Kek Lok Si Temple, Penang, Malaysia E xclusively for cunard world club members YEARS OF ICONIC CUNARDERS Head of Cunard Marketing, Richard Curtis, receiving Ultra Travel Award for 'Best Cruise Line' On 4 July this year, we reached our latest milestone, marking 170 years to the day since Britannia set off from Liverpool on our first ever Transatlantic Crossing. Over the intervening years, over 200 ships have graced our history. And when we say ‘history’, we don’t simply mean our story. After all, Cunard ships were maritime innovators and have played a crucial role in momentous events ever since 1840, including global conflicts and the great emigration to the New World. PROUD TO BE NAMED THE BEST On 10 May 2010, during a star-studded ceremony at London’s Dorchester Hotel, we once again received the accolade ‘Best Cruise Line’ at the Ultratravel Awards, which recognise the finest names in luxury travel. China We are especially delighted because this is an acknowledgement from you, our guests. The discerning readers of The Daily Telegraph and Ultratravel magazine have now named us Best Cruise Line every year since the awards were introduced four years ago. 2 Franconia WINNER Ranked Number 1 in 2009 Berlitz Guide 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010 In 1840, we became the first company to take passengers on regularly scheduled transatlantic departures; today, once again, we alone offer this service. The 115 first class guests on the paddle steamer, Britannia, would scarcely believe the rate at which our ships would evolve; as soon as 1862, China became the first Cunard liner to use the modern, economical screw propellers. Transatlantic travellers would only have to wait until the arrival of Bothnia (1876) for the novelty of a library at sea, of Servia (1881) for the unprecedented luxury of electric lighting, or of Campania and Lucania (1893) for proper refrigeration on board. From 1901, guests on this latter pair could also read a daily newspaper mid-Atlantic or check stock prices thanks to Marconi’s invention of the wireless telegraph. And still the changes kept on coming. Carmania (1905) became “The 115 first class guests on the paddle Servia CONTENTS steamer, Britannia, would scarcely believe 170 Years of Iconic Cunarders 2-3 The World Awaits Queen Elizabeth 4-7 Epic Voyages, Enduring Memories 8-9 Distant Delights the first ship with steam turbine engines; Franconia introduced a gymnasium and health centre in 1911; before Laconia completed a maiden circumnavigation of the world in 1922. During the Crimean War of 1853-1856, Arabia played a behind-the-scenes role in the Charge of the Light Brigade, transporting 7,500 cavalry horses – many used in that ill-fated offensive – in canvas hammocks on her decks! When the Titanic met disaster on 14 April 1912, Carpathia happened to be the closest ship and rescued all 706 survivors, taking them along with their lifeboats on to New York. Famed Cunarders contributed to the Allied effort in both World Wars. Serving as a seaplane carrier in April 1915, Lucania made naval history as the first ship to launch an aircraft while underway. Lusitania, still a passenger ship, was tragically torpedoed by a U-Boat off the Irish coast in 1915; the huge loss of life hurried the United States into the conflict. Many others served tirelessly as troop carriers, such as Mauretania, whose speed allowed her to outrun U-Boats as she transported a total of around 130,000 servicemen. During the Second World War, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary ferried tens of thousands of troops as far as North America and even Sydney; Queen Mary even carried Winston Churchill four times across the Atlantic; indeed he estimated that the efforts of great Cunard liners shortened the war by an entire year. Most recently, of course, QE2 was requisitioned as a troop carrier during the Falklands conflict. She remains the only ship ever to have clocked up a staggering 5 million nautical miles; the most arduous of these came as she headed south through icefields in late May 1982, under electronic blackout to avoid detection. Captain Peter Jackson later wrote that he had never known “such a harrowing experience”. Of course, three Cunard Queens have already started writing the next 170 years of our story, and you’re always invited to be part of it! Back Cover most Lucania, Bay of Naples QE2 liners in the world THE Cunarder THE Cunarder To us, this reflects and rewards the efforts of all our dedicated teams on board who are the secret behind the famous White Star Service that distinguishes our voyages. Sublime relaxation, superlative dining and sparkling entertainment are surely close to the top of this list. Needless to say, our latest Queen will deliver all three with panache, flair and imagination. BON APPÉTIT 4 With our Global Culinary Ambassador, Chef Zimmermann, at the helm of Queen Elizabeth’s restaurants, consistent excellence is assured. After all, the Strasbourg-born chef has garnered numerous accolades on land, including a coveted Michelin Star, before transferring his immense talents to sea. The creative force behind the menus in Queen Elizabeth’s three main restaurants, Chef Zimmermann also delights the palate with these alternative offerings, inspired both by his homeland and by the exotic destinations he has encountered during Cunard voyages. Delicious choice in the Lido Each evening, the Lido restaurant offers informal buffet dining as it does during the day. What’s more, part of it also transforms into one of these tempting dining venues with table service: Asado Discover the true essence of South American cuisine, with hearty meat dishes cooked on an open fire or grill, such as Chimmichuri chicken and Argentinean lamb chops. A Slice of Saturday Night is the largest production show Cunard has ever staged. This popular nostalgic pastiche of 1960s music, which has toured extensively throughout the UK and US, has now been adapted especially by its original writers for Queen Elizabeth’s discerning guests. The Piccadilly Line explores the spoken word, song and prose as characters get on and off a train journey on the London Underground, with all the action set in the shell of a tube train carriage. Hotel Royale is a musical production featuring 16 singers and dancers who whimsically bring to life the story of a hotel’s faded glory – once the playground of the rich and famous, it is now home to some quirky staff and unusual guests. Sing is a dynamic production based on the popularity of ‘Singers in Concert’ performed on Queen Mary 2 and Queen Victoria. Featuring 21 live musicians and four singers, the show’s influences are drawn from contemporary musical theatre, pop and classic songs which will be very familiar to the audience. Abridged plays shall continue to delight and entertain, and Queen Elizabeth’s guests can anticipate classics such as Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. A Neil Simon triple bill is also scheduled which combines three scenes, one each from ‘Last of the Red Hot Lovers’, ‘Plaza Suite’ and ‘The Odd Couple’ – all linked by their apartment or hotel suite setting. What’s more, after each show, the audience is invited to take part in an informal Q&A session with the actors. 5 Queen Elizabeth continues our hugely popular and rewarding Cunard Insights enrichment programme which introduces guests to stimulating experts and accomplished academics. New for Queen Elizabeth will be the introduction of Professional Insights, a series of expert workshops where guests can learn all the secrets behind occupations as diverse as auctioneering, performance poetry or weather forecasting. Queen Elizabeth’s guests will also be able to participate in a specially written panel quiz show that will offer an afternoon of friendly banter. A GRAND LINLEY CENTREPIECE FOR THE GRAND LOBBY Having stepped aboard at least one magnificent Cunard ship, you’ll understand the striking impression created by a soaring Grand Lobby. So when it came to putting the final touches to the splendid space which shall grace Queen Elizabeth, we decided something special was required to do it justice. The result, as Cunard’s President and Managing Director, Peter Shanks, explained was “to commission a 5.6 metre high marquetry panel depicting the original Queen Elizabeth, an Art Deco icon, using a variety of natural woods from around the world.” And who better than Linley, a company specialising in such detailed craftsmanship, to design and produce this fabulous piece. Using seven types of wood – Madrona, Indian ebony, American walnut, grey ripple sycamore, burr ash, bird’s eye maple, satin The most Queen Elizabeth’s Clarendon on Cunard brings together original paintings and limited edition prints in an enviable collection of striking, contemporary art. Spanning a range of styles and genres, the gallery shall include works by internationally acclaimed artists, such as Rolf Harris, Sherree Valentine Daines and Fabian Perez. And should you set eyes on a piece you simply must have, you’ll be delighted to know that many are available to buy as well as to view. walnut and Macassar ebony – Linley has created a truly evocative image of the classic liner’s port bow from a sea level perspective. The stunning result, shown here, stands the height of two-and-a-half decks and was unveiled on 19 May in London. Launching Clarendon Fine Art on Queen Elizabeth is Sherree Valentine Daines. During her impressive career, Sherree has become one of the UK's most collectable contemporary artists and enjoys an unrivalled international reputation. Her impressionistic approach lends a unique charm to each stunning, figurative composition, her subtle hand blending each detail into a creation of captivating elegance. Those aboard Queen Elizabeth’s Maiden Voyage will have the opportunity to meet Sherree at the gallery – and perhaps even glimpse this talented artist at work. Linley’s Chairman, Viscount David Linley, who founded the company in 1985, said: “Though we have made fittings for luxury yachts in the past, this is the first sea-going work we have done on this scale – but it was a commission I was delighted to accept. I recall my father saying the interior design on Cunard’s QE2 made one proud to be British, so I am hoping our achievement on the new Queen Elizabeth will make him – and others – equally proud.” We’re sure you’ll consider it a fitting welcome to this majestic ship. famous Peter Shanks & Viscount Linley ocean liners in the world The gallery has also placed a number of notable pieces for display around our beautiful new ship, and the crown jewel among these is the renowned portrait of Her Majesty The Queen by Rolf Harris to commemorate our monarch’s 80th birthday. Coincidentally, the much-loved Australian artist is actually celebrating his own 80th birthday this year, and Clarendon on Cunard will be featuring ‘A Life in Art’ exhibition to applaud Rolf’s unique contribution to the world of art for over half a century. You may remember hearing about our competition – in conjunction with The Daily Telegraph – in last autumn’s edition of The Cunarder, to produce an original Art Deco-inspired sculpture for Queen Elizabeth. We had a fantastic response and the judges – who included Royal Academy Director, Charles Saumarez Smith, Telegraph Arts Editor, Sarah Crompton, and Cunard’s President and Managing Director, Peter Shanks – faced the tricky decision of whittling an impressive 143 entries down to just 20. It was left to January’s Telegraph Review readers to make the final decisions, and they chose the entry from 20-year-old sculpture student, Peter Simpson, as the winner. Peter’s creative process had intrigued the judges, as the young man from Edinburgh was apparently inspired after watching a documentary on lighthouse lenses, and he spent two months combining elements of this design with sea shell details to create his elegant piece, defined by its smooth, flowing lines. It is now up to our design team to bring Peter’s design to life, and the artist himself will be there to see the result when Queen Elizabeth arrives in Southampton this October. For the time being, congratulations Peter, and we wish you continued success. THE Cunarder THE Cunarder CLARENDON ON C UNARD A WINNING ADDITION E PIC VOYAGES, ENDURING MEMORIES SYDNEY, 7-8 MARCH Every Cunard World Voyage is a momentous event, illuminated by so many exciting highlights that it’s simply impossible to relate them all. Here are just a few of the wonderful memories from two global odysseys in the early months of 2010, including news of a very special guest. SYDNEY, 19 FEBRUARY MELBOURNE, 22 FEBRUARY Like so many illustrious Cunarders, Queen Victoria is famed for her red and black livery. Yet berthed at Sydney’s Circular Quay as dusk fell, she was transformed, bathed in an eye-catching pink glow. 8 Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, explained, “Pink has become synonymous with the fight against breast cancer so I was delighted to offer NBCF the opportunity to boost awareness of research.” What’s more, her position beside the city’s most famous landmarks ensured that thousands would see this colourful gesture. “Queen Victoria always attracts attention when she visits Australia,” continued Ms Sherry, “but this year she’ll also be turning heads for charity”. Guests arrived to a lively welcome performance by Aboriginal dancers and the uniquely Australian sound of the didgeridoo, before meeting Cunard’s President and Managing Director, Peter Shanks, Queen Victoria’s Captain Paul Wright and Hotel Manager Jacqui Hodgson on the red carpet. Once everyone was seated at their tables, the amazing voices of the Australian Boys Choir filled the venue, enrapturing their 500-strong audience with interpretations of familiar numbers. Then it was time for the elegant dinner and dancing which rounded off the evening in unforgettable style. As has also become custom after such events, we subsequently delivered the incredible floral arrangements from the venue, including more than 4,000 roses, to cancer units in the region. The most famous ocean liners in the world None who were present at his talk and Q&A session in the Royal Court Theatre will ever forget his words, frequently moving, often funny and always inspirational. After recollections on the days of apartheid, it was easy to understand the euphoria of February 1990 and the release of Nelson Mandela after 27 years – “Wonder of wonders, we kept pinching ourselves to make sure we were not dreaming”. The changes set in motion culminated on 27 April 1994, “a magical day – a day like no other when all races of South Africa voted in the first democratic election”. He concluded by speaking of a bright future for his home country; when he fell quiet the silent awe of the audience soon erupted into a standing ovation. Queen Mary 2’s berth at Sydney’s Garden Island also resulted in an encounter with Captain Jack Aubrey from 2003 film, ‘Master and Commander’, or rather the actor who portrayed this historic naval officer – Russell Crowe. Virtually overlooking the Crowe residence, Captain Bates made the neighbourly gesture of asking the whole family aboard for a full tour, an invitation they duly accepted. 9 MAURITIUS TO CAPE TOWN, 20-25 MARCH As Queen Mary 2 completed her westward course across the Indian Ocean, it was an absolute honour and privilege for us to welcome aboard The Most Reverend Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and his wife between Port Louis and a maiden call in Cape Town. Friendly and charming, the Nobel Peace Prize winner was also tireless during his stay. Fresh from attending our weekly Cunard Interdenominational Church Sunday service, Archbishop Tutu joined Captain Bates for a tour of the bridge, where he sounded the ship’s whistle, delighted the crew with his wonderful sense of humour and kindly signed the Visitor’s Book. Archbishop Tutu still found time for a sparkling interview with Entertainment Director Ray Rouse – for which he set a lighthearted tone with his assertion that, wearing his microphone, “I look like Madonna” – and also unveiled a plaque to commemorate his acquaintance with our flagship. Finally, the great man joined 700 guests at our annual World Voyage Dinner at the beautiful Vergelegen Wine Estate, built in the early 1700s, where traditional dancers welcomed guests amidst grand lawns, fragrant jasmine and giant camphor trees. Here, within a vast marquee, Archbishop Tutu delivered a characteristically moving grace, before local delicacies were served beneath the chandeliers, accompanied by the estate’s superb wines. Before long, and perhaps inspired by the fabulous displays of South African music and dance, our guests twirled around the floor to the rhythms of a Big Band. THE Cunarder THE Cunarder The vibrant illumination was all in aid of a worthy cause: to support Australia’s National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) at the official declaration of its $17m fundraising target for 2010 during a launch reception on Queen Victoria’s aft deck. An important and much-loved aspect of any Cunard World Voyage is the glittering evening to which we invite all guests who follow its entire route. This year, the event took place in Melbourne, inside the spectacular Grand Hall of the National Gallery of Victoria, beneath the bold colours that grace its stunning stained glass ceiling. Every arrival into Sydney is dramatic, not least for those aboard our flagship. After all, as she made stately progress into the famous harbour, an armada of yachts, pleasure boats and water taxis had flocked to escort her while helicopters buzzed overhead and several guests responded by unfurling Australian flags from their balconies. D istant H ts ELIGHTSES You could spend all your winter days wrapped up warm at home. However, we prefer to explore parts of the world draped in luminous colours, illuminating customs and extraordinary sun-kissed scenery. A R O YA L C E L E B R A T I O N ABOARD A CUNARD QUEEN 12 Following the tour, Her Royal Highness unveiled a plaque to commemorate the visit, before an illuminating presentation in the Royal Court Theatre, where Commodore Warner made a speech welcoming everyone to Queen Mary 2, praising the work of the Mission to Seafarers and speaking of its close association with Cunard over the years. Finally, the royal party headed for the Queens Room, and Her Royal Highness met specially invited guests at a champagne reception, before departing for further engagements. It was a truly wonderful day and we were honoured that Her Royal Highness was able to join us on board. THE JOY OF JUILLIARD You may remember reading in the last edition of the Cunarder that talented jazz players from the acclaimed Juilliard School for performing arts in New York would be casting their own musical spell on Queen Mary 2’s eastbound crossings during 2010. Well, the performances have certainly lived up to their billing, as during the first of these departures, leaving New York on 15 April, a dazzling quintet wowed audiences with fantastic performances in the Chart Room and at a matinee in the Royal Court Theatre; they even put on a show in the Officers’ Wardroom. The most The next instalment came during our flagship’s 21 May crossing, the President’s Voyage (see page 16). Jazz guitarist Rodney Jones enraptured the theatre audience for an entire spellbinding hour, as you might expect of a talent who has played with the likes of Stevie Wonder and James Brown, and who George Benson described as ‘a legend among musicians, especially guitarists’. Rodney also found time for a Q&A session before his final piece; one question was ‘Who do you think is the best rock guitarist?’ Just for the records, his answer was: Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix. ocean liners The 10-night celebration included a very special visit to Liverpool, from where on Independence Day 1840, Britannia had departed on Cunard’s first ever-voyage all those years ago. Having touched shore briefly in Cherbourg, Queen Victoria made her entrance into Cobh, the port for Cork, on 24 July. The welcome was fantastically warm and friendly, with a free concert performed by Cobh’s Big Band alongside an array of stalls selling arts, crafts and food. This was also an occasion for remembrance, as Captain Paul Wright and Dermot O’Mahoney, Chairman of the Port of Cork, laid wreaths at the Lusitania Peace Memorial to honour those who had lost their lives 95 years before. Another maiden call followed in Dublin, before a truly memorable first visit to Liverpool. Despite the drizzle and gloom, hundreds of people gathered at Pier Head to watch her stately entrance, underlining Peter Shanks’s observation that “The Cunard heritage is so strong in this city as it is the company’s spiritual home”. Indeed this was the port from which Britannia set off on the very first Cunard transatlantic crossing, a little over 170 years ago. It was a landmark celebrated in regal style. 13 HRH The Duchess of Cornwall returned to Queen Victoria for the first time since naming her in 2007. Greeted at the quayside by a dozen members of the Liverpool Ukulele Orchestra playing hits by The Beatles and welcomed aboard by Captain Wright, Her Royal Highness met a number of crew members before unveiling a plaque in the Grand Lobby to commemorate our long history; as she did so, Queen Victoria’s assembled cooks, stewards, officers and service personnel, all in crisp uniforms, gave three cheers for their ship’s godmother. The Duchess still found time to sound the midday whistle – even if it was a little late – and cut a special birthday cake before it was time for her to depart. Peter Shanks summed up the mood perfectly: “Cunard is honoured that Her Royal Highness named this fine ship, and delighted that she continues to display such an interest both in the ship and in the crew. The Duchess will always be warmly welcomed on board”. “Cunard is honoured that Juilliard Jazz & Queen Mary 2 Her Royal Highness named this fine ship, and delighted that she continues to display such an Members of the Juilliard School will also be aboard our 12 September and 12 October eastbound Transatlantic Crossings. For those who have either missed out or can’t wait for an encore, we hope to extend the partnership into 2011. famous to home interest both in the ship and in the crew” in the world THE Cunarder THE Cunarder On Friday 25 June, we enjoyed an incredibly proud moment as Queen Mary 2 played host to a celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the Mission to Seafarers in Southampton. Indeed it was a royal occasion, as the guest of honour was HRH The Princess Royal, patron and staunch supporter of the Mission’s work. Waiting to greet Her Royal Highness were Peter Shanks, Commodore Bernard Warner and the ship’s senior officers along with prominent members of the Mission to Seafarers. As Commodore Warner escorted The Princess Royal on a tour of Cunard’s flagship, Her Royal Highness showed a keen interest, comparing the various elements of Queen Mary 2 to her own experiences from her association with the Royal Navy. C lose Other highlights of the day included a fabulous concert in the Royal Court Theatre, with performances by Jon Christos, Natasha Marsh and the 65-piece Halle Orchestra, conducted by Anthony Inglis. This talented line-up regaled guests with favourites such as Rule Britannia and, fittingly, You’ll Never Walk Alone, before a stirring finale of Land of Hope and Glory, enthusiastically accompanied by flag-waving guests. And as Queen Victoria slipped away from Liverpool late that evening, fireworks burst joyfully in the night sky, as a Beatles tribute band played on the Lido Deck. The next day, Queen Victoria introduced herself to Belfast, where the city’s Lord Mayor, Pat Convery, greeted her arrival and an exchange of plaques – customary during maiden visits – took place. Up ahead, more first-time acquaintances followed, as Queen Victoria sailed along the Clyde to Greenock and, two days later, visited South Queensferry for Edinburgh, before returning home to Southampton. H Twinings Teas to Suit Every Taste oning our ALLMARKS So many aspects of life aboard our ships contribute to the unique Cunard Experience. As has become an annual Cunard tradition, we have again recently held a popular ‘President’s Voyage’. This year, Cunard’s President and Managing Director, Peter Shanks, joined a seven-night eastbound Transatlantic Crossing aboard Queen Mary 2, to host numerous events and the Captain’s Table in the Britannia Restaurant. One of Peter’s first tasks was to meet the 40 new recruits at the White Star Training Academy, part of their week-long introduction to White Star Service. Commodore Warner and other senior officers came down to greet the new recruits and also handed out certificates at a graduation ceremony towards the end of the voyage. Room had crossed to Halifax on Queen Mary in 1946 as a two-year-old for a first meeting with their father after the war. Another lady worked on Queen Mary as a telephonist in 1955, where she met her late husband, the Chief Electrical Engineer; fifty-five years later she was travelling with their daughter on “this very special trip with so many memories”. We’d like to thank all who shared their moving stories. STARS F THE M NTH As you well know, the service on board our ships is a vital ingredient of the unique Cunard Experience. So every month we reward a crew member aboard each of our ships who has made an outstanding contribution to enhancing our exceptional hospitality. It gives us great pleasure, then, to announce our winners for May 2010. An undoubted highlight of the crossing was the Last Night of the Cunard Proms. Conductor Anthony Inglis and his 26-piece National Symphony Orchestra had already entertained guests at an American Evening, whose highlight was Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’. For the final night, it was a good old-fashioned Proms occasion, featuring a 60-strong choir made up of enthusiastic guests – and Peter gamely joined in too. 16 Peter and Mr Lewis joined a reunion for those who travelled on the original Queen Mary. One of the 15 guests in the Board The orchestra played some wonderfully atmospheric pieces including ‘The Dambusters March’ and Elgar’s ‘Nimrod’, while the choir performed admirably. Then it was time for the flag-waving finale, as ‘Rule Britannia’, ‘Jerusalem’ and ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ resounded around this stunning venue. Three encores tell you just how popular it was – a fitting end to a truly memorable week. Noli tells us he loves spending his well-earned holiday time with his family – especially as he’s the proud father of three children. Well done, Noli! He has served aboard Queen Mary 2 for five years now, during which time he has impressed with his loyalty, enthusiasm, passion and unwavering support for all his colleagues. Victor certainly exceeds all expectations, as shown by an overwhelming number of nominations from the crew. Mount Teide, Tenerife Queen Mary 2 Victor Mandawe, (Galley No.1) an extraordinary gentleman who was about to celebrate his 100th birthday. O ne of six children, Mr. Daniel Bowden was born in Melbourne and now resides in Bateau Bay near Sydney. Dan (as he likes to be known) began a 25-year career in the Australian Navy as a Wireless Operator at the tender age of 15. He later served in the Second World War on a minesweeper in the Middle East, before becoming a Telegraphist Air Gunner, flying ‘Seagulls’ and ‘War Horses’, and receiving one of only six MBEs awarded to non commissioned officers. Sadly, Mr Bowden’s wife died in 1985, but he cherishes the moments with her and enjoys spending time with his son, two grand children and his great grand children aged six and three. On the day itself, Captain Rynd invited Mr. Bowden to the Bridge to sound the ship’s noon whistle. That evening, Hotel Manager Jacqui Hodgson invited Mr. Bowden to a special table in the Britannia Restaurant, where he was presented with a cake and a photo of the evening, as well as a message of congratulations from his friend Commander Ken Burnett, which had been sent to the ship. What’s more, not only did Dan receive a stirring rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ and ‘For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow’ but, to reflect his Australian roots, we couldn’t resist a chorus of ‘Waltzing Matilda’ too! Amazingly, this was Dan’s first Cunard voyage, and he declared that the whole celebration had been beyond his expectations. It was our pleasure, Dan! THE Cunarder THE Cunarder There were also presentations for longer ‘service’ at a resplendent Cunard World Club Cocktail Party in the Queens Room – where a thousand guests shone in black tie and beautiful dresses – during which Peter took the opportunity to dicuss our most loyal travellers. In particular, he was delighted to present a Cunard book to a gentleman named George Lewis, who had stepped aboard many Cunard liners, including Queen Elizabeth and QE2, and was now in his 101st year! Three rehearsals later, it was time for two rousing shows in a packed Royal Court Theatre. Commodore Warner took the baton to conduct under the guidance of Anthony Inglis, and the pair even exchanged jackets! Peter also conducted the orchestra, and here is a photograph to prove it. 17 C UNARD GOES GOLD T HE P RINCE ’ S T RUST FOR An Evening at Swan Lake Together with you, our generous guests, we have now raised more than £500,000 for The Prince’s Trust. For some of our Cunard World Club members, a simple Yet there is plenty more work still to do. Indeed, around one in five young people in the UK are currently not in work, education or training. Rising unemployment has made escaping this situation even harder, as the most disadvantaged young people must compete for fewer and fewer opportunities against increasingly skilled applicants. This is why we have made a long-term commitment by becoming a Gold Patron of The Prince’s Trust, joining an exclusive band of their most dedicated supporters. We have committed to raising a further £500,000 for the charity over the next three years, thereby passing the £1million fundraising mark to benefit many more young people like Jemma.
