for many years by a fellow named Dusty Rhodes. Quite naturally, the place was called “Dusty Roads.”

Today, sailing is a

winter, when ice conditions permit, ice boats and
snowmobiles will scoot across the horizon.

to provide a park-like facility to once again bring the public
to the harbor and continue to serve as a focal point for event
and around the harbor year-round. An aggressive fundraising
campaign began and thanks to a Logan County Commissioners grant, significant ‘in kind’ donations, the purchase of
benches, pavers and flagpole, grass roots fundraising events
the initial goal was reached.

Indian Lake was formed when much of Ohio was covered by a
glacier. When the glacier receded about 10,000 years ago, it
left behind a large swamp and many smaller lakes.
The lake’s water is supplied from the north and the south
forks of the Upper Great Miami River, Cherokee Mans run,
Blackhawk Creek and Van Horn Creek, and starting at the
bulkhead or “spillway” is the beginning of the Great Miami
River. The lake was named because several Native American
nations lived, fished and hunted the area. In its original form
Indian Lake was a conglomeration of shallow natural lakes
and marshes covering 640 acres in the northwest corner of
Logan County.
In the 1850’s, the lake became Lewistown Reservoir which
was used as a water supply for the Miami and Erie Canals.
The spillway, located on State Route 366, was built by Irish
laborers. A dam was built at the Miami River, which flooded
an area of about 1,000 acres. That flood created the islands
and peninsulas. The canal system was outperformed by the
rail system in just a few years. This caused the lake to be
repurposed as a leisure-time activity center, and automobiles
began bringing people from near and far. Indian Lake, then
having grown to over 5,000 acres, became the center for
music and Chautauquas. The traveling Chautauqua Assemblies that swept the East and Midwest came to Indian Lake’s

The Village of Lakeview became a regularly scheduled stop in
1911 on the Toledo and Ohio Central Railroad, and the Ohio
Electric Line provided service to Russells Point. The rail lines
provided easy access to rural Indian Lake from Lima,
Columbus, Dayton and neighboring communities.
With so much to attract visitors to the area by the early 1920’s,
businessman Pappy Wilgus and his son, French built the
Sandy Beach Amusement Park at Russells Point to entertain
the growing numbers of tourist. The park opened on
Decoration Day, 1924. The highlight of the park was the
fabulous Minnewawa Dance Hall, billed as the best and
largest in Ohio, featuring two bandstands and room for
hundreds of couples. The park also offered all of the favorite
amusement rides, boat excursions, fun houses and games
of chance. A boardwalk spanned the lake to give swimmers
access to nearby Sandy Beach Island, a popular bathing area
offering slides and diving towers.
The “Roaring 20’s” lead way to the Great Depression of the
1930’s, but “Ohio’s Million Dollar Playground” at Indian Lake
fought through. The future of the Sandy Beach Amusement
Park looked great until a disastrous fire in 1935 destroyed the

Indian Lake State Park’s family campground was built on
the north side of the lake in the mid 60’s. The class-A campground was an immediate hit, and it brought new people
to the area. In 1967, the Sandy Beach Amusement Park was
renamed Indian Lake Playland and it continued the struggle.
It could not compete with the new amusement parks in
Sandusky (Cedar Point) and Mason (King’s Island). Indian
Lake Playland did not open in 1976, and a few years later the
rides and concessions were torn down.
With the influx of people traveling to the lake for recreation
hotels began to open around the lake. The first hotel in the
area opened in Huntsville in 1847 for the railroad line, and
the first hotel near the water was built in early 1870s. Some
of these hotels were extremely small offering 3 or 4 sleeping
rooms, while others had over 100 rooms with dining halls,
grocery stores, marinas, cottages and gift shops. The hotels
surrounded the lake with Turkey Foot Park on the north shore
to O’Connor’s Landing to the east with approximately 20
more in between.

The societal turmoil of the 1960’s reached its way to Indian
Lake beginning July 4, 1961. The July 4th riots became an
unfortunate tradition that plagued the community for a
decade as the riots grew increasingly large and destructive
each year. The riots chased away business that should’ve
helped Indian Lake have their biggest week of the year.

Minnewawa Dance Hall, along with the wooden structures of
the Old Mill Shoot, Custer Cars, Spa bathhouse and part of
the roller coaster. Over $100,000 in improvements were put
into the park in 1936. The most famous Big Bands booked
the elegant new Moonlight Terrace Gardens at Sandy Beach
Amusement Park in their tours. Indian Lake was officially
designated as one of the original Ohio State Parks under the
jurisdiction of the new Ohio Department of Natural Resources
in 1949. The 1950’s were a successful decade for both Sandy
Beach Amusement Park and the new state park, as well as
local business people who provided services to tourist.
At one time as many as 6 hotels existed in Lakeview. The
area near Lakeview harbor was home to Houchins Hotel at
the corner of Main and Oak Streets. The Scheff’s Hotel at the
present location of Captian’s Point Restaurant and Stubb’s
Hotel at the site of the Villa Cottages were popular due to
their quick access to the lake. Villa Cottages are still available
to rent.
Russells Point represented the majority of the hotels due to
the proximity to the amusement park. Hotel Bristol and the
Malone Hotel were located across the street from each other
near Russells Point Harbor on the land which is now Lester’s
Tobacco Shop. The Plaza Hotel stood closest to the park just
north of the harbor.
Heading back State Route 708 (Orchard Island Road), 2 large
resorts existed. First came a 100 room hotel in 1901 called
Reed’s Cottage in 1901. The resort fronted the lake and
included a barn for horses and carriages as well as a large
boathouse. The property sold several times with additions
being made to the property and finally landed in the hands
of the Wicker Family in 1932. The resort was renamed the
Wicker’s Resort. The resort thrived into the 1990’s by making
changes to bring in business. The coliseum was converted to
a skating rink and a building at the front of the property on
Orchard Island Road was converted to a fine dining restaurant. Driving past the fenced rolling grass and shade trees,
one can almost picture the resort in its prime. This property
is currently owned by the Dicke Family. Shortly, after arriving in Russells Point in 1915, Jack Beatley Sr. built a 10-room
hotel just before the Orchard Island Bridge called Beatley’s
On The Lake. He then added a dining room that could seat
300 guests and a lounge. 27 2-story cottages were also

The Wedge Resort called the “Wedge” by the locals had
many cottages, a supply store and boat landings. It was just
north of the State Route 366 (Main Street)/ State Route 708
(Orchard Island Road) intersection. Maple Lawn Hotel was
built in the early 1900’s and still stands two buildings east of
Aunt Millie’s restaurant. It now serves as a residence. At one
point it was the clubhouse for the Orchard Island 18-hole golf
course.
The first hotel near the Spillway on the water was originally
called the National Hotel but after a fire in the late 1930’s
destroyed it, it was rebuilt and renamed the Bulkhead. When
U.S. Route 33 was being built (now State Route 366), the
Bulkhead had to be torn down. A new hotel was built across
the street at the current location of Whispering Valley Mobile
Home Park and was renamed again. This time it was called
Froggy’s
the New Bulkhead. This new facility was built on State leased
land and when the State discontinued leasing property the
building was torn down. The oldest hotel of record built on
the water was built in 1871 on the east side of the Spillway.
It was named the Cottonwood due to all of the cottonwood
trees growing along the bank of the lake. This hotel stood
where Aries Medical Center now stands.
In 1847, the Mad River and Lake Erie railroad began routing
through the village of Huntsville. In that same year a hotel
was built called Grand Central. A park featuring game was
built behind the hotel for hunter.

The resort underwent several remodels adding 30 cottages,

churches and families for get-togethers. The restaurant had
its final remodel in 1985, adding a lighthouse dining area. In

spent their nights here. There’s a story that when Jack Jr. ran
the resort he added slot machines. The State of Ohio came
to the resort and ordered the Beatleys to remove them immediately. Jack Jr. and his staff dumped the machines into
the lake – money and all. Once the State workers left, Jack
Jr. attempted to retrieve the machines from the lake but they
had sunk into the mud. In the early 1970’s, the buildings were
demolished and Beatley’s Holiday Harbor mobile home park
was built. Holiday Harbor still thrives today.

We invite you to enjoy Indian Lake and the many
activities that the area has to offer. You may take
advantage of exciting nightlife and dining one day and relax
around a camp fire the next. Indian Lake is an area to be
enjoyed throughout the year. Spring and summer seem to be
the most popular, offering opportunities for fishing, boating
and camping that are easily found and affordable. Fall and
winter have their own beautiful landscapes. Watching the
foliage turn from green to rich oranges and reds can give the
busiest of schedules a welcome pause. The snow cover and
majestic uprising of the ice flows are truly breath taking. The
Indian Lake Watershed Project and our agricultural neighbors
have led the way in keeping the water quality of Indian Lake
a top priority. Feel free to observe but not disturb the abundance of wildlife that shares home with us. By taking to heart
the practice of reducing, reusing and utilizing our recycling
centers our visitors and residents can continue to be huge
contributors in the efforts of preserving such a beautiful place
for generations to come.
When driving around Indian Lake this summer, you may
notice several red signs that read “Laker Proud.”
Businesses display them, local property owners put them
in their yard and you may even see one or two on a boat.
These signs symbolize the love we Indian Lake Lakers have
for our communities, schools and students.
Being Laker Proud means you treasure this community. We
are blessed with one of the state’s most important natural
resources and we work hard to make sure the Lake remains
healthy for recreation and industry. Likewise, as the
Superintendent of Indian Lake Schools, I believe we should
work as hard to foster strong, capable young adults to
become the next generation of leaders in this region.
We are accomplishing this and much more at Indian Lake
Local Schools’ campus, located a few miles south of the
lake, just across State Route 235 along the path of the
Great Miami River. Our student body totals nearly 1,700
children from kindergarten through grade 12. As a district
we are large enough to offer a vast array of rigorous
academic programs as well as opportunities for social and
athletic challenges. However, we are small enough to
provide students with the small group and one-on-one
instruction necessary to create well-rounded individuals.
The last state report card designates our district as
Excellent with Distinction, the highest ranking awarded in
Ohio. This is one more big reason to be Laker Proud!
Whether you are a retiree from outside of Logan County, a
“weekender” or an occasional visitor, we invite you to be
Laker Proud with us. When you are here consider volunteering to help children with reading skills at the Elementary School. Call upon our Middle School service group,
the Builder’s Club, to help you with a project. Come watch
our High School athletes compete in a baseball game in
the spring or a volleyball match in the fall.
Even if you’re not from Indian Lake originally, we welcome
you to get involved with the young people here and make
this community your home, or at least a “home away from
home.” This year get to know the students, parents,
teachers and staff at Indian Lake Local Schools. You may
end up displaying a Laker Proud sign in your yard as well.

Lakeview is located on the western shore of Indian Lake,
providing a vast view of open water from our harbor. We
invite you to stroll through downtown checking out our shops
and grabbing a bite to eat at one of our restaurants. As a
resident, we offer many professional services such as
financial services, dentistry, banking, legal assistance and
funeral planning. If new to the area, Lakeview offers
affordable homes to purchase as well as a development west
of town for those looking to build. I am honored and proud
to be a member of the Indian Lake community and Lakeview.
I hope you love this wonderful community as much as me.
I would like to welcome all to the Village of Huntsville and the
Indian Lake Resort area. As you travel around our area you will
see a very diverse and special area of Ohio. Indian Lake has
been the destination of many vacationers for countless years.
Our area has been growing rapidly in the
manufacturing industries, the housing industries and the
general population has increased with a variety nationalities
from all acts of life. The Indian Lake area is very fortunate to
have a first class school system that keeps up with the always
changing educational environment. Please take look around
and you may see that as said in the song “Indian Lake is the
scene you should make”!
Thank you for visiting!
