FFA Students named 2015 Grand Marshal
The Franklin County Fair Board
has named the Tall Corn FFA Chapter,
Hampton-Dumont and CAL, as Grand
Marshal of the 2015 Fair Parade. The board
selected the chapter to honor them on the
75th anniversary of the signing of their
charter in Hampton, on November 14, 1940.
“The FFA has always been a big part
of the fair,” said Fair Board President,
Jon Baltes. “Not just with their exhibits,
but they have also supplied a lot of man
power, helping at Grandpa’s Farm and
with other jobs. We have board members
and volunteers who wore the blue and gold
jacket when they were in school and we are
proud that they have chosen the fair for part
of their anniversary celebration.”
“75 years of chapter history is a
terrific milestone for our communities in
agriculture education,” commented Sarah
DeBour, current Tall Corn FFA Advisor and
CAL and Hampton-Dumont Agricultural
Instructor. “Having a tradition that is solid
in Hampton-Dumont and CAL for ag
education and FFA is a true testament to
what the program has done for generations
in the past and for keeping our rural
communities strong for the future.”
Four men survive of the 41 that signed the original charter of the Tall Corn
Chapter. Front row, left to right: Clarence Kruse, Rex Craighton, and Walter
Nelson (Not pictured, Dean Sorenson) Back row: current officers of the
chapter, Josiah Ragsdale, vice pres., Brooke Benning, Pres., Lixis Falkwarf,
Sec., Samantha Smith, Historian.
DeBour added that her students were
excited that the board had chosen the
chapter as grand marshal. “Competing at
the fair is an important part of their summer.
They are also very proud of Franklin Farm
Hands. As an ag instructor, it is gratifying
to see my students realize the importance of
making others aware of the importance of
agriculture in their lives.”
Dean Dodd, former FFA advisor and a
member of the FFA Alumni Association that
is helping organize the 75th Anniversary
events, said that the fair was a big part of the
chapter’s success. “We have a large number
of former members who have shown at
the fair and been on the fair board. We are
pleased that the board would recognize the
chapter with the honor of Grand Marshal.”
“We want to show how farming has
changed since the charter was formed,”
said Dodd. “We will have machinery used
for corn production over the past 75 years
progressing at 5 year intervals.”
All past and present members of the
FFA that can attend will be introduced
in a special presentation on Thursday, at
1:30 p.m. in front of the hoop building on
Grandpa’s Farm. Q

The Franklin County Fair is proud
to announce that they will once again
bring a top animal show to the 2015 fair
in Hampton, July 15-19.

the most diverse group of performing
big cats anywhere. Fairgoers will see
a white Bengal Tiger, a “Liger”, the
rare breed that is a cross between a
tiger and a lion, the Siberian Tiger and
the Royal Bengal Tiger. All the cats
perform together in an educational and
entertaining show that explains how
endangered the tiger truly is.
Also performing will be miniature
horses & the comedy capers of
Wambolds Performing K-9 Revue.
There’s a Camel and Llama exhibit
to walk through that features “OMAR”,
a dancing dromedary.
Be sure to see Wambolds Amazing
Animals in daily free shows at the fair.Q
Railroad Club: Be sure to stop in at the depot and see the model train displays of the North Central Iowa Model Railroad Club. There are a lot of new
scenes including one of a burning building. There’s also an engine with a
camera that displays the video on a large screen. It looks like you are in the
locomotive looking out for the 15 minutes it takes the train to wind through
all the different scenes.

Scot Allerdings will be the rodeo clown at the the Franklin County Fair. Scot grew
up around the rodeo world. His father competed as a bareback rider and team roper
during his rodeo days, and his grandfather competed as a rough stock rider and roper
as well.
Going along to several rodeos as a youngster, he too got the rodeo bug. At the
rodeos, Scot was attracted to the bullriding event. Not only watching the riders, but
also by paying close attention to the rodeo clown/bullfighters.
Growing up, Scot participated in several other sports, such as baseball, basketball
and wrestling. In 1994 he started his rodeo career as a bullrider. After a few years of
competing, Scot decided to give bullfighting a try in the practice pen at college. In
2000 he attended a school taught by World Champion Bullfighter Loyd Ketchum.
By 2003 he was approved for his PRCA bullfighter card. In 2006 and 2007 he was
selected to work as a bullfighter at the Mountain States Circuit Finals Rodeo, and in
2007 he was selected as a bullfighter at the prestigious Dodge National Circuit Finals
Rodeo.
Scot will keep you entertained throughout the event. While not working rodeos,
Scot works with the youth of America as a High School Physical Education/Health
teacher, as well as an assistant High School wrestling coach.Q

THE POULTY SHOW GOES ON!
The Department of Agriculture has cancelled all live poultry shows due to avian
influenza. The fair board knew that there would be some disappointed kids, so they
decided to have the poultry show, sans poultry.
The show will be held at the regularly scheduled time on Thursday, July 16, at 1 p.m.
Kids are invited to use their imagination to fill their cages with pictures, decorations,
whatever. The poultry judge will be there to ask questions about their projects and
trophies and ribbons will be awarded.
Be sure to stop in at the Ice Cream Shop for a cool, tasty homemade treat! It’s
a treat all ages enjoy.
FAIR CAMPING
Reservations can be made for camping at the Franklin County Fair, July 15-19. A
limited number of sites will be available to the public at the campground west of the
fairgrounds, just off of Highway 3. They will be reserved on a first come-first served
basis.
The cost of camping is $120 for the week, and a spot must be reserved for the whole
week. No individual night rentals. The non-refundable fee is due at the time of booking
to hold your spot. Cost of camping includes electricity and the use of restrooms and
showers located on the south side of the Convention Center. There will be no potable
water available for use, and the dump station on the grounds will be closed during the
fair. Campers are responsible for the disposal of their own trash.

during the fair. Based in Des Moines, with a lifetime of performing experience, Thompson bring
his background as a counselor, teacher, magician, and hypnotist to entertain and mystify. His
credits include movies, Las Vegas casino, state fairs, high schools, colleges, and more.Q

FRANKLIN COUNTY FAIR 2015
Hard-rocking Hairball
visits grandstand
stage July 16
Visitors to Pleasant Hill during the
Franklin County Fair are invited to tour
the buildings and enjoy the entertainment,
demonstrations and shopping. There’s
also entertainment lined up for the Mort’s
Water Gazebo and there will be plenty of
homemade ice cream for sale in the ice
cream shop, plus homemade kettle corn
and ice-cold root beer and sarsaparilla in
the saloon.
Also, Townsend Winery, Hansell will
sponsor music in the Mort’s Water gazebo
daily from 2 to 6 p.m.Q
The Franklin County Fair is proud
to present an evening of arena rock
with Hairball. A band puts on a concert
Hairball puts on an event! The lights,
sound, smoke, fire, bombs, and screaming
hoards of avid fans...to merely call it
a concert would be like calling Mount
Rushmore a roadside attraction!
Vocalists Rockstar Bob, Joe Dandy,
and Kris Voxx lead the band through a
2-hour, mind-blowing, and drop-dead
accurate homage to some of the biggest
arena acts in the world. Van Halen, KISS,
Motley Crue, Queen, Journey, Prince
and Aerosmith are but a few of the acts
fans will see brought to life. The Hairball
stage becomes an entirely new rock
concert before your very eyes countless
times throughout the night.
The motor that drives the Hairball
dragster consists of Freaky on the electric
bass, Blake on the drums, and Happy
on the lead guitar. These Rock & Roll
soldiers pride themselves on nailing some
of the most memorable licks and chops of
all time, while adding their own style and
flare that they’ve cultivated over decades
of tireless performing. These guys live
and breathe Rock & Roll!
2015 finds Hairball celebrating
its 15th year of rocking hundreds of
thousands of people across the country.
Every day it adds more characters, more
pyrotechnics, more lights, more sound,
more props, more surprises... more
everything! While Happy often tells the
audience “Today is the first day is the rest
of your life!” Hairball performs every
show as though it could be its last. Every
night is a 100% full-on, no-holds-barred,
exciting, chaotic, fiery party that has to
be experienced to be believed!
As important to Hairball as the music
are its fans. While many bands claim to
have the best fans in the world, Hairball
actually has! Whether they are 10
years old or 100, Hairball fans bring an
unparalleled enthusiasm and energy to the
show that enhances the arena experience.
Hairball knows it wouldn’t exist without
its fans, and takes every opportunity to
let them know that. Whether it’s a preshow meet and greet, hanging out at the
merch booth, or chatting online, Hairball
has a lot in common with its fans and it’s
always. Don’t miss them at the Franklin
County Fair on Thursday, July 16.Q

Franklin Farm Hands
FRANKLIN COUNTY FAIR 2015
The fair is a good place to take the kids in your family
to experience agriculture today. Franklin Farm Hands is
a hands-on exhibit for kids up to 12 years old. Located
on Grandpa’s Farm, the goal is to help teach kids the
importance of agriculture in their daily lives as they go
through an agricultural progression from farm to store.
The CAL and Hampton-Dumont FFA Tall Corn Chapter
built the activity and will run it along with volunteers from
AGWSR, West Fork, and Belmond-Klemme FFAs. At the
beginning of the activity each child gets a booklet to place
stickers from each station they have completed. They first
visit a field and help plant a seed. Then they go to a grain
bin where the grain is stored after harvest. Kids will then
see the animals that the grain is fed to sheep, dairy, beef
cattle, and pigs. Each child will get to pedal around the
farm on a tractor to help the farmer. When their book is
completed they get to go to the grocery store and get a treat
with the “earnings” from their work on the farm.
Franklin Farm Hands will be operating Thursday
through Saturday from noon to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday
noon to 3 p.m.Q

NEW FRANKLIN
COUNTY 4-H CLUB
Fair adds new
horse arena
There will be a new, permanent horse
arena on the Franklin County Fairgrounds
in Hampton. The 100’ by 150’ arena will
be across Olive Avenue on Grandpa’s
Farm and is estimated to cost $16,000.
The leaders of a new 4-H club,
Horse-N-Around Equinators, received
permission from the Franklin County Fair
Board to raise funds for the project. The
leaders are Carol Symens Lowery, Deb
Place, and Alicia Rankin, Hampton and
Laura Lyman, Iowa Falls. They would
appreciate any donations and ask that
they be sent to the Franklin County Fair,
P.O. Box 442, Hampton, Iowa 50441. So
far they have raised $11,000, and plan to
have the arena built for this years fair.
Fair Board President Jon Baltes said
that most fairgrounds have a permanent
arena. “We feel this project will benefit
both the fair and the community.”
Baltes said that it was being built for
4-H to use but in the off season might
attract other horse enthusiasts. “In the
past we have had groups want to hold
events but we never had a place for them.”
He added that because there was no arena
the Barnes PRCA Rodeo has generously
allowed the 4-H horse show to be held in
the rodeo’s arena at the grandstand.
The new 4-H club, formed four months
ago, was the idea of Carol Symens Lowery
of Hampton and the other three joined
her to help lead the club. The focus of the

club is strictly horses and is for kids that
are horse enthusiasts, even if they don’t
have a horse. “The response was great,”
she said. “We have 25 members and it’s a
total team effort for the four leaders.”
The kids are not involved in raising
money for the arena. “This is something
we wanted to do for them,” Lowery said.
“We are so excited and grateful that the
fair board is taking this step. The number
of youth in this community interested in
horsemanship has grown.” Lowery added
that the arena will be made of continuous
fencing with a sand base and include an
announcers platform. “We also plan on
having a donor’s board to recognize the
people who gave to the project.”
Thirty-five kids have entered the horse
show this year. Q

FRANKLIN COUNTY FAIR 2015
SUNDAY:
SUNDAY IS FRANKLIN GENERAL
HOSPITAL DAY AT THE FAIR.
Celebrate a Century with
FGH on July 19
This year Franklin General Hospital will sponsor Sunday
at the Franklin County Fair.
For years, the FGH EMS staff, along with Franklin
County EMS teams, has been at the fair to offer assistance
when needed and been present at all grandstand events. In
addition to continuing that tradition, the FGH EMS will do
CPR demonstrations daily at the fair.
FGH staff will do health screens, including blood
pressure and blood glucose checks, on Sunday from noon4 p.m. at the EMS station in Pleasant Hill. While there,
register for prizes. FGH will also draw for someone in the
grandstand on Sunday evening to win a FitBit Charge.
While at the fair, be sure to check out the FGH Centennial
display at the Franklin County Historical Museum. At the
museum, you can also get a preview of the Centennial
publication, Celebrating 100 Years of Caring, which will be
on sale this fall.
Also, the FGH Centennial Celebration will be on Sunday,
September 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. on the FGH grounds. In
addition to an opportunity see the state-of-the-art facility,
the celebration will include a picnic hosted by hospital staff
in gratitude to the community for 100 years of support. The
afternoon promises something for everyone and will feature
entertainment, games and food.Q

Faith at the fair:
Browns lead
Sunday worship
service
On Sunday morning the Franklin
County Fair will once again be
the site for a nondenominational
worship concert sponsored by
Franklin
County
Ministerial
Association and Youth for Christ.
The two groups come together
and to bring a contemporary
Christian singer or group to the fair
instead of having the traditional
worship service that was held
at the fair for years. They also
moved the service to 11 a.m. so
those who wanted to could go to
their own church service before
coming to the fair. The results have
been the Rehder Show Pavilion
has a standing room only crowd on
Sunday morning.
This year will be no exception
when they introduce The Browns
to the Franklin County Fair.
The musical stylings of Shelly,
Michaela, Adam, and Andrew offer
a life-changing experience to all
who hear them. The Browns deliver
the powerful message of the gospel
through word and song that engage
audiences of all ages.
The Browns have been touring
across the United States since the
group began its full-time ministry
thirteen years ago. The heralded
group began on the local and state
level and has expanded and grown
into a national touring group.
This year The Browns received
the prestigious honor of Top 10
Mixed Group of the Year for the
fourth year in a row. Previously
The Browns had been awarded the
Top Horizon Group of the Year for
3 consecutive years.
The group has just finished their
newest recording, “Love Loud” as
a Stow Town Recording artist, with
Dove Award winning producer,
Wayne Haun. The Browns newest
radio single “Rock and Redeemer”
is climbing the charts.
Even when they’re not on stage
or on tour, the Browns manage
to stay plenty busy on their farm
property west of LeMars, Iowa,
which has served to become
somewhat of haven for the family
away from the road. Adam says,
“We enjoy life at home. There’s
just something about being in the
country. I’ve always enjoyed it”.
Andrew, the self-proclaimed life of
the party, said touring on the road
can get a little crazy, but he’s been
able to put things into perspective.
“I’m thankful for what I’m doing,”
he said. “I think it’s a special thing
that we do.” To add to the family
experience, Shelly’s husband Keith
is the chief bus driver and sound
technician. “Because we know
we’re called, it’s been worth it
all. God has opened the doors and
there are adventures and blessings
behind each one.”
From singing over 30 shows at
the Americana Theatre in Branson,
MO, to Dollywood Theme park
stages, to singing on over 10 Royal
Carribean and Carnival cruise ships
this award winning family will
inspire you with their close-knit
family harmony and talent. The
Browns love what they do, love
each other, and the audiences to
whom they sing! Q

Got an old car you don’t
know what to do with?
The Franklin County Fair
has an idea that’s fun
AND could win you some
money. Fix it up (or tear it
down) and enter the Stock
Cruiser Car Race at the
Franklin County Fair!
The Fair Board has
announced that the main
attraction for the last night
of the 2015 fair that runs
July 15- 19, will be an old
fashioned Stock Cruiser
Car Race. For added fun the
evening will include four
wheeler and go kart races.
Entertainment Committee Chairman Chris Showalter
said the fair wants to get back to the old fashioned cruiser
car races that used to draw nearly 100 cars. The race
will feature OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)
vehicles with two drivers in each car, one running the
accelerator while the other steers and brakes.
“The track will be flat,” he said, “not banked like
a figure 8 track, and it will be a little muddy. We are
trying to get back to the good old fun races with slipping,
and sliding, bumping, banging and throwing mud!” He
added that they decided to offer go cart and four wheeler
races because of the local interest.
The fair board is guaranteeing a $2,000 purse for the
Cruiser Car Race. Entry Fee is $40, which includes both
drivers.
A complete set of rules for the cruiser car race can be
found on the fair’s web site, www.franklincountyfair.
