surrounded by it. Just enough
water separates over 74 large and
small islands, most within easy
cruising distance. Water laps on to
countless palm-fringed island and
mainland beaches. Just offshore,
coral and colourful tropical fish live
at dozens (yes, dozens) of reefs
fringing many islands. Then there’s
the world’s largest living thing, the
Great Barrier Reef, out in the big
blue. Thirty minutes if you fly, just
over two hours on an easy cruise.

Marino’s Italian Deli & Pasta Takeaway

Funky and friendly, unique and quirky, seriously good coffee
and lovingly house-made food … Airlie’s newest café, has
quickly become a local’s favourite. Located at the end of
the Bicentennial Walkway in one of Airlie’s most spectacular
locations at Cannonvale Beach, you’ll always find a gorgeous
sea breeze that makes for the perfect spot to relax and enjoy
the incredible views and
laid-back atmosphere.
Craving fabulous panini? Needing a take home meal of
the freshest pastas, gnocchi to die for or Lamb Shanks
ala Barese? The Italian flavour and heart is dished out in
quantity by chef Marino and his wife Yvonne.
Advice from a local: phone ahead to avoid the takeaway
queues. Irresistible deli fare and coffee are a bonus.

into Strathdickie Road at ‘The Strathdickie Smithy’.

views, all within easy driving
distance. Go exploring, find some
great photo opportunities and
some stunning but little publicised
hidden treasures.
On the road to Proserpine, turn onto Conway Road
and follow the signs to Cedar Creek Falls. The falls
and the cool freshwater pool are spectacular in
the wet season, but are always worth a visit and a
quick clamber over the rocks. Travel on to Conway
and Wilson (good boat ramp) Beaches for great
fishing or the postcard perfect park on the beach
at Conway.
Drive west through Proserpine,
on to
Crystalbrook and Lake Proserpine for
fishing,
water skiing and wake boarding
(private
boats only) and the prettiest picnic
spot in
the vicinity. Walk along the Peter Faus

if you
have them. Whilst in the area keep and
eye out
for gliders on the northern side of Cryst

, no need to worry
about the tides here. Simply
magical. Quiet, too.
Drive to Proserpine, head down the Bruce
Highway and turn right at Calen (partly
unsealed), Mt Ossa or just past Kuttabul. All
are scenic roads that lead you through Finch
Hatton (interesting pub and craft shops) and
the Pioneer Valley to a pretty mountain road.
Drive the S-bends into Eungella, with its
beautiful rainforest and over 30 km of bush
walks. The view is spectacular. Optionally you
can venture even further into the towering
rainforest and white water countr y to Broken
River Mountain Resort. Up on the mountain, if
you stay into the evening, there’s a chance of
sighting a platypus in the wild
From Airlie, take the Bowen turn-off and follow
the signs. The infinite white sands of Dingo
Beach are a beach-combing paradise. Cape
Gloucester is further along, featuring two ecofriendly beachfront resorts facing west onto
Edgecumbe Bay, hence they are very proud of
their spectacular sunsets, not to mention their
lunch time hospitality.

The

Other evidence includes the cane train

Dingo Beach
The infinite white sands of Dingo
Beach are a beachcomber’s paradise
and the fishing and snorkelling are
excellent (local boat hire available). A
good pub and general store serves
lunch and sells bait.
Cape Gloucester
Further along, beyond Hydeaway
Bay, is the Gloucester Passage
and Island, for secluded beachfront
resorts. Have lunch and a cool drink
while the kids play. Both offer water
sports. Stay overnight to see one of
the world’s best sunsets from the
west-facing beaches.

Cape Hillsborough and its surrounds
If you seek the very best sunsets
the tropical north has to offer, then
Cape Hillsborough National Park,
just thirty minutes drive north
of Mackay, is a must-do. Due
to prehistoric volcanic activity,
it’s rainforest and rock-strewn
headlands stretch to the shoreline
of the Great Barrier Reef Marine
Park. Numerous tracks lead to
great photo opportunities. The
park is home to innumerable
species of birds and animals; if
staying overnight you can expect

Misty rainforests, lush groves and
