September 2015 - 3 B R E E Z E Facilities Manager Juan Macias - 702-638-5009 [email protected] T H E Customer Service Coordinator I occasionally have some residents tell me that there is not enough to do, and I hope those who feel likewise will note the statistics I just presented. There are numerous events each month if you want to be actively involved in our community from educational, to entertainment, to physical fitness. That coupled with 40 sanctioned clubs should keep anyone as busy as they want to be. We are extremely fortunate to have a dedicated Activity Director and staff members who want to provide us with a wonderful variety of things to do year round. - Assistant Manager Virginia Marquart - 702-638-5006 [email protected] All of the following numbers are for the 2014-2015 fiscal year: Lynn’s department produced 302 events for an average of 25 per month. The total number of residents who attended these events was 8,408. This number does not reflect those of you who attended events such as, the Advertiser’s Meet and Greet, craft fairs, new resident welcomes, club open houses, flu shots, etc. During that same time period, there were 1,884 fitness classes (157/mo.) which 7,812 of you attended. In addition, a total of 40,379 residents used the exercise equipment for an average of 3,365 per month. We had 1,325 SCAL guests and the library computers were used 4,753 times. Our premier monthly magazine “The ‘Breeze” takes Lynn and her staff about 10 days per month to compile and send off to our layout artist. We have 46 paid advertisers, which allow the publication to be in the black year after year. W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M Activities & Fitness Director Lynn Garlock-Wright - 702-638-5061 [email protected] Last month, I presented some demographic facts regarding our community, and I hope you found them of interest. In continuing my commitment to having an informed community, I present more revealing numbers concerning our Activities and Fitness Department. As you know, Lynn and Trish and their staff members work very hard to provide you with events to attend such as, bus trips, seminars, lunch and learn events and exercise classes. ASSOCIATION NEWS Dear Residents, To paraphrase Mark Twain, “Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I’ve done it thousands of times.” Setting a goal, whether it be to lose weight, earn a promotion or spend more time with your family, is easy — it’s carrying through that proves problematic. W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M - T H E B R E E Z E And yet, the world’s most successful people are intensely goal-orientated. They know what they want, and they focus on achieving it every day. So what’s the difference between a top executive and everybody else? “The fact is that successful people fail far more than unsuccessful people,” says Brian Tracy, a top management consultant, in a recent Q&A with SUCCESS Magazine. “Successful people try more things, fall down, pick themselves up and try again — over and over before they finally win.” So how can you learn to quit giving up on your goals? SUCCESS Magazine offers the following tips for more successful goal-setting: • Write down a list of goals. Cynthia Kersey, author of “Unstoppable: 45 Powerful Stories of Perseverance and Triumph from People Just Like You,” suggests focusing on how you want to be remembered. “List the qualities, deeds and characteristics for which you would like to be remembered by your friends, spouse, children, co-workers, the community and even the world.” • Set out a plan to accomplish your goals. Tracy suggests listing what little steps will take you to your goal, then organizing them by priority and sequence. Figure out how much time and money you will need to accomplish your goals, and revisit and revise your plan accordingly. • Manage your mindset. Keep your focus by surrounding yourself with people who will help you accomplish your goals. Arrange your workspace and home so you’ll be reminded of your commitments. “When you form the habit of starting your productivity earlier in the day, associating with more positive people, managing the news and information you feed your mind, controlling the language you use — especially the ways in which you describe yourself — you will find it easier to succeed,” says Jim Cathcart, professional speaker and founder of the Cathcart Institute Inc. “Become the person who would achieve your goals and who would deserve them.” For more information, visit www.SUCCESS. com. All Aliante residents are encouraged to attend. BOARD MEMBER MESSAGE Dear Residents: President Geller has asked each of the Board members to write an article for “The Breeze” on a periodic basis; he was gracious enough to allow me to be one of the first Board members to participate. Thank you very much, President Geller, for your kindness and thoughtfulness. It has been several years since I have had the opportunity to write an article for “The Breeze” and to directly address our community in writing. I extend a warm and hardy WELCOME to all of our new owners and residents who have made Sun City Aliante their home these past few years and a fond “Hi, what’s new?” to our long time community members. You have all made a very wise decision in moving to SCAL, as we are, in my opinion, the premier community in the Las Vegas Valley. The primary function of the Board of Directors is to: 1. Maintain and enhance our property values; 2. Ensure the quiet use and enjoyment of our common elements by all of our residents and; 3. Ensure that we are fiscally responsible in our finances and that we spend our money wisely. Directors, under Nevada law, are fiduciaries and must always act only in the best interest of the Association. Directors must avoid, at all costs, any improprieties in carrying out their duties and must also avoid any appearance of impropriety. We must always act in the most ethical manner possible and maintain the highest degree of integrity and transparency. I believe that our present Board, and our prior Boards, has succeeded in exemplary fashion in living up to, and exceeding, these goals. SCAL has great amenities; is financially very secure; and has not had an assessment increase in nine years. The true value of our community, however, is the wonderful people who live here and BOARD MEMBER MESSAGE continues on page 5 ASSOCIATION NEWS BOD NOTICE This Notice is distributed according to NRS116.31083. I have been a Board member since November 2006 and have served as President, Vice-President and Secretary. I still get a thrill every time I walk into the clubhouse and look out over the golf course and mountains, and I thank God that I have the good fortune to live here. S C A L N L V . C O M - T H E B R E E Z E It’s September, and that means it’s time to reset your sprinkler clocks for the fall watering months of September, October and November. During these months, you should water three times a week. Check your bill for your watering days or visit www.snwa.com for more information. Are you thinking about replacing or planting a tree? Remember to remove the nursery transport stake and place two large pole tree stakes on either side of the root ball. Drive them into the ground so they are secure. Use non-abrasive “spring-loaded” tree ties to attach the tree to the stakes, alternating sides as you attach them. Using this method and spring-loaded ties will allow the tree trunk to move and grow strong, yet have support when needed. In very windy areas, like Sun City Aliante, you should use three stakes, placing the third stake on the side of the prevailing winds. COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE Would you like to log onto the Sun City Aliante Website? The address is http://www.suncityaliantenlv.com/ login.asp. The Communication Committee will hold a workshop for interested residents on September 10. The Committee will continue to hold monthly workshops on the second Thursday of the month. Come join us on September 10 from 9 a.m. to 11a. m. in the Billard Room and learn more about Sun City Aliante’s website. We look forward to seeing you there. For more information, contact Lynda Towers, chairperson of the Communications Committee, at 702-255-9494 and [email protected]. Being a good neighbor means picking up after our dogs daily and not putting out any seeds or food out for the wildlife. Be safe in your home - Don’t be tempted to leave your garage door open. It’s against the CC&Rs and the North Las Vegas police say that leaving the garage door open or cracked offers easy access for a thief; it’s also a good idea to keep the door between the garage and the house locked at all times. If you plan to do any work on the outside of your home, you will need to submit an application to the Architectural Review Committee (ARC) prior to the meeting (which meets twice a month to review applications). Almost all requests require you to complete a plot plan, which we can provide, and some requests require pictures and samples. If you have questions about your project, you are invited to attend the ARC workshop that is held the Thursday prior to each ARC meeting starting at 8:30 a.m. in the Vista Room; just remember to turn your application and plot plan in prior to the meeting, so we can place it on the agenda. The ARC will meet on September 4 and September 18 at 8:30 a.m. in the Vista Room. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Take care of the ladies in your life; and on behalf of us guys, please take care of yourselves, ladies, so I thought it would be fitting to tell a great story about a wonderful lady from the LPGA. This is my personal favorite story about an LPGA member who comes from my old stomping grounds at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, California. See if you can guess who before the end of the story. ~Paul At The Club: Come and get back in the swing of things and bring a friend. Couples lessons are the price of singles lessons for the whole month of October. It is never too late to start this great game! Email me at [email protected]. Let’s get started. Golf Quote: “The most important shot in golf is the next one.” -Ben Hogan Blood Pressure Checks Friday, September 11, 9 a.m. Donna McCarthur from Centennial Hills Hospital will perform free blood pressure checks on Friday, September 11, from 9 a.m.-10 a.m. in the community center. No advance sign up is necessary, and tests are done on a first-come, first-serve basis. - Beyond the track, there are the practice facilities, vendor grounds, security, “talent contract riders,” tents, roping, officiating, volunteers, and then, the food and beverage... Ay, Yai, Yai. Needless to say, the staff gets very stressed, and everyone working is usually happy when it is all over. One of the wonderful ladies of the LPGA took it upon herself to say, “thank you,” in a grand and glorious manner one morning at Mission Hills Country Club during the 2010 Kraft Nabisco Dinah Shore Tournament. W W W . S C A L N L V . C O M Not many are privy to the amount of work that goes into running a professional event at a golf club. The agronomical scenario on its own is mind blowing. The PGA or LPGA want their own say on course setup and agronomy practices; and often, some of the requests can take a year or two to grow-in or out. This is our club, our community and I’m glad to be a part of it, T H E B R E E Z E The morning staff of about 45 associates showed up on the first day of the ProAm at the crack of dawn to begin what they knew would be a grueling week. They were stunned to find that breakfast was waiting for them in the kitchen. Most people told me that they were amazed and thought that management was responsible. Much to their surprise, they soon realized that their host, chef and server of the wonderful breakfast was Lorena Ochoa. Lorena ate with the staff and thanked them for all they had done and were going to do for the rest of the week. It is no surprise who the country club staff cheers for still today, when she makes a rare golf appearance. Lorena finished a respectable 4th that year at Mission Hills prior to her hiatus from golf, but she left a positive lifetime impression on golf and golf fans. I look forward to seeing you on the practice tee at Aliante Golf Club, and I look forward to helping you improve your skills and your enjoyment of the game. The best place to start your family history journey is with information you already have. Write down what you know about your ancestors, and talk to family members. • Organize your family tree. With sites like Ancestry. 10 - September 2015 com, which houses 8 billion historical records online, a simple online search can help you find family members in historical censuses, military and immigration records and old newspaper articles. Lots of people with experience in family history are happy to offer free advice and help, and who knows, you might even connect with a distant cousin. • For more information to help you begin your family history, visit www.Ancestry.com. We’re running a little late on the actual anniversary date (April 2005) but that’s okay. The Board of Directors decided to wait until after the summer months to bring residents together to celebrate the anniversary of Sun City Aliante’s distinguished active adult community. Join us for a festive celebration on Thursday, October 15 at 7 p.m. in the Vista Ballroom. We’ll begin the evening with a champagne toast and delicious hors d’oeuvres prepared by Bruce Thomas, the head chef at 3100 Grille at the Aliante Golf Course. The entertainment for the evening will be the acclaimed singer Jack Walker performing in concert. - Born and raised in Scotland, Jack Walker remains a favorite with luxury cruise lines throughout the world. Walker is a well-rounded and experienced stage veteran. After moving to Las Vegas, he graced some of Las Vegas’ biggest stages including Mandalay Bay, Venetian, Mystere Theater at Treasure Island and the Mirage. T H E B R E E Z E Walker’s main claim to fame is his voice – and what a voice it is! When asked where he studied, he is quick to admit that he never did – that he’s completely self-taught. Frankly, that’s hard to imagine. There are times he can sound like a crooner. Other times, a rocker (although a mild one). Yet his extraordinary range, tone quality and control stand him as an extraordinary talent on the opera or concert stage. His signature show “Across the Pond” is a collection of musical influences performed in three languages. With a broad repertoire covering music styles including Opera, Contemporary and Classic Pop, Broadway, Adult Contemporary Crossover, Scottish, and Irish favorites all interlaced with anecdotal humor and dry wit. Jack will leave you wondering just what’s coming next. The SCAL Board of Directors encourages all residents to attend this 10-year anniversary celebration. There is no charge for this event. SUN CITY ALIANTE HIGHLIGHTS Million Dollar Quartet FRANKIE MORENO IN CONCERT SCAL residents were ready to rock like it was 1956 again at the Tony® Award Winning musical, Million Dollar Quartet on July 15 at Harrah’s. The performance took audiences back to December 4, 1956, when a twist of fate brought Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley together in one of the most memorable nights in music. Based around that historical event, the musical recounts how the legends ended up in the same room at Sun Records in Memphis for one of the greatest rock ‘n’ roll jam sessions in history. It was a rockin’ good time for SCAL residents and other members of the audience at the Cabaret Jazz at The Smith Center on June 9. They were wowed by Frankie Moreno in Concert as he performed a rendition of original and classic hits and vintage funk- infused sounds. Named “Las Vegas Headliner of the Year” two times running, Moreno frequently brings his special performances to Cabaret Jazz. Our next trip to see Mareno perform is on September 8. W W W . For those who may want to know more about them, Seniors with Warm Hearts is a group of community residents who volunteer their time and efforts to support disadvantaged and abused children and their families at S.A.F.E. House. In addition, they recently added a food drive to help at-risk seniors in the Las Vegas Valley and homeless and at-risk teens. Some of their members recently volunteered at Project 150 for a Back-To-School Teen Shopping Day. Project 150 is a walk-in center for teens in need and the project supplies them with necessities, such as food and clothing and mentoring and assistance through their high school years. In addition to the school supply drive, SWWH also set up a “Holiday Giving Tree” at the SCAL Community Center, where residents may select an ornament tag and fulfill a S.A.F.E. House child’s wish with a toy or a gift. Seniors with Warm Hearts is always looking for more volunteers for these worthy causes. The success of their program depends on warm hearted seniors willing to volunteer to keep the projects moving forward. Their next meeting is October 15 at 11 a.m. For more information, contact Dolores Abbott at 702-406-2222, Carol Hoyt at 702-647-1289 or Karen Nutto at 201-787-9391. VETERANS CLUB Greetings Friends, Neighbors and Fellow Veterans: Summer is almost gone, and it’s time to get back to work. Our veteran’s schedule for the rest of the year is filling up. We have the Fischer House donation program in Don Kaufman’s name at the September 18 meeting. A Fischer House representative will attend the meeting to receive the donation. Friday, October 9, the Activities Department is hosting a “Sock Hop” dance, and we invite everyone to bring socks to donate to the homeless veterans. Saturday, October 10 is the first annual Seniors Assisting Seniors Foundation Golf Tournament (along with our Seniors Assisting Seniors). It will be a great time, and we ask volunteers to help and assist with player sign ups. Please contact Karl Vanderhoe at 702588-0553 to volunteer or to register for the tournament. We will also have a Flag retirement ceremony performed by the Boy Scouts in October (date to be determined). If you attended last year’s ceremony, you won’t want to miss the one this year. Please bring in your old and worn flags. so we can retire them properly. Contact Sy at 702 234-9183 or [email protected] for more info. Our annual Spaghetti dinner will be held on Saturday, November 7. You can purchase your tickets at the SCAL Community Center on Saturday(s) October 17, 14, 21 from 9 a.m. to noon. Our prayers are sent to the families of our dear friends, Don Kaufmann and Jerry Overton, who recently passed. We wish Lil Rothstein and Helen Melnick a speedy recovery from their illness. Thank you for all of your support and remember to pray for our brave men and women serving in far away places. They are indeed our finest, and we wish them a safe return home to their families. Sy Nielson, Chairman Veterans of Sun City Aliante. 26 - September 2015 SCAL SONGSTERS SPOTLIGHT Marta Swart Marta Swart began piano lessons at age three. She could not read music, but she was able to hear a piece and play the correct notes. Seventeen years later she gave up on the piano lessons and switched to voice and general music studies. She grew up as an only child in La Grande, Oregon, where she played in bands and sang in choirs in junior high school, high school and college. She was a music education major at the University of Oregon, and when she graduated, she began teaching vocal music to junior high students in Albany, Oregon. She later worked as music librarian at Willamette University. Marta met her husband, George, through friends. She continued in music education by substituting, while raising her two daughters. Her husband was in educational administration, but they never worked in the same school district. For 22 years, she taught elementary music in Portland, Oregon. Marta and George retired and began spending winters in Yuma, Arizona. They liked Yuma so much that they built a home there and moved there permanently in 2001. There she was active in leading the choir in her community, singing in church choir and playing in weekly jam sessions. She said she learned a lot about country music at the jam sessions, although classical music is her favorite. Besides the piano, she also plays flute and oboe. In her retirement, she enjoys quilting and crocheting, and she and George enjoy genealogy. The Swarts moved to Sun City Aliante in 2011 to be closer to her two daughters. One is a nurse; the other is a teacher. She also has three granddaughters who all live close by. She joined the Sun City Aliante Songsters and is able to sing with the altos, the second sopranos, fill-in as occasional director, warm-up coach and a back-up piano player, filling in where needed. She is also a part of the Aliante Treble Makers (ATMs). She says she really enjoys the variety of music the Songsters sing as well as the variety of parts she gets to play and sing. “It keeps me thinking,” claims Marta. The Songsters are lucky to have this talented lady as a part of their group.
