive deteriorations to these structures. Rather than ask for more of your money, this Board has dealt with budgetary issues by focusing our attention on the core responsibilities of local government: infrastructure maintenance and support for our emergency services. is year we anticipate paving over ten miles of roadway and supplying our volunteer emergency responders with the equipment they need to protect this community. Note: Meeting Dates are Subject to Change Office Hours The hours of operation at the offices of the Hempfield Township Supervisors’, their staff, Code Enforcement and Parks & Recreation Departments are 7:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday Hempfield continues to be one of the few townships in Westmoreland County to operate a full time/year round recreation department. is department organizes trips for our seniors, provides activities for our school aged children, and offers a variety of classes for our pre-school aged children (including classes designed to prepare these children for school). e Township also employees a full time staff in the planning and code enforcement departments to help us manage our growth and keep our neighborhoods as quality places to live. Contact the Township Manager You may reach the Hempfield Township Manager, Andrew L. Walz by dialing (724) 834-7232, extension 141, or by e-mail at [email protected]. In years when winter seasons are average and revenues are up the Supervisors have had the luxury to support regional community programs such as community days and the library in Greensburg. When we are able to budget for over and above our core of government responsibilities these township sponsorships are provided with funds from the proverbial “icing on the cake”. ese are discretionary budget items we never want to reduce but sometimes must in order to provide for our core government functions within a balanced budget. ese are difficult decisions to make when adopting a budget that meets our fiscal obligations while living within our means without raising property taxes. e Board of Supervisors will continue to work hard to provide the highest level of services to a community that is by far a great place to live and raise a family. FREE Pre-K Counts Preschool This serves two (2) purposes: 1. If you stop on the painted line, the intersection does not get blocked for turning vehicles, especially trucks. 2. If you stop properly at the painted stop bar, there are traffic sensors in the roadway, which activate the signals in your lane. If you go past the bar, or are too far from reaching the bar, the red light traffic sensors are not activated and you will wait until other cars stack up behind you. Over 30 years since the first proclamation by President Ronald Reagan, the need for individuals and communities to renew their commitments to prevent child abuse to acknowledge the importance of families and communities working together persists. The staff of the Westmoreland County Children’s Bureau work to protect children from abuse and neglect, preserve families whenever possible and ensure that every child under our care and supervision has a safe, stable and permanent home in which to grow. During April and all year long, we remind everyone that YOU can make a difference in a child’s life. How YOU Can Help Prevent Child Abuse* 1. Report suspected child abuse and neglect to ChildLine at 1-800-932-0313 or to the Westmoreland County Children’s Bureau at (724) 830-3301. One phone call could save a child’s life. 2. Arrange for a speaker from the Westmoreland County Children’s Bureau to come and speak about child abuse and neglect at your school, workplace, church, club or group. The more that you know about child abuse the more that you can do to prevent it. 3. Call 211 to find out what resources are available in your community to help families, such as parenting support, counseling, drug and alcohol prevention or treatment programs, housing issues… 4. Educate yourself and others in your community to help prevent abuse from happening in the first place. 5. Get to know your neighbors and their children. If you know of a family that is under stress, offer to help. Sometimes just listening helps. 6. Volunteer your time with an agency that serves children and families. Some examples might be a parenting support program, an after school mentoring program or a homeless shelter. 7. Be a good example. Respect your family members. Don’t hit your kids; violence teaches violence. Say “I love you” more. Reward good behavior. 8. Become a foster parent. It’s not an easy job, but the rewards are great. 9. Reach out to neighbors and relatives with children. Offer to babysit, to give them a much-needed break. Learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of neglect and abuse such as: withdrawal from friends or usual activities; changes in behavior or changes in school performance; depression, anxiety or a sudden loss of self-confidence; an apparent lack of supervision; frequent absences from school or reluctance to ride the school bus; reluctance to leave school activities, as if he or she doesn’t want to go home; attempts at running away; rebellious or defiant behavior; and attempts at suicide (Mayo Clinic)** If you suspect that a child is a victim of abuse or neglect, we encourage you to report it. Reports may be made anonymously, but by giving your name you add credibility to the report. In Westmoreland County call 724-830-3301, during the hours of 8:30 A.M. – 6:00 P.M., Monday through Friday. During the hours the agency is closed, emergency referrals may be made to 911. You can also call the Childline hot line at 1-800-932-0313. *Revised from resources provided by Prevent Child Abuse Illinois and Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. **http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/child-abuse/basics/ symptoms/con-20033789 33 Volunteer Fire Departments Adamsburg Volunteer Fire Company The Grapeville Volunteer Fire Department is the oldest of the 12 Volunteer Fire Companies which provide Emergency Services in Hempfield Township.
