More gates and
shorter lines promised
at June 27 Whoopie Pie
DOVER-FOXCROFT - The
Sweetest Day in Maine is coming right up and the Center Theatre, who produces the festival,
is planning a day full of fun and
excitement for festival-goers.
One of the biggest changes this
year is the addition of a second
entrance gate near the Center
Theatre to accommodate the ever-increasing attendance at the
festival. “I’ll be honest, we were a
bit overwhelmed last year,” Said
Patrick Myers, the Festival Coordinator, “We know there were
at least 7,500 people in town,
but we can’t tell you exactly how
many because we just don’t know.
What we do know is that the line
to get into the Whoopie Pie Zone
was way too long. Our gate system just couldn’t accommodate
all those people coming to get
whoopie pies. So this year we’re
expanding dramatically thanks
to the support from Dave’s World
and U.S. Cellular. They have
stepped forward to sponsor a
second gate closer to the Theatre
which should solve the problem.“
There will still be a gate between Pat’s Pizza and Pastimes
Pub sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank. “Bangor Savings
Bank has been an amazing partner since the beginning of the festival,” said Myers. Without their
generous support and dozens
of volunteers the festival would
never have grown this large.”
Things that won’t change this
year, according to Myers, are the
thousands of whoopie pies, hundreds of vendors downtown, and
fun activities for the whole family. “The Varney Agency Kids Zone
will be in full swing again this
year,” Myers said, “With rides and
games for kids of all ages. Thanks
to the Piscataquis Chamber of
Commerce the downtown will be
packed with artists, crafters, food
and fun and there are lots of other
activities going on around town
as well.” The Maine Whoopie
Pie Festival will be on Saturday,
June 27th in Downtown Dover-
Foxcroft from 10am to 3pm with
artists, crafters, games and rides
in the Varney Agency Kid’s Zone,
family fun, and of course – tens
of thousands of whoopie pies. Admission is $5 with kids 12 and
under free. The Maine Whoopie
Pie Festival is a production of the
Center Theatre who would like to
thank their lead sponsors Bangor
Savings Bank, Dave’s World and
US Cellular, Oakhurst, Z107.3,
Varney Agency, and The Eastern
Gazette. More Information on
the festival can be found at www.
MaineWhoopiePieFestival.com.
Local businesses and
organizations make the
Festival a community event
DOVER-FOXCROFT - While the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival
was created by the Center Theatre it has grown into an event that
brings a large number of local businesses and organizations together for an event that celebrates the community. The Piscataquis
Chamber of Commerce has taken management of the downtown
area and always fills it with an exciting mix of vendors, artists,
crafters, food, and entertainment. They are supported by all their
members, an active board of directors and the Maine Credit Union
League who is sponsoring the downtown festivities this year.
The Center Theatre also has nearly a hundred volunteers helping with the festival and a large group of committed sponsors. Lead
sponsors of the Whoopie Pie Festival include Bangor Savings Bank,
Dave’s World and U.S. Cellular, The Eastern Gazette and Z107.3.
Patrick Myers, Coordinator of the Festival, said there are many
other local businesses involved, “Several other businesses have
stepped up in a big way to support the festival. Wills Shop ‘n Save
is the official grocer or the Festival and is supplying whoopie pies
and milk for the Whoopie Pie Eating Contest, the Freedom House
Bed and Breakfast is offering a weekend stay in one of their wonderful one-bedroom suites in a contest available to anyone entering
the festival. And of course, Varney Insurance Agency is hosting the
Varney Agency Kid’s Zone.” Myers stated that the Kid’s Zone has
rides, games, and activities geared for kids and provided by a variety of groups including the Parkman 4H, Foxcroft Academy, Mayo
EMS, and others. There is also a long list of local businesses who
sponsor the Whoopie Pie Festival including Berg Activewear, Cavanagh Law Office, Howard Insurance, Mallett Real Estate, Rideout Seasonal Services, Rowell’s Garage, Steinke & Caruso Dental
Care, True Textiles, and True Value.
There are many other events going on around Dover-Foxcroft
that festival goers can enjoy:
· The YMCA will Hold their annual Earn Your Whoopie Pie 3k
Run/Walk and 1K Kid’s Fun Run at 8am at the Fire Station
· The Dover-Foxcroft Historical Society will hold their 2015 Summer Season Grand Opening
· The Dover-Cove Farmer’s Market will be open at the Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce
· The Dover-Foxcroft Congregational Church will be holding
their annual rummage sale
· Hooked on Fishing, Not on Drugs will offer free fishing at Kiwanis Park near the YMCA

· On Sunday, the 28th Pine Tree
Hospice will hold their Golf Open
at the Foxcroft Golf Club.
All of this participation, Myers says, makes the Whoopie Pie
Festival a true community event.
“While the festival is a fundraiser for the Center Theatre, we’re
thrilled that so many other community groups and businesses
can also benefit from all the visitors that come to town. I’m personally very proud to be able to
host a party that shows off my
home town to so many visitors.”

“Fix by Five” cat project
PISCATAQUIS - “Marian’s
Dream and Spay Maine” thank
the Piscataquis County committee of the Maine Community
Foundation for their grant of
$5000 to help county residents in
need to fix their cats by 5 months
for a co-pay of just $5. The grant’s
purpose is two–fold: to provide a
low-cost program to help people
get their cats fixed before they
have (or sire) a first litter and to
make people aware that before
20 weeks of age is the best time
to spay or neuter cats/kittens.
Preventing accidental litters
from early heat cycles means
that the shelters will not have too
many cats and kittens to place in
good homes. Fixed cats make better pets by preventing behavior
problems – if the cats are fixed
young enough, they will not develop behaviors brought on by
hormones such as spraying and
marking, roaming, yowling from
heat cycles and fighting over
mates.
There are also health
Let EVERYONE Know
Use The Eastern Gazette
benefits of Fixing by Five which
include ensuring the cats will not
get uterine infections and greatly
reducing (91%) their chance of
ever getting mammary gland tumors. And shelters will not be
overrun with unwanted cats and
kittens.
Residents who think they may
qualify should call Mary Shapleigh at 564-8092 for more information.

Petals Plus Florist completes
design seminar on wedding bouquets
CORINNA - Judy Richards, Petals Plus Florist, Corinna, recently completed the class esntitled Wedding Professional hosted by Teleflora at its state of the art Education Center in Oklahoma City, Okla. Floral designers from all over North America attended the seminar to learn the latest trends and techniques
in flowers for brides, attendants, and flowers to wear.
Richards participated in four days of intensive hands-on design sessions, mastering the latest shapes
and forms of bouquets. The class also learned about how to care for premium flowers used in wedding
work and how to make them last longer. Taught by successful retail florist, Susan Ayala AIFD PFCl of
Riverside, CA the class focused on creating coordinated designs to make beautiful wedding memories.
Each student was taught how to create a variety of designs for brides to carry and flowers to wear. Students were challenged to complete a series of projects during the class.
“Wedding flowers have always been about fashion and style,” said Marie Ackerman, AlFD, Teleflora
vice president of education. “It’s important that every floral artist keep current with new mechanics and
techniques to make a bride’s dream come true.”
Richards received a certificate of completion from the Teleflora Education Center, now in its 31st year
of providing advanced floral education, in recognition of the advancements made during this intense
hands-on design class.

End of an Era for Theatre Drama Camp
DOVER-FOXCROFT - The
Board of Directors and staff of the
Center Theatre sadly announce
the resignation of Jayne Lello
as the Coordinator of the Center
Theatre Children’s Summer Drama Camp.
Founded in 1998, the Children’s Summer Drama Camp was
the first program created by the
Center Theatre. Before the restoration of the downtown building
had even begun, Drama Camp
was already encouraging arts
education in the region. As more
educational opportunities have
become available to the youth of
Piscataquis County, Drama Camp
has continued to flourish under
Lello’s knowledge and passion.
According to Patrick Myers,
the Theatre’s founding Executive
Director, “Jayne Lello and the DRAMA CAMP, circa 2004, with Jayne Lello seated bottom left in the
Children’s Summer Drama Camp red shirt surrounded by happy campers.
were cornerstones of the Center
Theater well before we turned the marquee back on. Both the Camp and the Center Theatre itself are a
testament to Jayne’s dedication and devotion to the positive impact the arts can have on children.”
Now preparing for its 18th year, Drama Camp has been a place where numerous local and visiting children have spent their summers, many for multiple summers in row. It has been a place where children
have been given a chance to learn, to grow, and explore theatre in a safe environment. For some, it has
changed their lives. According to Tammy Parker, whose daughter Rebeclyn is a regular on the Center
Theatre stage, “Center Theatre Drama Camp was Rebeclyn’s first theatrical experience six years ago.
Not only has camp been a place where she can connect with friends each year, but a place where she can
truly celebrate her love for theatre. When she was younger, it was an important place for her-it was an
environment where she felt comfortable, and where she where she could be herself and learn to express
her feelings in a positive way.” Rebeclyn, however, is more direct. “Drama Camp has completely changed
my life!”
“It is hard enough to keep a theatre program running for just a couple of years,” says previous Executive Director Angela Bonacasa, “and to have one that runs for almost two decades is a true testament to
Jayne, her vision, and the people she has brought on board to teach with her. Although she is leaving in
an official capacity, she will always be a part of Drama Camp. A positive and fun learning environment
are hallmarks of Drama Camp, and Jayne’s hand-picked replacement will keep those qualities while
bringing her own special gifts to the mix.”
The new Drama Camp Coordinator, Beth Dyer MacNeil, has been a life-long resident of Guilford. She
graduated from the University of Maine at Machias in 2002 with a B.A. in History with a minor in American Studies, Women’s Studies, and a concentration in secondary education. She has over 10 years in
public education teaching children in a variety of subjects across ability levels. Beth utilizes her creative
side by designing and publishing the Piscataquis Community High School yearbook, creating numerous
parade floats for the Guilford River Festival, and photographing high school sporting and social events.
The two session dates are June 29 - July 10, and July 13 - 24. Camp runs 9 a.m - 1 p.m. Monday - Friday,
with a final performance at 6 p.m. at the Center Theatre on the final Friday of each session. Session one
will be performing Peter Rabbit and will be directed by Bobby Keniston. Session two will perform Toby
Tyler and will be directed by David Murray. There are still slots available for either session. For more
information, please call the Center Theatre at 564-8943 or stop by the Theatre at 20 East Main Street,
Dover-Foxcroft between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Visit the Center Theatre
website at www.CenterTheatre.org.

NEWS IN EDUCATION
Michaela White receives MPA Principal’s Award
DEXTER - Michaela White, a senior at Dexter Regional High School, daughter of Mike & Shannon
White, was selected to receive the 2015 Principal’s Award, Principal Stephen Bell announced. The award,
sponsored by the Maine Principal’s Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior’s academic
achievement and citizenship.
Mr. Bell writes, “Michaela is an incredible young lady from a small rural community that truly has a
chance to make a difference in the world. Michaela has already made her mark or made a difference in
her own community. This past school year when one of her senior classmates was battling cancer and
suffering through very painful Chemo therapy, Michaela and the Key Club led an effort to help support
the student and his family. The effort ended up becoming a regional effort and schools and businesses
from around the state contributed to this cause. In the end, Michaela and the key Club raised close to
$10,000 for this Family to put towards his medical bills and support the travel to Boston on a regular
basis for treatment. Michaela will graduate as number one in her class and has been accepted into the
University of Pennsylvania.”
Due to a Key Club commitment Michaela was unable to attend an Honors Luncheon on April 5th at
Spectacular Event Center in Bangor. She instead was presented her plague at a school wide assembly.
The Principal’s Award is presented in more than 100 Maine public and private high schools by member
principals of the MPA, the professional association which represents Maine’s school administrators.
