Presenting the Macfarlane Regatta Trophy to OCC Canoe Racing Chair Jen Bossert (right) are Macfarlane family members Mary Philpotts-McGrath, Marian and Maree Miller, Walter Guild, and Alice Guild. Board members Bob Dewitz, Wendell Brooks, Gregg Robertson, Stephany Sofos, Vik Watumull, Alan Lau, Barbara Stehouwer and Jon Bryan joined Walter Guild in the pep rally in the Bar before the regatta. Paddlers Sizzle for a Macfarlane 4th of July to Remember If there was ever a 4th of July to remember, this year's was it. The day was a perfect 10 from dawn when paddlers gathered at the Club for breakfast and a pep rally, to the Club's amazing performance at the M acfarlane Regatta in Waikiki, and finally to the Club BBQ and fireworks in the evening. Does Outrigger know how to celebrate or what? The surf may have been flat, with occasional bumps, but it didn't matter. Outrigger won 15 of the 64th Annual Macfarlane Regatta's 39 events, to amass 112 points by day's end. Jr. 'Riggers won the Junior Trophy for most points in the kids races, and the upper division and masters paddlers were as hot as firecrackers. OCC is the only club to score more than 100 points in a Macfarlane Regatta. This year's 11 2 points ties the Club's winning total in 1987. Other 100+ years were 1995 (111 points) and 1985 (1 04 points). Lanikai and Kailua, w ho have traded regatta wins this season, finished second with 84 points, and third with 74 points, respectively. Outrigger's dedication to technique and conditioning came into play in the Women's 40 event. OCC's women were well ahead in their one-mile race and crossed the finish line first, only to learn that they would have to race again because the half-mile flags had been cut by a passing boat during the race and the boats had to turn on air. Page 2 OCC President Barbara Stehouwer welcomed paddlers to the regatta. Race officials ran the Men's 40 race (which OCC also won), and then the women took to the course a second time. In totally flat conditions, Outrigger powered its way for another mile, and won by nearly 20 seconds. Tired but happy the ladies gathered on the patio at Duke's to receive the perpetual trophy for the race and a glass of champagne. The Macfarlane victory goes to all of OCC's paddlers. The Club scored points in all but three events it entered during the day. As Walter Guild said at the pep rally before the race, "Every point counts toward bringing home the wave trophy." And we did it in a big way. Mahalo to Siana and Anthony Hunt who coordinated this year's Macfarlane Regatta . They initiated some changes this year: new emcees Billy Philpotts and Rocky Higgins; a return of all perpetual trophies to the beach to award to winners; and the rental of the Hula Grill at the Outrigger Hotel for members to watch the races, eat and second-g uess the steersmen and officials. As members know, the two regattas that Outrigger wants to win each year are the Macfarlane and the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Championsh ips (states). The HCRA championships are scheduled for Saturday, August 5 at Keehi Lagoon. Come on down and cheer your Club on. August 2006 Winning the Men 40 race were Karl Heyer IV, Bruce Black, Marc Haine, Robby Harrison, Walter Guild, steersman Jim Beaton. / Regatta emcee Billy Philpotts interviews Molly McMahon after the Girls 16s won their race. Outrigger won the Junior Trophy for scoring the most points in the kids' races. Kids' coaches accepting the award are Tiare Finney, Lindsey Wessberg, Jim Beaton, Keoni Kino and Genie Kincaid. The Bradley fami ly gathered for the regatta: Brendan, Emma, Todd, George, Scott, Katherine, Richard and June.
