Wednesday June 22, 6:30-8:00pm Meet the Instructors Blue Ribbon Pavilion Join us for the kickoff event for Education programs at VQF. Our first offering of this event last year was so popular we are growing it for 2016 and moving it to the Blue Ribbon Pavilion! Many instructors will give brief overviews of who they are and describe their class offerings. This is an ideal time to learn about class openings and add one to your Festival experience. Instructors and attendees will then have an opportunity to socialize; light refreshments will be provided. There will be an area for instructors to show off and vend their newest books and other products. This is an event you don’t want to miss! As part of our 40th Anniversary “Ruby Jubilee” we encourage all attendees to wear red and be eligible for a special door prize! $10 admission – registrants can select the event during their registration process. This event is also open to the public and tickets can be purchased at the door. FRIDAY, JUNE 24 9:00AM-4:00PM New Quilt Appraisals BLUE RIBBON PAVILION Gerald Roy of Warner, NH, one of the founders of the AQS Quilt Appraisal Program, offers appraisals of new quilts. Appointments are required and may be arranged by writing the Festival office with payment and contact information. Appraisals require 30 minutes per quilt, and owners receive a written appraisal form that may be used for insurance, sale or donation purposes. In addition, contest entrants may arrange to have their quilts appraised as they hang in the exhibit. See the contest information online. The fee for either type of appraisal is $70 per quilt. FRIDAY, JUNE 24 2:00-4:00PM The Textile Detectives Are In: What does your antique quilt have to say? BLUE RIBBON PAVILION Join the co-authors of Plain and Fancy: Vermont’s People and Their Quilts for an afternoon of exploration about quilts. Visitors are invited to bring one or two pre-1960 quilts for examination. Listen as the team talks to the audience about the age, pattern and condition of each quilt. It’s an easy way to pick up some quilt history. This is not about values (appraisals are offered on Saturday for this purpose); rather, it’s a quilt show and tell for everyone, and it’s free. FRIDAY, JUNE 24 4:30-5:30PM Judges’ Panel BLUE RIBBON PAVILION Learn what makes a winning quilt. Contest judges will provide feedback on the quilt contest and share their insight on competitions in general. Bring your questions to the panel. About Vermont Quilt Festival The Vermont Quilt Festival, New England’s largest and oldest quilt event, was founded in 1977 as a one-day show of old and new quilts as a part of Northfield’s annual Labor Day weekend celebration. Over the last 39 years, it has added classes, quilt appraisals and the Merchants Mall, and now takes place at the Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex Junction. From its inception, Merchants Mall MILLER NORTH, MILLER SOUTH VQF brings the best and the newest the quilting industry has to offer. Shop the more than 85 vendors in both Miller North and Miller South. Find exciting fabric, patterns, quilts, books, notions, machines, gift items and more. BLUE RIBBON PAVILION VQF Boutique Miller Centre Lobby Join Deb Tucker for a quilter’s journey through an accumulation of quilts and stories dating back more Visitors will find VQF apparel, hand-thrown VQF mugs, tote bags, and show pins in our Festival Boutique. 2 Volunteers Volunteering is a vital part of the Vermont Quilt Festival. Not only do our volunteers get a behind-the-scenes look at what makes VQF run, they also find it is a great way to fully experience the Festival, meet new people, and have fun! In 2015, 234 volunteers performed well over 800 different jobs, totaling 2,000+ hours of donated time. We could not have done it without our volunteers and are always looking for more to join our team. Opportunities are available during the week of the show and range in ability level from sitting to standing to climbing ladders. We are happy to accommodate where we can. Stop by the Volunteer Table in the Blue Ribbon Pavilion at Champlain Valley Exposition during registration hours on Wednesday or in the Miller Centre Lobby at the Champlain Valley Exposition during show hours. 3 the Festival has displayed quilts from private owners and loans from the collections of historical societies and the renowned Shelburne Museum. The Festival also initiated the Vermont Quiltsearch, which documents antique Vermont quilts and their makers and resulted in the book, Plain and Fancy: Vermont’s People and Their Quilts, by Donna Bister and Richard L. Cleveland. The Festival’s goals are to bring the best quilts and quiltmakers in the world to New England for a celebration of the art of quiltmaking, to foster the appreciation of the art, and to document antique quilts to preserve a record of this region’s artistic and cultural heritage. Several times designated an American Bus Association Top 100 Event and a Vermont Chamber of Commerce Top Ten Summer Event, the Festival has also received coverage in national and international media. Photographing Quilts at Vermont Quilt Festival Quilt photos taken at the Festival are for your personal enjoyment only. Photos may never be used for commercial purposes. Any photos posted to your personal website must include appropriate credit for each quilt artist, including where and when the photos were taken. Contest Quilts, Antique Quilts, and Special Exhibits Quilt shows are all about the quilts, and over the last 39 years the Festival has presented thousands of the best new and old quilts from the United States and around the world. The seven separate exhibits provide viewers with a grand cross-section of the quiltmaker’s art, past and present. SewBatik will provide two fat eighths of fabric for this challenge. Limited quantities of the packets will be available for purchase each day of the show at the announcement table in Miller North. Rules for the contest challenge are included in the packet. Not only is 2016 the Vermont Quilt Festival’s 40th year, it also marks the 25th anniversary of the 1991 publication of Plain and Fancy: Vermont’s People and Their Quilts. In honor of the occasion Plain and Fancy authors Donna Bister and Richard Cleveland have organized an exhibit of quilts from the book, augmented by the best Vermont quilts documented by the Vermont Quiltsearch since 1989. Altogether, more than 60 quilts from the hands of three centuries of Vermont quiltmakers will be represented in this show. Miller Centre Lobby Gallery Talks New York City was the site of the fabulous quilt exhibit in 2011 presented by the American Folk Art Museum. The exhibit of more than 600 red and white quilts is still a subject of conversation. The Vermont Quilt Festival Board decided to create its own version of the exhibit in honor of its 40th anniversary Ruby Jubilee. Flying overhead is a variety of red and white quilts created by Festival friends. Visitors should look up and be inspired. Miller North Life’s Work: Ruth B. McDowell Ruth B McDowell, Curator Miller South Miller North In a thirty-five year career, Ruth B. McDowell has developed an extraordinary body of art exploring the traditional structure of piecing as a format for original design. Her use of a wide collection of printed and woven commercial cotton fabrics gives her work incredibly rich surfaces, as well as visual connections to the importance of fabrics in other places and times. Often based in nature, her quilts are included in many private and museum collections. This will be the largest exhibit ever of Ruth’s work. Less is More Gwen Marston, Curator Miller North This exhibit showcases the work of professional Instructors’ Showcase For nearly four decades, many of VQF’s instructors have been at the leading edge of development in the quilt world. This year’s roster is no exception, and visitors have the opportunity to see in person quilts that they may otherwise see only in print. As always, this exhibit reflects the diversity of the quiltmaking tradition. 2016 Sewbatik Challenge: Celebration Miller North The theme for this year’s challenge is “Celebration.” Participants were encouraged to interpret the word whether as a feeling of satisfaction, remembrance of a special occasion, holiday or life event to create a small wall quilt. SewBatik provided two fat eighths of batik fabric. Quilts will be judged by SewBatik and the winner will receive a basket full of SewBatik products valued at $500. The second place winner will receive a Quilts by Norma Ippolito and Grit Kovacs 4 basket of SewBatik fabrics valued at $300.
