Ilfracombe Museum
From the wonderful photo archives here
at Ilfracombe Museum we have two
pictures of a daring exploit undertaken
between Ilfracombe and the Mumbles,
Swansea, in 1930. We thought that a
story about a sea-going adventure would
be entirely appropriate for September,
and the Sea Ilfracombe weekend.
The top photo shows a young man being
towed behind a speedboat, the
‘Whoopee’. You will notice that the
photographer has unfortunately missed
half the man out of his photograph, but
the boat was travelling at quite a speed
and it must have been a challenge to get
everything in the shot! It is taken from
Mumbles Pier. The second photo shows
the occupants of the boat, again on Mumbles Pier.
What has this got to do with Ilfracombe? The Ilfracombe Chronicle of 1st August 1930 gives a detailed
report. A young man was towed across the Bristol Channel on a surf board, behind the ‘Whoopee’. His
name was Captain Charles Ratcliff, and he was the owner of several speedboats that took thrill-seekers out
into the Channel and to Lundy Island. No doubt partly as a publicity stunt, and perhaps as a dare, he decided to see if he could cross to the Mumbles whilst staying upright behind the boat.
A crowd of spectators had gathered in Ilfracombe on Capstone and waved him off across choppy waters.
Soon he was out of sight and making good progress towards the Mumbles. As he neared Mumbles
lighthouse the boat encountered a strong tide and rough water, and Charles was only holding on with great
difficulty. Once near the Pier the water calmed and the boat successfully docked at the Mumbles, in a time
of 1 hour 20 minutes. On board was a press representative, Mr T Edwards, who wrote in the Chronicle
that this ‘must have been the greatest feat ever performed on a surfboard’.
After a short rest in Mumbles, including a photo call, the crew returned to Ilfracombe on the ‘Whoopee’.

The return journey to ‘Combe was even faster than the outward trip, and took just 50 minutes, which the
Chronicle stated was a new record for crossing the Channel. ‘On arrival back at Ilfracombe the first person
to congratulate Capt. Ratcliff on the wonderful performance was ‘Suicide’ Bob Perry, one of the Death
Riders on the Pier – truly a meeting of speed giants.’ This gives a fascinating clue to the fact that a travelling
Wall of Death motorbike show had arrived in Ilfracombe in the summer of 1930. So far we have not been
able to unearth any other photos or references to this show, but we’ll keep digging. What we do know is
that Bob Perry was a world-class stunt rider from America who was touring England in 1929 and 1930
with, amongst others, his sister Jenny, who also rode ‘the Wall.’ The Wall of Death, wildly popular in
America, had never been seen in England before
1929, and Bob was a pioneer. By the mid-1930s
there were a host of shows travelling around
England’s fairs, including one with Tornado
Smith who used to take his pet lioness up the
Wall in a sidecar! The fact that a new attraction
such as this had arrived in Ilfracombe so soon
after its introduction shows how important a
resort this was in the 1930s.

ILFRACOMBE and District 1851
29th January 1852
A Mutton Mutiny.—On Wednesday the 21st inst., three men, belonging to the schooner ‘Superb,’ Capt.
Balley, then in this port, were brought before Sir James Meek and Nathaniel Vye, Esq., magistrates, charged
with refusing to work. The men having “signed articles,” and the charge having been sustained, were
committed for one month to the house of correction. The cause of the rebellion, is said to have been their
having to eat, not “mutton cold,” but mutton roast, oftener than was pleasing to their fastidious palettes. The
blue jackets who best know the moves of their own order, think the mutton mutiny nothing more than a ruse
to get clear of the ship, which will be effected by their month’s feeding upon the various dishes of the prison,
and by the other exercises in that road to liberty. The real cause is still believed to lie somewhere about the
victualliing offices.
Our Local Magistracy.—That part of the public of this town, still ignorant of the fact, will be glad to hear,
that an addition has been made to our local magistracy in the person of Sir James Meek, CB, who has
received from the Lord Chancellor the commission of the peace. This increase of the magistrates we hope to
see followed by the establishment here of a petty sessions to remedy the great inconvenience and expense of
parties having any business to the Bench being compelled to go all the way to Combmartin. Many causes of
action affecting the peace and good order of the town are no doubt frequently foregone in consequence of the
loss of time, expense, and trouble of taking witnesses and what not five or six miles from the town. We
should hardly suppose there was a town in the kingdom, the size of Ilfracombe, and a seaport too, in which
there was not a petty sessions. We hope that those to whom it naturally belongs to see to these matters, will
move in the proper quarter to obtain so desirable an object. We shall then have a Board of Health to purify
our homes and ways, and a magistracy to mind our manners.
The “Hobblers” Hubbub.—A quarrel between those peaceful citizens of our quay had likely on Saturday last
to have had with one of the boat’s crews, a tragical end. The ‘Express,’ steamer had been compelled to put
back to port through stress of weather. The steamers are respectively served by particular boats and crews
and for another to trespass upon his rights is resented as breaking the laws of the service. The boat in this
instance which first boarded the steamer was not the one belonging to her, but somehow they lodged
themselves or some part of them on board; presently came the gig and crew who claimed the prize as their
prescriptive right. A tussle ensued as to who should get the hawser during which the steamer being in motion
with the last boat, we believe, seven hands in her, was run into and all the hands tumbled into the water. So
enraged were the other party, and so wanting in the common duties of humanity even to the worst enemy that
they never moved an oar to assist them in their terrible peril. Their danger was seen from the shore and
assistance immediately sent off by which, and with the aid of some life buoys thrown from the steamer they
were all preserved from a watery grave. For the honour of the place we forbear to give the names of the men
guilty of so fearful an act and as refusing to assist even their enemies when perishing, hoping that reflection
has before now brought them to a better mind. The injury done to the boat ran into will cost £5 to repair.
4th March 1852
Vestry Meeting.—Little has been heard of vestry meetings since the formation of the Board of Health. Last
Saturday, however, one was convened at the usual place and time, for the purpose, chiefly, of electing a list
of persons eligible to serve as constables for the next year, which list is presented to the magistrates at their
sitting, who have to decide on what honoured individuals of the number are to serve. At the same meeting
the question was entertained whether to continue in his office the present paid constable. Against him, as
against every other official, there were many complaints, and which at the meeting he had the privilege of
hearing. There was notwithstanding the charges, a majority in favour of retaining him; he will now have an
opportunity of mending the faults complained of, as far as the complaints were just or true, and showing that
a word to the wise is sufficient. Our police constable (so called sometimes) is not a regular “Peeler,” and
wears no uniform. It has been suggested that a few weeks’ training amongst the “regulars” with the addition
of the uniform,--the blue coat, &c., belt, shining boots, hat without a bruise, and extra shave—would have a
marvellous effect in increasing self-respect and consequently at increasing his influence greatly in the
prosecution of his office.
1st April 1852. The Berrynarbor Robbery. The burglar, who broke into the house of Pearce, the butler of
A.D. Bassett, Esq., on Sunday the 14th inst., and stole therefrom a watch and other articles, was brought up
for his final examination before the magistrates on Thursday 29th and fully committed to the county gaol to
await his trial at the next assizes. On some parts of his clothing was discovered the Queen’s “broad arrow,”
prove it to be Government property. From subsequent enquiries there is reason to believe that he is one of
the convicts under sentence of transportation who sometime ago escaped Dartmoor prison. Should that be
proved it will have no tendency to mitigate his next sentence.

Events 4 Ilfracombe
Didn’t they do well? Round Table ran a cracking Birdman at the beginning of August. Even the weather was
perfect, not too hot, not too cold, bit of wet in the morning to freshen things up then sunny for the main
event. I am told by Mr Birdman that over 5000 people turned up, ate over 1000 burgers and 500 hot dogs
plus a whole hog roast and donuts. Twenty jump (or should that be ‘fly’?) teams both local and from afar
dazzled the crowds along with live music and other entertainment from Make a Move and The Voice FM.
The fireworks were a surprise and a fabulous end to a really good day. We await with baited breath the
final tally of profits…
By the time you read this we will also have had Rescue Day (last time with the Sea King!), Carnival, The
Beer Festival at The Landmark and the minis on August Bank Holiday. They were still in the future when
we went to press so more info on how it all went next time. August is always the busiest month in the
event calendar but there is plenty still to do after the kids have gone back.
Our next event in the town is Sea Ilfracombe over the weekend of 4 – 6 September. The Sea Ilfracombe
team are pulling out all the stops to provide a weekend packed with entertainment for all the family.
Maritime displays, the Boat Stories Premier, children's entertainment, live music and local food vendors all
coming together to celebrate our links with the sea. It all kicks off on Friday 4th at the Landmark Theatre
with the Boat Stories premier. The series of short films invites us to take a glimpse into the lives of those
who earn their living locally from the sea, who work in all weathers and those who take to the water just
for the fun of it. Tickets are free and can be booked from the Landmark Theatre, but hurry as they are
going fast. Saturday and Sunday see a full programme of land and sea based entertainment and live music
with a selection of street vendors to suit all appetites.

On Sunday there is the Ilfracombe Triathlon which consists of a 400m sea swim from Ilfracombe harbour, a
15.5 mile hilly cycle course which takes in some fantastic views along the coastline from Combe Martin,
and a stunning 6k run that leads competitors through some of the most breath-taking sea views around
Ilfracombe. Sea Ilfracombe programems will be available from local stores and the Landmark Theatre

Saturday 12 September sees the Ilfracombe Bike Show on The Seafront. Hundreds of bikers (motorcycles,
trikes etc) meet up to display their bikes and compete for individually hand crafted trophies. Each year sees
more and more bikers from across the region and afar – over 300 in 2014. There are stalls and music
throughout the afternoon. This event is run by the North Devon Motorcycle Action Group (NDMAG).
The very popular and even more quickly sold out Dead Famous in Ilfracombe is back on Saturday,
September 5 bringing history alive at Holy Trinity Church at 5.30pm. Tickets are £10 and include seasonal
soup and crusty bread and wine. Tickets are on sale at Ilfracombe Museum and the Tourist Information
Office in the Landmark.
The official Ilfracombe Calendar is now on sale price £4 from retailers around the town including The
Tourist Information Centre at The Landmark, St James Dairy, Church Street Post Office and in the High
Street from Ilfracombe Book Store, Jeffery’s Newsagents & Pedlars. The calendar features views from
around the town donated by local (and some not so local) photographers, and raises money for
Events4Ilfracombe to allow us to pay running costs for events such as road closures and other licenses.

Community Announcements
ILFRACOMBE FLORAL ART CLUB
Well, now is the time when we decide which
activities we’d like to keep us occupied during
winter evenings. How about flower arranging? We
hold demonstration evenings and workshops on the
2nd and 4thTuesday evenings from September until
May. We are a friendly group who would love to
welcome new friends - and past members too! We
do have fun on our workshop evenings! In January
we will celebrate our 50th anniversary so watch this
space for events. This month, on 22nd September
we welcome a talented demonstrator from
Cornwall, Elaine Reynolds who, I am sure, will keep
us entertained with her stories as well as displaying
her talents with flowers. See Diary page for details.

ILFRACOMBE COMMUNITY TRANSPORT
Late-night minibus service to and from Mortehoe
and Woolacombe is 'picking up!' - more passengers
are using it. A reminder that the service is available
to members of the public as well as employees. In
addition to our usual services advertised elsewhere
in Focus, we have recently taken groups to
Torrington Common to look at Trumpton Village
being built and almost finished by the Torrington
Cavaliers and due to be set on fire on August Bank
Holiday Monday. This was followed by lunch at The
Black Horse. On Saturday 8 August we held a 60s
Night to raise funds for the Community Minibuses,
organised by Trustee, Sylvia Prideaux. This was a
most enjoyable and nostalgic evening and raised
£260. Many thanks to Sylvia, all who came and
supported and especially to the DJ, Roy. On
Tuesday 11 August, our minibus brought a group
over from Northam. They spent about 3 hours
experiencing the delights of Ilfracombe. On 12
August, two minibuses took 27 passengers to
Sydney House, Chulmleigh for afternoon tea.
Rosie, as usual, made us all very welcome and we
enjoyed our tea. Afterwards we had a look around
her garden with its pond and many ducks and with
lovely views over Dartmoor. If you would like to
join in our friendly outings by minibus, please
contact Shirley Jones on 01271 863630. We also
acquired a further minibus - we are still waiting for
the one promised from Government funds!
TORRS LADIES CLUB
We were back at Brookdale on 10th August after
our break, and the meeting was very well attended.
Shirley welcomed everyone on a very bright and
sunny afternoon. After the formal business I took
numbers for our monthly lunch club and we
decided to go to Ilfracombe Golf Club, they do a
very nice lunch there and many places in town are
very busy in August.
Barbara gave out birthday posies, quite a few as we
hadn't met in July and very lovely they were too.
Vida had news of the singing group, they will meet
next on the 19th September at Windsor Court to
organise their winter programme. Any members
who would like to join them get in touch with Vida
at the next meeting.
Next Shirley introduced Ivan Frances our guest
speaker. He had come to tell us about "Ilfracombe in
Bloom". He has been chairman of the Committee
for the pass ten years during which time funds have
dropped dramatically to only £9,000 per year. We
were all amazed to hear about all the different
places as well as gardens that come under Britain in
Bloom committee's umbrella. The committee do
have help from the council the Rotary Club and
various other groups of people in the town Ivan is
obviously a very committed and passionate leader of
a great band of people who help make our town a
place to be proud of.
In September our meeting is on Monday the 14th
starting at 2-00pm, visitors are always welcome and
it is Shirley's Quiz afternoon.
CAPSTONE LADIES’ CLUB
Our meeting was held on Monday 27th July and it was a joy to
welcome back our speaker for the afternoon - Rosemary
Wedlake, also known as the “Hat Lady”. We were especially
grateful as she is suffering from a broken foot, falling off a step
while chasing a squirrel and she then walked round France for
five days before having an x-ray!
Rosemary is the last survivor of seven children and while the
older children went off to work on their careers, she, being
one of the youngest stayed at home, to help look after her
father who was injured in the first World War. She had a
close relationship with her mother who was a teacher and she
told us that she learned everything from her.
She has a wonderful collection of hats, some she has bought
and others that have been given, but every hat tells a story
which she retells while changing hats. Shapes change with eras
and fashion but everyone seemed to suit Rosemary. We were
given the tip “always wear a hat so you can see the brim, never
on the back of the head.”
Her sense of humour is remarkable and she had us in stitches
for most of the afternoon. Rosemary is writing a book about
her life – that should be good!
The raffle was won by Rosemary Riorden and Jan Cross.
Competition winners: 1st Chris Stockwell, 2nd Joyce Johnson,
3rd Jan Cross. Flower of the Month: 1st Jan Cross, 2nd
Margaret Burden, 3rd Pat Nott. There were three birthday
flowers. We do not meet in August so our next meeting will
be Monday September 28th at 2.15pm in Emmanuel Church
when our speaker will be Paul Swales on Nepal and India.

the ownership of your burial rights are recorded in our
registers, and any owner of the burial rights has the automatic
right to be interred in the plot provided there is space.
It is possible to transfer the burial rights of any plot and a set
procedure is used to do this, as the rights do not automatically
transfer to living relatives. These rights of burial at Score were
purchased for a period of 100 years, and even if several
generations have passed since the first owner died.

SHAMMICK ACOUSTIC
We’re now on the downward run to the end of the year, and that starts with our Open Night on Saturday 12th.
Open Nights are for anyone and everyone to ‘sing, say or play’, and if you’re a musician and you don’t want to play
solo, there’s often a chance during the break for a bit of a jam session. The evening is usually made up of an eclectic
mix of songs, music, poems and stories. Anyone is welcome to come along, and though encouraged to participate,
they won’t be pressurised to do so – you’ll be just as welcome if you just want to listen. It’s a friendly, informal and
fun environment, with no admission fee, although the pot is passed around for contributions to the club’s expenses.
Our guest night on Saturday 26th welcomes two artists who have played at the club before, although not in this
combination. Paul Downes is no stranger to either the West Country (a native and resident of Exmouth) or in
particular to Shammick Acoustic. He seems to turn up as a guest artist on a regular basis, either on his own or with
other performers – this time with renowned singer-songwriter Mick Ryan.
Mick is well-known on the English folk scene not just for his superb voice, but also for his songwriting, many of which
songs are sung by a host of other professional and amateur performers. Having written both comic and serious
material for the very popular band, Crows, in the ‘80s, he has since written for radio and a series of highly successful
folk operas, such as ‘The Voyage’, ‘The Navvy’s Wife’, ‘The Pauper’s Path’ and most recently the WW1 show, ‘A
Day’s Work’, all with a host of superb singers and musicians.
Paul is one of the most respected artists on the British acoustic music scene. A consummately skilled guitarist and
expressive singer, with the ability to bring apparently effortless brilliance to his dazzling array of guitar styles, he has
worked with the likes of Phil Beer, presently of Show of Hands, The Arizona Smoke Revue, Pete Seeger, The Joyce
Gang and Maggie Boyle.
