The Vienna High School Class
of 2014 is preparing to leave the nest.
VHS will be holding graduation on
Friday, May 23 at 7 p.m.
The class of 2014 is compiled of
71 graduating seniors. Lucas Wright
and Ashton Loyd have earned the
honor of being the Valedictorian
and Salutatorian, respectively.
The top seven student have
earned Four Year Honors. These
students are Shane Cowsert, Kathryn
Jones, Avery Kerley, Ashton Loyd,
Nicholas Myers, Cassidy Stout, and
Lucas Wright. They are pictured on
Page 2.
The students have voted on
their class flower, motto, colors, and
song. The class flower is the tiger
lily, and the motto is a quote from
The Perks of Being a Wallflower by
Stephen Chbosky: “We are who we
are for a lot of reasons. Maybe we’ll
never know most of them. But even
if we don’t have the power to choose
where we came from, we can still
choose where to go from here.”
The class colors are blue and
silver and the class song is “Best
Day of My Life” by the American
Authors. Mr. Joshua Stafford has
been selected by the class to be the
guest speaker at graduation.
Five VHS students will also
graduate with their Associates
Degrees from Shawnee Community
College during graduation on
Friday night. They are Lucas
Wright, Ashton Loyd, Trenton
Lowery, Assiah Mercer, and Alyssa
Ferguson.
“It definitely wasn’t easy, but to
see four years of hard work pay off,
it has no doubt been worth all of the
stresses,” said Lucas when asked
about the honor of being named the
Valedictorian.

honored at the graduation ceremony on May 23, 2014.
“A little party never killed nobody”

On Saturday, April 26, VHS
students once again suited up for
the highly anticipated 2014 Prom.
This year’s theme was “The
Great Gatsby.” The decorations
and many of the dresses and suits
were inspired by the F. Scott
Fitzgerald novel, by the same
name, set in the 1920’s. Luckily,
Prom only mirrored the parties
depicted in the book, not the rest
of the plot.
Shawnee Community College
hosted Vienna’s Promenade in its
education center. All friends and
families were invited to attend
promenade and take pictures
of the students and their dates.
Promenade began at 6 p.m.,
preceding Prom, which began at
7 p.m.
Prom was held in SCC’s
main entrance atrium. Tables
surrounded the dance floor and
were decorated with “The Great
Gatsby” quotes and 1920’s
masks.
Before the night was over,
the Prom King and Queen were
announced. Mr. Riepe was given
the honor of crowning King
Christian Dahncke and Queen
Maranda Chance. When asked
about the experience, Christian
said, “I really wasn’t expecting it,
but this was a crazy way to end
my senior year. I love my class
and it’s sad that the year is almost
over. Thank you everybody who
voted for me.”
The last song of Prom ended
at 10:30 p.m. After the atrium
was adequately cleaned up, many
Prom attendants and their dates
loaded themselves onto buses
and headed to the official AfterProm.
After-Prom was held at
Blodgett’s Paintball Planet near
Sikeston, Missouri. Students
were allowed to participate in
numerous activities like paintball,
laser tag, and visiting around a
bonfire.
McKenzie Mattox, a senior
who went to After-Prom, said,
“Everybody seemed to have a
good time, I definitely did. We

were all still wide awake and
ready for some laser tag! It was
a great way to end a great night.
I just wish we weren’t graduating
so soon!”

Four-Year honor students recieve recognition

students

the Class of 2014 will be
recognized as four-year
honor students. They have
received the honor by having
at least a 4.5 grade point
average for every semester
of their high school careers.
The seniors will receive a
special honors stole to wear
for their accomplishments
during their graduation.

‘ We R e m e m b e r ’ C o n c e r t

On July 12, Matt’s Hats
will host their 3rd annual
‘We Remember’ concert
event in support of cancer
patients and their families.
The event will include
several performances from
local bands in addition to
up and coming bands such
as 7eventh Time Down,
Everfound, and Vienna’s
very own Brian Jones’
band: From Ashes.
The
memorable
event will be hosted at
Vienna High School in the
gymnasium. The doors
open at 5:00 P.M.
Tickets start at $5.
These can be purchased on
Matt’s Hats website or from
Matt himself.
The money from the
concert will be donated
to Washington University
School of Medicine in
St. Louis, Missouri for
pediatric cancer research.
Matt’s
Hats
will
also be selling corporate
sponsorships. If you are
interested in becoming an
official sponsor of Matt’s
Hats the opportunity will be
available at this event.
In addition, there will
be guest speakers including
cancer patients and their
families.

What are you looking
forward

most
about
the
concert?
I’m excited to see all of the
community support and to see
other people believing in what
I believe in.
Why did you start the
annual concerts?
It originated in honor of
Cristina Botello. The concert
is a great way to spread
awareness and the cause of
Matt’s Hats.
How are you publicizing the
event?
We are using flyers (like the
one at right), newspapers,
and social media to spread
the word.
Where do you hope to see
Matt’s Hats in 20 years?
I would like to see Matt’s Hats
ranked among the top ranked
corporations like Livestrong
and The American Cancer
Society.

VHS takes first in Business Skills competition

Vienna High School recently
participated
in
Shawnee
Community College’s Business
Skills competition on Thursday,
March 27. Any student who takes
a business class was eligible to
attend. Vienna students competed
against students from Massac
County,
Goreville,
Century,
Cairo, and Egyptian High School.
Students competed in competitions
that tested their business skills.
Vienna was looking to make
a repeat of last year’s appearance
at the competition, because last
year was the first time Vienna won
the overall competition. Vienna
succeeded in their goal as they
not only won the competition
by winning more than any other
school, but Vienna’s very own
Lucas Wright received the award
for Outstanding Business Student
of the year!
Business Skills teacher Mrs.
Clayton was very pleased by the
performance of the students at the
competition. She stated, “I was
so happy for the students to win
the overall competition. These
students worked hard to excel, and
their hard work paid off.”
Mrs. Clayton was also very
pleased that Lucas won the Most
Outstanding Business student of
the year. She said, “Lucas was a
very deserving recipient for the
Outstanding Business Student of
the Year Award. He has worked
as an Editor of the Talon for the
past two years; his involvement
in Eagle Outlook has also given
Lucas a great range of knowledge
and experience. I was so happy
he was recognized at Shawnee’s
Business Skills competition for his
accomplishments.”
Lucas has received a college
of media scholarship from the
University of Illinois and plans
to become a sports broadcaster at
ESPN.
With Vienna winning the
overall competition two years in
a row, the future is looking bright
for VHS as they plan on keeping
their winning streak alive for many
years to come.
Senior Noah Bain also attended
the Business skills competition.
This was his third time going to
the competition and has won two
trophies over the three years. Noah
said, “I will definitely miss business
skills, it was a great way to learn a
little bit about the business world.”
The business skills competition
allows many studens to test
what they know in business and
plan to continue winning many
competitions to come.

First Annual special needs prom held at VHS

On Saturday, March 29, VHS
held the first ever prom for students
in the life skills classroom.
The theme for this prom was
“It’s Our Time Now,” and the
colors were orange, blue and white.
Teacher
Mrs.
Michelle
Hunsaker said, “A student’s
mother approached me with the
idea of having something special
for our kids, such as a prom. She
had come up with the idea from a
documentary program. We went
from there with a small planning
committee, and getting a few small
donations from the community. I
was very honored to be a part of this
prom. It also means so much to see
the community getting involved.”
The students voted on the
theme and music for their prom.
They also picked various songs for
their own playlists.
Teacher’s aid, Mrs. Rosa Sparks
stated, “I think this was a wonderful
experience for our class. Fancy
dresses, suits, up-dos, manicures,
food, and lots of dancing made for
a great night.”
Prom was held from 5 p.m. until
8 p.m. Dinner was from 5-6 p.m.,
and dancing was from 6-8 p.m.
During dinner, each student
received an award based on class
voting.
Freshman
Maleia
Lanier,
stated, “Prom was so exciting! I felt
really pretty. It was such a great
experience!”
Subway in Vienna and Dominos
Pizza in Metropolis both donated
dinner for the students.
Teacher’s Aid Mrs. Krista
Huckleberry said, “We started
discussing, planning, and preparing
last summer. I was so excited to
be a part of giving our class an
opportunity to feel like prince
charming or a princess for an
evening.”
Many members of the
community were more than willing
to offer their time and effort to this
very special event.
Freshman Jessica Treat said,
“My dad was my date to prom. I
had alot of fun dancing with him.”
Students got their hair, makeup,
and nails done free of cost to them.
Teacher’s aid, Mrs. Karla
Hunter stated, “How exciting it
was to be a part of the first prom
for our kids. The atmosphere was
as if it was Christmas again. Since
they were the ones who planned
the evening, it really brought out
the personality of each student.”
A photographer was provided
and students got free flowers, and
even their own prom t-shrit.
Junior Kaydee Parini stated,
“Prom was so much fun! I loved
listening to the music that the class
picked out.”
Senior Jessica Buchan was very
involved with not only the special
needs class all year, but she also
helped them make decorations for
prom. They were all very excited to
see that she attended prom.

VHS students travel to Barkeley Regional Airport

On April 2, Mr. Pulliam’s
students took a field trip to
Midwest Aviation in Paducah,
KY.
Midwest Aviation is a
stopping place for planes to go
for needs such as gas or an oil
change.
It was founded in 1985 and
began to expand in the early
1990’s.
Some things that are great
about flying with Midwest
Aviation is they save time
because the lines to get on
the planes and baggage lines
are a lot shorter than bigger
airports.
Midwest Aviation is also
cheaper to fly out of than the
big commercial airlines, since
Midwest Aviation flies small
planes and jets.
The students got a tour of
Midwest Aviation and they
also got to get into some of the
air planes, such as an air force
plane pictured.
Students
were
also
instructed on basic flying
training.
Senior Heather Court said,
“I enjoyed seeing parts of the
plane and I also got to see how
the planes were put together.
We also got to see a crashed
plane, which was pretty cool,
and we got to go inside of a
plane.”
Mr. Pulliam said, “Mr.
Steve Colson did a great job at
giving us a tour of the Midwest
Aviation facility. The tour was
beneficial and opened the eyes
of our students to new career
paths that the students may
have never heard of.”

The 2014 season for the Lady
Eagles finally kicked off on March
19 after a rocky start due to weather
conditions.
Pope County traveled to Vienna
for the first game, which ended in
the first loss of Vienna’s season.
On March 21 and 22, the Lady
Eagles played in the Marshall
County Slugfest. During the
tournament, Vienna took on
Ballard County, Murray, St. Mary,
and Marshall County.
The Lady Eagles picked up
their first regular season win on
March 24 when they faced Cobden
at home. Katie White’s home run
and Maranda Chance’s grand slam
helped seal the win.
Vienna picked up two more
wins on March 26 and March 27
against Crab Orchard and Egyptian.
On April 1, the Lady Eagles
traveled to Massac to face the
Patriots with Alexa Harper on the
mound. The game ended in a loss
for Vienna. (continued on page 6)

Eagles baseball swings for the fences

VHS Baseball got a late start
with their season with the weather
not being a friend. The Eagles were
not able to be on the field until 3
days before their first game.
The Eagles worked through the
weather and jumped to a 3-0 record
to start off the season.
The Eagles first opponent was
the Pope County Pirates. Wasting
no time at all, the Eagles jumped
on top and never looked back. A
solid pitching performance by
seniors Christian Dahncke and
Blake Crain, backed up with strong
bats gave the Eagles an easy win.
The next game was the Crab
Orchard Trojans. The Eagles got a
slow start with the bats but ended
up knocking in runs. The Eagles
had a strong pitching performance
by Senior Dylan Graves, only
allowing one run.
Making the long travel to
Egyptian and a slight rain did not
bother the Eagles at all. They
jumped on top with eight runs
in the first inning. Junior Austin
Krelo picked up his first win of the
season with a 18-2 victory.
Herrin Tigers made their way
to Vienna on March 31 to match
up against the Eagles. The Eagles
were tested facing the best pitching
they had seen so far this year
combined with some pretty good
sticks as well.
The Eagles stayed with the
Tigers throughout the course of the
game, but fell in the last inning to
pick up their first loss of the season
10-5.
Senior Christian Dahncke and
Blake Crain both threw well, but it
was not enough against the Tigers.
They were backed with two homeruns by Senior Dylan Graves to
drive in four of their five runs, but
it still was not enough.
Vienna made their way to
Massac to match up with the
Patriots. This would be their
hardest game yet.
Vienna started off strong,
driving in one run in the first, but
Massac answered right back with
a run in the second. The score
was held to 1-1 all the way until
the bottom of the sixth, when the
Patriots strung together a few hits
and put the Patriots on top 5-1. The
Eagles could not answer back in
the seventh and fell to Massac 5-1
for their second loss of the season.
With rain in the forecast the
Rivals tournament was forced to be
moved from Vienna to Goreville.
Although the Eagles had a
decent start, they did not have a
good day at Goreville, falling to
both Shawnee and Cobden in the
final innings of both games. This
knocked their record to 3-3.
With two more losses, the
Eagles made their way to Zeigler.
The Eagles started out the game
strong by putting the first runs on
the board. But the Eagles could
not add up anymore runs, falling to
Z-R. With the Eagles on a four game
losing streak, they made their way
to Anna. The Eagles came out to
play right from the start. Senior
Christian Dahncke was on the
mound for the Eagles and pitched
an amazing game. They went on
to defeat Anna-Joneboro 3-2. This
is the first time that they have beat
A-J in 12 years.

VHS track team ends season in a sprint for first
May 2014

Vienna High School’s Mr.
Drew Lawrence is the new coach
for the track team. So far this year,
Vienna has had four track meets.
Senior
Trenton
Lowery
dominated all competition by
coming in first in the 110 and 300
meter race. He came in second for
the triple jump event in his first
track meet.
Track Captain Trenton Lowery
has participated in track all four
years in high school. Trenton
competes in the triple jump, 110
meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles,
and the 4 by 400 meter relay.
Trenton said he will miss track
once he graduates from VHS. He
commented, “The thing I will miss
most about track is looking behind
me and seeing my competition left
in the dust. I am just an animal out
there and it is just not fair for the
other schools out there.”
Senior and track captain
Desiree Walter is also having a
good year. Desiree has also been
on the track team for all four years
of her high school career as well.
Desiree competes in the 100
meter, 200 meter, 400 meter, and 4
by 4 relay. She commented, “What I
love and will miss most about track
is winning. I won everything.”
Desiree has run track since she
attended Vienna Grade School. She

is a prime competitor for the Vienna
Eagles.
Mr. Lawrence has made a few
changes into the track program this
year. He has made his runners work
hard and better through practice.
Mr. Lawrence also has his runners
doing P90X as well as intense
running exercises.
Mr. Lawrence said, “The seniors
have been amazing. I’m sad I only
get to coach one year with these
seniors. I encourage more students
to join and watch us in action at our
track meets.”
The next four weeks there will
be two track meets a week. Team
captains Trenton and Desiree are
unstoppable and will be missed
very much, along with the rest of
the seniors Danny Chapman and
Shane Cowsert. This group of
track stars have had an outstanding
season and have made Vienna
proud.
Mr. Lawrence hopes to place
high in the track State finals coming
up very soon.
on April 16 against the Carrier
Mills Wildcats. The Lady Eagles
made some great defensive plays,
keeping the Wildcats scoreless.
On April 17, Vienna traveled to
Chester to play the Yellow Jackets.
The Lady Eagles started off strong,
scoring in the first inning. Though
they got off to a good start, the
game ended in a loss for Vienna.
During the same week, Vienna
picked up two wins. On Wednesday,
the Lady Eagles beat the Cobden
Appleknockers for the second time
of the season. On Thursday, Vienna
traveled to Elverado-Elkville to
take on the Lady Falcons. After 7
innings, the score was 11-2 with
Vienna claiming the win. This
was the first conference win of the
season for Vienna.
Vienna’s next game was at Pope
County against the Lady Pirates.
The Lady Eagles started off strong,
ending the first inning with a score
of 9-0. After 5 innings, the game
ended with a victory for the Eagles
and a score of 25-3.
On May 1, Vienna traveled to
Goreville to face off with the Lady
Blackcats. The Lady Eagles kept
the Blackcats from scoring in the
first inning with a nice play made

St. Mary’s Private Catholic
school traveled to Vienna on April
22. St. Mary’s jumped out on top
and stayed on top throughout most
of the game. In the final innings
the Eagles Managed to rally in a
few run. It was still not enough
though with the Eagles falling to
St. Mary’s.
Facing a full week of games the
Eagles fell two more times, once to
Fairfield and another to Cobden.
With a long losing streak
going on, the Eagles made their
way to Elkville. With a strong
performance at the plate getting 18
hits. The Eagles went on to win
13-7 to break the Eagles’ losing
streak.
After defeating the Pirates
earlier in the season, the Eagles
traveled to Pope County for their
second game.
After jumping out to an early
lead the eagles never looked back
and went on to defeat the Pirates
14-0 with a strong combined
pitching performance by Junior
Austin Krelo and Senior Blake
Crain.
March 1, the Eagles had a hard
fought battle with Arch Rivals the
Goreville Blackcats. Another win
would keep their winning streak
alive.
Senior Christian Dahncke
delivered a strong pitching
performance through six innings
only allowing 5 runs. Dahncke ran
out of steam and they had to bring in
relief pitcher Jarrod Wiggs. Wiggs
had trouble finding the strike zone
and Dylan Graves came in to finish
the game winning 8-7.
The Eagles are on a winning
streak and are looking good going
into the play-offs.

The Lady Eagles were expected
to play five games during the break,
but ended up only playing two.
They traveled to Zeigler-Royalton
on April 10. After a tough battle,
the Lady Eagles came up short,
losing 1-2.
Against Anna-Jonesboro the
Lady Eagles really rattled the bats
and brought the score to 8-3. In the
bottom of the 7th, a 3-run home run
by A-J altered the score, but Vienna
held on for the 8-7 win.

Chester was played on April 17
with the dreaded travel an hour and
a half away.
The long bus ride affected
the Eagles for the majority of the
game. Chester stayed on top of
the Eagles 9-4 until the top of the
seventh. Then the Eagles jumped

When one door closes, another door opens: FFA Banquet 2014
After months of rigorous
planning, the Vienna FFA held
their annual FFA Alumni Banquet
on Friday, March 28 in the Vienna
High School commons, resulting in
the biggest turn out ever.
The retiring chapter officers
installed the newly elected officers
into their stations. Then, the annual
auction took place, and the retiring
officers were thanked for their year
of service with plaques from FFA
Advisor Mr. Jason West.
Opening ceremonies started the
night, conducted by the 2013-2014
Officer Team. This was followed
by a warm welcome by Mr. Josh
Stafford, Next, the invocation was
said by Mr. Austin Tuey, and a
wonderful meal followed.
After the meal, Chapter Reporter
McKenzie Mattox presented the
slideshow of pictures from events
and contests and other highlights of
the year.
Sentinel Parker Agin then
presented the Greenhand Degrees,
the first degree that members can
earn in FFA.
Mr. West then named Freshman
Max Allbritten and Courtney Boren
the Star Greenhands for their avid
participation throughout the school
year.

were presented, 2013-2014 Chapter

Capitol Building March 6 to show
their appreciation to the legislators
of Illinois.

Browning traveled to Springfield,
Illinois to attend the event. There,
they had the opportunity to thank
the legislators for all that they
do for the State of Illinois and
meet with the District 118 State
Representative Brandon Phelps.
The students also had the
special honor to walk out
onto the floor of the House of
Representatives, learn the history
of the room, and get a picture taken
standing where the Speaker of the
House would be standing just an
hour after the fact, thanks to the
generous invitation from Cook
County Representative Martwick.
Members from all over the
State gathered in front of the
Capitol Building for a picture with
the State FFA Officers and the
2014 Illinois County Fair Queen,
Summer Robins, before finding
their respective legislators.
FFA members delivered gift
baskets filled with items ranging
from popcorn to coffee mugs and
pamphlets, as well as a pecan tree,
to legislators within the Capitol
and the surrounding buildings to
thank them for the work that they
do in the State of Illinois.

April 15 for the annual Invitational
Livestock and Dairy Judging.

FFA members judging, Vienna’s
Varsity dairy judging team placed
first overall.
John Waters was the highest
scoring member of Vienna’s team,
placing third with a score of 96
out of 100, and Colten Schultz
and Aaron Taylor tied for seventh
individually.

Juniors
Austin
Tuey and Jerret Blackman, and
Freshman Max Allbritten, did
their best and placed third overall
out of 51 teams.

The Annual Murray State
University FFA Field Day was
held on April 16, offering a wide
variety of events for members to
compete in. Vienna participated
in livestock, dairy, dark fried
tobacco, horse judging, and bull
riding and roping.
Sophomore Tucker Francis
took second in bull riding,
following in the footsteps of
Sophomore Dylan Wisocki, who
placed first in the event last year.
The livestock judging team
placed eighth out of 41 competing
teams from Illinois, Kentucky,
Tennessee, and Indiana.
Dairy judging was another
success, with the varsity team
taking fifth out of 32 teams, but
also took another milestone along
the way by being the first team
from Illinois to place in the dairy
Reporter McKenzie Mattox then
presented the Chapter Degrees, the
highest degree that an FFA chapter
can bestow upon a member.
Mr. West presented the Star
Chapter Farmer to the most active
sophomore member, Parker Agin.
Mr. West then presented the
Outstanding Members Award. This
year there were two Outstanding
Junior Members: Austin Tuey and
Rachael Ren.
Though it was a hard decision,
Mr. West decided to award
Outstanding Senior Member to two
senior members: Colten Schultz and
McKenzie Mattox.
The Alumni Auction was the
next item on the list, which was a
huge hit with the community. The
big ticket item this year was a quilt
made by Norma Stamp out of FFA
shirts of members throughout the
years with the FFA motto sewn onto
the opposite side.

Beta Club welcomes new members

On Saturday, March 29, the
annual Beta Club Induction took
place in the new gym.
There were 21 freshmen
officially inducted into Vienna High
School Beta Club that night. Group
talent and skit were performed for
club members’ family and friends,
as well.
Beta Club Induction is a
ceremony where new members are
officially inducted into VHS Beta
Club. It’s a yearly function that
formally welcomes new members
to the club in front of friends and
family.

Globetrotters visit four countries
By Markayla Johnson
A 5 AM wake up call on the
3rd of April was the beginning of
a long European journey for four
VHS students and one teacher. Mr.
Giffin, Alyssa Ferguson, Haley
Edwards, Markayla Johnson, and
Shawna Oliver all traveled to Italy,
France, Monaco, and Spain over
the 2014 Spring Break through EF
Tours.
The tour started with a day trip
to Milan, Italy. Next, the group
traveled to Cinque Terre, Italy for
two days.
After Italy, the group stopped
in Monaco for a few hours on the
way to France. Monaco included
seeing the Royal Palace and the
Basilica of Saint Nicholas, where
the Princess Grace Kelly is buried.
After arriving in France in the late
afternoon, the group took a tour of
Fragonard Perfumery in Grasse,
France before entering in Nice in
the evening.
The travellers started out their
morning in Nice at the Florian
chocolate factory. From there,
the group enjoyed free time in
downtown Nice. On Mondays in
Nice, a large flea market occupies
the main street downtown with
local vendors. Many treasures
and bargains were found, and a
newfound interest in bartering was
found by a few students. After free
time, the group traveled to a small
medieval hilltop town, Saint Paul
de Vence. The day excursion was
full of gorgeous French scenery,
along with the local art village
shops.
The next morning, the travelers
set out early for a long six hour
drive to Barcelona, Spain.
Once in Barcelona, they had
a panoramic view tour from their
charter bus. Also, they were able to
go to internationally renowned art
park, Guell, by the famous Spanish
artist, Antoni Gaudi. After the
tour, many hours for free time were
given for shopping in the infamous

Another highlight of the trip
was being able to go into the basilica
of La Sagrada Familia. Once in the
basilica, the students were able to
go in the top of a bell tower. The
bell tower on the basilica is the
largest tower in Barcelona!
On the last night in Barcelona,
the tour ended with a traditional
Spanish flamenco dance. followed
by dinner in a local Barcelona
restaurant. The next stop in the
morning was the airport, and then
back to Vienna, 30 hours later.
Another Globetrotters trip has
come and gone, but the sights that
were seen and experiences had will
continue to live on.

Wests AG Class comes to the aid of Johnson County

The Johnson County operating
center recently had trouble when
water leaked into their Mobile
Command center. When they
discovered
there
misfortune
they asked Mr. West’s Intro to
Agricultural Mechanics class to
repair the Mobile center.
Throughout the school year,
Mr. West has taught his students to
work on small engines, including
lawn mowers, four wheelers, and
weed eaters. Mr. West had not let
his class work on something as big
as the command center yet, but he
felt as if his class was ready to take
on the challenge.
The class was asked to rip up
the flooring that been ruined by the
water and replace it.
Sophomore Nathaniel Ross
worked on the project. He said, “It
was a lot of fun working on this
project and I cannot wait to start
another one again soon.” He also
said he likes knowing he helped
Johnson County with something
that he learned in his class
The class began working on
the command center in April, after
a heavy rain went through southern
Illinois. The command center is
expected to take the rest of the
school year to finish.

One kind hearted VHS student reaches out to life skills class

Senior Jessica Buchan has been
working in the Life Skills classroom
since the beginning of the year.
Jess teaches are techniques to the
students, and helps them create a
variety of art projects.
At the beginning of the school
year, Jessica would go to the Life
Skills classroom once a week to
work on art projects, but since
now it’s getting closer to the end of
the school year ,Jess has been going
to help in the Life Skills classroom
any chance she gets throughout the
week.
Jess
also
helped
with
decorations for the first special
needs prom. Jess stated, “I enjoy
going into the Life Skills class
because I know, no matter what
mood I’m in, they always cheer me
up. Their high spirits are contagious
and I always look forward to being
around them.”

The Stones take Intramural championship title
By Taylour Daubert
Bump, set, spike! The
teams were put to the test with
the arrival of the Intramural
Volleyball tournament.
Leading off the tournament
were victories for the Kitty
Killers, One Hit Wonders,
Hashtags, and Praetorian in the
single elimination round. This
advanced them to Round Two,
and one step closer to victory.
With more games to come,
Round Two of the tournament
started off with one of the biggest
upsetting and newsworthy
games of the tournament.
The underdog story of the
year took place on the court
with a victory for the 9th
seeded team, the Kitty Killers,
against the number one seed
Katastrophe.
The teams played hard and
were a definite crowd pleaser,
as the Kitty Killers advanced to
the Semi-Final round.
Battling head to head,
Praetorian and Bazinga laid
it out on the court. However,
Praetorian took home the
victory against the 3rd seed and
highly anticipated team.
Also advancing to the
Semi-Finals were the One Hit
Wonders and The Stones.
The Kitty Killers had
guaranteed their spot at the
championship with a win over
the One Hit Wonders.
The
team
battled
it
out against the Stones for
the
Intramural
Volleyball
Championship
title.
With
the best two out of three, the
Stones came out on top as the
new Intramural Volleyball
champions.
With tradition to uphold,
the newfound winners saddled
up to face off against the VHS
teachers. The rivals played the
best two out of three.
With two close games, the
teachers showed what they were
made of and maintain their title
of Kings of the Court.

Senior achieves her dream of college sports

VHS Senior Maranda Chance
recently made her dream of playing
college sports a reality. On April
21, she signed with Southeastern
Illinois College for softball and
basketball.
Maranda has always dreamed
of playing college sports. She has
played basketball and softball for
12 years.
Although she loves both sports,
Maranda has a strong preference
for basketball. “I feel more
involved in basketball. There is
always something to do and I never
get bored,” said Maranda.
A very memorable moment
for Maranda was when she
received Most Valuable Player her
sophomore year.
Maranda’s position in basketball
is point guard. In softball, she has
played many different positions.
Her starting position this year is
short-stop.
Mr. Palmer has coached
Maranda in softball during all four
years of high school. “I am very
proud of Maranda for her hard
work. Getting to coach her over
the past four years has been great,”
said Mr. Palmer.
In addition to her sports,
Maranda will be attending classes
at SIC to get her general studies
done. She wants to go into the
nursing program, but is unsure
about her future career plans.
Hard work has paid off for
Maranda and she is very excited
to start this new chapter in her life.
She will be living on campus with
a few of her basketball teammates.
“Everyone has been very
friendly and I am excited to get to
know the other girls better,” said
Maranda.

On Wednesday, March 12, a
group of 38 students took a field
trip to Cape Girardeau, Missouri
for a Spanish concert.
The Ojalá Tour stopped in
Missouri to put on a few concerts.
This tour is specifically performed
for Spanish-taking students and
Spanish teachers.
The singer,
Ennio Emmanuel, grew up in
Puerto Rico. He now tours with the
Justo Lamas group for educational
purposes, and also shares his story
to encourage students to chase after
their goals.
VHS’s
Spanish
students
learned many of the songs before
they went to the concert. It was
helpful to the students to not only
memorize some of the lyrics, but
also to understand the meanings as
well.
Ennio’s set list included many
traditional and well known Spanish
songs. He changed the music to a
more modern sound, but the lyrics
and culture stayed the same.
After Ennio finished a few
songs, he took a short break to
tell the crowd about his story. He
was raised by a good family, but
he rebelled strongly as a teenager.
Ennio explained that he started
doing drugs and drinking, and it
spiraled out of control. It took a
fatal incident to change his ways.
He uses his life story to inspire
people. After Ennio’s rough life as
a teen, he took control of his life
and began to have positive ideals.
He decided to chase his dream of
becoming a singer, throwing away
his past of alcohol and drug abuse.
Ennio is a very successful
song writer in both the English
and Spanish languages, but he still
chooses to do educational tours.
Not only did the students learn

Mrs. Palmer competes in River to River run

April 12 was a huge day for
VHS teacher, Mrs. Palmer. She
took part in running the River to
River relay race.
The River to River run
consists of several teams of
eight runners that all compete
to complete an 80 mile course.
Each runner is responsible for
running three sections that range
in length from 2.5 to 4 miles.
Mrs. Palmer completed the
relay with her close relatives.

Everett.’

Former VHS graduate opens cupcake store

A recent Vienna High School
graduate and former Talon writer
has opened her own cupcake
business called “Cupcakes by
Katelyn.” The owner’s name is
Katelyn Bailey.
Katelyn is 18 years old and
has become very successful. In
her new cupcake bakery which is
right between The Dollar Store
and Family Dollar. Everyone in
Johnson County is excited to have
a bakery.
Katelyn is a Johnson County
native and everyone loves her
sweet creations. Katelyn makes
everything from cupcakes to
cinnamon rolls to cookie cakes as
well.
Katelyn has a wide variety of
cupcake flavors such as strawberry,
chocolate, butterscotch, cookies
and creme, and vanilla.
Katelyn has invented a new
cupcake for spring time, which is
vanilla with green frosting with a
peeps baby chick on it. She also
has made a new chocolate attack
cupcake that has chocolate icing,
chocolate chips, and chocolate
Herseys kisses on them. She
also makes cookie cakes and
regular cakes for birthdays or any
celebration that you may have.
I had the opportunity to talk
with Katelyn about her plans for
the future. She said, “I’m really
excited that I decided to open
up my new business. I hope to
be able to expand soon and offer
sandwiches on homemade bread.”
