Pope Francis Laudato Si’ Faith and Mission Marie Louise Hartzer Last Wednesday in our College Assembly, we remembered and celebrated the life of Marie Louise Hartzer, born 27 August in 1837. Having been a wife, mother and widowed far too young, Marie Louise knew the struggles of life. Throughout these difficult times, she never lost her faith and trust in God. Together we prayed: Loving God, today we gather in your presence to remember this valiant and special woman. May the life of Marie Louise Hartzer continue to be an inspiration to us. We make our prayer in Jesus’ name, Amen. NAPLAN test results provide OLSH teachers and parents with information on how each individual student is performing in the areas of literacy and numeracy. The data from NAPLAN test results enables us to measure our students’ achievements against national minimum standards and student performance across all Australian states and territories. At OLSH these results are used in conjunction with other pieces of data to support improvements in learning and teaching. The following diagram displays the minimum standards and common scales for NAPLAN results across all year levels. For further details on interpreting your daughter’s NAPLAN results please refer to the information sheet which accompanied the results. Please do not hesitate to contact the College for further support. The following video (1:45mins) presentation also provides further information about understanding the NAPLAN scale: http://www.nap.edu.au/results-and-reports/how-to-interpret/naplan-understanding-scale Ms Lynn Egan Assistant Principal Learning and Teaching Please note change to dismissal times Monday 29 August School dismissed at 2.25pm Wednesday 31 August School dismissed at 3.15pm OLSH Newsletter Page | 4 Student Wellbeing News Pacific Paradise OLSH girls will be joining together on the Feast of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart to support both Kiribati and Papua New Guinea. Mr Ramon Saheed Director of Education and Information Services Science Breakfast with Dr Misty Jenkins On the morning of August 17, six Year 11 students, Divya Patel, Maria Farag, Katelyn Fitchett, Doris Tran, Amanda Jambu and Jacquelyn Cox attended the annual Science Breakfast for the Alliance of Girls’ School Australasia of which OLSH is a member. In this annual event students join with women who represent many different branches of Science to discuss the impact, study pathways, and career opportunities that exist across the scientific arena and become part of a developing network of women in Science. This year the guest speaker was Dr Misty Jenkins, NHMRC Fellow and Laboratory Head at the Walter Eliza Hall Institute for Medical Research. Misty has been a Fellow of the University of Cambridge, the 2012 National Association of Research Fellow Investigator of the Year, awarded the L’Oreal for Women in Science Fellowship in 2013, and was also awarded the Tall Poppy of the Year award for Science (Victoria) in 2015. Misty was passionate about her life’s work as a scientist which was greatly inspirational to the girls at the breakfast. Students at OLSH could see a future working within the dynamic world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics in their futures. After all, OLSH girls can do anything. Ms Dianne Byers Head of Science OLSH Newsletter Page | 7 College News School Tours at OLSH College We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day on 16 August when many families joined us for a presentation from the Principal and a school tour. Guests were greeted at the front gates by our enthusiastic Student Ambassadors. The formalities began with the College Captain Rebecca Nielsen welcoming guests with the other student leaders Charlotte Deam, Faye Valladares and Georgie Sturt. A prayer was offered by senior student Piwainashe Kahonde and a Welcome to Country was said by Maya Blackman. The Principal, Ms Anne O’Loughlin warmly welcomed visiting families to the OLSH community. She spoke about the fact that, as a smaller school, we were able to know and love our students from the time they start until long after they graduate, when they become part of the Alumnae. Ms O’Loughlin explained the fact that the College was an independent Catholic college governed by the Daughters of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. She also described the unique Issoudun program at Year 9 and referred to the excellent academic results consistently achieved by students at the College, especially at VCE level. Ms O’Loughlin went on to share news of the new building program at the Ella Bourke and Piper Zielinski College and she also advised families about the scholarship opportunities at OLSH College for (Student Ambassadors) 2017 and 2018. Families then took a tour of the College and judging by the many positive comments they were very impressed with our wonderful Student Ambassadors. There was an opportunity for the visitors to meet the Leadership Team over a cup of tea and to have their questions answered. Thanks go to all the staff and students who helped to make it such a successful morning. We are now all looking forward to Open Morning from 9.15am on Thursday 2 September when we will be able to showcase the College, the many innovative learning programs on offer and the wide array of cocurricular choices available to OLSH students. Excited chatter and laughter emanating from St Martin’s Youth Theatre. The big day had arrived and the OLSH Theatresports team was ready for anything! Impro Melbourne’s Theatresports™ Challenge, held on Sunday 14 August, was a celebration of the diverse imagination of youth. Theatresports™, a popular improvisation show created by Keith Johnstone, has been performed in Australia for over 30 years and has helped to foster the talent of Lano and Woodley, Julia Zemiro, Andrew Denton and more. Theatresports™ fosters the ideals of making your partner look good, creative thinking and playfulness as well as building confidence and theatre skills. The day started with a fun workshop that released energy and creativity in a variety of games. This was followed by preparation for the show. After a lunch break the show began with a lively audience in attendance. Teams of students took to the stage and played a variety of Theatresports™ games – one, two and three minute challenges. The OLSH team entered into the spirit of the day and performed in fine style. It was a really great day! Congratulations to Year 8 students - Grace Bowles, Laura Campbell, Leah Gannan, Grace Jemetta and Olivia Jonasz who received a Certificate of Awesomeness at the end of the day. Mrs Michelle Fenton Head of Department Co-curricular Activities Eisteddfod By The Bay The Eisteddfod by the Bay competition was held on the weekend of Friday 19 August.
