Resume Writing 101
A resume provides a snapshot of your relevant academic background, experiences, and skills to a potential
employer. You may create several resumes to speak to positions in different industries. Make sure your resumes
are one page, have consistent formatting, and are meticulously proofread.
Anatomy of a Resume
Providing key information in a clear and concise way ensures the employer gets a clear, inside look into your
academic and professional background. Important sections to incorporate into a resume include:
NAME, ADDRESS(ES), PHONE NUMBERS, E-MAIL ADDRESS
 Permanent and/or campus address, Penn email, and best phone number to be reached
 LinkedIn profile url and Skype name are optional items for inclusion
EDUCATION
 Institution name/location, degree/intended major, and graduation date, and GPA (if above a 3.0).
Include GPA exactly as it appears in Penn InTouch; if it is a 3.29, do not put 3.3
 SAT scores, reportedly individually (ex: SAT: M – 780, CR – 740, W – 790), are only appropriate to
include for financial services or consulting positions
 Relevant coursework that speak to a particular position (list class names not course numbers)
HONORS, AWARDS, AND ACTIVITIES
 High level awards such as Phi Beta Kappa and Dean’s List
 High school honors should be removed after sophomore year to focus on college information
EXPERIENCE
 Professional, volunteer, or projects that prepare you for positions of interest. Includes organization
name/location, and position title/dates in the role
 Bulleted descriptions with buzz words from the job description to explain your work. Start bullets out with
a strong action verb, and have quantified information and demonstr ate results/impact of your work
SKILLS AND INTERESTS
 Hard skills such as computer and language
 Interests, be specific (i.e.: Reading 20th Century American Literature)
Keep in Mind

Employers take 6-10 seconds to review resumes. Make yours as “skimmable” as possible. Use bold,
italics, and underlining to draw attention to important parts of the resume.

Information on your resume should be up-to-date, accurate, and honestly represented.

Career Services is here to help. Stop in for walk-ins to have your resume reviewed.
