Dear Vintage Affaire Guests,
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 34th annual Vintage Affaire! Each year, the proceeds
from this wonderful event benefit the clients of Vista Center for the
Blind and Visually Impaired by providing funds for our services for
individuals threatened by loss of independence due to moderate or
severe vision impairment. Since 1983, Vintage Affaire has contributed
over $8 million, helping to ensure that Vista Center can continue
its important work serving over 2,600 children, adults and family
members in our community each year.
Thank you for your generous and enthusiastic support of Vintage
Affaire 2016 – our 34th one! It means so much to Vista Center –
our clients and their families and our dedicated staff and board.
This wonderful tradition brings to you the premier wines of our participating vintners and delicious appetizers from our area’s best chefs.
We encourage you to bid generously on our spectacular auction items,
both during the silent and live auction events. Your participation
helps us support our mission to empower our clients to embrace life
to the fullest.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Kathy Ladra and Elizabeth
Lucchesi, co-chairs of Vintage Affaire, and to all the other volunteers
who have worked tirelessly for the past twelve months to make this day
a success. We would also like to thank all our underwriters, patrons,
pouring vintners, chefs and the many businesses and individuals
who have contributed to the auction this year. Please take time to
personally thank them as you see them throughout the day.
On behalf of the entire Board of Directors of Vista Center for the
Blind and Visually Impaired, I thank you for your support of the
life-changing work of Vista Center and wish you a most enjoyable day
at the 34th annual Vintage Affaire.
With sincere gratitude,
Susan Rinne Miklos
President, Board of Directors
Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired
10
Very special thank yous go to Kathy Ladra and Elizabeth Lucchesi
for their leadership of Vintage Affaire this year, and to all of the
volunteers who have given their time and talent to make it a big
success. Vista Center is very fortunate to have these dedicated
leaders and volunteers!
We thank our very generous homeowner for again welcoming us to
his gardens in this beautiful Atherton setting. We so appreciate the
generosity of those who care about giving back to the community in
this way.
We are especially grateful to each of you for helping us to fulfill
Vista Center’s mission of empowering individuals who are blind or
visually impaired to embrace life to the fullest!
As we have been since our incorporation in 1945, Vista Center is a
private, nonprofit organization that provides services for individuals
in our community who are blind or visually impaired, regardless
of their ability to pay. We rely on the ongoing support of donors,
volunteers and board members to help make this possible. The
generosity of the bidders and attendees at Vintage Affaire provides
much of our funding. Through your generous participation in
this 34th Vintage Affaire, you are helping us to empower our
clients to fully embrace life by achieving their highest potential for
independence. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Pam Brandin, Executive Director
Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired

We are pleased to honor Fritz Hatton with the
2016 Vintage Affaire Founders Award.
The Founders Award was created to honor
Mona Armistead and Bob Hockey, founders of
Vintage Affaire, and to recognize an individual
who has given extraordinary service to both
Vista Center and Vintage Affaire.
No one exemplifies this more than Fritz Hatton,
the inaugural Vintage Affaire auctioneer
who has returned for 29 of the 34 years. For 20 years, Fritz has
generously donated wine from his own family winery, Arietta, one of
Napa’s top producers of Bordeaux-style blended wines. He has given
advice and contacts whenever needed. He has been an advocate and
cheerleader for Vista Center and Vintage Affaire throughout his 34
years with the event both as auctioneer and friend.
Fritz has extensive experience in the wine auction and wine industry,
beginning with his career in Christie’s Wine Department in 1980.
He was the aucioneer for the first Peninsula Center for the Blind
auction in 1983 and has orchestrated hundreds of other charitable
organization auctions thereafter, most notably the renowned
Napa Valley Wine Auction. He was the first auctioneer to exceed
$1 million for an auction item -- a 6 L 1992 Screaming Eagle
Cabernet Sauvignon, the most expensive bottle ever auctioned. He
worked for both Christie’s and Zachys as a consultant and wine
advisor. He continues to conduct all commercial wine auctions for
Zachys, as well as numerous other charity wine auctions nationwide.
Fritz founded his own winery, Arietta, in 1996 and he and his wife
Caren became sole owners in 2005. Fritz and Caren Hatton reside
in Napa with their two daughters. Apart from family and wine, his
major interest is classical music. Fritz is just as happy playing the
piano as he is encouraging bidders to turn cash into collectible wine.

Fourth in his family to earn the title
of Maître Cuisinier de France (French

for food began at his family’s restaurant in Savoie, France.
Chef Salomon graduated from Thonon les Bains Culinary Academy.
His European tenure includes training under Jo Rostang at his

Le Bateau Ivre in Courchevel. In 1991 he joined The Ritz-Carlton

EXECUTIVE CHEF PETER RUDOLPH
Madera, Rosewood Sand Hill
2825 Sand Hill Road, Menlo Park
650.561.1540
www.maderasandhill.com
Peter Rudolph is the Executive Chef of
Madera, the signature restaurant at Rosewood
Sand Hill in Menlo Park, Rosewood Hotels
and Resorts’ newest addition to its collection of distinctive
properties. Chef Rudolph comes to Madera following two years as
Executive Chef at famed Campton Place in San Francisco, where
he was named one of StarChef.com’s Rising Star Chefs in San
Francisco.
Chef Rudolph became interested in cooking while growing up
in Martinez, an East Bay town near San Francisco, where he was
surrounded by fresh produce that grew in his grandparents’ garden.
Spending time in his grandmother’s kitchen eventually led him
to the California Culinary Academy in San Francisco, where he
graduated in 1995. Shortly thereafter, he began his culinary career as
a pastry chef at San Francisco’s Brasserie Savoy.
Chef Rudolph refocused on savory cooking by making his way into
the kitchens of fine hotels, spending 10 years with The Ritz-Carlton
Hotel Company. His career with the luxury hotel brand began at
the award-winning Dining Room at The Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead in
suburban Atlanta. He eventually returned to the West Coast as Sous
Chef at Jer-Ne in The Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Rey, and as Chef de
Cuisine for Navio at The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay.
At Madera, Chef Rudolph says he is coming back to cooking the
cuisine he is most comfortable with – refined yet approachable food
that honors the many culinary traditions of the Western United
States. The well-crafted, market-driven cuisine with bold flavors
will be centered on a wood-fire grill. Chef Rudolph will highlight
his menu with sustainably harvested and produced seafood and
meats that are paired with the bountiful harvest of the surrounding
farming communities.
Chef Rudolph lives in San Francisco with his wife, Kristie and son,
Logan. In his free time, he is an avid cyclist.

OWNER AND EXECUTIVE CHEF
GUILLAUME BIENAIME
Zola Restaurant
565 Bryant Street, Palo Alto
650.521.0651
www.zolapa.com
Growing up in both France and the
U.S., Chef Owner Guillaume Bienaime
was exposed from a young age to the conviviality brought on by good
food and wine. He first began his journey as an intern at Marché
during his culinary studies at Johnson & Wales University. Upon
graduating, he was hired on as a Sous Chef at the popular Menlo
Park restaurant. It is there that he developed his cooking repertoire,
steadily moving up the ranks to Executive Chef.
After seven years, he moved on to open Portola Kitchen, developing
the concept and menu from scratch. It was shortly after leaving
Portola Kitchen that he discovered the space that would eventually
become Zola. Small, intimate and located in the heart of downtown
Palo Alto, he couldn’t think of a better spot for a neighborhood
gathering place that could hearken to his upbringing and training,
while simultaneously filling a void. He opened Zola in fall of 2014.

CHEF ANTON VOKEL
Palace Café Catering
139 South Murphy Avenue, Sunnyvale
408-774-6111
Being a San Francisco Bay Area native
and raised in Lake Tahoe, Chef Anton
was bitten by the culinary bug early on
working in an apprentice position as Chef de Partie on Lake Tahoe’s
North Shore with legendary Chef Douglas Dale at WOLFDALES.
Chef Anton feels this experience gave him the skills, appreciation,
understanding and eventually the opportunity needed to foster his
career today.
After time spent in San Francisco at the California Culinary
Academy and learning from some of the Bay Area’s most influential
chefs, Vokel was quickly recruited by Graham Rock of Chambers
Landing and Backstage Bistro as Chef, where Graham mentored
Chef Anton in the culture and history behind food.
Since then, Chef Anton has expanded his career working in
different aspects of the food industry, leading kitchens and
consulting with new restaurant and catering company owners.
Now settled in where both his love of food and customer satisfaction
meet, Chef Anton is the Culinary Director working with proprietor
and Palace Café Catering founder and owner Donna Eaton-Busse.
Together they have assembled an impressive team and continually
treat their clients to fresh, consistent, quality driven ideas and
culinary adventures.
As a chef, Vokel strives to make the experience of eating a
memorable one, whether in a daily corporate setting, intimate
dining occasion or large-scale event celebration, his appreciation for
great flavors and his desire to put the client first resonates with each
occasion.

CHEF/OWNER CRAIG STOLL
Delfina Restaurant Group
651 Emerson, Palo Alto
650-353-2208
James Beard Award Winner and
critically acclaimed chef, Craig Stoll,
might be a New York native and a San
Franciscan at heart, but it's his love
and respect for soulful Italian cooking that have come to define
him. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America and
working through some of San Francisco's finest restaurants, Craig
was awarded a scholarship to attend the ICIF cooking school in
Torino, Italy. There it was an externship at Tuscany’s one-Michelinstar restaurant Da Delfina that paved his vision. He returned to
San Francisco and in 1998, along with his wife Annie Stoll, opened
Delfina, a relatively casual 50-seat restaurant located in the still upand-coming Mission District, serving rustic Italian food infused with
San Francisco’s local and sustainable values.
Delfina quickly became a major dining destination, bringing people
from all over to try Craig’s cooking including signature dishes like
the Fresh Grilled Calamari, Insalata di Campo and Spaghetti and
demanding the restaurant's expansion to 85-seats. This ultimately
garnered him a place as one of Food & Wine’s “Best New Chefs”
in 2001 and Best Chef: Pacific from the James Beard Foundation
in 2010. In 2005, the Stoll’s opened their first Pizzeria Delfina next
door, following up with a second location in Pacific Heights in 2009
and two more down on the Peninsula in Burlingame and Palo Alto
in 2014. And with the addition of Locanda, an upscale Roman
Osteria & Bar complete with artisanal cocktails, Craig solidified his
reputation as one of the country’s most dynamic and influential
chefs.

The Super Tuscans are among the most enthralling and diversified
wines in Italy. Highlighted in this varied collection of Italian
beauties are wonderful bottles from Marchesi Antinori, and Tenuta
San Guido. Antinori is one of Italy’s most important and worldrenowned wine producers and his Tignanello is arguably the
bottle that changed Italian wine forever. It is a Super Tuscan cult
wine, along with his Solaia and Guado al Tasso. The Sassicaia
is another of Italy’s trail-blazing Italian wines. The 1997 Solaia,
aging beautifully, is fresh and focused, with red and black fruit,
earth, cassis and plum. The 1986 Tignanello, evolving gracefully,
is nuanced with blackberry, raspberry, tobacco and leather. The
1998 Sassicaia is thick and mouthfilling, showing body, grip and a
lovely flavor of blackberry jam, earth and spice. The 2006 Guado
al Tasso, full, racy and refined, offers toasty vanilla, blackberry,
currant, pepper and dried flowers, with a minerally undertone.
Ruffino is a paragon for Chianti and the 1988 Chianti Classico
Riserva Ducale, still vibrant from its excellent acidity, hints of
assorted red fruits, with resolved tannins. The Barbera d’Alba
Carolina has a big frame and generous fruit, laced with smoke,
licorice, toasted oak and dark cherries. Meleto’s Chianti Classico
Riserva is round and velvety, with violets, cherries, berries, spice,
coffee, mocha and toast. Ceretto’s Chianti Classico is robust, with
good acids and tannins, dark red fruit and a full body. The 1997

40TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE JUDGMENT OF PARIS . . .
IN ATHERTON!
Be transported back to Paris, 1976 and Bottle Shock! Think
luscious food together with award winning wines. Organized by
Steven Spurrier in 1976, French wine judges did a blind tasting,
known as the Judgment of Paris, of both French and California
wine. To the French judges’ chagrin, 1973 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars
Cabernet Sauvignon was rated superior to all the Red Bordeaux and
the 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay (made by Mike Grgich)
was also rated superior to all the white Burgundies. Steven Spurrier
is a British wine expert and champion of French wines who wanted
to promote the expansion of wine production in the U.S. Now
you and 15 friends will be treated to a blind tasting hosted by a
knowledgeable professional. Wines from the winning vineyards will
be paired with delicious treats set in a French ambiance.
Arrange on mutually agreeable date and to be used by June 18, 2017.

for wine auctions’ most expensive wines in the last few years. The
1982 Echezeaux still shows vibrant fruit, good depth, lovely flavor,
a refined texture and excellent color. Rich blackberries, black
cherries, roasted plums, dark chocolate and Indian spice permeate
the nose and palate, carrying through to the lingering finish. The

PINOT AFICIONADOS – DON’T MISS THE COUNCIL’S
HANDCRAFTED WINES!
The Council, an exceptional Pinot Noir, was created in July of
2005 in the caves of Santa Lucia Highlands’ Pisoni Vineyard. The
wine represents the collective efforts of renowned winemakers and
winegrowers, Jim and Bob Varner, Gary Pisoni, Gary Franscioni,
Jerry Yang, Kyle Ditzler and Paul Brown. The wine is a blend of
Pisoni clones from the vineyards of Pisoni, Garys’ and Rosella’s.
The Council’s handcrafted wines show ripe, supple, engaging fruit,
edged with spice, cedar and oak and are complex, concentrated,
balanced and long. The Council decides the final blend and the
Anti-Council works its magic with the rest.
