I’ve been a part of this association for many years attending the meetings, participating in committees, as a board member, and as an officer, but it is amazing to me the perspective you receive when you are actually the president of the association for one year. To have that mantle of responsibility placed upon your shoulders and work alongside the other officers, board of directors and committee chairs as well as David Rogers and his staff is quite remarkable. The way you think about your peers changes, you see things differently and more profoundly than ever before. Florida has the best state association in the southeast and I’m glad that my perspective and loyalty has deepened and expanded even more this past year. Thank you to everyone who made this past year memorable for me. I know you will be in good hands with Jeffrey Williams, Todd Lawrence, Greg Blazina and Craig Fisher as your new executive officers. The committee meetings and general membership meetings were heavily attended and extremely informative. We had the pleasure of hearing from Alison Abbott, Communications & Marketing Director, World LP Gas Association; Tucker Perkins, Chief Business Development Officer, PERC; and Jeff Petrash, General Counsel, NPGA. One of the many highlights of this year’s convention was the ratio of dealers verses suppliers as there were 60 attendees representing dealer companies and 51 attendees representing supplier companies; also in attendance was Tony Autorino a retired industry pioneer who received the prestigious Hall of Flame Award. Tony has worked in the propane industry for 64 years and still provides consulting services to companies in Florida, Central America and Caribbean Islands. Other representatives from the Bureau of LP Gas Inspection and the Florida Department of Agriculture’s marketing division were also present. A new award was created by the FYG officers and presented by Mat Jones, previous president of the Florida Young Gassers (FYG), to Michael Mooney, outside sales manager with Leran Gas Products, who received the first Florida Young Gassers Achievement Award. The money raised from the reserve raffle was $5,125 with $2,100 paid to the winners and the rest split between the Propane PAC and the FPGA Scholarship Fund. Winners of the Reverse Raffle were Dan Giampetroni, Kevin Bahr, Mat Jones and James Barber. The Suppliers won the Dealers vs Suppliers Volleyball Tournament for the second year in a row. Tucker Perkins, Chief Business Development Officer, PERC; Alison Abbott, Communications & Marketing Director, World LP Gas Association; and Jeff Petrash, General Counsel, NPGA. Executive Vice President David Rogers presents Tony Autorino and his wife Delores Autorino the Hall of Flame Award. FPERC News Member News FPGA Scholarship Fund Receives Large Donation Propane has a New Look T he marketplace for propane has changed. New technology has made propane an appealing alternative to gasoline and diesel in applications beyond home heating and cooking. U.S. production of propane has also skyrocketed, making the fuel truly American-made. And, more residential customers are making an effort to use energy that’s good for the planet — and our country. With those factors in mind, over a year’s worth of research went into uncovering the ideal positioning for propane. The result is a new brand identity for the fuel, anchored by the tagline PROPANE Clean American Energy™. Put the new look of propane to work for your business. Get started by visiting propanecouncil.org/ propane-brand to learn more about the brand project and how to adopt the new brand into your business. T he FPGA’s scholarship fund has awarded 83 students with $1,000 scholarships with the exception of one student receiving $2,000 due to hardship and circumstances. We know we make a difference in the lives of our industry’s children and their educational pursuits and are fulfilling Mack Hacker’s vision when he created the fund in 1999. We have many fundraisers each year to keep this fund viable along with personal donations from members, their companies or other local associations and all are appreciated. This year we want to recognize Jim Hamilton, AmeriGas vice president of southern operations, who made a personal donation of $2,000 at our annual convention. Thank you Jim for your generosity and support! September/October 2014 Propane Magazine 17 18 Propane Magazine September/October 2014 FYG News MESSAGE FROM NEW FYG PRESIDENT I Joanna Sams Anderson FYG President am honored to be serving as the new President of the Florida Young Gassers. I come from a family of Young Gassers as both my grandfather, Bobby Sams, and my father, Randy Sams, were also involved and I am proud to follow in their footsteps. The Young Gassers had a great time at the annual convention this July in Palm Coast. The first Young Gassers recognition award was given to Michael Mooney with Leran Gas Products. We also had a great turn out and a lot of excitement for the corn hole tournament. Stuart Arnold and Tom Hayes, with Amerigas, were this year’s Corn Hole winners. We will be hosting another corn hole tournament at the fall board meeting. So make sure you sign up for this event when you make your plans to attend. We were reminded with the theme of this convention, “Propane- the Next Generation,” how important it is to be an active member of the Florida Young Gassers. We are always welcoming new members, so if you are not currently involved we would love to have you join us. The propane industry has a great history and a promising future and I am so glad to be a part of both. L to R: Stuart Arnold and Tom Hayes. September/October 2014 Propane Magazine 19 NPGA News Propane Supply and Security Act of 2014 Introduced; Bi-Partisan Action Benefits Propane Customers O n July 31, 2014, a bi-partisan group of senators made up of, Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), and Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH), introduced the “Propane Supply and Security Act of 2014”. This comprehensive legislation will benefit propane customers directly, increase market transparency, and improve the propane delivery infrastructure. The bill contains language that would clarify Congressional intent of the Propane Education and Research Act that currently restricts customer outreach activities by the Propane Education & Research Council. “This provision is critical because it allows the industry to use its own resources to talk directly to our customers. When we have harsh winters or unexpected supply challenges, being able to communicate with our customers in a quick and efficient way can mean the difference between a crunch and a crisis,” said David Lugar, Chairman of the Board of Directors at the National Propane Gas Association. For consumers, the bill makes it easier to know what the market price of propane is in neighboring areas by ex- 27th World LP Gas Forum in Miami Florida Members Receive 30% Discount on Registration 27th WORLD LP GAS FORUM & 29th AIGLP CONGRESS CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION October 28-30, 2014 Intercontinental Hotel Miami www.wlpgas2014.com Join the Twitter Community #lpgmiami2014 Alison Abbott, Communications & Marketing Director, World LP Gas Association attended FPGA’s annual convention last month and shared information regarding the 27th World LP Gas Forum that is October 28-30, 2014 at the Intercontinental Hotel in Miami and she offered Florida members a 30% discount on registration if you wish to attend. To register please review the link below to view which registration(s) you are interested in and provide Kim Barber, Communications Director with the FPGA, your information by September 12th; she will collect this information and turn in one list of Florida participants to the World LP Gas Association (send information to Kim Barber via [email protected]). This meeting will not be this close to Florida members in proximity as it travels around the world so seize this opportunity now. 20 Propane Magazine September/October 2014 panding the pricing data from States that participate in the State Heating Oil and Propane Program (SHOPP) of the Energy Information Administration (EIA). Armed with this information, customers can make more informed purchasing decisions. Last winter, propane prices increased dramatically at a time when the storage levels at major market hubs in Conway, KS, and elsewhere, were unknown. The proposed legislation would eliminate that kind of market uncertainty by mandating weekly inventory data reported at the State level and at the collective storage facilities at market hubs. The Propane Supply and Security Act of 2014 increases the authority given to Cabinet Secretaries to ease regulatory burdens during fuel emergencies. If a sudden price spike or supply shortage occurs, the Secretary of Energy will lead emergency response efforts to ensure expedited distribution of propane through measures such as: exemptions from hours-of-service restrictions, prioritizing propane shipments by rail and in pipelines, and other actions deemed necessary. “The National Propane Gas Association applauds this bi-partisan group of senators for their leadership in preventing another propane supply and distribution crisis. The provisions contained in this bill benefit consumers and improve market transparency. NPGA is looking forward to working with other stakeholders as the bill advances through the legislative process,” said Rick Roldan, President and CEO of the National Propane Gas Association. CASE STUDY: Propane Saves Money, Maintenance for Florida Dairy Complications with diesel engines led Shenandoah Dairy in Live Oak, Fla., to switch to propane-powered irrigation engines, according to a case study available on the Propane MaRC. In addition to lower initial cost for the propane-powered Ford 6.8-liter engine, farmer Ted Henderson reports fuel cost savings of $10 an hour, and he estimates $10,000 in annual savings compared with EPA tier three-compliant diesel engines. Use the case study to show your prospects the benefits of switching to propane. It’s available as a free download, or for purchase in packs of 25. Cheaper and simpler oil changes. Emissions reduced by millions of pounds. That’s the message of a new case study analyzing Student Transportation Inc.’s 435 school buses operating with propane autogas during a one-year period. These buses service Nebraska’s Millard and Omaha public school districts. They also support Omaha’s “Green Schools Initiative,” which encourages environmental responsibility, consumption reduction and green living. “Propane autogas buses offer a healthier choice for passengers and make sense for the environment,” said Patrick How to Cut Lawns, Costs and Emissions with Propane For many landscape professionals, it’s an endless summer as crews are working 24/7 to maintain properties. But it’s also the season to remind them about how to grow their profit margin by switching from gasoline- or dieselpowered models to propane, including 17 different brands of propane-powered mowers. Check out the MTST training module to show landscape contractors the money savings (about 30 percent) and green benefits (up to 50 percent less greenhouse gas emissions) of mowing with propane. MTST Training Module: http://propanecouncil.org/ mtst/go_green/ Vaughan, Student Transportation’s chief operating officer. “Omaha’s use of these buses supports their commitment to a clean city.” The buses travel between 100 to 150 miles per day for a fleet average of about 50,000 miles each school day. STI estimates that 4.2 million fewer pounds of carbon dioxide have been released into the atmosphere with these buses over the past year. On average, propane autogas costs about 50 percent less per gallon than diesel and reduces routine maintenance expenses. With 96 percent of its school buses running on propane autogas, Omaha is projected to become the first school system in the nation with a 100-percent propane autogas bus fleet. “We are seeing a national trend of school districts seeking alternative fuels, and will continue to stand behind this propane autogas product,” said Vaughan. “The switch to propane autogas is a win-win for the school districts, the parents, the communities and STI. Everyone can appreciate the environmental benefits and the cost savings.” Currently, more than 10 percent of Student Transportation’s existing 12,000-vehicle national fleet operates on propane autogas, with plans for more. The Blue Bird Propane Vision and Micro Bird buses are equipped with ROUSH CleanTech’s propane autogas fuel systems. In 2013, propane-powered buses accounted for about 12 percent of all school buses sold in the United States. A growing choice of vehicles on the market and the introduction of alternativefuel incentives and tax breaks in several states are combining to speed along propane school bus sales in several new markets. Find out why Omaha (Neb.) Public Schools is pleased with its 435 propane school buses, visit Propane.com to learn about and promote tax incentives in your area.
