Hello OTAP members and friends,
April was a busy month. Patricia and I attended the Los Lunas Health fair and it was a success . Primetime
Monthly magazine had an article about Transplantation featuring our own Evelyn Rivera. I urge everyone to
get a copy and read the article.
The 6th Annual Organ Donor Awareness walk was well attended and raised over $500 for the “Gift of Life
scholarship“.
Thanks to Kip Rainbird NMDS Organ Recovery Coordinator at UNM Hospital for his presentation .
Congratulations to this years Scholarship winners!
The scholarship winners this year were chosen and the Personal Essay written by Michael Snow from Sandia Prep was awarded a $1000.00 Scholarship.
The Informative essay was written by Marcella Chavez from Los Lunas High school was awarded a
$1000.00 Scholarship.
Our Final Scholarship of $500.00 was awarded to Shaye Nelson from Gateway Christian School in Roswell
for a Personal Essay .

Los Alamos County Council Proclaims April ‘Donate Life Month’

CATHY WALTERS - HEART TRANSPLANT RECIPIENT
I was incredibly blessed in June, 2013 when I received the Gift of Life and given a new heart! My
surgery took place at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. I had been diagnosed with a rare and progressive heart condition which would have ultimately rendered my heart useless. Not
only did I receive a perfectly matched heart from a most generous donor and her family, I didn't
even have to wait very long to receive it (one week on the National Waiting List!)
Thanks to this miracle, I literally have a new life! Instead of being depressed and thinking I had
no future, I now look forward and am grateful for every new day. I have returned to many former
activities, being independent, traveling and helping others. One of my passions is now increasing
the awareness of the need of more donors and promoting organ, eye and tissue donation and
transplantation. I am so looking forward to my first Transplant Games of America experience in
Cleveland this June! I hope to gain more knowledge that will help me in my quest to "pay back"
and further the cause!
The Games will also give me the chance to celebrate with other transplant recipients and their
families, as well as to pay tribute to all the donors and their families. It is only through their generosity that life-saving and life-restoring transplants can take place. They are the true heroes!

IMPACT OF ZIKA VIRUS ON ORGAN DONATION & TRANSPLANTATION
Background:
· Zika is a flavivirus transmitted primarily by infected mosquitoes of the Aedes
species which also spread Chikungunya and dengue
· Alert issued in May 2015 regarding first confirmed case in Brazil
· Previously reported in tropical Africa, Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands
· Now reported in more than 20 countries and territories
· Local transmission in U.S. had been limited to Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin
Islands
The U.S. does have the mosquito species that can spread the Zika virus after biting an infected
person and the virus can be transmitted sexually. The number of cases of Zika infection will likely
increase in the U.S. due to travel to areas experiencing recent outbreaks. The CDC states that,
though these may result in a local spread of the virus in the U.S., it is unlikely that the mainland
U.S. will experience a widespread transmission of Zika.

Asymptomatic in 80% of infected people, according to the CDC
Most common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain or conjunctivitis; possible
muscle pain or headache
Incubation period of two to seven days
Resolution of symptoms typically within a week; hospitalization or death are rare
Maternal infections during pregnancy confirmed in several infants born with
microcephaly in Brazil; knowledge of the link between the two is evolving
Cases of Guillain-Barre syndrome reported following suspected Zika infection;
relationship of Zika and Guillain-Barre unknown
No vaccine nor treatment currently available

The OPTN/UNOS Ad Hoc Disease Transmission Advisory Committee (DTAC), the American
Society of Transplantation (AST), and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons (ASTS)
recommend:
A focus on recent travel history, epidemiological risk factors, and recent
symptoms; highlight information during organ offers
Donation to pregnant or child-bearing age women be deferred from deceased
donors if there is a history of travel to a Zika-endemic area within 28 days’ prior
to donation
Donation from living donors with Zika infection be deferred where possible
Risk of donor-derived infection be weighed against benefit of transplantation
Transplant centers advise standard travel precautions to pre–and post-transplant
patients considering travel to a Zika-endemic area; patients who are pregnant or
trying to become pregnant advised to follow CDC travel guidance. The Alliance grants permission for the
