Youth in Mission Auction
Youth in Mission Auction 2015 Auction Catalog Sunday, March 22, 2015 Silent Auction Preview at 10 am Lunch begins at 12:15 pm Program begins at 12:30 pm Auction Closes at 1:30 pm About Our Ministries Over 40 Years Serving Appalachia In 1969, Glen “Tex” Evans founded the Appalachia Service Project in response to the desperate poverty he witnessed while traveling in the hills of central Appalachia. Evans, a United Methodist minister and former missionary, established ASP’s first center at Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. In the first year of ASP’s existence, volunteers repaired just four homes using whatever supplies they could scavenge. Tex Evans had a vision of a ministry that served a dual purpose: to empower the youth of America to live their lives in service to others and to transform the lives of Appalachia’s poorest families by offering them home repair. Today, more than forty years later, more than 15,000 volunteers repair approximately 500 homes in Appalachia each year. ASP has played a vital role in the youth ministry of Metropolitan Memorial since the project’s inception in 1969. This year marks our 41st year serving ASP. It is a vital part of our youth ministry as they participate in God’s work in Appalachia. The money raised during this auction will send five crews of youth to the West Virginia for a life-changing experience. Our dates for serving in mission with ASP are June 20th- 27th. We are excited to build upon our four decades of work with ASP. Youth 4 the DC Cause Our middle-school-aged youth have a great opportunity to do service right here in Washington, DC. This is our fourth year doing Youth 4 the DC Cause, and we invite all youth from rising sixth graders to rising high school freshmen to participate in serving mission projects throughout our city. These projects will be focused largely on the environment and our work on food security. We are hoping to expand our camp to have two weeks from July 19th-24th and July 26th-31st. If you would like to participate or if you have any questions, contact Patrick Landau at [email protected].
