LIVING THE JOURNEY: MEL JACOBS’ ODYSSEY
BY AMANDA VASAS
F
or Dakotas Odyssey of the Mind Association
Director Mel Jacobs, life is an odyssey not a
destination. She’s once again bringing her flair
for fun to this, her sixth World Finals, judging
for Spontaneous Holding and living out one
of her life’s biggest dreams: to announce at
Opening Ceremonies.
“It was overwhelming, wonderful and
an honor to announce this year,” said Mel.
“It’s awesome to have kids from all over the
world getting together to have fun! The spirit
of Odyssey rubs off on
everybody - you feel it,
you love it and you want
to be a part of it.”
Beyond
the
competitions, that spirit
has helped this 21-year
alumna take on real-life
problems.
Three
days
before the 2013 World
Finals, Mel was diagnosed
with pancreatic cancer.
She has since underwent more than a halfdozen surgeries and this summer, will have her

pancreas removed and an islet cell transplant
to her liver. From the time she received her
diagnosis, Mel’s OotM family has shown her
their support in numerous ways: by wearing
purple and even forming the “Tutu Mafia.”
(You can spot Mel and the colorful gang in
matching wigs and tutus over the next several
days.)
“For me, this is a time to just be free and not
worry about cancer. I deal with chronic pain
every day, but while I’m here with my Odyssey
family, I don’t need to
take my medication.”
Beginning
in
elementary school, Mel
was a team member for
four years and attended
three
World
Finals.
Since then, she’s been a
volunteer score runner,
judge, vice president
of the Minnesota OotM
board and has even
designed pins for the Dakotas. Her parents,
who gave her permission to begin her odyssey
21 years ago, are with her again this year
as World Finals volunteers. Today, Mel has
three kids of her own: Samantha, 6, Maggie,
5, and Gavin, 4, and while
they haven’t made their
OotM debut yet, it’s only a
matter of time.
“This is what I live for:
my kids, my husband and
Odyssey. Alumni keep
coming back for a reason.
We’re in this for life.”

The Michigan State University Police
encourages the campus community, which
includes faculty, staff, students and visitors to
take an active role in preventing and reporting
incidents that jeopardize safety on and around
campus.
Residence hall rooms feature hard-wired
smoke detectors and fire-rated room and
wing doors. Residents regularly participate in
fire drills. All room doors have peepholes and
night receptionists are in place to see that only
building residents, or a guest that a resident
signs in and takes responsibility for, are allowed
in the building after hours. All halls have security
cameras in the lobby.
University facilities are well maintained and
their security is given regular attention. The
"Green Light" Emergency Telephone System
follows major walkways and are placed in
campus parking areas. These phones, topped
with a green light, are for emergency calls to oncampus numbers.
• Walk confidently and assertively. Walk with
others when possible.
• Be aware of your surroundings and others
who might be there. If you think you're being
followed, turn around confidently and check.
• Walk in well-lit areas if possible.
• All walkers should be aware of open buildings
and businesses along their routes.
• Vary any regular walking routes to discourage
predictability.
• Realize that listening to headphones while
walking decreases your awareness of your
surroundings.
•Carry your backpack or other belongings
close to your body and secured over one
shoulder and under one arm.
• Lock your room door when sleeping, and lock
your door when leaving a roommate asleep
inside.
•Do not prop open locked residence hall
doors.
• Require identification and authorization from
maintenance staff requesting access to your
room for any reason.
• Report all doors, locks, and windows in need
of repair to residence hall staff.
•Be aware of people loitering or checking
doors in your hall. Note their description and
call university police.
• Do not respond to e-mail, chat comments, or
any messages that are hostile, inappropriate
or that make you feel uncomfortable.

Our first time at a World Finals was in Iowa in
2012. It was a very exciting time for us as we

here again."
Beyond guidance, the team doesn't really
get much help from adults. "I mean, they do
provide us with snacks, which is also very very
important," says team member, Jashan Pabla,
jokingly. The team even has a cheer to get
pumped up and ready for their problem.

we're always hungry for more. Clap for us. SRS,

The Speedy Ravenous Smilodons are excited
to continue participating in OotM for many
years to come, anticipating another chance to
come to the World Finals in the future.
