PAGE 4 • www.londonpubliclibrary.ca • spring 2015 Introducing Your London Public Library Board 2014–2018 Stuart Clark Scott Courtice Vicki Douvalis Mariam Hamou Councillor Anna Hopkins Bassam Lazar A warm welcome to your new Library Board! In December 2014, London City Council announced appointments to Council’s civic bodies, including the London Public Library Board, with terms beginning in December 2014 and ending no later than November 30, 2018. Public Library Boards are governing boards, legal corporations with the authority to make policy and govern the library’s affairs under the Public Libraries Act. Gloria Leckie Councillor Tanya Park Hannah Rasmussen Message from your Library Board Chair I would like to share with you some information about being part of the London Public Library Board of Directors. How is the Board formed? Who is on the Board? What does the Board do? After municipal elections, the City invites applications from London residents for London’s many Boards, Commissions and Civic Bodies. The applications are reviewed by a City committee and the successful applicants appointed by City Council. The Library Board is made up of 9 members: two City Councillors and seven citizens. Our citizen members on the current Board include a lawyer, a community activist, a retired professor, a current professor, a public relations person, an administrator and a technical support analyst. The one thing all Board members have in common is a keen interest in, and concern for, the public library. At the December Board meeting, the Board elects members as a Chair and a Vice-Chair who, along with one other member, form the Board’s Executive committee for the next year. A key role of the Library Board is to keep the library operating properly and openly. We review and pass all high level policies that shape the way the library operates. These include policies on Computer Use, Rules of Conduct, Health and Safety, Access to Information, Protection of Privacy and many others. Another Board responsibility is planning for the future and looking ahead to anticipate the community’s needs. For instance, last year a new strategic plan was developed which used a great deal of citizen input to guide us in planning for the next three years. The Board Chair Gloria Leckie also keeps an eye on all the library buildings to ensure they are well maintained and we make decisions on when and where we may need to build new facilities such as the Stoney Creek Branch that was opened in 2011. The library’s budget is another important responsibility that the Board spends a lot of time on, ensuring that the library system has adequate funds to provide the needed staff, print and digital collections, and services for the citizens of London. The Library Board does not run the library on a daily basis. That management is left to our C.E.O. & Chief Librarian, and other senior staff members. The Board works very closely with the managerial staff, but we trust them to implement the library’s policies in accordance with best library practices. Senior staff bring numerous reports and recommendations to each Library Board meeting so there is always a lot to discuss. Two-way communication between the Board and senior staff is extremely important and helps all of us to keep the goal of excellent library service foremost in our minds. I find it very rewarding being a Board member for London Public Library. Walking into any branch I can see the impact that our decisions have made to this institution that is so important in the lives of so many Londoners. It’s a great feeling of accomplishment! www.londonpubliclibrary.ca • spring 2015 • PAGE 5 | communit y connec tions Multilingual Brochures: Making Everyone Feel Welcome To make everyone feel welcome at the Library we now have brochures about library services printed in a number of languages. The brochures explain what you can do at the library, that we offer programs and classes, what can be borrowed, time periods for borrowing, how to get a library card, our locations and hours, and services we provide especially for newcomers. And that it’s free! Thirteen languages were selected based on community consultation with agencies working with newcomers and immigrants. We know that the Library is an important resource for newcomers in our community. Providing information in a first language is one more way to make the transition into a new culture a little less overwhelming. Multilingual brochures are available at library locations throughout the city. Funding for this project, including translations and printing, was generously provided by Friends of the London Public Library. BOOK CAMP August 10–14 9 am–3:30 pm daily Central Library Book Camp London connects children and teens (ages 11-15) who are passionate about reading and writing with well-known authors and illustrators. Through fun, creative workshops, campers will be mentored and develop their skills as a writer or illustrator. Register online at investinginchildren.on.ca/book-camplondon or print off a form there. Forms are also available at your local library branch. Registration fee of $125 is payable to Investing in Children. Enrollment is limited. Book Camp is a program co-sponsored by London Public Library, Investing in Children and Friends of the London Public Library. PAGE 6 • www.londonpubliclibrary.ca • spring 2015 It All Starts With Words is an initiative of London’s Child and Youth Network that promotes awareness of how important giving words to children (through talking, reading, singing or rhyming) is in helping them to reach their potential. Research shows that the number of quality, positive words a child hears in an hour can dramatically impact his or her future success. 2,000 words an hour may seem like a lot, but think of how many words you can share on the bus or car ride to child care and school, just talking about what’s out the window. At least a hundred. Your child’s favourite book has more words. Robert Munsch’s Paper Bag Princess has 562 words and Charlotte’s Web has 1,027 words in the first five pages. Check out 2000wordstogrow.ca for suggestions, tips and resources that will help you discover how easy it is to add more words into the activities you already do in your day-to-day life. The Child and Youth Network is a partnership of 170 London agencies and individuals that promotes and improves literacy for children, teens and families in our community. The Library is pleased to be one of those partners. community connections | Historic Sites Committee of the London Public Library Board The Historic Sites Committee of the London Public Library Board has been identifying and marking historic buildings, places and people of significance with historic plaques since 1970. The committee is made up of volunteers with an expertise and interest in local history who are appointed by the London Public Library Board. They take suggestions for plaques from the community and from organizations. Funding for their work is raised through grants, contributions and donations. Photos and brief histories of the historic sites are available to the public on our website. londonpubliclibrary.ca/localhistory New Historic Plaque at Former Oakwood Residence The Historic Sites Committee of the London Public Library Board unveiled its 69th historic plaque at 602 Queens Avenue in November to recognize the site of Oakwood, the lavish residence of one of London’s most prominent families in the 1800s, the Cronyns. The current owner of the property, Info-Tech Research Group, provided support for the plaque and is a recipient of the Urban League Green Brick Award for its sympathetic restoration of the building. Hilary Bates Neary Hilary Bates Neary, member of the Historic Sites Committee, has been named on this year’s Mayor’s New Year’s Honour List, in recognition of her many years of work in the London heritage community. Hilary has brought her great interest in London’s heritage to the Library Board’s Historic Sites Committee for 23 years. STRETCHING THE VALUE OF A COUPON The Library is pleased to be a drop-off location for the Coupons For Hunger initiative started by two Londoners, Colleen Lindemann and Tonia Richardson, to help address the needs of those facing food insecurity in our community. Through the collecting of coupons they are able to contribute low-cost, or in many cases no-cost, items to the London Food Bank and other charitable organizations. You can find out more about Coupons For Hunger and their contributions on their website (couponsforhunger.ca). They are also on Facebook and Twitter. Drop boxes for coupons have been in place at all library locations since August 2013. Thanks to the response from the community, over 40,000 coupons have been collected at library locations in that time, helping Coupons For Hunger to collect and donate over $10,000 in food and merchandise to local charities. DROP OFF YOUR COUPONS AT ANY LIBRARY LOCATION LIBRARY RECEIVES RECOGNITION London Public Library has earned the 2014 Ontario Employer designation from the Provincial Partnership Council (PPC) in recognition of our support of experiential learning opportunities for high school students. In 2010 the Provincial Partnership Council created this designation to recognize extraordinary employers for supporting the futures of significant numbers of high school students across Ontario. London Public Library has been recognized for providing high school students with the opportunity to gain work-related knowledge, skills and experience through cooperative education and summer employment opportunities. www.londonpubliclibrary.ca • spring 2015 • PAGE 7 | children March Break c Con Movies er t s Cartooning week of awesome! I was excited to come in and when I’m excited to come in the library, sometimes I forget to be quiet. I borrowed Don’t Let the Chicken Ride the Bus and Shoo Fly Guy. I did get some other books, Bear’s Wiggly Tooth . . . I mean, Bear’s Loose Tooth. I like the end when Bear had another wiggly tooth. It was funny and the first time I read it, my Mommy was like, uh oh, not his other wiggly tooth. I’m learning to read now. Mommy teaches me and now I can read by myself. There’s some books that I could read before and they’re baby books. But baby books are for babies. Now I read Gerald and Piggy (Elephant and Piggie) and Fancy Nancy books and the Blue Beginner of Books (The Big Blue Book of Beginner Books). And I read Fly Guy. “I really like to read so much that I want to read every day.” PAGE 46 • www.londonpubliclibrary.ca • spring 2015 “I even want to read books when I’m a grown up.” I really like to read so much that I want to read every day. I even read French books. And my Mommy, some day she’s going to bring me to a Spanish school so I’ll know how to read three languages. I really want to know French like my Mom and I like to speak Spanish like Dora the Explorer. I like reading so much new books that my Mommy told me the more books I read, the smarter I get. I like being smart. Then I’ll be the smartest girl in the school. I’m excited for next September because then I’m going to be in grade two. I like the library because I like getting my library card and books. I like reading books very much because I want to learn new words. It’s interesting. I even want to read books when I’m a grown up.
