Have FUN Creating Placemats on Your
Have FUN Creating Placemats on Your This is an easy beginner project to reinforce what you have already learned: • • • • • • • • Transferring designs from the USB to the Quilt Magician (QM) Creating a folder Copying designs from the USB into the folder created Baste, adjust stitch length, adjust speed, and center a design Edit: move, rotate, resize, remove, autofill, merge, smart scale Adding multiple designs onto the quilting surface Choosing QM designs Quilting the designs Note: Don’t forget what you have already learned about the care of your machine. Cleaning and oiling are an important part of machine maintenance. If you need a refresher, check the instruction manual that came with the machine or watch the videos on the tinlizzie18.com website. Have the QM Users Manual handy to reference if you have any questions on how to do something in the Quilt Magician or watch the videos on the tinlizzie18.com website . Materials: Since these are practice pieces, use fabrics you have on hand. • Fabric: • Top: 2 ½ yards -45” wide for top (1 ½ yards for quilting the four placemats and one yard allowed to make 2” bias cut strips for the binding). • Back: 1 ½ yards 45” wide fabric • Cotton batting • New needle (if one is needed) • Quilting cotton thread to coordinate or contrast with fabrics for top and bobbin • Sewing thread to bind the placemat • Fusible tread (optional) • Rectangle placemat design Basic Sequence of steps to create the four placemats: 1. 2. 3. 4. Load the fabric on the frame; thread the machine. Create a new folder and load the “Rectangle Placemat” Add two placemat designs onto the quilt area; rotate the placemat design. Add QM designs into the rectangular placemat area; edit the designs to fit the area. 5. Stitch the first two placemats. 6. Roll the quilt. 7. Repeat the steps 3-5 to create two more placemats. 8. Remove the placemats from the frame and cut out along the stitching line. 9. Bind the edges of each placemat. 10. Enjoy your new placemats! Load the back fabric, top fabric and batting Use the Baste feature, set the stitch length, and baste the top, batting and backing fabric together at the top and sides. Place the Rectangle Placemat design on the USB stick. Create a new folder and name it “Placemat” Locate the “Rectangle Placemat” design on the USB stick, prepare to copy it to a new folder. The design is now ready to be added to the quilt area. Follow the prompts on the screen to define the quilt area. Add pattern and select the placemat design. The design is over 19” tall. It needs to be rotated so two will be able to be stitched side to side. Rotate the design CW. Under the edit menu, select Move. The design needs to be moved to fit within the quilt area. Move the placemat design to the upper left hand corner is in the upper left hand corner of the quilt area. Add a second placemat design, rotate and move it to the right of the first. Check the stitch length and adjust it to what you would like. Follow the prompts to start stitching. Stitch the rectangular placemat outlines. Remove the pattern on the screen Each placemat will now be treated as a separate area (just like a quilt block) and designs added and edited to fit the area of the placemat. Treat the first rectangle as a new layout. Follow the prompts on the screen to measure the area. Begin and end about ½” inside the rectangle area. This is like adding a design to a block area on a quilt. (There is another way to do this, but it will be reinforced in a future project.) Using the design selection in the Quilt Magician, choose an overall design such as “Charms” under the “General” folder. Go to Add pattern, and find the “Charms” design in the the “General” folder. Autofill the area keeping the pattern proportions Move the design to center it in the area by holding and dragging or using the arrows. When you are happy with the location, tap the check mark. Now “Merge” the designs and watch the start and end points change. Stitch the design inside the first rectangle placemat area. It is so much FUN to watch designs stitch out on the Adjust the stitching speed as desired. Now the same steps will be repeated to create a quilting design on the second placemat. Start with a new layout, set the quilt area as the area inside the second rectangle placemat We’ll use this feather design under the “Blocks” folder. Add the pattern. Locate that pattern under the “Blocks” folder and select the design. To fill the center area of the placemat rectangle with the design we’ll “Smart Scale” it. Chose Smart Scale, and keep the pattern proportions. The pattern needs to be centered within the placemat rectangle area. We could move the design like we did before, but there is an automatic centering feature making centering very easy and accurate. Choose “AutoCenter” and watch the design pop into the middle of the placemat area. There is still an area on each side that will accommodate another design. The design Feathers Blk 3” is the same style and will fit nicely on each side of first design. Find this pattern and select it. After the design is added, it needs to be moved to align with the first design. It faces outward and we want it to face inward, so the design has to first be mirrored Vertically. Once it faces the correct direction, then use the move function to align it with the first design as shown. Repeat the steps of adding the same design to the right side and moving it into position (it doesn’t need to be mirrored this time). Because there are tight curves, you may wish to adjust the stitch length so it is shorter and will make for smoother stitched curves. Start the machine and stitch the design. creates beautiful, consistent stitching throughout the design. Repeat the steps for creating two more placemats: • Set the quilt area • Add the rectangle placemat pattern twice • Stitch out the rectangle placemat For the second two placemats different designs will be added. Now roll the fabric so the previous two placemats show just below the rail. Choose the “Cont leaves” pattern in the Flowers folder for the third placemat, and autofill the area with the design, auto center it and stitch. For the fourth placemat, choose the “open meander” design in the Geometric folder. Autofill the area Stitch the design following the display screen prompts. and merge the design. Remove the fabric from the rails and cut out each placemat, cutting just outside the placemat stitching line. To create the binding, cut 2” bias strips (stitch them together if necessary) and press the binding in half lengthwise. Stitch the binding to the edge of the placemat meeting cut edges and mitering the corners. Stitch the binding on using a ¼” seam allowance. To finish off the end, fold down one edge of the binding as shown, overlapping the second edge over the fold, pin in place and stitch. Trim the excess fabric. There are several brands of fusible threads on the market. An optional step is to use “Fusible Thread” to hold the binding in place temporarily for stitching. Thread the top of the machine with the fusible thread and baste stich a line right next to the stitching line for the binding. Using a warm iron, press the binding to the right side. Continue to press the binding all the way around the placemat, mitering the corners then use the same thread that was used for quilting the designs to stitch the binding in place.
