Luisa Martorelli to introduce the ancient
ceramics tradition from Vietri sul Mare,
a small center on the Amalfi Coast in the
sunny South of Italy.

The centuries-old tradition in the ceramics handicraft, the
“Vietri System”, is in Italy a concept that already existed
and became appreciated since the end of the 1700.
The colors are still today mixed by the experenced Vietri’s
masters, their recipe is kept secret and handed on from
generation to generation, in order to obtain the most original and special shadings.
Patterns which has been inspirated by the Classic World
(mostly by Pompeji’s excavations) constantly surprise
for their actuality; the most modern ones stuck for their
beauty, which reveals the long tradition that has contributed to generate them.

According to the most diffused theory, Vietri’s origins can
be traced back to the Etruscans. The ceramics production
in Vietri had the undeniable advantage to get inspiration
from the immense and prestigious figurative patrimony
like the Greek-Roman one, especially after the first discoveries during the Pompeii excavations at the end of the
1700’s. The colours and the subjects often in fact drew
inspiration from the classic world, such as “gorgons’
heads” and “hourglasses”, “waves”, “chessboards” and
“meanders”.
