About Clyde Marine Training
50’
50’
In 1986 Clyde Marine Training was formed with the sole aim of regenerating the training of
Merchant Navy Officers. With 3 companies and 6 Trainees we began the journey of Trainee
Management. During this time we were behind the introduction of GAFT and its current
format of SMarT along with being involved with the creation of the current UK-wide training
programme. Most importantly we have helped thousands of Trainees achieve their goal of
becoming Merchant Navy Officers, with many of our Trainees going on to achieve long and
distinguished careers, and we remain proud of every one of our graduates.
The continuous improvements of our systems and staff and involvement at all levels of the
industry – MNTB Technical Committee, Chamber of Shipping Employment Committee and
MNTB main board – allows us to maintain our position as the No.1 choice as a training
provider for the British Merchant Navy, managing approximately 50% of the annual Trainee
Officer intake.

Our achievements, however, are not something we take for granted. This position
has been achieved through the following:
• Experience and Longevity – Since 1986 we have been at the forefront of Officer
training and development.
• Quality of Service – Shown not only in the outstanding Officers produced, but
through our ISO 9001 – 2008 LRQA Certification.
• Customer Focus – Our systems are tried and tested and developed with our unique client extranet facility and databases ensuring the highest customer service.

• Outstanding staff – Noted by our clients in customer feedback, but also in the form
of awards such as the UK’s ‘Best Workplaces’ in 2011, 2012 & 2013 and ‘ROCCO Employer of the Year 2014’
• Range of Services and Solutions – Our commitment to producing the best Officers possible does not begin and end with their management during training, we also offer the following invaluable services (for Trainees and serving Officers):

Recruitment Process
To ensure we have a solid foundation for the future, CMT work closely with the wider
community to ensure our reach goes far beyond purely recruitment.
25’
25’
Our work begins at school level, as early as primary years, providing an awareness of the
Marine Industry, moving onto early secondary school students discussing subject choice,
continuing right through to careers evenings and school talks for senior pupils. All of this
happens in addition to our regular attendance at careers fairs, national events and college
open days aimed at high-school graduates looking to take their first career steps.
Extensive work has also been undertaken to ensure our website remains relevant, accessible
and highly visible to our core target audience, ensuring that CMT is their first port of call when
searching for a career at sea:
20’
20’
• Over 10,000 visits to the CMT website per month
• On average over 2,000 applications per year
• Candidates must meet our stringent qualification and eligibility standards prior
to completing an application form
CMT were the first within our Industry to implement a specific pre-application test to assess
candidate’s maths and literacy skills, all part of our continued progress and success in
producing competent, confident and highly qualified Merchant Navy Officers.

Effective Management of Trainees
50’
50’
Our award winning team work with our clients to provide the highest level of service and
ensure their Trainees are closely monitored during all phases of training, and ensure that the
following crucial elements are managed:
• SMarT Claims – we manage the full process of claims from start to finish on behalf of our clients, complying with legislation and advising of any changes to the scheme
or opportunities for further claims.
• Payroll – running a full payroll including sponsorship payments, deductions and expenses taking the stress and strain away from your Trainee Management staff.
• Trainee Paperwork – involves a multitude of legal and medical documentation which must be maintained to allow Trainees to participate. CMT’s custom-built Trainee database ensures that all documentation is kept up-to-date.

30’
27°
30’
• Clyde Medicals – on-site MCA approved doctor ensuring that all Trainees are kept
up-to-date with all required vaccinations certificates and D&A testing.
• Training Record Book – as one of the original contributors to the creation of this essential document, CMT carefully monitor Trainee progress with an in-house assessment service, providing a client executive summary after each sea phase.
• Trainee Travel – all Trainee travel requirements are handled by our sister company
Clyde Travel Management which allows us to have full booking availability, marine fares and ticketing on-site.
25’
25’
• Regular Trainee Visits – CMT Training Officers regularly visit colleges to ensure that
each Trainee has an opportunity to speak directly to them, address any issues and report their progress to the Sponsoring Company.
• Tonnage Tax – a complex and varied process, but through its many years of experience, including a Government advisory role, CMT can guide and assist in meeting the requirements of your Training Obligation.
• STCW Training – dependent on location, all required STCW training is fulfilled by our in-house MCA recognised instructors, with careful management of all college based
courses and ship specific training.
• Trainee Uniforms – all Trainee uniform requirements are handled by our subsidiary company Clyde Uniforms, allowing a quality product at a cost effective price.
20’
20’
• Emergency Phone – providing a 24/7 service for Clients and Trainees alike to call one
of our Training officers or managers in the event of an emergency.
• Client Extranet – all of this is underpinned by the unique CMT Client Extranet which allows Sponsoring Companies access to all pertinent information relating to their Trainees.
All of these functions are undertaken by our Training Officers and Admin teams, supported by
our in-house software development team who have created Industry leading software which
keeps CMT at the forefront of Trainee Management.
