Term 3 Week 7
What a Wonderful Week of Learning!
Coming Events
Southern Stars
In my first bulletin as Relieving Principal, I wanted to take a
Show Week –
moment to stop and reflect on the wonderful learning that is
26th – 28th
taking place at Gerringong Public School. I was overwhelmed
August
with the amazing
art responses
Nachos Day

students as they
engage in their
Disco – 4th
Unit of Inquiry
September
that focuses on
Art. The language
Last day of Term
was insightful and

sophisticated.
Stage 1 students are actively inquiring into their
world and how natural disasters occur. They
have been busy wondering, researching and collaborating as they utilise books, iPads and ‘experts’. Stage students,
having been ‘rapping’ their learning about ‘Our Changing World’. Early Stage 1 had buttery smiles last week, as they
were inquiring into the process of ‘paddock to plate’ and learnt how to make butter.
Teachers in Training
Recently, we welcomed 4 students from university. These ‘teachers in training’ are undergoing their final and most
significant practical experience. As an ‘intern’, they are approved to teach unsupervised to ensure they experience the
full realm that being a teacher entails. They are, of course, under the supervision of our wonderful teachers, who
support, model, mentor and provide them with feedback as they grow and learn. I meet with them each week and
they are constantly buzzing with excitement as they engage with our students and get to see what they learn at
university put into practice by their mentor teachers.
NAPLAN
Our results were released last week, once we undertake our evaluation I will be able to provide you a thorough
report, until then I would like to congratulate the students and teachers on their results. NAPLAN results are a
reflection of the student’s whole school, not just the year they sit the test. We were at or above state average in a
number of areas.
Congratulations!
Our regional athletics representatives made us very proud last week in Canberra. Many are off to State. Check out
our sports section for all the details.
Select Mutual Bank
I would like to thank Mr Knox on entering his grandson Tommy into the Select Mutual Bank Science Education
Program competition. Mr Knox won a cash prize of $500 which comes directly to our school. The funds have been
allocated to our increase our school’s science resources.
This week…As I begin my journey as Relieving Principal, and enjoy the ride that is, I am fortunate to be supported
by Ms Lauren Peters who will take my place and be the Relieving Assistant Principal, Stage 2 as well as Mr Puglisi (AP
Page 1
Stage 1), Mrs Morris (Rel. AP E. Stage1) and Mrs Willetts (AP Learning Support and Stage 3). Together with the
support of the whole staff, we look forward to the exciting events that our students will be actively engaged in over
the next few weeks. All the best to the Southern Stars dancers and our Rugby League team who are travelling to
South Wagga.

A big thank you to Leanne Davis for pulling off another
successful Meal Deal with the Savoury Rolls last
Wednesday, despite my help! I managed to nearly burn
one batch in our new oven. My fault, not the oven! We
sold out of savoury rolls and managed to make two
batches of banana bread, wow, a busy and successful morning.
Therefore you can now buy a piece of home-made banana bread, 50 cents for a small piece or $1 for a large one. If
parents keep dropping in to bake, we can hopefully put that on the new menu as a regular item. And we still have
that home-made pumpkin soup, $2.50 for a cup, $3 to add a bread roll. A nice healthy meal!
Fiona Croft has heard my pleas and is coming in on Thursday to make a batch of pasta Bolognese. It will be spirali or
penne for ease of eating, $3 for a bowl, please indicate whether you would like parmesan cheese with it. Again,
hopefully soon a regular menu item! You don’t have to pre-order, just order on the day.
And more thank you’s - Pauline Eales’ daughter dobbed her in to help at the canteen and she has picked up many
canteen shifts already, thank you Pauline. Pauline is a grandmother, so if there are any other grandmothers,
grandfathers, aunties, uncles, neighbours out there who want to meet new people, help out at school, please let
Jackie know on 0411 422 304.
And finally, the last thank you to Dean Gentle of Dean Gentle Electrical. He did the electrical work for our new
kitchen at a very good price with excellent service. If you need an electrician, give him a call on 0431 100 674.
Thanks, Nat Wieland

Choir
The 9th of September is approaching fast and we are singing our hearts out in preparation for SIMF. Please
remember to return the yellow SIMF permission slip along with $8 for the bus fare to go to the final SIMF rehearsal.
On the 3rd of September, our choir has been invited to perform at the Kindergarten Open Night to showcase their
talents to prospective students. The performance will be a fantastic opportunity to practice our songs for SIMF.
Please ensure the pink permission slip regarding this night is returned by Friday the 28th August.
Congratulations to Maddison Dennis who won the choir person of the week this week. Well Done!!

Sport
AFL – Paul Kelly Cup
Last Monday, 17th August, Gerringong made it into the
Paul Kelly Cup State Final (the largest AFL primary
school competition in New South Wales and the ACT).
To get there, we achieved higher results than tens of
thousands of students, representing 61 teams from
the Illawarra/South Coast alone.
It was a beautiful day at the SCG and the team got to
play on the hallowed turf. Throughout the day all
competitors were given the chance to meet Swans
players Nick Smith, Dane Rampe, Alex Johnson and
Sam Naismith. Koby Wood participated in the Long
Bomb Competition and was given an AFL ball.
Going down 2 games to 1, the team made me very proud with their
sportsmanship and ball skills. We almost made it to the Semi Final on
a points count back but were short of points. Well done to Koby
Wood (Captain), Fergus Flanagan (Vice Captain), Dylan Egan, Ethan
Moore, Hamish Stewart, Jack Hayward, Jack Quine, Kal Whyte, Kye
McLaren, Owen Wall, Perry Matters, Solomon Northey and Tommy
Nolan.
Many thanks to all the parents who made the journey and have been
great supporters along the way.
Mrs Miller
Soccer Clinics
Mark Johnston from Shoalhaven Football is visiting our school for the next four weeks. Stage 2 and 3 will be having
free coaching each Tuesday. Please make sure students have appropriate attire each Tuesday for the last 4 weeks of
this term.

UNIFORM SHOP
Due to recent increase in price from our supplier, we have been forced to review the cost and prices of our uniform
range.
We have tried to keep the increase to a minimum however; our suppliers have increased their costs to us by 10-15%.
Our uniform shop is 100% maintained and serviced by dedicated volunteers so as to pass savings onto our parents.
Unfortunately, these increases are out of our control.
Please find attached to this bulletin the new uniform order form. Price increase will be effective from 1 September
2015.
Additionally, Gerringong Public School P&C operates a second hand uniform service that may be of value to you.
Thank you for your continued support. We are always looking for new volunteers if you could spare a few hours
each term (Wednesdays 2:30-4:00). Please phone 0421952311 if interested.

Show Week for Southern Stars beyond the frame!
After almost a year of preparation and months of rehearsals, Southern Stars beyond the frame is in the final week –
show week.
From Monday this week the WIN Entertainment Centre will become a hive of activity as the staging and lighting goes
in and on Wednesday students will arrive to take part in two huge days of rehearsals in preparation for the four
performances on Friday and Saturday August 28 and 29.
Over 3000 public school students from around Southern NSW will perform in Southern Stars beyond the frame,
displaying their many and varied talents in music, dance, drama and even circus.
beyond the frame has something for everyone, whether you have a child in the show or not, it is worth taking your
family to see one of the best arena variety shows in the country.
If you do have children in the show make sure you pick up a copy of the Illawarra Mercury this Friday which will list
the names of all the performers in a special lift-out feature.
Additionally, you can purchase a copy of the show program which has photographs of all the school students
involved in the show – a lovely keepsake for the future!
If you haven’t purchased your tickets yet, there are still some available through Ticketmaster, but be quick! Tickets
are Adult $48, Pensioner and student over 12 $38, Student/Child under 12 $27 and Family pass $140.
And make sure to keep checking our Southern Stars – The Arena Spectacular Facebook site for more stories and
pictures from this week’s rehearsals. Like us and please share with your friends the good vibes of Southern Stars.
Home Readers
Do you have any Gerringong Public School Home Readers at
home? We have a significant number of missing Home
Readers and we are hoping that they may be in your home.
Please take some time to check and return any to your
classroom teacher. No questions asked! Lisa Morris
THANKS!
What an amazing community we have!
Last week we put a call out for someone to assist us with some digging machinery and instantly we had a response!
Many thanks to Matt Quinn for volunteering to dig our story pole holes for the Bush Tucker
garden and the trenches for the irrigation system in the Orchard!
If you are looking for a fantastic, efficient person to do some excavation work give Matt a call
on 0418 232 102!
Thanks also to Brett Hall for coming to the rescue with installing the taps and attaching it to
the water supply. We now have an irrigation system to sustain our orchard!

CHESS: Inter-School Chess Competition
This year our School Chess Team has achieved excellent results, coming second in the Illawarra Inter-School

A very big thank you to parents who supported the students by assisting with transport.

Chess Ladder has commenced with students playing each other for 1st, 2nd and 3rd trophies. It is not too late for
students to put their names down.

sticker sheet by going to www.woolworths.com.au/earnandlearn and place in the box provided at the school office.

Children are more likely to enjoy their Crunch & Sip if their produce is fresh and delicious.

Gerringong After School Care (GASC)
We offer a wonderful afternoon experience, full of fun activities, friendships, and fantastic times. We are proud of
the quality of care that we provide on a daily basis. We operate out of the school hall from the hours of 3pm to
6pm, 5 days a week, except for school holidays. Our service provides children with a healthy afternoon tea,
consisting of a fruit platter, then a small ‘main meal’. Children are then given opportunities to get involved in
activities ranging from sport, craft, drama, performance, games, projects etc. with quiet/free time always on offer.
We also openly welcome children from other schools.
Fees for our service are subject to government rebates such as the child care rebate and child care benefit. Fees are
currently $25 per day, per child (this is a maximum of $12.50 after CCR and less after CCB if entitled). For more
information please contact Marina or Lisa on 0488 999 602 or email [email protected]
