Asymmetric Q&A
In this presentation I will be asking
Richard a series of questions to
understand how he manages to get
down the run so fast.
At the end of the session we will
invite you to ask further questions
“What is the
quickest &
fastest way
to get the
kite up?”

Hoisting
• Get the boat set up for the hoist
– FLAT & STABLE
• Big fast pulls on the halyard
– First pull steady then “explode”
– Don’t knot it
• Sheet on ASAP
“What are the
key points to
get the best
straight line
speed?”

Straight Line Speed
• Flat with neutral helm
– Shoulders back
• Fore & Aft Trim
– Mainsail trim
– Body Position
• Kite trim … find the sweet spot
• Don’t choke the slot with the main
“When it’s

Avoiding the pitch pole
• Some pitch pole examples
• Mainsail trim
• Keeping boat flat
– Heeling boats trip over
• Match the wave angle
“If I do

to get going
again?”

Capsize Recovery
• Avoid the turtle, don’t panic
• Get the kite down ASAP
• Vang & cunningham on hard
– maybe class specific
“When I gybe
I often get
pushed over
after the
boom has
crossed the
boat?”

The gybe
• Get across the boat quickly/early
• Control the kite … no flapping
• Steer gently and
keep flat
“What are the tactics on the run,
how do I know when to go high or
soak down?”

Downwind Tactics
• Characteristics of your boat
– When do you switch to apparent wind sailing?
• Wind pressure … adjust course to achieve
maximum pressure
• Adjust course to keep your lane clear
“When I drop
the kite I often
over run the
mark, how do
I stop that?”

The drop
• Plan the manoeuvre, better sooner than
later
• Oversheet the kite and let it fall behind the
mainsail
• Big explosive pulls on the halyard
This is what it looks like
when it all works!
