Sewing
Sew with a ¼" seam and with fabrics right sides together unless directed otherwise. Pin units/borders
together well before sewing. Do not prewash fabrics.
For one placemat: Sew one Marble LTUR rectangle together with one Marble CRM
background rectangle along the short sides. Press the seam allowance toward the
Marble LTUR rectangle. Repeat steps to make two units. Positioning units as shown,
pin and sew two units together on the long sides. Press the seam allowance open.
Cut a piece of lightweight fusible web 5 ½" x 10". Following manufacturer’s directions,
fuse to the wrong side of the Faded Floral IVR rectangle. Remove paper backing. Place
rectangle in center of placemat as shown. Fuse in place. Machine zigzag around rectangle.
Heart appliqués: From the Coffee Love TUR fabric, cut out any three large hearts. Place hearts on the
paper side of fusible web and trace around each one. Cut out fusible web shapes. Following manufacturer’s
directions, fuse the web to the wrong side of each heart and remove paper backing. Place the hearts
on placemat as follows: one 1 ½" from the center top, one on the top right corner of the fused center
rectangle, and one on the bottom left corner of the fused center rectangle. Fuse in place and machine
zigzag around hearts.
Word appliqués: From the Café BRN fabric select three words or phrases you like and with a permanent
marker and ruler draw a rectangle ¹⁄ 8" – ¼" beyond the edge of each word/phrase. The model uses one of
each of the following: French Press, Java, and Dark Roast. Cut on the drawn lines around each word/phrase.
Cut a piece of fusible web the same size as each word/phrase. Fuse the web to the wrong side of each
word fabric piece and remove the paper backing. Place the words as shown and fuse in place.
Machine zigzag around each rectangle.
To attach the borders, pin and sew a Coffee Swirl BRN rectangle to the left and
right of the placemat. Press the seam allowances toward the borders.
Slightly trim the outer edge of the placemat to 13 ½" x 19 ½", if needed.

Finishing
Layer the three pieces in this order: batting, backing (right side up), and placemat front (wrong side up). Pin
together. Sew around the edge, leaving a 4" opening on one long side. Remove pins, clip seams and corners.
Turn right side out. Press placemat from the back. Topstitch around the front, ¹⁄ 8" from the edges, closing
the 4" opening.
Machine quilt around the center rectangle, around the word and heart appliqués, and next to the border
seams with matching color thread or as desired.
Repeat steps to make four placemats.
