It was a really great start to our service. I should have asked him the follow up question “Why aren’t more people here?” I think he would have given the same answer, “I don’t know!” Samuel has a great time at church: he is loved, accepted, occupied and could find yourself ‘belonging’ like Samuel, to a group that accepts him. Pilning Church folk would welcome you with open arms! There is something for everyone, and it keeps villages alive! I am reminded of an old story. Fred was getting desperate, he needed a big win. “Oh Lord” prayed Fred “please let me win the lottery” and the Lord spoke to Fred and said “Fred, Fred, first you have to get off your backside and buy a ticket!” Roy May your New Year be full of nice surprises! 3 Comment Rubbish I opened my front door this morning and gazed in horror. My front lawn (such as it is) was covered with the evidence of the last few meals we have had this week by way of wrappings. I am pretty good at recycling; in fact I have been doing it long before it was acceptable to do it. People used to think I was crazy...don’t answer that! Anyway, there it all was, strewn all over the place. My first thought was the fox and then common sense told me that the fox can’t chew through dustbins so I look a bit closer and the evidence was clear. My husband is pretty bad at shutting the lids on the bins, although he denies it, and on this occasion he had dropped the lid very loosely and a strong gust of wind had opened it up and all the stuff lying on the top and in various places in the bin had escaped, lifted by the wind into my garden. I rushed round picking it all up and then went to have my breakfast, taking with me a bit of a smell. I couldn’t figure out where it came from until I realised it was my hands, the smell was my rubbish, so I washed my hands and while I was doing this the following thoughts came to me. The Spirit of God is rather like that wind, in fact at Pentecost it came down with a flame as well. Psalm 139 tells us that we can’t run from God, he will find us and when he/she does there will be this sudden surge and out will come all the nasty things we have been popping into the bin of our mind, and possibly our heart and we will get a clean slate. It may be a messy, smelly process but when we let Christ into our lives we become like the Baby that will have been born by the time you read this, clean and sin free. That’s the gift of God and we can take it or leave it, but, trust me, I took it and it’s wonderful to feel that the rubbish, the really bad, stinking stuff is gone and I feel clean. That’s not to say I shan’t collect some more over the weeks, days ahead, but every so often that wind comes, the love of God and I feel free again. Try it. Why not make a New Year Resolution to find out more about God’s love for us? We are looking for a Volunteer to act as MINUTE TAKER at our monthly church council meetings. If you are interested in helping please contact the Churchwarden Jonathan Edwardes 01454 632646 [email protected] 9 Pilning & Severn Beach Parish Council The Council met on Monday 7th December 2015 at Severn Beach School, Severn Beach at 7pm as per the published agenda for a meeting of the Parish Council. Following the recent resignation of Sarah Smith and following a period of due notice the Parish Council co-opted Ian Roberts of Little Green Lane, Severn Beach. Ian is currently Chairman of the Pilning Village Hall management committee. COVER STORY I really like photo's of our local area, buildings, bridges, sunsets etc, and when PETE THOMAS gave me this one l thought "why not". Yes, it is industrial, but that provides work for people, and it is a very futuristic building - a very up to date rubbish tip! No doubt it is environmentally friendly, probably it incinerates rubbish and turns it into electricity or something useful. Wouldn't it be nice to know? I do worry about that whopping great stack, it reminds me of the 'yellow peril stack 'that lCl used to have on this site - poisonous vapour streaking the sky. So, I sent SITA, the owners, an email, offering them some free publicity to tell our villagers what they are doing. I have to report that, for the second contact I have made with them I have had no reply. l just hope that the 'Dear Editor’ column in this magazine won't be the forum for complaints about pollution, smells, flies and noise once it’s up and running. 10 Editor The meeting heard from Becky Cooper regarding a new defibrillator for the Parish and it was agreed to fund the service charge of a new ‘smart’ cabinet once installed along with the service charge for the existing two cabinets. We are still looking for a willing volunteer - can you help? The Parish Council and Severn Beach Village Hall Committee are looking for a willing volunteer to assist in seeking grants for projects in the Parish. Support will be given but it needs someone who has the time to give to this type of work. If you are interested, please contact the Clerk in the first instance. The next Parish Council meeting will take place on Monday 4th January 2016 at Pilning Village Hall, Pilning. If you are interested in being added to the mailing list to receive local information from time to time, please contact the clerk. Large steel gates erected, caravans, commercial vehicles and a JCB coming onto land. Public Health Funerals These have increased by 30% recently and increased council budgets. The reasons may be the demographic curve and lack of assets by the deceased. Deaths from Class A Drug Addition This has increased from 169 to 247 this year. Hover Boards Some of these £500 presents have been found to be fake and 12 have unsafe electrical chargers. Three have caused house fires. ERP (Energy Recovery Plant) on the A403 by the new small roundabout going towards Avonmouth. This incinerator construction is on schedule for completion and phased commissioning from April 2016 onwards. The rail link will be commissioned at a later date. Mobile Phone Coverage The RAC mentioned that 2% of all roads do not have 2G coverage and drivers need to be aware of this. Free Plastic Bags Tesco have reported an 80% reduction in supplying these supermarket bags since October. Let’s hope we can reduce the waste ones in our environment. Station Road, Pilning A Street light opposite Shaymoor Lane is continually on. Yours sincerely, Robert C. Griffin Councillor for Pilning & Severn Beach. Start the New Year with a resolution to help others in your community We are contacted regularly by groups and organisations that are seeking to recruit volunteers from all walks of life and time available. These opportunities vary between clerical work, working with the disabled or vulnerable adults in the community, fundraising and marketing, counselling and emotional support, shop work, driving, working in local schools and much more. The majority of these organisations would be unable to survive, and valuable community services would be lost, if volunteers were not to be found. Now that Christmas is just a happy memory, getting out and about in your local area and helping others less fortunate than yourselves is a good way of banishing those winter blues. Finding ways to occupy your time, which are both enjoyable and worthwhile, can instantly make you feel that you are making a valuable contribution to your community. There are many reasons that people give for volunteering. For some, volunteering can be a route to employment, or a chance to try something new which may lead to a career change. For others, volunteering appeals because of its social benefits, meeting new people and making new friends. On top of this, many people volunteer for a variety of other reasons, a desire to make a difference to the lives of others, feeling valued, having quality time away from work or a busy lifestyle. Thornbury Volunteer Centre can provide you with information and support on volunteering opportunities in the local area which best suit your needs, skills and time available, whilst making sure that you find volunteering an enjoyable and worthwhile experience. Age, gender or disability is not a barrier to volunteering. Anyone, who is able to spare some time, from an hour a week to once a month or just on a one-off basis, would be warmly welcomed by someone in the community. Volunteering is a valuable experience that benefits all parties. If you would like to find out more please contact Thornbury Volunteer Centre on 01454 413392; email mail@volunteer‐ thornbury.co.uk ; visit our website on www.volunteer‐thornbury.co.uk; follow us on twitter: @thornburyvc or Facebook: thornburyvolunteers. Alternatively, call into the office at Thornbury Town Hall between 10.30am‐12 noon Monday to Friday. We look forward to meeting you. 13 samewaywewillbe35%lessactiveby2030. New Year – New You? In the article it states that we are, as a nation, declining in the amount of regular exercise we do and that she and all health professionals need to embark on a policy of telling patients to increase the amount of regular exercise they do. We are 20% less active than in the 60’s and if we keep going the same way we will be 35% less active by 2030. Physical inactivity is one of the top ten causes of UK ill health, responsible for 1 in 6 deaths but if we introduce 30 minutes of exercise (that raises our heart rate) 3 to 5 times per week, there is powerful evidence that this type of physical activity is a ‘miracle cure’ capable of preventing and managing over 20 long term conditions. It goes on to say that one in four people would be more active if they were told to do it by their GP – I’d like to save you 14 15 Easter Compton Village Calendar 2016 It’s not just a fantastic calendar, it’s a keepsake of our fabulous village showing images both old and new….. Not true, just a lot of admiration for the ‘weaker sex’ showing us how wrong we were. THE SODBURY SLOG This is a multi terrain challenge over 9.8 country miles run through fields, ditches, mud baths, sheep dips & pig troughs. The race always coincides with Remembrance Sunday with the playing of the last post & 2 minute silence before the race. I have run this race several times before & love it for the challenge & camaraderie, everyone helps one another out of the mud & sometimes to find lost trainers. The race organisers didn’t let us down this year, there was plenty of mud, water & cow slurry & even an encounter with some worried cows on the common. The weather was perfect for running and I finished in a respectable time of 1hr.52min. My trainers were sent to the graveyard & I can’t wait until next year! My next race is the Christmas cracker which is run along the beach in Westonsuper-Mare and around the town where I wear a blinged up tutu with lots of tinsel. 16 Maggie Gibbs 17 NEWS FROM ST PETER’S PRIMARY SCHOOL PARENT WORKSHOP The school held the first of what we hope will be a number of parent workshops and meetings over the course of the school year. We thought our highlight of the month was an individual reply to the letter that we sent to Her Majesty the Queen. The Queens lady in waiting thanked us for our letter and for our racing corgis and thought we seemed to have rather a lot of fun! (We do) Each year the girls choose an animal to adopt and this year they have chosen an otter from Secret World Wildlife Hospital. The girls all get a certificate and take it in turns to take the mascot home for a week. We started this tradition when in Dec 2011 we were talking about a badly neglected foal that was abandoned in a very poor state and the girls asked could they do anything to help. Our third highlight came with we received our certificates from Bristol Children’s Hospital for the money the girls raised while taking part in the Shaun the Sheep trail. And then we had a fourth! With our ever popular Campfire Challenge badge. To earn the badge the girls need to learn how to light a match safely, learn some first aid, play some campfire games, decorate a mug, make a camp blanket, make smores*, (smores are toasted marshmallows squashed between two chocolate biscuits) drink hot chocolate and sing a few songs around a real campfire. When the big day came the weather was kind to us and with the help of Abigail & dad, Gareth Harris, it all went off without a hitch. Well done to Lucy, Alex, Lexie & Lily who all made their promise outside by the campfire. And a special well done to Dot, who knew what to do when granny had a small fire at home! We also were lucky enough to meet Santa on his special steam train at Bitton! He sent the girls’ postcards saying how much he was looking forward to meeting them and on the day he give them all gift. Unfortunately I have had a long time of illness, and this coupled with the council work being a lot more than I originally understood it to be, has meant that I cannot fulfil my role as a councillor, (and certainly not serve this parish as I would have hoped to). EasterComptonNHWDecember2015 Mostly I want to thank everybody in the community who supported me, both in the Christmasiscoming elections as well as during my time on the council. This traditional pantomime of the famous Oriental rags to riches tale has jokes galore, provides ample opportunity for audience participation, slapstick and a vibrant mix of singing and dancing - a perfect pick you up for mid-February, suitable for all ages. The refreshingly new script, written by Alan P. Frayn, is a laugh-a-minute and adds another dimension to the great panto classic. Join Aladdin as he falls in love with the beautiful Princess, seeks out his fortune and returns to claim her hand in marriage. Along the way, Aladdin will shirk from his duties in the laundry, hide from a dodgy pair of policemen, overcome the trickery of a deceitful “Uncle” and benefit from the powers of the genie of the lamp. When all seems lost, along comes the good Spirit to right all wrongs, ensuring a happy ending. Performances start at 7.30pm nightly and there will also be matinees at 2.30 pm on the Friday and Saturday. Tickets are bookable online at www.tmtg.org.uk. £12 Adults, £10 Concessions and a family ticket for 4 costs £36. Group discounts of 10% can be arranged via our Box Office for 10+ seats. Reception and Key Stage One performed ‘A Wriggly Nativity’ to proud parents and friends while Key Stage Two joined in with the singing. The pupils in the Key Stage One choir were invited to AstraZeneca again this year. They sang carols for the employees at their Christmas party and enjoyed a yummy buffet lunch! It was another lovely occasion and we are very grateful to AstraZeneca for their kind donation of 3 more iPads. The choir also went next door to the Village Hall and sang carols for the over50s club and were happy to help them eat their tea afterwards too! Years 4, 5 and 6 went to the South Gloucestershire Schools Carol Service at Clifton Cathedral. This is always a lovely festive occasion, made even more special with the addition of a live donkey and Baby Jesus! The Everyman Theatre came into school and each class took part in a drama workshop with them. The Friends organised the Christmas Fayre which was very well attended and helped raise much-needed funds for the school. Thank you to those of you who came and supported us. Term 2 was nicely rounded off with Christmas lunch, parties and an end of term disco. On behalf of the staff and pupils, we hope you all had a Happy Christmas and wish you a peaceful New Year.
