It is something that they will talk about for the rest of their lives.” After the game, the Eagles came together for team pictures. Deep Thoughts By Daniel Kerley “For quite some time, I have always been wondering where the school elevator is located. I have finally, after 4 years, been able to deduce that the elevator is only accessible to the teachers and faculty. I still, however, don’t know why Mr. Hill won’t give me a refund on those tickets I bought freshman year.” “Have you ever been standing in line in the cafeteria and thought how awesome it would be if for one day they served lunch at the end of the line? Well you shouldn’t think that because it diverts your attention from the people who are cutting in front of you.” Jonas Corell Cochran Born: March 30, 2009 8lbs. 2 oz. 19 1/2 in. Page 7 The Talon May 2009 Seniors adventure to St. Louis Cardinal’s game By Kassidy Shoemaker It was a beautiful day, Thursday, April 23, for the class of 2009 to go to a St. Louis Cardinal game, during the PSAE and ACT test taking days. It was sunny and very warm. “I had so much fun at the game! It gave me a chance to hang out with all of my friends outside of school and see an exciting game!” Shianna Little explained right after the awesome experience. The Cardinals played the New York Mets and the Cardinals totally dominated. The score was a phenomenal 12 - 8 to take the Cardinal’s to the top. Albert Pujols with two home runs and Rick Ankiel with one home run helped lead the Cardinals to a sweet victory. “It was definitely an amazing experience Seniors have a great day watching the Cardinals play the Mets. ( from left to right) Allison Bean, Makenzie Kirby, Nicole Martinez, and Reagan Summers. Ross Hill enjoys watching the baseball game with his senior softball players. VHS Talon sponsor gets caught eating out of trash can By Cassie Martin Desperate. That’s what Mrs. Clayton was when she went to work one day and realized she didn’t know where she was getting her food. Most people would think of the vending machine, maybe driving to the store, or possibly asking her fellow staff members to loan her some money, but this extraordinary Mrs. Clayton decides to search the trash can for food because Josh Stafford would not go out to lunch with her. to get to see the Cardinals beat the Mets right before we graduate. It’s a once in a lifetime experience,” commented Ashley Childress about her trip to St. Louis. “The seniors deserve to have some fun for working so hard these past four years” principal, Mr. Harner, said about the Seniors’ last year at Vienna High School coming to an end soon. teacher comes up with a better idea, the trash can! I can kind of see her point, I mean it IS free. All of the teacher drama started when Mrs. Clayton wanted to go out to lunch with Mr. Josh Stafford. Josh rejected her and Mrs. Clayton, who was left hungry and alone, decided that her only other option is to go to the dreaded school cafeteria. The “school cafeteria” is a very scary and dark place for most teachers to attend. They are surrounded by many students when their lunch break is the only time they have to escape! Mrs. Clayton walks slowly to the lunch line and she then finds that it is too little too late. All of the food was gone! Worried and confused, Mrs. Clayton turns her head and that’s when all her stress and anxiety vanishes. There it was, with its light blue shade and the thin black plastic liner... the trash can. Two Talon staff members watch in disgust as their sponsor devours her lunch from the trash can. VHS holds Olympiad for grade schools By Sara Jennings The Jonas Brothers have entered the building! Squealing and laughter filled the halls of VHS as high school students impersonating the famous band of brothers entered the grade school Olympiad. Each year VHS hosts the Olympiad for the younger students who attend Buncombe, Vienna, New Simpson Hill, and Cypress grade schools. The Olympiad is designed for 5th-8th graders and allows them to participate in little activities. The activities are based on what they have learned, or by using some of their skills they have aquired during school. One of the games they played was where they had to guess how many skittles were in a jar. Also they built a straw man, a bridge and a catapulted an egg that could be protected with only gum and bread. They also had some students from VHS dress up as certain characters for the contestants to guess. The students who helped were Bobby Hoffman, Austin Adams, Patrick Daum, Daniel Kerley, Dashia Marr, Jacob Lane, Drew Walsh, Sean Fitzgerald, Laeytn Field, Kelin Field, Hannah Little, Cory Belsher, Caroline Bremer, and Jason Sullivan. The VHS students were judged by looking like the characters and their willingness to perform. All the VHS volunteers had to read a paragraph about the person they were representing. The Olympiad was made up by Mrs. Sarah Holhubner, a VHS math teacher. She made up all the games and activites. She also hand picked the VHS performers. Page 8 The Talon May 2009 VHS hosts Red Cross blood drive By Deanna Morris Friday, April 3rd, Vienna High school hosted the annual blood drive. PSAE field trips take place with VHS stud e n t s By Kirsten Trambley While the Vienna High School junior class members were taking their Prairie State Achievement Exams (also known as PSAE’s) on April 22 and 23, all other students in grades nine, ten, and twelve had to leave the school as to let the juniors test in peace and quiet. On Wednesday, April 22, the freshmen took the EXPLORE test in the school’s Commons Area. On Thursday, the uttermost underclassmen spent a day at Shawnee Community College testing and seeing a show in the Educational Center. The sophomores traveled to Shawnee Community College on Wednesday to take the ASSET test, the exam that permits or holds a student back from being admitted into college level classes while still in high school, which can include the dual-credit classes offered at VHS. Thursday the sophomores stayed at Vienna High School to take the PLAN test, a Pre-ACT test that will help them be able to set their future goals. After that, they went to the Cache River Wetlands Center. There they were split into three groups; two of which went to clean up trails along the river, and one which planted trees, laid mulch, and picked up litter at the Wetlands Center to prepare for an event to take place later that week at the location. On Wednesday, the seniors jobshadowed community members in action at work. Senior Desiree Hill said, “It was a great experience to work under my mom when we job shadowed on Wednesday, April 23. She is a really inspiring person, and I love her work attitude.” Desiree went on to say that “I was not looking forward to it, but it was awesome to see her at work!” On Thursday, the senior class took a trip to St. Louis to see the Cardinals professional baseball team in action. Fortunately for most of the fans, the Cardinals won. Loura Wiggs, a moderate Cardinals fan, enjoyed the game because “(Albert) Pujols, first baseman for the Cards, hit three home runs. Sophomores Sarah Cain and Maggie Cox pick up limbs along the Cache River near the Wetlands Center. After that, the New York Mets, the opposing team, got scared and walked Pujols the next time that he was up to bat!” Although the juniors might not have had the most fun testing, the other classes definitely enjoyed their time while taking a short break from Vienna High School! Chelsie Racey starts cleaning the large pile of limbs blocking the path at the Cache River before anyone else attempts. Aaron McDonald is pulling a pile of fallen trees out of the way on the path at the trail near the Cache River. John Alford: I’ll always remember digging through the cafeteria’s garbage looking for Chasity’s necklace. Paige Alford: My favorite memory was when Mr. Giffin was in the teacher lip sync and was acting like Justin Timberlake. Amy Alsip: My trip to London and Paris this year with the VHS Globetrotter holds many fun and exciting memories. Also, participating in the school play “Guys and Dolls” was a lot of fun and a good bonding experience with friends. Ashton Barger: My favorite memory would be the Nursing and Anatomy trip to the Cadaver Lab. Allsion Bean: My sophomore year during boys’ basketball. Especially the sectional games at McLeansboro. Shanelle Beasley: The time I was in Cara’s homecoming skit and had to be a flower child that did an interpretive dance. It was embarrassing then, but now it just makes me laugh! Benny Bessette: When Cory Belsher beat up Chris Nichols. Winter Choinski: Being involved with all the activities here at VHS. Patrick Daum: I’d have to say the times when Ethan, Mel, Cody, and I went to Casey’s and made videos on my flip on the way to the gas station for lunch. Chase Deaton: Probably every homecoming week. Josh Dippie: There are so many that I could not choose just one, but the lip syncs come to mind. Sean Fitzgerald: When Zach Elliot ran into the bleachers during the dizzy bat competition. Bryce Ford: When I was in JILG with Jon Goodman, Ted Craig, Julieann Vancleve, and Devon Morris. Josh Ford: There are so many good memories; it is hard to choose just one. If I had to, it would probably be either when Zach Elliot did the dizzy bat or when the teachers had their lip-sync. Jon Goodman: It would have to be when I helped the sophomores beat the teachers in the tug-ofwar. Adam Haney: Freshman year, sitting at the lunch table at noon with Ted Craig, Sierra Saunders, Andrea Stepter, & some others, Ted was playing with unopened chocolate milk and squeezed too hard. It shot probably 4 feet in the air and landed all over Sierra & Andrea. Sierra had on a brand new white shirt. Desiree Hill: The Red Sea. That’s all I’m gonna say. And slipping on the ice in the lower parking lot. My pants were soaked! Bobby Hoffmann: Definitelywhen Zach Elliot ran into the bleachers during the dizzy bat race. Daniel Kerley: My favorite memory is when Ted tried to do a toe touch and ripped his pants. Shianna Little: There are so many to choose from but I would have to say one of my favorites was homecoming week our freshman year. It was something new and Lawrence & Bean Insurance exciting and we dominated for being freshman. James Metzler: The first time the VHS tennis team won a match. Michelle Akins: Either when Zach Elliot ran into the bleachers, or watching 13 boys dress like Dolly Parton and dance to “9-5.” Katie Mitchell: In Cara Otte’s homecoming skit when Shanelle Beasley came out as that tree hugger chick. It was funny. I could not stop laughing for anything. Sharrol Norton: I loved my sophomore year when I was a part if Vienna Idol. It was a great experience. Cara Otte: I would have to say my homecoming skit. I had some of my best friends making a fool of themselves in front of the school. That was awesome of them and hilarious to watch. Jessica Pender: I have a lot, actually. I remembered Zach Elliot participating in Homecoming week and running into the bleachers repeatedly. I also remember Cara Otte becoming “One-eyed Otte” Ashton Rambo-Sharp: My favorite VHS memory is probably the first time I got a detention. I was in Mr. Fairless’s room and a couple of boys were sitting in the front row shooting spit balls behind them. Mr. Fairless like flipped out on them. FREAKING HILARIOUS! Another one might be the night on the metro with all of my friends in London when we met a burlesque dancer that was hitting on Rebecca Johnson by telling us she had a nice butt! Then she told us the phrases: “You’re doin’ my head in...” and “Minging!” Corey Rood: The day I met my girlfriend Kassey McDonald Alex Shelton: I love track. Every time I get to compete, the whole world falls away and my race is all that matters. Kassidy Shoemaker: To be honest my favorite memory was this year’s prom and after prom. It was so fun, and seeing Ben Yates get a bloody nose on the blow up obstacle course was so funny. Clayton Stevens: Homecoming week, my freshman year, when Zach Elliot fell into the bleachers during the dizzy bat competition. Reagan Summers: I will always remember my sophomore year when the boys basketball team made it to sectionals in McLeansboro. I’ve never seen so many students with so much school spirit. Will Thomas: There are so many that it’s hard to pick. All four homecoming weeks were very memorable, but my favorite was this homecoming week during Andrea’s skit when Ashley Schultz came out as a nerd and laughed hysterically which made me laugh really hard. Hilary Wright: Definitely lunch. Sitting at the table with the boys and talking about everything under the sun. Also being involved with tech team. There were so many unforgettable moments.
