The 2000 Homecoming dance was once again held at
the Y.M.C.A. This year's theme was Disney Fairy Tales. The
dance music was provided by "All Hit 98.9" and lasted from
8:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. After the dance there was a lock-in
where the kids had their choice of swimming, bowling, playing
games, or watching movies. All in all, it was a magical evening.

season with a record of 9-10. The
team tied for fourth in the

The team consisted
of 17 hard working girls who
improved throughout the season.

will be a great addition to next

with a record of 14-15-1. They had their ups and downs, but
the season ended on a positive note. The team played their
best volleyball of the year in a match against St. Bede in the
semifinals at the Alwood Regional. It was a hard fought
match against the number one seed, but St. Bede proved too
much for the Geese, falling 15-8 16-14- The team finished
with a record of 7-4 in the Lincoln Trail Conference, good
enough for a fourth place finish. Sarah Sagmoen was awarded
Captain's Award, Highest Serve Percentage, Second Team

was a great one for freshsoph football. After losing
their first game to
Westmer, the Geese
banded together and never
looked back. The year was
dominated by team spirit.
There were shaved heads,
a no huddle offense, and
even a blackout in the

team would not be
defeated again, showing its

greatest challenge of the

The Fresh-Soph girls ended the season with an overall record
of 11 -9. A record of 9-2 in the conference left them tied with Alexis
and Annawan for second place. The sophomores led the way in both
scoring and rebounding. Maggie Tumbleson led in scoring with an
average of ten points per game. Amanda Hilderbrand led in
rebounding with an average of six rebounds per game. They placed
fourth in their own tournament in December with a one point loss to
Princeton. The freshmen placed second in the Princeton Tournament in February. With determination and dedication to the game,
these girls will see improvement and success in their basketball game
in the future.

The fresh-soph basketball
team rose to face great challenges in
the 2000/2001 season. Although
talented, they began the season with
no returning starters and little high
school game experience. These
factors contributed to a bit of a slow
start, but the Geese worked hard,
learned quickly and gelled as a team.
That work paid off with a winning
season, a 9-2 record in the LTC and
a firm foundation for the years
ahead.

The 2000-2001 Flying Geese season ended with a 14-14 record. It was an exciting
schedule facing four state-ranked teams. They also beat crosstown rival Kewanee 65-56.
The record doesn't show the achievement of what the Geese had to go through. Six of
their losses were to regional winners. The Flying Geese were tied with Stark County for
third in the conference race and also beat Alwood who was sitting at the top of the
conference. They placed fourth in the conference tourney. To end the season, they lost
in the first round of the Regional to ROWVA. The captains of the team were Scott

6om With the Wind
Three firsts, four
seconds, one third, and a
fourth, but what a fourth it
was! Consider the beauty of
flight, the power of an
elevated lift, and the lunge of
a body for the tape at the
finish line. The Lady Geese
experienced all of these and
more. Our early meets didn't
indicate the success we would
experience as a team later in
the season.
We faced our
first true challenge at the
Dunlap Relays and finished
3rd. At Riverdale we faced the
host school and Millegeville
and finished 2nd. The pieces
had begun to fall into place.
We won the F/S LTC over
Annawan, and the Varsity
LTC over Union, but it came
down to the final event. Seven
Varsity LTC titles in a row!
The Eureka
sectional was considered one
of the top two sectionals in
Classs A track. We finished
2nd. All of our state qualifiers
had been there before, they
remembered, and found it
within their hearts, to surpass
all the expectations of their
coach, their parents and their
classmates. We will remember
the 117'6" discus throw of
Katrina Reed at state. And
when the final gun had
sounded, the Lady Geese had
finished 4th at the Class A
track and field meet with 31
points at Eastern Illinois
University.
We will cherish
the memories of the three-peat
perf ormance of Chelsea
Humphrey in the 100 meter
high hurdles in record time
which electrified the crowd, or
the starting power of Brenda
Herrera in the relays. The
baton exchanging abilities of
Angel Dearing and Chelsea
Humphrey propelled the team
to the heart of the relays. We
can't forget the final legs of
exchange with speedster Kelli
Charlet and the endurance of
Kim Fargher. The 2001 track
season was truly a season of
individual and unselfish team
effort, not soon to be
forgotten.

With a combination of responsibility and
leadership, this year's student council was a great
success. The student council started things off by
putting together Homecoming 2001. The theme for
this year's homecoming was "Disney Fairytales." The
student council also added something new by hosting a
Sadie Hawkins dance, where the girls ask the guys.
As always, the student council sponsored
Operation Cool, an organization to remind teens and
teachers to always wear their seat belts. Prizes were
given to those who were caught wearing their seat belts
before or after school. Operation Cool is a program
meant to help save the lives of students and teachers.
Eric Buck was chosen to represent our school
in the Operation Cool Program and was awarded $250.

The 2000-01 AFS organization was very successful
this year. Everyone welcomed the foreign exchange
student, Christina Braun, to the school. Christina's host
family was the Schaechers. The club was very delighted
to have her here.
In December, the AFS had a Christmas party for
Christina. She shared information about life in Germany
with the club. The organization also went to Navy Pier
Theatre in Chicago to see "Joseph and the Amazing
Techni-Color Dreamcoat." To sum it up, the AFS had an
exciting year, complete with many memories.
The AFS members have fun eating and talking at the annual Christmas
party.

Ein herzliches "Gruess Gott" an alle!
I'm Christina Braun from Eichenau near
Munich, Germany, and I had the luck to spend an
incredible AFS-year here at Wethersfield High School.
I am the second daughter of Ludwig and Susan BraunClarke. My dad works as a glaciologist (nature scientist)
and my mom is a translator and a housewife. My sisters
are Rebecca (19), Juliana (15), and Kira (4) and one
brother, Thaddeus (5).
I have been staying with the Schaecher's
who have been a loving, fun and supporting family all
year long. I am happy that they took the challenge of
hosting me. They gave me a great insight of the
American way of life. The family is Paul and LuAnn as
the host parents and Nick, Mandy and Stefanie as host
siblings. Stef was in college already, but Mandy and I
went to visit her a few times.
While I have been here, I have tried many
new things and went places I never thought I would go
to. At the beginning of die year I went out for volleyball
and track. I really like track and I hope that I will be able
to continue high jump and long jump in Germany. The
school dances were a great experience, too. We don't
really get dressed up a lot in Eichenau. Christmas was
really snowy, I don't think I've ever seen so much snow
and Christmas decorations on the 24th. I liked going to
school here. I hope many more exchange students will be
able to go to WHS. I felt very welcome. I also thought it
was awesome how they put the German flag up every
morning.
This is the "dolicatory" Easter family photo 2000. First
row: Kira (3), Thaddeus (4), Second row: Ludwig,
Susan, Third row: Christina, Juliana (14), Rebecca (18).
LuAnn and Paul Schaecher, host parents,
Over New Years I went skiing with my host
family in Brcckenridge, Colorado. It was so cool to see
the Rocky Mountains-something I had never dared to
imagine. I had a really great time on the slopes.
Otherwise, I have been to Iowa to visit old friends and
the host family of my father Ludwig from his AFS-year
in 1969/70.1 went to Georgia over the summer, so I will
have really been around quite a bit.
Another thing I have enjoyed here is the
. great food of course! I will miss you, Taco Bell, DQ, and
La Gandola!
This year has gone past much too fast. But
• that means that I had a good time. I want to thank
• everybody for their kindness and the fun I had with
" them, both students and faculty. I loved going to WHS.
. I hope that you will keep the "Gennan girl" in good
: memory. Most of all, I want to thank my host family
; and my friends. I will try to come to as many class
: reunions as I possibly can! Love you all!

This year the Key Club came across many
problems, but eventually they towered over them. With
students having very busy lives, there was little time for
Key Club. This led to having missed many service projects
and events, but with a hard working board Key Club
turned out to be a success.
Like always, Key Club hosted a blood drive in
the fall, but this year the Key Club decided to host
another blood drive in the late winter. This allowed for
more students to have a chance to donate blood. Other
important events included the Kiwanis Pancake Supper,
Tag Days, and ABCD. ABCD is a program after school
to provide a nice environment for kids who have parents
that work after school.
Due to scheduled sporting events, only six
members were able to attend this years convention held
in Decatur, Illinois. Convention is a weekend program to
help Key Clubers learn about Key Club and to help the
club become stronger. This years sponsor was Sue
Sagmoen, and Kiwanis advisors were Gary Peterson, Will
Sagamoen and Brock Tumbleson.

The WHS Marching Band
started its season with the help of
their new director, John J. Colbert.
The band decided on "Fantasia" for
its theme this year. The concert
band also performed in a winter and
spring concert. Great songs and even
better memories made this a
successful year.
With a new director, this
year's chorus began with a fresh start.
Kate Cormeny, coming sraight out
of college, had many new ideas that
would later keep the chorus at its
best. Having only thirteen members
made perforating at the same level as
last year's chorus difficult, but she
pulled it off.
The band astounds the audience during the Christmas concert.

The Wethersf ield FFA had another busy year of
participating in contests and promoting FFA and
agriculture. Some of the many activities they have done
this year include selling corn shocks, hosting the Soils
Contest, and holding a fun and exiting FFA week in
February. Some of the most popular activities were the
pie eating, "Car Cram", and the "Kiss the Chicken"
contests. This year's FFA banquet was held on March 15.
Drew RieMaker, section three treasurer, was the speaker.
Forty-one members, guests, and parents were in attendance for the meal, which was catered by Pizza Hut. The

The sophomore class is finally
ready to take on the road. This year's Homecoming attendants were Maggie Tumbleson
and Caleb Griffith who were very honored
to represent the sophomore class.
This year's election became a surprise when Daniela Garcia and Bryan Blanks
tied for class president. Their first challenge
was bringing the class together to build a
Homecoming float, which took first place.
The sophomore class, with the help of their
class sponsor Mrs. Morthland, worked hard
and long to make this year's Midwinter a success. The theme for Midwinter was "Winter
in New York."
The sophomore year is a very exciting time for many high-schoolers. They
finally get the privilege of getting their licenses. Next year the sophomores have many
challenges to overcome, but they still have a
very positive outlook on the future.
As the sophomores finish these
next years, they will look back at this year
as a memorable time. As a class they must
work together and compromise to make a
successful group, and the sophomore class
has had no trouble doing this.

Ceurt fiardly Wait
At last we're seniors. It's hard
to believe how fast the time flew. It
seems like just yesterday we were
learning how to tie our shoes in
Kindergarten. Now we're going off to
college, to a new job, or maybe just
taking it easy for a while. But
whatever we do, our family is still
splitting up. These are the last times
we have to walk down the halls of
Wethersfield High School as a class,
but as a class, we'll enter the world to
start our lives.

Road Trip
The senior trip took seniors on a wild ride
to Six Flags. Leaving at 6:45 in the morning,
everyone was wide-eyed and bushy-tailed. On
the chartered bus, the seniors watched Top
Gun. Dirty Dancing, Runaway Bride, and Mission Impossible. It was a partially rainy day
with some sun, but the rain didn't stop the seniors from having fun. Many of the seniors
rode the roller coasters even in the rain. Others snuggled with their honey in the souvenir
shops. Some spent their time at game booths
and won lots of fabulous prizes.
Even though the weather wasn't so great,
the seniors really enjoyed their last day together. They arrived home about 8 at night. It
was a tiring day filled with fun and laughter.

The 2000-2001 Wethersfield Yearbook Staff has worked hard to put together this year's yearbook. We present it to you and hope that you will enjoy the book and use
it to help keep your memories of Wethersfield High School in your hearts forever. We would like to thank PhotoPrint for taking all of our pictures and our Walsworth representative, Kerry Hanrahan, for her assistance. We would also like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Harrison for the amazing patience and tireless guidance she has given us this year.
We'll miss her greatly next year but we want to wish her the best of luck.
