Tales of the Ancient Sportsman
By Burdell Hensley
I did it! I got my January round of
golf in on Saturday. It was 55 degrees
and I decided to give it a try. I had
to walk and that was a challenge as I
have not done much walking since
last fall. I really played quite well for
it being the first time I have played
since November. I was two under my
par after five holes and that is as far as I
went. For me every hole is a par 5 when
I play one man best ball. My body was
complaining to me and it was getting
quite hateful. I was ready to quit after
five as I’m sure I couldn’t finish.
It did feel good to get out and swing
the clubs again, but here is something
about winter golf that is different.
The water hazards are frozen (Great
bounce!!!!), The greens are frozen (Bad
bounce #%$#*&), the fairways are
frozen (Good roll) and you can’t get
your tee in the ground.
It was a sad weekend with the
passing of “Mr. Cub”, Ernie Banks.
You couldn’t help liking Ernie, even
if he was a Cub. He died holding the
record for the most games played
without ever playing in the post season.
Too bad he wasn’t a Cardinal. I always
thought that the Cardinals could have
found another Ernie Broglio that they
could have traded for Mr. Banks.
I was in college when Ernie broke
on the scene and I remember four of
us leaving at 4:00 a.m. for Chicago
and a Saturday doubleheader between
the Cubs and the Cardinals. Ernie
was playing shortstop that day and he
was good. The Cards and “Stan the
Man” won both games to complete a
memorable day for me.
The high school sports seasons are
racing toward the post season and
league races are coming to a head.
Sectional Wrestling meets are just
around the corner and before we know
it, the basketball tourneys will be under
way.
The South Iowa Cedar League finds
the Lynnville-Sully girls and the Belle
Plaine boys both unbeaten in league
play and nearing claiming the title. The
Sigourney boys have two losses and
need some help to get a share of the
title.
The Pella Lady Dutch continued to
sail along with an unbeaten conference
record in the Little Hawkeye
Conference. A win over Grinnell this
week should clinch the crown. The
LHC boy’s race is wild with five teams
battling for the top spot. Pella avenged
an earlier loss to Dallas Center-Grimes
by swamping the Mustangs 89-49
Friday night. At this point, Pella, DC-G
and Norwalk are all 5-2 while Grinnell
is 4-3. Pella Christian still has a glimmer
of hope with a 3-4 league record.
My basketball coverage took me to
Pella on Tuesday for the Pella-ADM
games. ADM may have caught Pella
looking ahead to the DC-G games,
as the Tigers gave the Dutch all they
wanted in both games before the home
team pulled out the win.
Friday night I was in Knoxville for
the Davis County-Knoxville games.
DC has been the only team to beat
Knoxville this year and the two teams
locked into a titanic struggle. Knoxville
was able to escape with a 66-63 win.
The Knoxville girls remained unbeaten
in the SCC with an easy win over the
Mustangs. The Knoxville boys then
lost to Chariton on Saturday leaving
those two teams tied for the top spot in
the league.
Thursday night I was able to cover
my first wrestling meet of the season.
Knoxville was at Oskaloosa and it came
down to the heavyweight match with
Knoxville’s Brock Caviness getting the
pin for a 37-32 Panther win.
Wrestling is certainly different today
than it was in my days at Eddyville. I
was appalled at the number of forfeits
and there was only one JV match. Back
in the 70’s and 80’s it was common that
both teams had a full lineup and they
might be a dozen or more JV matches.
I contribute the problem to the demise
of the family farm. We don’t have the
numbers of rugged farm kids anymore
and those kids were the backbone of
high school wrestling teams. I hate
to say it, but I’m not sure high school
wrestling can recover from the slide it
is experiencing.
Red Ranger has officially been
replaced. The Ranger was totaled in a
collision at the Walmart intersection
and has gone to the place where good
pickups go. Logan was able to get a
neat little white Ford Fusion to replace
the Ranger. I don’t know what Logan
calls her, but I would call her “Snow
White”. One thing for sure, she won’t
have the drinking problem Red Ranger
had.
It is time again to take a look at our
yesterdays.
100 years ago: Jan. 29, 1915- The
Cubs budget for season salaries is
$70,000 while the Cardinal budget is
$55,000. We can’t even get a clubhouse
janitor for that now.
75 years ago: Jan. 25, 1940- The
Farson girls upset defending champion,
Eddyville, in the Wapello Co.
tourney. Bowen scored 13 points and
Whittington added 10 for Farson. Mary
Simmers had 14 points for Eddyville.
Jan. 26- A new Mahaska County boys
cage champion will be crowned as
Cedar upended defending champion,
New Sharon. Nine points by Oran
Brown and eight by Don Parlett led
Cedar. Bub LeCocq led New Sharon
with 11 points. Jan. 27- Delta beat
Hedrick 28-17. Jack Reed notched
nine points and Don Roberts chipped
in with eight to lead Delta. Miller led
Hedrick with six points. Jan. 29- New
Sharon girls and Cedar boys are county
champs. New Sharon edged Barnes
City 35-33 in a thrilling girls contest.
June Ann Wahlin led NS with 14
points and Audree Phillips added 13.
Ruth Lowe led BC with 18 points. The
Cedar boys rolled to a 35-19 win over
Fremont. Harold Brown led Cedar with
10 points while Raymond Towns put
down eight and Jay Barnard and Oran
Brown added six points.
50 years ago: Jan. 27, 1965- North
Mahaska girls and Montezuma boys
post wins. The NM girls took a 46-43
win as Arlene Glendening scored 17
points and Connie Smith added 15.
Elizabeth McKee led Monte with 29
points. The Braves routed NM 83-46
as Chuck Simpson drained 28 points.
Jim Hargis led the Warhawks with 11
points. Jan. 29- Mace Brown, a North
English native, is returning to the Major
Leagues this spring as the pitching
coach for the Boston Red Sox. Jan.
30- Fremont girls win the Chiquaqua
Valley title with a 50-48 overtime
win over Hedrick. Judy Marlin led
the Kittens with 19 points and hit the
winning basket. Pat Jacobs led Hedrick
with 21 points.
25 years ago: Jan. 29, 1990- Pella
Christian girls rally to beat Knoxville
53-51. Kim Pothoven poured in 33
points to lead PC. Jan. 31- Monroe
upset the Eddyville girls 59-58, leaving
the two teams tied for the DMRC lead.
Tonya Shafer led the Rockets with
30 points. Jan. 31- North Mahaska
rolls past Twin Cedars as Laird Dahm
scored 21 points and Shane Edmundson
added 13. Jan. 31- Kevin Welsch went
over 1000 points for his career with a
29 point outburst in a 66-58 win over
Monroe. Jan. 31- Defense led the
Tri-County girls to a 48-37 win over
Sigourney. Dawn Striegle had eight
rebounds, 10 blocked shots and five
steals for T-C. Sharon Axmear led the
scoring with 24 points.
Have a great week and let’s play
some more golf.
Rocket Senior Wrestler Hunter Johnston (195#) earned
his 100th career victory on January 17 by pinning Kyler
Christensen of Bedford-Lenox in just 0:56. Congratulations
Hunter!!!

Boys Basketball Players enjoyed some down time before
Christmas. A white elephant gift exchange brought some
interesting gifts, including a Sit and Spin (being tried out by
Lane Morrison with the help of Coach Kurimski) and a basketball
net hat (modeled by Nate Siefker). Several parents supplied the
lunch which included spaghetti, garlic bread, and some sweet
goodies. Thanks to the coaches for making this a fun event for
the boys.
Warhawks fall to Iowa Valley
NEW SHARON – Tough shooting night by the North Mahaska Warhawks
against a sharp shooting Iowa Valley proved a mismatch Friday. North Mahaska
shot 28 percent from the floor and was limited to three first quarter points in a
65-46 home loss.
“Kudos to their guys, they shot well and we didn’t hit our shots,” said NM
coach Jeff Phillips. “If we could have hit our shots, it would be a different game.
We aren’t shooting as well as we did earlier in the season.”
Iowa Valley (7-7, 7-7) jumped out to a 14-3 lead after one period and extended the advantage to 36-18 at halftime.
The Warhawks (6-8, 6-8) struggled from the floor, but sophomore reserve
Milan DeJong came off the bench to score11 points and Clay Gleason added
10 for the only Warhawks in double figures. Cole Rozendaal was the leading
NM rebounder with five. DeJong also was credited with three steals and three
assist. Gleason had the team’s lone block. Brandt Fleener scored seven of his
nine second half.
“I think Milan DeJong played a very nice ball game tonight, said NM Phillips. “There are little things in his game when he shoots outside; he needs to stay
straight up. When he penetrates, he’s got to have an idea what he is going to do
it.”
IV was led in scoring by Dakota Cooling with 23 points. Ian Krutsinger and
Austin Schlabach each added 11.

EDDYVILLE – Oskaloosa and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont tipped off
their annual Eddybylooska Turtle game Friday with the visiting Indians taking a 68-61 victory over EBF.
Neither team gained mu7ch advantage until late in the game when Oskaloosa was able to sink some free throws to ice the contest.
Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont’s Jevin Jensen led all scorers with 26
points and grabbed 12 rebounds. Peyton Walker chipped in four three-pointers to finish with 16 points.
However, the balanced attack of Oskaloosa, which had four players score
in double figures, was too much. Ryan Reiter finished with 17, Tanner
DeKock had 16, Jack Moore 13 and Ki-Jana DeJong added 12.
Oskaloosa jumped on top 19-12 at the outset, but EBF rallied to take a 2827 lead at halftime. Oskaloosa came back in the third period to tie the game
at 43 as they headed into the final stanza. The game was in doubt until the
final minute when EBF fouled and Osky dropped in shots from the charity
stripe.
“I thought we played three and a half good quarters,” said EBF Coach
Travis Stout. “We had some breakdowns and that offensive putback was big.
“I am really proud of the way this team played. They respond real well to
the runs team makes, we just couldn’t finish.”
DeJong helped keep his team’s momentum with a shot following a free
throw. DeJong was at the line and missed a free throw, but was able to grab
the rebound and put it in the hoop.
“I didn’t think we played well in the first half,” said Oskaloosa coach
Ryan Parker. “I think we walked in her thinking we could compete and be
fine with it. Give the Rockets credit they didn’t allow us to that.
“Coach Stout had his guys prepared. We reverted back in the first half to
last year’s team with one pass, shot, one pass shot. The key was when KiJana standing on the free throw line grabbed the rebound and put it back.”
Jensen finished with two steals and two blocks and Walker was credited
with two assists. EBF pulled down 24 rebounds and was 11-for-16 from
the charity stripe. Oskaloosa was 8-of-14 from the free throw line, most of
which came in the fourth quarter.
