It’s All About
Education
In case you missed this School Safety press release...
Dear Shelby County Community:
School safety and security has become one of our nation's most pressing issues in
the wake of the unfortunate tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. Many parents and
community members have expressed their concerns for the students of Shelby
County Schools and every effort was made immediately following the tragedy to
provide security for our schools. We are very thankful to Sheriff Curry, his deputies,
and the municipal law enforcement officers who helped to provide safety and
security prior to the Christmas break.
Many questions still remain as we move forward into the new year. A meeting was
held on January 3, 2013 between school district administrators, Sheriff Chris Curry
and other representatives from the sheriff's office, County Commissioner Mike Vest,
State Senator Cam Ward, and State Senator Slade Blackwell to discuss the future of
school safety. Currently the following measures are being taken:
- Every school will continue to follow and review their safety plans.
- Every Shelby County School has video surveillance cameras (some schools have as
many as 32).
- School system architects are reviewing all school entrances and working on a plan to
improve safety in those areas.
- School district officials are investigating interior and exterior locking doors at all
schools.
- School safety plans are in the process of being uploaded to the Virtual Alabama
program.
- A representative from the school district attended the recent school safety training in
Jefferson County and will be training local school administrators.
- Law enforcement and school officials are working together to provide the best safety
and security possible.
- There is positive collaboration between school district officials, the sheriff's office,
local municipalities, the county commission, and members of our legislative
delegation.
Senators Blackwell and Ward were both pleased with the local procedures in
place and the partnership between school district administrators and the sheriff's
office. In the days to come, many conversations will take place on this issue. Safe
schools are always our number one priority. It is reassuring that the appropriate
leaders are working together to address this critical issue.

NEW PARS & RECREATION DIRECTOR
I would like to take this time to introduce the new

Teacher at Calera High School. Seth is a graduate of
Mr. Gandy
Hardin-Simmons Baptist University with a Bachelor
of Science-History and a Minor in Business. Seth also has an Associate
Degree in Golf Course and Turf Grass Management. Seth grew up on the
diamond and played College Baseball at both Jacksonville State University
and Hardin-Simmons Baptist University. After college, Seth went to work for
the Capital City Club in Atlanta, Georgia where he was responsible for the 90
acre golf course. After moving back home to Alabama in 2008 Seth worked
at Ross Bridge Golf Course. As you can see he has an extensive background
in area of Turf Grass Management and will be a great asset to our city.
Mr. Gandy will be responsible for scheduling all events associated with the
city facilities. Mr. Gandy will work closely with all of the Youth Organizations

TAX TIME IS HERE
and I would like to give you a different option to filing
your taxes this year. Instead of waiting like cattle in an
overpriced franchise tax office or struggling with computer
programs that miss deductions and create more questions
than they actually solve, would you like a less stressful
option for filing your taxes this year? Wouldn't it be better
to look a human being in the eye, ask your questions
(without having to take a number), and sleep easily
knowing that a professional is handling your taxes?
HERE’S HOW:
My name is Kelly Ellison and I am the
owner of Alliance Accounting. I am a
Certified Public Accountant with more
than19 years of accounting and tax
experience. I have a great staff that
can help meet all your tax and
accounting needs. Clients come to us
when they want excellent service, a
fair price, and their taxes done right.
We offer fair and reasonable fees, unlike many other CPA
firms and franchise tax offices.
When clients come to us, we take the extra time to
make sure they are getting every deduction allowed by the
IRS. For business owners, we take the time to understand
YOUR business. At the end of the day the extra time that
we spend means money in your pocket. You work hard.
The government should not be paid a single penny more
than what it is legally entitled to receive.
We are located on George Roy Parkway close to the
Shelby County Airport at 402 Airport Commons Drive,
across from Victory GMC/Buick. Appointments are
available to fit your schedule Monday through Saturday
from 8:00AM to 6:30PM. Call 205-216-0543 to schedule
an appointment, or drop off your tax information and
come back later to pick up your finished tax return. We
can deduct your tax preparation fee from your refund, or
accept payment by cash, check, or credit card.
Come see why we have so many happy clients.

Know your rights before
you hire a tax preparer.
Most tax preparers act within the law and treat their
clients fairly! But there are some who don't.
Before you hire a tax preparer, you should:
• Ask for a written estimate of all fees before giving your tax
records to the preparer. Avoid preparers who base their fee
on a percentage of the refund.
• Ask if the preparer will e-file your return.
• Ask if the preparer will represent you if you are audited.
• Consider whether the individual or firm will be around to
answer questions about the preparation of the tax return
months, or even years, after the return has been filed.
CONTINUED FROM FRONT COVER
The board approved Mrs. Deem on December 20th before
students dismissed for winter break. Mrs. Deem jumped right
into action Friday morning greeting teachers, staff, students,
and parents who were in the building for celebrations.
A Northport, Alabama native, Celita Carmichael Deem
attended grades K-10 in the Northport district. After
completing her secondary education at Vestavia High School
near Birmingham, she attended Oxford University in the U.K.
and earned her Bachelor's degree from UAB.
During Deem's 13 year tenure in the “corporate world”
she found herself drawn to what she discovered was her
passion….her love of children and their education. So while
still running a school supply company, she earned her Masters
of Education Administration degree from Samford University.
Having taught 7 years in the classroom, Deem became the
Assistant Principal at Inverness Elementary School in 2006.
She is married to Dan Deem and has four children and three
grandchildren.
She feels truly blessed to be able to say that she loves
what she does, and cares most for those with whom she
works….the kids. It is all about the kids. “I am very excited to
be the Principal at Calera Elementary. I am looking forward to
getting to know the staff, students, parents, and community,”
Mrs. Deem said.

A tax preparer should never do any of the following:
• Ask you to sign
...a blank return
...an incomplete return, or
...a return with false information on it.
• Prepare your return without reviewing the records required
to complete an accurate return, such as information about
your dependents, child care expenses, or tuition payments.
• Guarantee that you'll receive a tax refund.
• Guarantee that you won't be audited by the IRS or the
Alabama Department of Revenue.
When your return is completed:
• Review the entire return before you sign. Question the tax
preparer about anything you don't understand. You are
ultimately responsible for the accuracy of the return.
• Make sure your preparer signs the return.
• Get your papers back, including copies of all final returns.
• Get a receipt that contains the preparer's address and phone
number. There are several qualified tax return preparers in
our community. Be sure you are comfortable with the
professional handling your return.
