LEFT: Girls 16s: Steersman Billy Balding, Sophia Varady, Rachel Suppa, He· lena Schaefer, Kim Hee Wong, Allie Whiting There wasn't much surf on the 4th of July at Waikiki Beach but it didn't stop thousands of canoe paddlers from the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association from enjoying the 69th Annual Walter J. Madarlane Regatta. Lanikai Canoe Club amassed 102 points, despite host Outrigger winning 11 events, t o w in the regatta. OCC was second with 75 points. Occasional bumps provided steersmen w ith a challenge in the water, but most races required a lot of sweat to make it across the finish line. The 4th dawned sunny and bright as paddlers strolled into the Club for breakfast. The annual pep rally followed in the Ka Moi Lounge. And then it was off to Waikiki fo r a day of canoe racing. At the end of the day Lanikai's men and women drank champagne from the silver trophies for their wins in the Senior events. Back at the Club, hundreds of members and their guests barbecued, danced and enjoyed an evening of food, drink, camaraderie and fireworks. Next for paddlers is the Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association Championships on Maui on Saturday, August 6. . ... 1 BELOW: Club President Greg Moss, center, checks on the Madarlane regatta action with Karl Heyer IV and Billy Balding. , .
