• We intend to summarize the Brazilian and Latin America
computing progress.
Digital Exclusion in Latin America and in Brazil it is a very
complicated situation due the big Social Differences!
• We are convinced we have to push to build new Networks
facilities to help and acelerate the progress in many regions
of our countries.
• Importing Single Naive Formula from HEP (or what can we do?)
à Collaborate and Cooperate! We will see examples.
Let us talk about HEP, Computing, Networks and our
approach in Brasil.

• By 1983 Leon Lederman started a initiative to create HEP
groups in Latin America. He had a team working in this way
(Thomas Nash, Roy Rubinstein, Paul Grannis, and many
others)
• Their generosities made a revolution in Latin America:
Many countries now have groups collaborating in HEP
experiments at Fermilab, CERN and other Labs.
• Now, Harvey Newman continue this work and push this
development.
Let us go then, to the present situation.

REDECOMEP is an iniciative of Ministery of Science and
Tecnology (MCT) coordinate by RNP which purpose is to
create Metropolitan high speed networks based on its own
Optical Fibers, to serve the research institutions and

We made some progress in the last 3 years
In my view, not enough to open new
opportunities in science in general.
RNP is working very well and understand the
role of Science.
I expect that we do better in the next years
in computing and networking to open
opportunities to our young scientists.
Our T2-HEPGRID Brazil is at 1 Gbps exclusive
on the backbone of RNP at 10 Gbps.

• We already started to produce physics with
T2-HEPGRID BRASIL
• We have already started to have other partner
in Brazil: The Sprace in S. Paulo which also is
producing Monte Carlo Events for Dzero.
• We hope soon to have progress in other Brazilian
Institutions like at UFRJ, CBPF, UFBa, UFRGS
giving continuation to HEPGRID BRASIL.
• We will discuss in our next Summer School
LISHEP –http://www.lishep.uerj.br/ the
proposal for Latin America to build a HEPGRID.

What will be the Phase 6 network?
A new class of high-performance
user

Access to multi Gbps long-distance networking has
enabled a totally new class of users, that deal with highperformance distributed processing
Typical characteristics include:
n massive transfer of data from remote sensors
n remote visualization
n parallel processing using grid technologies
n very high definition image and video transmission
For such users, a typical end to end data channel will be
at least 1 Gbps in capacity (PRESENT SITUATION)
Examples: high-energy physics, astrophysics,
geosciences, telemedicine

Two kinds of traffic: “commodity” (Internet1) and
“cooperation” (Internet2, or Research and
Education)
Except for RedCLARA, all current connections are
to the USA:
RNP operates:
2 * 155 (Rio) + 45 Mbps (SP) commodity to Miami
n 155 Mbps cooperation via RedCLARA (SP) to LA &
Europe
