Calera MONTHLY - JULY Progress continues in Calera. I would like to thank the Alabama Department of Transportation for working with the City to improve our transportation issues. Davis @ – ALDOT – Third Division P.O. Box 2745, Birmingham, AL 35202-2745. This is a much needed improvement that has been a long time coming. We have been working with ALDOT on this project for the past three years. Improvements for I-65 @ the US-25 Interchange, Exit 228 is scheduled for September 2012 Bidding. Use caution in these areas as construction begins. Please remember to support our local farmers at the Calera Farmers Market every Tuesday 3 p.m. till 6 p.m. Bojangles' Famous Chicken 'n Biscuits is under construction. Calera Middle School is scheduled to open Oct. 2012, Mr. Brent Tolbert will serve as Principal. For questions concerning the transition of students as the school opens please contact your current school location or see page 5 in this newsletter. As I stated in the Mayor’s report at the June Calera Chamber Meeting, our city continues to provide services without an increase in Sales Tax. This administration will continue to be financially conservative with taxpayer's dollars. Calera has launched a new website where you can view public records such as: Budgets, Agendas, Minutes, and Financial Statements. Visit www.cityofcalera.org for information on upcoming community events, report a concern, pay your bill and stay up to date with the latest news. Sincerely, Randy Fuller, Superintendent UNFORGOTTEN By Debbie Ray This is a story of inspiration, compassion and love for our fellow man. There have been times when we have seen the homeless pushing carts that contain all of their worldly possessions. We have seen them sleeping on park benches, under cardboard boxes ,in alley ways and under bridges. Have any of us ever stopped to wonder who this person is or why and how their lives have been changed and brought to this level of existence? continued on page 6 What's for Dinner? Notices from the IRS/State are usually about a specific topic, such as possibly omitted income. When you receive a letter with a correction to your tax return, do not assume that the notice is correct. COWART DRUG CO.,INC. SERVICE - QUALITY - ACCURACY Sick Room Supplies, Baby Needs, Cosmetics, Photographic Supplies, Gifts For All Occasions CALERA, ALABAMA / On The Highway - 8320 Hwy. 31 668-1723 Owners: Jimmy & Theresa Harris Night: 663-9169 The majority of written notices are generated by IRS/State computers that automatically match third party information to your individual income tax returns. If there is not a match of the third party information to your 1040, the system assesses tax or sends a correction notice. The income may have been reported at a different location in your return, but the IRS/State computers do not recognize that fact. Some notices are not seen by human eyes before being mailed. My experience is that many notices end up being incorrect. The IRS/State computer may incorrectly add income due to incorrect social security numbers used on income documents. Most can be cleared with a written response to the IRS/State, explaining the matching problem. Taxpayers should get these notices to their tax professional for review. If income was accidentally left off your return, a tax professional can help you determine if there may be additional deductions that can offset the increase in tax. Be aware that IRS email and letter scams are on the rise. IRS notices and letters are sent by mail. The IRS does not correspond by email about taxpayer accounts or tax returns. If you have received a letter or notice form the IRS or State and have questions or concerns, do not hesitate to call us. Meet the Teacher Night: August 16,2012 5pm-8pm First Day of School: August 20,2012 “State Of The City” Update This month I would like to give an update on the “state of the city”. When the economy turned sour several years ago, the city was hit exceptionally hard because we were in growth mode and were expanding services when everything “dried up”. We were under certain obligations and could not immediately stop some projects and as a result all of the reserve funds were used and the city actually had to borrow money from the Water Board. Because the Mayor and Council have been fiscally conservative over the past three plus years, the reserves have gone from 0 to a little over 2 million dollars today. We have also paid off the $680,000 loan to the Water Board. On the housing front we are seeing an improvement this year. After a high of over 600 housing permits being sold in 2004, we saw a major decline in the residential housing permits sold in last three years (in 2009 we sold 184, in 2010 we sold 162 and last year we sold 107). As of May 31 of this year, we have sold 65 residential permits. We are projecting to sell 130 residential permits this year. Even though the last few years have been tough ones, we still provided all the essential services to our citizens. Just a couple of accomplishments that were achieved in this tough economy were the building of a much needed concession stand at the football stadium and the presentation to the Shelby County Commission of the winning proposal for housing the fire museum. We are presently trying to secure a grant for a community storm shelter. We did these things without incurring additional debt and without increasing the sales tax like many surrounding cities have done. Speaking of sales tax and storms, the city will waive their portion of the sales tax for certain storm related supplies the first weekend of July. David Bradshaw, Mayor pro tem JULY 2012 CALERA MONTHLY continued from front page I recently met a man that told me a story of inspiration. He was just living his life as we all normally do. This man is a former Marine Corporal. It was a normal day as any other .He was wearing his Marine Cap with pride and decided to stop at a local store. Upon exiting the store he noticed a man going through the garbage dumpster searching for food and necessities. After noticing my friends' Marine Cap, the man approached him and said “Semper Fi”. My friend was Pictured (left to right)Veteran Bill Mooney, Veteran Billy Crowell, Trustee Becky Lucas, Founder of RTWR and cyclist Scot King and Veteran Jim Graydon. stunned when he saw the Marine emblem tattooed on the man's arm. He was one of our Nations' Marine Veterans! The meeting of a stranger at a local store changed my friend's life forever! to be published, as told to him, in a series of books. Proceeds from these books will help assist combat wounded veterans and their family. He has visited the Governors office of each state collecting their states' flag to be presented in a special ceremony on or near Veterans Day 2013 in Portland, Oregon. The flags will be flown for one year in honor of our countries' combat wounded veterans. Memorial Day weekend turned out to be very special for the Calera Elks. After Scot visited our state Capitol in Montgomery he traveled to Calera where the Calera Elks arranged for him to stay at the Hampton Inn. Scot was brought to the Elks Lodge where he enjoyed a hearty barbeque dinner. Scot met and spoke with our Veterans and shared his travel experiences with our members. Sunday morning member and veteran Jim Graydon, escorted him to Gardendale where he resumed his travel to Cullman to participate in Memorial Day Festivities at Cullman Lodge # 1609. It was a great pleasure to meet someone of kindred spirit, whose dedication, and heart felt endeavors will hopefully continue to help provide aid and comfort to those who so truly DESERVE our love and respect, OUR NATION’S VETERANS. The Calera Elks would like to thank Calera's Hampton Inn for their contribution and generosity. Scot's travels may be tracked by GPS by going to www.RTWR.org He began collecting blankets, food, clothes and what ever else he could gather and giving them to the homeless and wounded veterans. Through perseverance and dedication he was able to organize Remember The Wounded Ride, Inc. My friends name is Scot King. A man of true character. The RTWR is a nonprofit organization. They assist combat wounded Veterans and their families when government, military and Veteran's Administration sources have been exhausted or their needs are not covered. The RTWRs' mission is to enrich the lives of our combat wounded veterans and their family. They would also wish to educate the public as to the effects of war on every American family and Honor those wounded veterans who have unselfishly defended our country with pride. As founder of RTWR, Scot has been peddling across America to the city Capitols to raise awareness and support. This endeavor is in its' second year. Last year he traveled 6,025 miles through the months of May to October. This year he will hope to complete his journey by traveling an additional 8,000 miles from April through September 2012. Along the way he has been collecting the stories of combat wounded Veterans, PAGE 6 Serving God and Community - Mark 12:41-44 Michael and Michelle White – [email protected] 10874 Hwy. 25, Calera, AL 35040 - 205-668-6687 M-F: 9-6 Located across from Ronnie Ellison Auto Sales. Green Care for Troops seeks to ease this burden by helping affected families with the important task of caring for their yard and landscape. To participate as a family in need of lawn care, or to volunteer to ease this burden for a military family, please complete and submit a short on-line registration form which can be found on their website at www.projectevergreen.com/gcft Donations welcome. Whether you are a new pet owner or have owned pets for years, familiarizing yourself with these valuable safety tips will help keep your pets safe at home. •Be sure your pets wear an ID tag or are injected with a micro-chip so that you can be easily reunited if separated during an emergency. •Secure loose electrical wires to baseboards to deter your pet from dangerous chewing. •Place household chemicals, plants and breakable items out of reach on high shelves. •Keep pets out of the kitchen while cooking. Temptation to jump up in search of good smells is a fire and safety hazard. •Roaring fires or even a flickering candle are a curiosity to pets, so be sure to not leave them unattended. •If you live in a split-level home, confine your pets on the first floor to make rescues quicker and easier. •Installing pet doors in your home provides a quick escape route for unconfined pets. •Arrange a safe haven for your pets (a neighbor, relative or local vet) in case you are unavailable during an emergency. •Keep collars and leashes near the main exits of your home for easy accessibility. •Store a pet first aid kit at home in case of a medical emergency. Ask your vet what items should be included. JULY 2012 CALERA MONTHLY CALERA 2012 SENIOR CENTER PROM Senior Citizens from all around Shelby County enjoyed the First Annual Calera Seniors Prom. Lifeguard Ambulance Service had several volunteers to serve as dance partners for those in need. Everyone got their photo taken with the captain of the ship to take home as a remembrance of the night This event would not have been possible without the help of Lifguard Ambulance Service, Southern Care Hospice, Shelby Ridge, Bailey and Holliman-Estate Planning Law Firm, Over the Top DJ and most of all City of Calera.
