As I began to put my thoughts on paper for
this month’s letter, I looked over last year’s
issues of The Breeze. In doing so, I noticed
that the past president devoted part of his
articles to basically the same matters I have
been writing about. Aside from the fact that I
am getting older and don’t remember as well
as I did when I was younger, the repetition of articles is not by accident. There
are many details that I could write about and will cover in future issues, but the
central issues of any well run community are constant. Resident involvement,
educated home owners and much encouraged feedback from you. If you are lax
in any of these areas, please devote more energy into changing how you relate
to this community. A perfect example of involved homeowners was the much
larger then normal attendance at the two workshops recently held. The Board
learned a great deal from your ideas and your suggestions, which will influence
where we spend our money in the future.
At the September Board meeting, I reported on some of the things I have
undertaken that I hope will add value to all of us. I’ll recount my comments for
those who did not attend the meeting.
I met with the management of Aliante Casino, and I expressed my
displeasure with their lack of marketing to our association. I pointed out
that when the casino was owned by Station Casinos, we had several perks,
such as preferred parking and free use of the outdoor pool, which were
taken away when new owners took control. I explained that our perception
was one of apathy toward our community. They appear interested in
strengthening our relationship, and I will advise you as developments
move forward.

U.S. House of Representatives, Crescent Harding, and I discussed the
need for him and his office staff to speak to us about the services he
could provide and the general state of affairs in Washington, DC. Starting
last month, Shareece Bates, a representative of Harding’s office, held a
presentation to advise residents on what Mr. Harding’s office can do to
assist us with federal government concerns and problems. The plan is to
hold these meetings monthly until further notice.

The North Las Vegas Police Chief and I discussed my concerns for the
safety of our residents with particular emphasis on speeding throughout
our streets. We agreed that there would be an increase in police presence,
and the ticketing of speeders would start in October. DO NOT speed in
our community as the price of a ticket is at least $300, as well as a likely
increase in your automobile insurance. Remember the speed limit
throughout SCAL is 25 mph. In addition, the police department will
increase patrols and will hold town hall meetings to advise us on safety
issues and generally strengthen our relationship.

BOARD MEMBER MESSAGE
Dear Residents:
I am really enjoying my current position on
the Board, being the Vice President. I can
and will be looking at things from a slightly
different perspective in the year ahead. While
I am no longer president; I am continuing my
involvement with the Community Association
Institute of Nevada (CAI) and the North Valley
Alliance of Concerned Citizens and Home
Owner Associations.
As part of my continued involvement with CAI, I will be on the
Legislative Action Committee (LAC) as their treasurer. Besides
keeping track of various bills enacted during the 2015 Legislative
session in Carson City, I will continue to work with the committee to
keep Garret Gordon as out lobbyist for the 2016 year, and hopefully
for 2017, which will be when the next legislative session begins.
As for Sun City Aliante, I have been asked to be the Board
representative to the Property and Grounds Committee. The
committee has its hands full with various projects regarding
landscaping on Widewing and Broadwing, the Willow Wren Park, and
doing an annual audit of all the Association’s equipment.
In September and October, there were two workshops, one to get
input from owners regarding possible capitalization projects for
consideration by the Board for 2016 and the next three-to-five
years. The second workshop was held to obtain input from owners
regarding what they think we might consider doing with our kitchen.
We, as Board members, welcome input from each of our owners
as this is your community. As a member of the Board, I want to say
thank you for taking time out of your daily activities to express your
concerns and valued ideas.
It has been an honor to have been elected to the SCAL Board since
November 2006. Serving as a member of the Board during that time,
I also have been privileged to work with many wonderful people
who volunteer their time and talents to help the Board maintain its
lofty standards both now and in the years ahead. Thank you, to all of
you for making SCAL what it is today.
Don Schaefer
Vice President, SCAL Board of Directors
Congratulations

ASSOCIATION NEWS
Dear Residents:
The winter holiday season is upon us,
and with it comes the once-a-year
opportunity to join with friends and
family in celebrations steeped in deep
tradition. ‘Tis also the season when
exercise routines are put to rest and
replaced, instead, with plans to cook,
shop, decorate and pass plate after
plate of sugar cookies, walnut balls and
coconut macaroons.
The Aliante Master Association Board Meeting will be held on Thursday,
November 19 at 7 p.m. at the Association’s new office in the Smith’s
Shopping Center. All Aliante residents are encouraged to attend. Due
to the holidays, there will be no Board meeting in December.
Thanksgiving
Sun City Aliante Community Center will be closed on
November 26 in observance of Thanksgiving Day. The
administration offices will be closed on November 26 and 27.
Happy Thanksgiving!

The exact definition of the winter season varies from culture to
culture, but in the United States it is generally considered to be
the period beginning with Thanksgiving and ending with New
Year’s Day. Within that period of nearly six weeks exist far too many
opportunities to overeat in the name of celebration. In fact, the
average U.S. citizen gains five pounds during these festivities, and a
majority of people fail to take this weight off from year-to-year.
Aliante Master Association
This doesn’t mean you have to be a Grinch this season. It is a time
to celebrate, so deprivation is not an option. Instead, make a few
concessions and be realistic with your goals. By making better
choices this year, you may only have to lose a pound or two- instead
of five-before spring. Here’s how:
1. Eat a light, healthy meal before the big celebration-fruits and
vegetables are high in soluble fiber, so they make you feel
fuller for a long time. Try an apple or carrots as a snack before
heading to the big party.
2. Limit your use of sauces or gravy-though yummy, they are
often loaded with calories and fat. Take a pass and enjoy the
nuances of the food on your plate.
3. Cut down on sugar-if you keep the cookies, replace the
eggnog with a tasty selection of reduced-sugar juices or teas.
Try Old Orchard Healthy Balance brand of juice for a balance
of flavor and low-calorie value.
4. Bring a healthy dessert to pass-this way you can count on
at least one dessert that you know you can enjoy guilt-free.
Go to healthybalance.com for healthy dessert ideas. You can
share your recipes with others there, too.
5. Take a walk after dinner- even a little exercise will help. Take
in the sights, sounds and smells of the season, and burn
some of those calories before going to bed.
The holiday season presents the biggest challenge of the year
to your waistline. Try to make smart choices, and remember that
moderation is the key to calorie control. If in the end you know
you’ll overdo it at the buffet line, make a plan to spend extra time
on the treadmill so that you don’t carry that extra holiday weight
throughout the year. Source: NewsUSA.
Happy Thanksgiving,

Did you know that a patio wind break is only permitted on one end
of your rear patio? The wind break shall not exceed four-feet, sixinches in height and shall be constructed of stone veneer, masonry,
brick, framed cement board, or the same material as the house,
stuccoed and painted to match the base color of the house.
If your tree is overhanging the sidewalk or the adjacent owners’
lot, then it’s time to cut the tree back to your own property line.
The tree owner shall also maintain adequate clearance over and
around mailbox locations and street signs. All mature trees shall be
trimmed to a minimum of five-feet from the soil to the bottom of
the first branch. If you’re not sure where your property line is, stop
by the office; we’ll help you locate your property line, so you will be
able to keep landscape and trees in your yard and away from your
neighbor’s property. I’m sure your neighbors will be thankful that
you are so thoughtful!
If you plan to do any work on the outside of your home, you
will need to submit an application to the Architectural Review
Committee (ARC) prior to the meeting. The ARC meets twice a
month to review applications. Almost all requests require you to
complete a plot plan (which we can provide) and some requests
require photos and even samples. If you have questions about your
project, you are invited to attend the ARC workshop that is held the
Thursday prior to each ARC meeting, starting at 8:30 a.m. in the Vista
Room. Just remember to turn your application and plot plan in prior
to the meeting, so we can place it on the agenda. The Architectural
Review Committee will meet on November 6 and 20 at 8:30 in
the Vista Room.

MONTHLY TIPS
We are still experiencing an occasional car break-in during the
overnight hours. Here are some things you can do to prevent this
from happening to you:
• Park your car in your garage.
• Whether you park in your garage, driveway or street, never
leave your garage door opener in the car. Always lock your car.
Never leave your car keys hanging in the garage – especially
with the garage door open. Cars that have been stolen or
broken into recently in the community were all left unlocked.
• Do not leave any of your belongs on the seats or in plain sight
inside the car, day or night. It is an invitation to break into your
vehicle. If you’re out shopping, place bags in the trunk, and
never leave anything on the seats.
W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M
• Before you retire at night, press the lock function on your
garage door opener to disable the code system. The button
will flash when locked. This ensures that someone from the
outside can’t open your garage with a remote. Make sure all
of your doors are locked, even the service porch door leading
to the garage.
-
• If you are unfortunate enough to have someone break into
your vehicle, be sure to report it to the North Las Vegas Police
Department (NLVPD) at 311. Don’t think that it’s a waste of
time, because you think they won’t do anything about it. The
NLVPD wants and needs to know what’s happening in our
neighborhood. It’s a good idea to contact Neighborhood
Watch after you’ve contacted the police.
T H E
• Slow down on our streets. The speed limit everywhere in Sun
City Aliante is 25 m.p.h. Stop at stop signs. As you get older,
your reflexes get slower; so you may not react fast enough
when a car is backing out of a driveway around the curve in
the road. Your eyesight may not as good as it was, so you may
not see a car backing out of a driveway going around a curve
if you are traveling above the posted speed limit. Around that
curve in the road, maybe somebody is crossing the street.
Please watch out for the other guy.

Let us give thanks for golf, and
in the spirit of the holidays,
let us visit the much debated
origin of golf... amen.
W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M

T H E
B R E E Z E
The game of “golf,” that we
know and love today, originated in Scotland in the 1400s, but there
is an ongoing debate about what the origin of the game may be.
Here is the short list and timeline that most historians argue:
• Paganica a Roman game played with a bent stick and a
leather ball possibly spread through Europe as the Romans
conquered the continent during the first century BC.
• Chuiwan (“chui” means striking and “wan” means small ball)
a Chinese game played from the 700s to 1300s; this game
is believed to have been introduced in Europe during the
Middle Ages.
• Kolven (a game involving a ball and curved bats) was played
in the late 13th century in the Netherlands.
• Cambuca resembles modern golf and originated in England
in the 12th century. Chambot was the French equivalent to
the British version.
• Chaugán is another possible ancient origin from the Persian
Empire.
The above games are presented for argument’s sake regarding the
origin of “hitting a ball with a stick” in Europe. The history of the
game of golf, as we know it today, as well as golf’s written record, we
owe to those crazy Scotsmen! Here are some quick historical facts for
you regarding modern golf.
• We know that the game was banned in the mid-1400s
because King James IV thought it was a distraction from
military training, specifically archery. But get this, the King
took up the game and, subsequently, lifted the ban in the
same year of 1502! There was a King who got his priorities
straightened out, but probably not his driver!
• Musselburgh Links in East Lothian, Scotland is considered the
oldest golf course in the world by Guinness World Records.
The 9-hole par 34 course, open since the mid-1500s, is STILL
being played!
• The oldest Rules of Golf on record date back to 1744 and
were compiled for the Company of Gentlemen Golfers.
• The world’s oldest golf tournament, as well as golf’s first
major championship, is The Open Championship. The first
Open was played in Ayrshire, Scotland at Prestwick Golf
Club in 1860. For those of you who read my column, you’ll
remember that Willie Park Sr. won the first Open, and he
received no money, but he got to keep the “challenge belt”
for the year.
On behalf of all of us, golf nuts, thank you to the world for golf.
Thank you to the first folks who swung a stick at a ball. Thank you to
the Scots for all of the rules, regulations and traditions that make us
all love, hate and become addicted to this silly, silly, but wonderful
game.
I look forward to seeing you on the practice tee at Aliante Golf Club,
and I look forward to helping you improve your skills and your

enjoyment of the game. This is our club, our community and I’m glad
to be a part of it. ~Paul

Are you like most Clark County residents, who are tired of paying
high energy bills? Have you looked into or considered adding solar
to your home?
A little known, but alarming, fact is that when you lease a solar
system instead of purchasing
one, leasing companies take all
of your incentives and federal
tax credits. In addition, you are
locked into a 20-year contract,
which makes your home harder to
sell. In contrast, by purchasing a
solar system, you, the owner, can
take advantage of all tax credits
and incentives to help pay for the
system without the hassle of a 20-year contract.
Meet representatives from Universal Solar Direct on November 6 at

Each year, if you are 65 or older, you
have the opportunity to make changes
to your Medicare and prescription drug

enrollment for the next year (2016)
runs from October 15 to December 7.
Eligibility for Medicare is a welcome
milestone for most seniors, but it does
not pick up the tab for everything.
You still have to consider copayments,
coinsurance and deductibles, in
addition to any medical expenses
incurred outside the U.S.
To cover these expenses, you have to purchase supplemental
insurance known as Medigap coverage. The plans are designed to fill
in the gaps in Medicare and limit out-of–pocket exposure. But how
do you know which policy is better for you? The options range from
“A” through “N.” And does the agent you use for your supplemental
plan make a difference in what you pay and the benefits you receive?
Matthew Snow, a representative of Banker’s Life, has answers to
these questions and more. Join him on November 13 at 10 a.m. Sign

Encounter the Beauty of China
Monday, November 16, 11 a.m.
Take in the Beauty of China and all its majesty. A trip to China is a
must for your bucket list! China is like no other spot on earth, vast,
history around each corner, along with charming people.
You’ll start in Beijing, a cultural and scenic city with a history over
3,000 years old. Its temples and palaces are scattered throughout the
modern city. Only an hour and half away is the Great Wall of China,
the longest man-made structure in the world; this amazing site will
leave you in awe.
A visit to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City are “must-sees”
on your visit in Beijing.
You’ll stop in Xi’an, the start of the famous “Silk Road” that linked
China with the Roman Empire, opening up the trade routes and
business. As the capital for eleven dynasties from 11th century B.C.
to early 10th century, history surrounds this city known as the city of
“Everlasting Peace.”
Take in Shanghai, the largest city in China, which is also its most
cosmopolitan, offering visitors a chance to experience the past,
present, and future all at once. Then you’ll head to the metropolitan
city of Hong Kong, and cross the Pearl River estuary to Macau, the
Asian Gambling city modeled after Las Vegas.
This is just a sampling of the treasures you’ll experience on a trip
to China. Sign up at the monitor’s desk for this seminar by

Holistic Healing focuses on all aspects of a person, not just the

Paul Anka In Concert
Adult Coloring and Meditation at SCAL
A total of 25 residents
enjoyed Paul Anka in
Concert on September
18. Everyone agreed his
performance was fantastic
from the start to finish. He
entered the Reynolds Hall
from the back of the house
and walked down the
aisle singing, waving, and
shaking hands. What a thrill for all the Anka fans! He is one of the
most personable performers to grace the stage. While singing just
of few of the 500 songs he has written, he walked from aisle to aisle
giving handshakes and hugs to many in the audience. He closed his
performance with “Diana,” his first number one hit, which made him
a star at the young age of 15. It was truly a evening to remember.

and snowbirds. The Tennis Club meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays
and Saturdays (open play). The new start time for October and
November is 8 a.m.
The Sun City Aliante Veterans Auxiliary would like to thank everyone
who contributed baby items for the up-coming “Operation Boots &
Booties.” Your generosity was overwhelming.
The chairman has revised the roster to reflect those players who are
active and inactive. The club is more than happy to have inactive
players return to play. If you wish to be removed from the roster or
are listed as an inactive player and wish to become active, please
contact Sandy B. Hall at 702-483-5117 and [email protected].
The club has at least eight players on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Saturdays is always open play. Club members are always welcome
to contact other players and arrange their own match. The club is
trying to increase tennis play, so if you know of someone who would
like to join the club, please invite them to get involved. Tennis is a
sport for life, and it’s good exercise and a lot of fun!
PICKLEBALL
“Operation Boots & Booties” is a baby shower for military moms and
moms-to-be who reside in Southern Nevada and is sponsored by
Fox 5 News and the VFW Post 10047.
The Auxiliary also wants to send a very special “thank you” to the
ladies of the Sun City Aliante Forget-Me-Knots and Silver Needles
and Threads who handcrafted beautiful blankets, hats, sweaters,
burp cloths and receiving blankets for the shower. Their items were
simply amazing!
Through the efforts of everyone in the Sun City Aliante community,
we are sure these moms and moms-to-be will have a wonderful
time at their baby showers. Thanks again!
Now that the weather is cooler, it’s time to dust off your court shoes
and join in on the fall pickleball clinics scheduled through November.
Clinics are held Monday mornings at 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and Monday
evenings at 6:45 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
You will be able to pose and purchase a virtual photograph of
yourself, friends and family in the Vista Ballroom.
Please see the insert for additional information.
Make your plans now to stop by!

These clinics are designed for beginners, and anyone who wants to
improve their skills. The charge is $3 to cover the cost of balls. Be
sure to wear court shoes and bring water. You must check in at the
monitor’s desk prior to attending the clinic. Practice paddles and
instructor lesson paddles are available at the monitor’s desk. For
more information, contact Sarah Smith at 702-635-4629.

SENIORS WITH WARM HEARTS
B R E E Z E
THE HOLIDAYS ARE RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER… the Seniors
with Warm Hearts will once again display their holiday charity
“Giving Tree” for the children and parents of S.A.F.E. House. Look
for the “Giving Tree” and “Collection Box” in the lobby of the SCAL
Community Center, beginning November 23; the tree will be
displayed through December 17.
The season is shorter this year, so please pick up your tree tags early.
You can choose a tag from the tree with a child’s wish list, or if you
prefer, you may donate a child’s gift of your choice. Gifts are needed
for all ages: from newborns to age 18, and there are tags for the
parents too.
Please donate one or two items if you can. Place unwrapped gifts
in the collection box. The parents enjoy wrapping the gifts for
their children. Donations of wrapping paper, ribbon, bows, holiday
decorations and stocking stuffers are always welcome. (If you take a
tag and then change your mind, please return the tag to the tree as
soon as possible, so no child will be left without a gift). Thank you
and Happy Holidays from the Seniors with Warm Hearts.
If you are interesting in learning more about Seniors with Warm
Hearts and their charitable efforts, their next meeting is Thursday,
November 19 at 11 a.m. in the Activity Room. At this meeting, the
club will make tags and prepare the tree for display.
For more information, contact Dolores Abbott at 702-406-2222, Carol
Hoyt at 702-647-1289 or Karen Nutto at 201-787 9391.

Members of the organizations would like to thank the residents of
Sun City Aliante for donations of money, yarn, fabric and other gifts
used for this project. The photograph shows the completion of more
than one hundred crib and receiving blankets, quilts, sweaters, hats,
bibs and burp pads. All the items were consolidated with gifts from
other organizations in the Las Vegas area for the shower in November.
GLASS CRAFTERS
Glass fusion sessions will be held November 7 and 21 from 1 p.m. to
4 p.m. in Craft Room #2. The club participated in the SCAL Arts and
Crafts Fair held on October 17. The members had a great time, and
their efforts preparing and participating were appreciated.
Club members enjoy learning many new cutting skills and
techniques. If you are looking for a fun and an exciting hobby
which assists you in making new friends, the Glass Crafters always
welcomes new members. For more information, contact Robin
Sharp at [email protected] and 303-641-2107.
VETERANS CLUB
Greetings Friends, Neighbors and Fellow Veterans:
The year 2015 is coming to a close, and we have a lot of activities
left to complete. I’d like to ask our veterans and anyone who knows
a Korean War veteran to contact me. I’d like to submit the names to
the Korean War Association; they may be recognized at next year’s
“End of War” ceremony. The South Korean government presented a
beautiful medal and certificate to two of our members, and I would
like to see other Korean War veterans become recipients of this
prestigious award.
The Veterans Club’s annual Spaghetti Dinner will be held on
Saturday, November 7. We will serve a delicious spaghetti dinner
with all the fixins’ from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Beer and wine will be
available for purchase. The final day to purchase tickets is Monday,
November 2 in the Board Room from 10 a.m. to noon. Don’t miss this
opportunity to share community fun!
In addition to the dinner, the Auxiliary will have a photographer
available in the Vista Ballroom to take some great pictures of
you, your family and friends. Please see insert for additional
information.
By now, the Seniors Assisting Seniors golf (SAS) tournament will be
completed. To all our members and friends who volunteered, we
appreciate everything you did to make this a successful event.
I want to express my gratitude to the residents of Sun City Aliante for
all your support of the Veterans Club and our activities. We support
the community and we appreciate you supporting us. As a result of
your generosity, we were able to donate $1,500 to the Fisher House
and $2,050 was donated in memory of our friend, Don Kaufmann. If
you haven’t seen the Fisher House, which is being built adjacent to
the Veterans Hospital, drive by and take a look. We are very proud to
be able to contribute to such a worthy operation.
Our November 17 meeting will feature representatives of the Boy
Scouts who will present a flag retirement ceremony in the courtyard.
We held this ceremony last year, and I assure you it will be a very
touching event. Bring your old worn-out and unusable flags to the
meeting, so they can be retired properly. The meeting date/time is
November 17 at 7 p.m.
Please continue to pray for our courageous men and women serving
in our military. They are truly facing dangerous times in our turbulent
world.

Veterans of Sun City Aliante

CHARTER CLUB CORNER & SPECIAL INTEREST
SUN CITY ALIANTE STEPPERS
The Sun City Aliante Steppers are honored to be invited to perform at
the Las Vegas VA Medical Center on Veterans Day, November 11 at 10
a.m. The center is located at 6900 North Pecos (just off of the I-215).
All Sun City Aliante veterans are welcome to attend.
President’s Message continues from page 3
4.
In a meeting with Richard Cherchio, our North Las Vegas
councilman, we agreed that there would be a presentation to
our community by the developer of the Villages at Tule Springs,
on what impact this development would have on us and what
is planned for North Las Vegas. In addition, Marilyn Kirkpatrick,
our new County Commissioner, will address our community
next month.
I’d like to restate our policy regarding guests attending club events.
The Club Guidelines state: an overnight guest will be allowed
to participate at club activities, in compliance with required
guest policies and fees. Therefore, residents may bring guests to
regularly scheduled charter club events ONLY if the guests have
stayed overnight. Please don’t jeopardize your good standing in
the community by inviting non-overnight guests to a regularly
scheduled club event.
Pine Creek is considered a beginner’s trail with excellent scenery.
The hike is four miles up and back and will likely take two to three
hours. I recommend you wear comfortable shoes, dress in layers and
bring plenty of water and a snack.
Your Board of Directors wishes you a safe and meaningful
Thanksgiving. Take a moment to reflect on how blessed we are to
have friends and family in our lives.
Warren Geller
President, SCAL Board of Directors
