Hempfield Township has
established a fund with the
Community Foundation of Westmoreland County to support our
township parks. Your charitable donation will contribute to the
maintenance and expansion of Hempfield and Swede Hill Parks.
By donating now, your contribution will also help us expand the
programs offered to the children of Hempfield Township.
For your safety and enjoyment, please observe the following
park rules:
n DOGS must be kept on a leash and under owners control at all times.
n DOG owners are required to clean up and dispose of waste left
by dogs.
n PERMITS are required to rent pavilions.
n LITTER must be placed in designated receptacles.
n DRIVING vehicles on walking track and on fields and or
grass areas is prohibited.
n VEHICLES must park in designated parking lots.
n SPEED LIMIT throughout park is 5 mph.
n OVERNIGHT parking in the park is prohibited.
n ALCOHOL AND DRUGS are prohibited in the park.
n MOTORIZED VEHICLES (dirt bikes, quads, go-karts) are
prohibited in the park.
n FIREWORKS and open fires are prohibited.
n PLAY EQUIPMENT is designed for children ages 3 to 12.
Please use appropriate equipment for your age.
n CHILDREN are to be supervised by an adult at all times in
play areas.
n VANDALISM of any kind will not be tolerated. Offenses will be
prosecuted.
n PLAY at your own risk.

We invite you to visit one of Hempfield Township’s premier facilities featuring a 1/10th of a mile indoor
walking track, three multi-purpose athletic playing fields, concession stand, and lobby area.
n Membership Cards:
Anyone attending HTAC to use the walking track, open court,
participating in Adult Pick-up Sports, or Exercise Classes MUST
have a HTAC Membership Card to enter. Cards are available at
the complex during business hours and are free to residents or
a one-time $10.00 fee for non-residents.

Throughout the year, Hempfield Township Parks & Recreation seeks
individuals to fill part-time/seasonal positions.
Currently, we are accepting application for HTAC Facility Assistant.
The HTAC Facility Assistant works primarily nights and weekends
throughout November – April. The main responsibilities include
working the concession stand and running the clock/keeping score for
recreation basketball games. The hourly rate is $8.00 an hour.
Applications will be accepted anytime throughout the year, but the first
group will be hired in October. Deadline to register is October 9, 2015.

Withdrawal & Refund Policy:
If a program is canceled due to low enrollment, or for any other reason made by
the Parks & Recreation department, you will be contacted and issued a full
household credit or refund for the program. A participant wishing to withdraw
from a program that has not been canceled by the department must provide a
written request at least one week before the scheduled start of the program. If
granted, the participant may receive a 100 % credit to be used by any member
of the household for future use or request a refund check minus a $5.00
administrative fee per participant per program. Within the week prior to the
scheduled start of a program or after a programs starts, refunds/credits will not
be given except for verified medical/hardship cases and may be prorated. If a
participant misses a class or practice on their own, no refunds will be issued.
There is no refund for special events and trips. If there is a different refund
policy for a specific event or activity, it will be listed in the program description.

Music Makers
Music classes can increase your child’s vocabulary, develop math
and reasoning skills, and encourage creativity. During
Music Makers class, the children will copy rhythms,
follow tempos, and match pitches. We’ll play simple
instruments, learn songs, dance, sing, and even use
items we find around the house to make music.
Each class will center around a different theme.
Get ready to explore all types of music from

Cuddle and Bounce music class supports healthy brain activity as your

Halloween Fun

Getting Paid to Talk is a 2 ½ hour class designed as an upbeat and realistic
assessment of the voice over industry designed specifically for adults. A

theater background; or anyone who is interested in how voice-overs work
and how people get started.

Join our friends at Mutual Aid in our first of many sessions of the
Hempfield Community CPR & First Aid Certification courses. The
certification will be a classroom style, video-based, instructor-led course

Hempfield Indoor Soccer
The Hempfield Indoor Soccer League sponsored
by Hempfield Recreation Sports is open to any and

competitive atmosphere. The Indoor League will
use Futsal balls and will be played on an indoor
surface. Each team will play a 6 game schedule with
the top four teams making a single elimination
playoff. With all the players on the top two teams
receiving a Championship or Runner-up t-shirt. All games will be played

Message from Dr. Barbara J. Marin, Superintendent
Dear Parents and Community Members,
An active shooter simulation will occur during the week preceding the opening
of school on the high school campus. The entire K-12 professional and support
staff will participate in a drill that will involve the Pennsylvania State Police, neighboring municipal police departments, Westmoreland County and Hempfield
Township Emergency Management, volunteer fire departments, Excela Health,
and the local news media. This exercise will help staff to respond appropriately,
in the event that an actual emergency were to occur.
The summer months have flown by and the
2015-2016 school year will begin in just a few
weeks. This issue of Headlining Hempfield
contains information about many of the accomplishments that have occurred over the past
school year. We take great pride in the success
of our students, the dedication of our staff, and
the support of our parents and community. In this
issue, we are also sharing information about
some exciting projects that students and
teachers are looking forward to implementing when they return to school. Our
goal is to provide a quality education for all of our students within the context of
a safe and supportive environment that engages our students to flourish and
grow.
As you return to our campuses, you will notice a number of capital projects to
improve our buildings and grounds. Some of these projects include the paving,
sealing, and relining of the parking lots in all of our schools, and a roofing project
at Stanwood Elementary School. The gymnasium floors in all buildings have
been refinished. At the high school, a new sidewalk and steps have been installed beside the Spartan Field House for improved walking routes to and from
the stadium, parking lot, and field house. The varsity baseball infield, pitcher’s
mound, and batter’s box have been rebuilt to improve drainage and playing
conditions.
The one to one (1:1) Chromebook initiative at Hempfield Area High School will
help to transform our classrooms, thus enabling students to participate in a
learning environment that is conducive to creativity, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and exposure to a wide array of educational resources
during their time in school and well beyond the traditional school day. Teachers
attended summer workshops to prepare for this initiative. A Chromebook coach
will work with staff throughout the school year to help them implement
instructional strategies that will enable the students to use these devices as an
effective learning tool.

Measures to increase safety and security were executed during this spring and
summer. These improvements include high-resolution security cameras that
have been installed in all of our schools. All doors and windows in every school
have been numbered, making it easier to direct first responders to specific areas
of the building in the event of an emergency. All internal doors at the high school
have been equipped with devices that enable teachers to lock their classroom
doors from inside, without going out into the hall, in the event of a lockdown
situation.

Chromebook Initiative
With excitement and anticipation, the Hempfield Area School District is looking
forward to the launch of a one-to-one (1:1) Chromebook initiative for all ninth
through twelfth grade students beginning with the 2015 - 2016 school year. A
Chromebook is a laptop-like device that is built around the web experience and
also offers off-line capabilities for students. Every high school student will be
issued a device to use at home and in school.

To attain community and student input with the Chromebook
initiative, seventeen individuals, including parents and
students, attended focus group sessions with the school
administration in July. The purpose of these meetings was
to share considerations for implementation and to gather
feedback and suggestions to assure a successful implementation.
This initiative comes at a very exciting time for our school district
as we strive to provide a highly relevant and individualized learning
experience for all students. As you plan for the fall, please be on the

Health Curriculum Updates
for 2015-2016
During the 2013-2014 school year,
the World Language Committee
began the process of planning
curriculum revisions for the
2015-2016 school year. Members of this committee identified
strengths and weaknesses of
the existing curriculum, developed a road map for the future, and
began the process of exploring an
array of instructional strategies and
methodologies to assure that a highly rigorous World Language program
continues for all Hempfield students.
Teachers representing all
grade levels joined together
during the 2014-2015
school year for the purpose
of reviewing and revising
the health curriculum
for grades kindergarten
through twelve. This
committee analyzed the
current health curriculum and
state and national standards,
researched best practices, and made
recommendations in relation to health curriculum, instruction, and
assessment. Recommendations included the need for print and digital
teacher and student instructional materials that provide access to continuously updated and relevant content. This will be achieved in the elementary
level through the use of a periodical supporting instruction on topics that
address physical, mental, social, emotional health, and safety. Middle and
high school students will have access to current content through the use of
online resources that accompany textbooks and/or serve as supplemental
materials. Selected curriculum materials include The Great Body Shop
(www.greatbodyshop.com) for the elementary and middle school students
and Comprehensive Health (www.g-w.com/comprehensive-health-2015) for
the high school students. Anatomy and Physiology materials have also been
selected that align to college and university expectations. The written health
curriculum for each grade and/or course can be viewed from the Hempfield

In the 2014-2015 school year, committee members began the process of
selecting materials and analyzing curriculum for the purpose of identifying
changes that were critical in meeting the ever-changing learning needs of
all students. The “National World-Readiness Standards for Learning
Languages” provided the framework to identify benchmarks for what
students should know and be able to demonstrate from the time they begin
World Language until they graduate from high school.
In 2015 and beyond, students will be exposed to a curriculum founded upon
the newest research, effective instructional practices, and quality resources
with an increased emphasis on the integration, utilization, and access to
technology in the form of Chromebooks, e-texts, and numerous online
materials. The process of identifying relevant needs, selecting resources,
creating new curriculum maps, and infusing technology will ensure that all
Hempfield students continue to receive a highly engaging, rigorous, and
relevant World Language program well into the future.
Elementary Science Curriculum
During the 2014-2015 school year, several teachers in each elementary grade
level piloted science materials by both FOSS (Full Option Science System)
and STC (Science and Technology Concepts). The committee recommended
the continuation of an inquiry approach through the use of hands-on science
kits with some grade levels using the same kits from past years and/or the implementation of new kits for particular grade
levels. Consideration was given to
addressing the state and national
standards and the selection of
materials that support the integration
of STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Mathematics). An
area of focus for all science instruction
will be the expansion of student
writing or “notebooking” as a
means for students to document
thinking, predictions, and

Hempfield Area School District Department of Special Education Expands Programs
The Hempfield Area School District Department of Special Education, under the
direction of Jeffery Coover, Director of Special Education, is implementing some
exciting new changes within the school district for the 2015-2016 school year.
Two special education programs that were implemented within the past several
years will expand into the high school setting, providing students who have

The department has also expanded services for students who have emotional
support needs by developing a program at the high school. During the 20122013 school year, a program was initiated at Harrold Middle School in coordination with staff from AERI Behavioral Health Services. During the current school
year, the district will continue to provide services to emotional support students
at the high school. Students receiving these services will be assigned to a district
emotional support case manager and will have access to a certified behavior
therapist as well as a certified behavior consultant during their school day. This
expanded program is again a combined effort of Hempfield Area Special
Education Department and AERI Behavioral Health Services.
During the 2003-2004 school year, Hempfield Area opened its first districtoperated autistic support program at the former Bovard Elementary School. As
students matriculated through the elementary program and transitioned into
middle school, the program expanded and opened a class at Harrold Middle
School in 2007-2008. As the elementary program grew and expanded, the district added an additional elementary class in 2012-2013 and moved the elementary program to Fort Allen Elementary School. To complete the final stage in the

Scholarship Money
The annual Senior Awards Assembly was held in
May with presenters representing local community
organizations and colleges/universities attending to
present awards and scholarships to the class of
2015. The class of 2015 was awarded approximately
$4,060,870 in awards and scholarship money, the
highest dollar amount received by any class in the
history of Hempfield Area High School. Approximately 82% of the graduating class are attending a
four-year or two-year college or university, business,
trade or technical school; 3% enlisted in the military;
7% went straight into the workforce; and 8% were
undecided at the time of graduation. There were
470 graduates receiving their diploma on May 29,
2015, seventy-seven (77) with a GPA of 94.625% or
higher to claim the status of honor graduate.

BotsIQ 2015 Grand Champions
Congratulations to the BotsIQ team from Hempfield Area High School who won
top honors in the BotsIQ robotics competition at California University of Pennsylvania with their robot, “Nexus.” Fifteen-pound robots, designed and built by
the students, fought one-on-one against robots from fifty-seven schools across
Western Pennsylvania. This win allowed Hempfield Area to compete at the
national competition in Ohio where they placed fourth overall out of sixty-eight
high schools, technical schools, and universities. The team would like to thank
Composidie EDM Services, General Carbide, Kraisinger Family Dentistry, and
the PT Group, along with several smaller companies
and individuals who sponsored them, by providing ma- “Nexus”
terials, machining, and monetary donations to make
this project possible. Mr. Craig Siniawski is the
teacher advisor for the BotsIQ team. Core members
of the 2015 team were Eric Claney, JP Kraisinger,

High School Science Teacher Wins Awards
Hempfield 15601 Visits WTAE Studios
Mrs. Jennifer Bilott, Astronomy and Geology teacher at Hempfield Area High
School, was the recipient of two awards presented at the Pennsylvania Outdoor
Writers Conference at Seven Springs this past May. Mrs. Bilott won first place
for the Bass Pro Shop Pass it On Award for her article “Fun + Interesting =
Hooked for Life,” published in the magazine, Pennsylvania Angler and Boater.
She placed runner up in the Best Action Hunting, Trapping, or Fishing
Photograph for a picture published in the same magazine. Outdoor writers from
all over the state compete for several awards each year. The categories were
judged by the California Outdoor Writers Association.

The “Grapes of Math” at Harrold Middle School
West Hempfield Middle FCCLA Focus on
Community Service
Harrold Middle School seventh grade students in Ms. Becky Spurlock’s math
classes analyzed math-related children’s books through the integration of math
with language arts skills. They identified math vocabulary and central ideas
which were used to write a book report. Using the differentiated model, students
were able to choose an enrichment project to illustrate their findings. At the conclusion of the project, students and teachers participated in a “Gallery Walk” to
evaluate and reflect on student learning.
West Hempfield Middle School’s Family Career Community Leaders of
America (FCCLA) focused on community service outreach projects by
visiting the residents of Hempfield Manor in addition to participating in the
Focus on Children STAR Event. The STAR Event involves creating a lesson
plan for pre-school aged children that focuses on nutrition. They took a field
trip to West Hempfield Presbyterian Preschool and taught their lesson to the

New Greenhouse at Harrold Middle School
The Green Teens Club at Harrold Middle School has a new greenhouse.
Through sales at their student store, they were able to raise $3,000 to purchase
the 8’x12’ structure. The club, consisting of seventh and eighth graders, also
oversees a raised-bed vegetable garden which sits next to the greenhouse.

First Year Algebra Contest
The Mathematics Council of Western Pennsylvania annually hosts the
First Year Algebra Contest for the Westmoreland-Fayette Counties. The
contest is open to any student currently enrolled in a first year Algebra
class in middle or high school, and is coordinated by The Mathematics
Council of Western Pennsylvania. Angelina Kendi, Chris Venzin, and
Randy Nelson, students in Mrs. Andrea Hoak’s Algebra I class at Harrold
Middle School, finished in the top nine of all students competing in the
contest. Although they did not win, they all did a great job in the final round.

Two-time national book award finalist, Eliot Schrefer, visited students at
Wendover Middle School in May. Students prepared for the visit by reading and
discussing his writing in collaboration with their librarian, English, and reading
teachers. The focus novels were Endangered for eighth grade, Threatened for
seventh grade, and Spirit Animals: Rise and Fall for sixth grade. Student
members of the Westmoreland Interscholastic Reading Competition (WIRC)

Harrold Eighth Graders Enjoy Their Field Trip
Harrold Middle School eighth graders traveled to Laurel Caverns, Fort
Necessity, and Nemacolin Woodlands on May 22nd for their annual field trip.
Students took a one-hour guided tour and played mini golf at Laurel Caverns,
and had lunch and a tour of Fort Necessity. At Nemacolin, students
had access to a forty-foot high rope course and climbing wall, a
three thousand foot zip line, a paintball gallery, off-road rock
rides, mountain bikes, bowling alley, and arcade.
The trip was a great way to celebrate the end
of their middle school years.
Math Career Days at Harrold Middle School
Harrold Middle School held its fourth annual Math Career Days where parents
are invited into the school to speak to students about how they use math in their
daily job. A variety of careers were presented such as nurses, safety engineers,
accountants, pilots, a company controller and a physiologist. The two-day
experience was enjoyed by all sixth grade students.
Community Involvement To collaborate with the local public libraries, fifth grade library classes and
secondary reading competition teams read and discussed Chasing Lincoln's
Killer by James L. Swanson. Students and families were invited to attend a
lecture by Mr. Swanson held at Seton Hill University. The event was presented
by Westmoreland Federated Library System and SHARE Westmoreland.

Stanwood First Graders Find Exercising Fun
Fourth Grade Keyboarding Contest
Stanwood’s first grade teachers and staff recently teamed up with Innate Fitness
in Youngwood for a fun-filled family event for first graders and their families. The
trainers provided unique exercises and exciting games that made everyone
work up a sweat, all while they had smiles on their faces! Approximately one
hundred forty people participated, and many families left with prizes and an
overall wonderful experience.

In Memory of an Outstanding Teacher
Mrs. Mandy Giger, a beloved kindergarten teacher from West Hempfield
Elementary, passed away from cancer in May 2014. A very generous West
Hempfield family, the Wheatons, donated benches which have been placed in
two play areas of the school. A plaque in memory of Mrs. Giger has been placed
on each bench with the inscription, “Mrs. Giger, to the world you were a teacher,
but to us you were a Superhero!” The “buddy benches” are a place where
students can sit when they need a buddy.

Elementary HEP Explores the Science of Light
Champions of Art
In May 2015, Ms. Michelle Kozubal and Mrs. Gail Bupp’s fifth grade HEP
students from across the district visited the University of Pittsburgh at
Greensburg for a day of hands-on science. Drs. Todd and Katrina Brown,
Science Professors at Pitt Greensburg, organized the event and taught the
students about the science
of light through a day-long
workshop filled with STEM
based interactive learning.
The students embraced the
opportunity to don lab coats
and safety goggles in a
college laboratory setting,
and gained exposure to
higher level sciences.
West Point students participated
in the Westmoreland IU Champions of Art contest using the
theme, Under the Sea. Students
also had the opportunity to visit
the Latrobe Art Center to view
their art work on display, create
two pieces of art, listen to a story, participate in a scavenger hunt, and enjoy an
ice cream treat from the Dairy Queen. Receiving special recognition for their art
work were Deanna Berry, Paige Lewandowski, McKayla Mutnansky, Cameron
Toth, and Gabe Thompson. Other students who participated in the contest were
Aliyah Ricketts, Morgan Dalicandro, Nykole Butler, Sawyer Leuthold, Abby
Horton, Sage Detore, and Ben Hagins.
Maxwell Students are “Mad About Science”

West Point Elementary
Students at Maxwell LOVE science. The Pennsylvania Agriculture Lab visited
Maxwell and allowed students to participate in a variety of hands on experiments
to learn about pollination, classifications and functions of fungi, and the power
of a soybean (and they actually made lip balm to take home!).
Pennsylvania Representative Mike Reese visited West Point Elementary in
honor of National Law Month. Fourth and fifth grade students learned some
aspects of Representative Reese’s responsibilities,
which included how a bill becomes a law.
An after-school science program, “Mad Science,” gave the students an opportunity to become junior scientists as they donned goggles to change liquids to
solids and back again, in addition to measuring and recording their experiments.
One of their favorite activities was making their own slime! Both programs were
well received by students, teachers and parents.

where they created tri-fold story boards that
were labeled with Title, Author, Main Characters, Setting, Summary, Problem, Solution, and Author’s Purpose. The story
boards were set up around the gym for
everyone to walk around and read. This
project was something they could not do
when they entered first grade. It is amazing
what one year of great instruction and
student effort can achieve!

West Hempfield Elementary Title I Reading Department hosted an end-of-year
celebration for students and parents. All students who received Title I services
were invited to attend the performance of Peter Pan, presented by Stage Right.

underway. The 2015 team
was the first middle school
baseball team in the history
of the school district. The
team was comprised of fourteen eighth graders and four
seventh graders, under the
leadership of Head Coach

Coach Greg Meisner, Jr.,
and Volunteer Assistant
Coaches Shane Meisner
and Eric Davis. The team finished with a record of twelve
wins and only one loss.
Maddie Holmberg Honored
Madeline “Maddie” Holmberg of the
Hempfield Spartans Track & Field
Team was honored with two very
distinguished awards this past
school year. The Westmoreland
County Scholar-Athlete Excellence
Award, presented annually at the
Judge John J. Driscoll awards banquet in April, was awarded to
Maddie, the same award her dad,
Rob, received in 1989. A torn ACL
in her right knee kept her out of
action this past winter, but
amazingly, Maddie returned to the
track in late March and was sprinting
by the middle of April. Her
return to competition inspired her
teammates, coaches and training
staff as she came back to run in the
100-meter dash and 400-meter
relay, helping the Spartans to win

past spring. As impressive as her accomplishments are as an athlete,
“her character is twice that,” according to Athletic Director, Greg Meisner.
In addition to this award, Maddie also
received the CoGo’s Unsung Hero
Award recognizing local coaches
and student-athletes who have dedicated themselves to sports and academics. Donna Bernatowicz of

to Maddie in front of the Hempfield
Area Board of Directors at their
meeting in June. Maddie graduated
with the class of 2015 with a 98%
achievement in the classroom, and
will continue her college career at
Penn State University where she will
compete on their Track & Field team.

Attendance Matters at Hempfield Area
School District!
Nutrition, Inc. is the food service provider for Hempfield Area School District. Well
balanced, hot breakfasts and lunches are available daily to students at a minimal
price. Students may also purchase milk, juice, and snack items. Breakfast is
available to all students before the start of school; however, in the event of a twohour delay, breakfast is not served in the elementary buildings.
Attendance is to commitment as academics are to scholarship. Unfortunately, when
students are absent or chronically tardy, achievement levels suffer. Statistics show
that just being there definitely matters!
Attendance Reminders:
• Students need to be in their homeroom by:

• An excuse must be submitted within three (3) days of student’s return
to school
• HASD excuse forms can be found on www.hasdpa.net or at your
school’s office
• If a student is absent, he/she cannot participate in afterschool activities on
the day of the absence
• Failure to submit an excuse will be classified as an unlawful/unexcused
absence
• A physician’s excuse must be submitted for any absences that are five (5)
or more consecutive school days
• When a student accumulates ten non-medically excused absences, ten
non-medically excused tardies, or displays a pattern of weekly absences,
he/she will be required to submit a written medical excuse from a physician
for all subsequent absences or tardies.
Federal regulations allow one meal per student per day for both breakfast and lunch.
Extra meal items can be purchased at ala carte prices. State and Federal regulations prohibit exchanging food or taking uneaten food from the lunchroom. Menus
can be found on the bulletin board in each classroom and by clicking the Menus
icon located at the top right corner of the district website www.hasdpa.net. They
are also sent home monthly with each elementary student.

1. Cash (put in an envelope with the student’s name noted)
2. Check (checks can be written for payment to Hempfield Area School District
Food Service (HASDFS). Please include the student’s name on the

The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act is designed to improve student achievement
by increasing federal involvement in public education at both the state and local
level. Parents have a right to know the professional qualifications of their child’s
teacher(s). This is to inform you of your right to ask for the following information
about each of your child’s classroom teachers:
• Whether the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has licensed or qualified the

Message From The Board Of Supervisors
If front line firefighting isn’t for you, the Township also supports the Hempfield
Emergency Management Association (HEMA). is group, stemming from
many different professional back grounds, develops plans for a wide variety of
emergency situations. Should an emergency arise they would be activated to put
that plan into place and support their neighbors through the tragedy. Like with
our volunteer fire departments, the township is dedicated to providing the HEMA
staff with quality training and support.
e Board of Supervisors is dedicated to supporting these essential volunteer services. Each of these organizations require a wide array of skill-sets and interests,
from answering fire calls to fundraising and accounting. However, our community
will be at risk if residents do not take an active role in volunteering.
If either of these opportunities peeks your interest, please contact Bruce
Beitel, Assistant Township Manager/Public Safety Director, to learn how you can
get involved in helping to protect and serve Hempfield Township.

Our routine is about to change and volunteers are needed.
Summer 2015 will soon be a memory, the kids will soon be back to school and
the autumn leaves will be arriving with their brilliant colors. e annual fall events
are also around the corner, Community Days at Hempfield Park will be held September 12-13 and the Spartan Homecoming Parade can be seen October 2nd
along SR136. We can always count on a change of seasons but the Townships
ability to count on community volunteers to serve essential roles is also changing.
Community Volunteers are one asset category that isn’t incorporated into the annual budget. Hempfield Township has historically been a community with an
abundance of volunteers; whether it be as recreation a league coach, Community
Day volunteer or with other area organizations. In order for our Township to
continue with success, volunteers will need to remain an important part of our
foundation.
One of the most fulfilling volunteer opportunities offered in Hempfield, is with
our emergency services. e volunteer fire fighters and members of our emergency
management staff have played an important role in the preservation of our Township neighborhoods. However, too few of our young residents are volunteering
to serve in one of our twelve volunteer fire departments. is puts a strain on
our dwindling pool of veteran fire fighters to do more, and often times, with less.
e Township is dedicated to supporting our departments with equipment and
training, but the thing we need most are people willing to serve.

Traffic Reminder – Red Lights
The Department of Public Works reminds the
traveling public of the following:
If you are not aware, every red light intersection
has a painted stop bar line on the ground, and
usually a sign that states “Stop Here on Red”,
with an arrow pointing toward the ground.
This serves two (2) purposes:
1.If you stop on the painted line, the
intersection does not get blocked
for turning vehicles, especially trucks.
2.If you stop properly at the painted stop bar,
there are traffic sensors in the roadway,
which activate the signals in your lane. If you go
past the bar, or are too far from reaching the bar,
the red light traffic sensors are not activated and you
will wait until other cars stack up behind you.
Most complaints the Township receives regarding
red lights not working properly are caused by the
above issues.

All outdoor burning or fires in areas of RESIDENTIAL dwellings
shall be:
n Limited to twigs and yard waste during the hours of 8 a.m. to
2 p.m. on SATURDAYS.
n Controlled in a safe manner and has an ATTENDED WATER
SUPPLY OR EQUAL AT ALL TIMES.
n Occurring at least 50 feet from any structure and 30 feet
from any property line.
n GARBAGE, NEWSPAPERS or PAPER PRODUCTS,
RUBBER, TIRES, PAINT, ANIMAL WASTE, PLASTICS,
DIAPERS, TOXIC MATERIALS, or any other SOLID
WASTE is PROHIBITED from being burned
AT ANY TIME.
n Outdoor fireplaces, grills, fire pits, and stone
rings used exclusively for recreational
purposes and/or for food preparation
are exempt from these regulations
provided the activity is conducted
not closer than 15 feet to any
property line.
n LEAVES are PROHIBITED from being
burned AT ANY TIME. Check the fall leaf collection dates below.
n Burning of any type is prohibited on any paved portion of a street,
alley, or public grounds.
Fines: 1st Offense: Warning issued; Fire to be extinguished;
2nd Offense: Prosecution; Up to $1,000 fine

Public Works’ crews working on roads.
Please pay attention to warning signs along the
roads, flaggers, and please slow down.
The Public Works Department will be doing numerous
jobs such as: paving, patching, tar and chipping, catch
basin repairs, storm water pipe replacements,
sign repairs, berming, shoulder mowing, sign repairs
and numerous other jobs.

As you already know, state law mandated in Act 32 that one earned
income tax collector per county shall be established. Westmoreland
County’s earned income tax collector is Berkheimer Tax Administrator.
There are several important points to note:
• This is for earned income tax only
• Keystone Collections will continue to be the collector for
Business Privilege, Per Capita, and Local Services Taxes (LST)
• Jim Regola will continue to collect property taxes
You should have already received information from Berkheimer Tax
Administrator. Their website is www.hab-inc.com.

Although you may be a Hempfield Township resident, you may reside
on a roadway maintained by the state or Westmoreland County.
Therefore, Hempfield Township does not have any authority on these
roads.
Should you have concerns regarding state roads, you may also wish to
contact your state senators or representatives. The Westmoreland County
Commissioners may also be contacted for concerns on county roads.

Audiobooks For Free At The Library
The Greensburg-Hempfield Area Library is pleased to make available
eBooks and downloadable audiobooks to the residents of Hempfield
Township. This service is being provided by the Library and a
consortium of public libraries in Westmoreland County. All residents of
Hempfield Township are eligible for a free library card and this card is
honored at all 20 plus public libraries in our County.
Our Library is providing eBooks and downloadable audiobooks for
free to its cardholders in good standing. Hempfield patrons can
download these materials from a link at the website of the
Greensburg-Hempfield Area Library at www.ghal.org.
EBooks and audiobooks can be downloaded to numerous devices
including a PC, a Mac, an iPAD, a Nook, a Kindle and other
devices. For some devices, users will need to install free

The Adamsburg Volunteer Fire Department wants junk cars! If you are
interested in getting rid of “good” junk cars, consider donating them and
receive a tax deduction. These cars are utilized for Rescue classes to
train volunteer firefighters in rescue techniques and practices.

Special Needs Population Registry:
The Grapeville Volunteer Fire Department is the oldest of the
12 Volunteer Fire Companies which provide Emergency Services in
Hempfield Township. We operate the following Vehicles: 1992 Rescue
Pumper, 1995 Heavy Pumper, 2005 Compressed Air Foam Pumper.
• 2018 will be Grapeville VFC’s 100 year Anniversary Celebration;
Information will be forth coming in 2017 for Parade, Games,
Activities, Entertainment and Fun Times.
• Accepting Applications for Membership: Active Sr. & Jr. Firefighters.
