Action Packed: A Screening
of End of Watch in the Hamptons
th
By: Chloe Malle/ Monday, August 20 2012
Sheepish and unshaven, Jake Gyllenhaal greeted guests at Sunday evening’s
screening of his new film, End of Watch, in which he not only stars but also executiveproduced. Fondly remembering the six months spent shooting the action drama, about
two young LAPD officers who unwittingly become embroiled in a drug cartel in South
Central Los Angeles, Gyllenhaal stated, “The neighborhoods where we shot couldn’t be
more different than where we are right now,” to the crowd seated inside the intimate
screening room at the private home in Wainscott.
Before the film started, early arrivals sampled the hors d’oeuvres buffet of pigs-in-ablanket, spring rolls, and spanakopita. Max Osterweis and Kate Foley chatted with
Stephanie LaCava and Brian Weiss while hostess Gwyneth Paltrow looked end-ofAugust-appropriate with beach-mussed hair and a tie-dye shift dress at the event, which
was presented in part by Samsung Galaxy SIII. Standing at the foot of the path leading
into the house, she sipped a flute of champagne and welcomed guests including Calvin
Klein, Donna Karan, Rufus Wainwright, Molly Sims, and Katie Lee. Chris Martin lingered
near his wife and caught up with cohosts Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld.
Once the credits rolled, guests filtered up the plushly carpeted steps of the screening
room: Alexander and Lisa Immordino Vreeland stopped to say hello to Bruce Weber
and Nan Bush who were seated with cohosts Ingrid Sischy and Sandra Brant. The more
conspicuous Brants in attendance were, of course, Peter, Jr., and Harry, who arrived
with a group of friends and proceeded to hold court. A bottleneck leading out of the
basement screening room simply provided more opportunity for post-movie socializing.
One woman in floral chiffon turned to her husband and sighed happily, “That was intense.” So were the pineapple cocktails waiting for guests on trays at the exit.

The couple appeared happy and relaxed on Sunday as they mingled with guests at

Wainwright and Weisborth have been engaged since November 2010, and in February

According to the New York Daily News, they will tie the knot Thursday at Wainwright's

Talk turned to run-ins with police after a screening of Jake Gyllenhaal’s cop flick “End of
Watch” in East Hampton. Jerry Seinfeld told us his wife recently was stopped, and she
admitted speeding. “He was so touched by my willingness to admit wrongdoing, he told
me to have a good day,” Jessica said. “He even called me ‘young lady.’ ” Harry Brant,
son of Stephanie Seymour and Peter Brant, said at the Hollywood Reporter-Samsung
Galaxy SIII screening that he almost got arrested boating in Versailles: “The security
man told me I couldn’t stand up on my boat, and he pulled me aside — as close as I’ve
gotten to a car chase.” Gyllenhaal mingled with Molly Sims and Donna Karan.

THE HAMPTONS HAD its fair share of celebrity sleepovers Sunday night. Jake
Gyllenhaal helicoptered in for a screening of his new film, “End of Watch,” at Goose
Creek, the Wainscott home that features an exact replica of the Ziegfeld Theater in New
York. But the film’s star needed a place to crash for the night. Thankfully, a source tells
us Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld offered Gyllenhaal a bed in their $32 million, 12-acre
waterfront East Hampton abode. The comedian and the action film star, it turns out, are
actually quite chummy, and spent the prescreening cocktail reception hanging with the
Seinfelds’ daughter, Sascha. Also lodging guests for the night was Gwyneth Paltrow,
who attended the screening with husband Chris Martin. The couple hobnobbed with
friends at the party, but had to split before the lights went down in the theater since they
had 14 guests staying at their $5.4 million Amagansett cottage.

So there was something a little strange about this modest-size film having a private
screening on Sunday night at a multimillion-dollar East Hampton estate called Goose
Creek. Not to mention the crowd, which included Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband,
Chris Martin; Jerry Seinfeld and his wife, Jessica; the magazine editors Ingrid Sischy
and Sandra Brant; and the photographer Bruce Weber.
East Hampton, meet South Central.
“It’s full of irony,” Mr. Gyllenhaal acknowledged, as he made the rounds on a grassy
area near the driveway while guests sipped Champagne.
“You kind of have to pinch yourself,” he said. “To think that we would be taking a nice
car to the Hamptons for a screening with some of the most powerful people around.”
His voice trailed off.
The event even had corporate sponsorship. Inside the cream-colored 25,000-squarefoot, eight-bedroom house, which is owned by Bryan Bantry (an agent to fashion
photographers and hairstylists), representatives from Samsung were showing off a new
touch-screen phone called the Galaxy S III, which was given to each of the attendees at
the end of the evening. Issues of the Hollywood Reporter, which also paid for the event,
abounded.
Around 7 p.m., guests (who also included Sandy Gallin, the former manager for Michael
Jackson; Donna Karan; Beth Ostrosky Stern, Howard Stern’s wife; and Amanda Ross of
Departures magazine) marched inside, descended a staircase and filed into a 110-seat
auditorium with green velvet seats.
Many viewers had difficulty watching some of the film’s more violent moments. “I was
really on the edge of my seat,” Ms. Ross said. “The violence was tough.”
At one point, Mr. Weber seemed to be hiding his head in his hands. “I’m just a
photographer,” said Mr. Weber, who had recently visited South Central Los Angeles to
photograph Mark Bradford, an artist there. “My life’s real simple compared to this.”
Ms. Karan also found it tough to watch (“It was amazing, if you could get through it”), but
it also raised some fashion questions for her. She found Mr. Gyllenhaal and asked him
why police officers don’t wear bulletproof turtlenecks.
“Why should you have your neck exposed?” she asked. “I’ve decided this. You’re going
to have a whole new uniform."
“L.A.P.D. fashion by Donna Karan,” said a handler for Mr. Gyllenhaal standing nearby.
A bar was set up on the porch, with heaps of chips and guacamole. The actor Bob
Balaban and his wife, Lynn Grossman, were milling about with the film’s producer, John
Lesher.
“What’s the budget?” Ms. Grossman asked.
“Seven million dollars,” Mr. Lesher said, adding that this was the hardest movie he’d
ever made.
“Well, it’s really impressive,” Ms. Grossman said. “It’s hard to cover an area like this and
make it seem fresh, but it does it. I hope it gets consideration.”

Look at dem legs!
Gwyneth Paltrow attended a private screening of her pal Jake Gyllenhaal's movie End
of Watch in The Hamptons, New York, where she showed off her beautiful slender legs
on the carpet over the weekend.
Wearing a mini summer dress and brown sandals, Gwynnie looked casual, but of
course, chic as she and Jakey-Poo posed for pics together.
Jake looked handsome in his suit jacket and dark jeans, but we can't take our eyes off
of Gwyneth's sweet summer look. It's like a beautiful mermaid is using her lovely sea
legs to grace us with her presence.
Is Gwyneth a little too casual? Sure, but it's the Hamptons and, well, it's Gwyneth. No
complaints here!

The F-word flies by fast, furious and often from cops and criminals in Jake Gyllenhaal's
new movie End of Watch, now on its way to the Toronto Film Festival. At a special
preview screening at Bryan Bantry's Goose Creek on Sunday night, the dreamy-eyed
star prepared the audience for extreme violence, and for another F-word: friendship.
With more edge than the typical police procedural, the film left viewers -- including hosts
Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ingrid Sischy and Sandra Brant, and
many guests: Bruce Weber, Bob Balaban, Chris Martin, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein,
Katie Lee, and Beth Ostrosky Stern -- getting over the movie's devastating end with
champagne and dessert.
Everything is up close and personal, from scenes of what drug cartels do with their
stash and those who cross them, to frantic users who want to silence their kids, to the
families of these good cops both in the LAPD, and at home, to the front seat of the
squad car where Gyllenhaal's Brian Taylor in shaved head, and his Mexican partner
Michel Zavala (Michael Pena) muse about marriage, their lives and loves in a tight
camera frame capturing every facial nuance, and signaling End of Watch as one of best
buddy movies since Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, if more gruesome.
On the job, both wear HD cameras, so their work answering calls and following their
own crime-solving hunches is recorded. The result is jarringly real, the footage from
surveillance cameras, gang members, and others part of the story, the camera as thirdperson omniscient narrator seeming to disappear. This makes for riveting filmmaking,
giving the action an illusion of authenticity, and subjectivity. While much is owed to
Michael Pena's fresh and biting script and direction, the actors added some bits too,
said Gyllenhaal of the five months of preparation and 22 shooting days with much time
spent driving around with South Central L.A.'s cops. For example, before Brian gets
serious with his girlfriend Janet (an excellent Anna Kendrick), the guys adlibbed with
Michael razzing him about marrying a Mexican girl like his wife, Gabby (a fine Natalie
Martinez), who only wants babies. They laugh, cajole, and show bravery and loyalty,
beyond what you may think necessary or prudent. Cody Horn and America Ferrera play
another fierce and fragile cop team who should have a movie written around them.
The Hollywood Reporter and Samsung Galaxy SIII sponsored the Peggy Siegal
Hamptons screening; each guest received a gift: an invitation for a free phone and to
sample their new white glove service. To attend and promote his film, Gyllenhaal left the
dress rehearsal for his American stage debut in Nick Payne's If There Is I Haven't
Found It Yet, to begin previews in New York next week. Referring to his shiny full head
of hair, he smiled wide, "It does grow back."

After the screening, guests enjoyed dessert and were gifted with a certificate for a

Producer John Lesher said while filming the movie which was shot last summer in some
of the roughest parts of LA, they grew to love the area and called it home by the end of
filming. They received lots of love from neighborhood where it was shot. While
developing the script a year a and a half ago they met Gyllenhaal and since that he has
been a brother on film.
Gyllenhaal who is also the executive producer on the movie is extremely proud of how it
turned out. One of the biggests aspects of the movie is the friendship between him and
co-star Michael Peña. Gyllenhaal stated, "The heart of the movie is relationships and
the friendship forged between me and Michael Peña over the period of time we spent
our lives together is very meaningful to me". The relationship betweeen Gyllenhaal and
Peña is extremely moving and shows the bond police officers have with their partners.

Jake Gyllenhaal loved his wardrobe in “End of Watch.” “There’s nothing like having the
honor of putting on a police uniform,” he told Flash at a private screening in the
Hamptons. “It’s a ‘Bat suit’ in a way.”
The über-brutal cop drama co-stars Michael Peña as a fellow guts-and-glory patrolman.
Gyllenhaal spent five months researching on the streets of South Central L.A.,
shadowing cops, attending real gangsters’ house parties and not getting much sleep.
“After the first ride-along,” he confessed, “I saw someone killed in front of me. And then
driving to a nice home 20 minutes away was quite a head trip.”
The Samsung Hollywood Reporter event had the crowd riveted but gasping at the
unending violence. And if they need to call a cop, Samsung gave everyone in the
audience a new Galaxy III phone. Among them were Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld,
Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin, Calvin Klein and Beth Ostrosky Stern, who called it
“the best cop movie I’ve ever seen. I need a Valium to get down from that!” That’s a 104.

Driving rain put a crimp in some of the fun this weekend on the East End.
Bridgehampton Polo was rained out for the fourth time this summer. Soggy fields are a
danger to pricey polo ponies. The 64th Annual Artists & Writers Charity Softball Game
was also rained out. (It might have turned into a wet T-shirt contest.) Even the fourth
annual Ferrari Rally has been postponed until 2013. Hey, even speedways cancel due
to rain. Smooth tread racing tires can be deadly when wet.
End of Watch and Hamptons Houseguests
But the main event on a rainy weekend, besides Bettina Zilkha’s Sunday night
clambake at Cryder Beach in Southampton, was The Peggy Siegal Company’s End of
Watch screening at Goose Creek, hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow (who had 14
houseguests that weekend; and you think you’ve got a full house). Other hosts included
Jessica and Jerry Seinfeld (who had their buddy Jake Gyllenhaal as a houseguest), The
Hollywood Reporter, and Samsung Galaxy SIII. The Seinfelds had a surprise visit from
their daughter, Sasha, at the event, who had just returned from a trip with a friend’s
family to Croatia.
Also attending: Molly Sims; Rufus Wainwright, who will wed his fiancé, designer Jorn

In the film, Gyllenhaal plays a young police officer up against the gangs of South

Gwyneth Paltrow and Jake Gyllenhaal met up for a screening of his new movie, End of

who was also there with her husband, Jerry. Gwyneth and Jake have been friends for

Jake is rocking quite the beard these days, though he might have to lose it for his next
big role. Jake is teaming up with the duo behind Half Nelson, which earned Ryan

Jake will be next in line for an Oscar nod.

With friend like these: Gwyneth Paltrow hosted a screening of pal Jake Gyllenhaal's new movie in East
Hampton tonight
Gwyneth Paltrow hosted a star-studded showing of Jake Gyllenhaal’s new movie End of
Watch in glitzy East Hampton tonight.
Wearing a patterned mini-dress that showed off her toned legs, and sandals, the
mother-of-two, who starred with Jake in the 2005 film Proof, kept her face free of makeup and her hair loose.
Looking tanned and healthy, she posed alongside a dapper-looking Gyllenhaal, 31, who
sported a blue blazer, jeans and a full beard.
The cop crime drama tells the story of two LAPD officers, Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña,
who are marked for death after confiscating a small cache of money and firearms from
the members of a notorious cartel.
Described as a powerful story of family, honour and courage, the action unfolds entirely
through footage from the handheld HD cameras of the police officers, gang members,
surveillance cameras, and citizens caught in the line of fire giving the story a gripping,
first-person immediacy.
The film aims to create a riveting portrait of the city's most dangerous corners, the cops
who risk their lives there every day, and the price they and their families are forced to
pay.

private showing
In a recent interview Gyllenhaal told Details magazine there was extreme preparation
required for the film: 'Five months for 22-day shoots.
'Three nights a week in ride-alongs with cops. Fight training every morning at Kenpo
Karate Dojo, and I got the s**t kicked out of me.'
'Then the shooting range, shooting past each other’s heads, with live ammo,' he
continued.
'There’s a simulated fire in the movie, but Dave (director David Ayer) wanted us to feel
what that’s like, so he had us do a controlled burn…
'A Saturday where me and Michael Pena drive down to Orange County, dressed like
firemen head-to-toe, and suddenly we’re there just sitting in the middle of a burning
building.'

Closing out the weekend with a special press function for his new film, Jake Gyllenhaal
took over the spotlight at a private screening of "'End of Watch" in East Hampton, New
York on Sunday (August 19).
The handsome 31-year-old actor suited up as he was joined by actress Gwyneth
Paltrow for the Goose Creek held event sponsored by The Hollywood Reporter and
Samsung Galaxy SIII .
Also turning up for the swanky east coast night of cinema were new mom Molly Sims,
along with Katie Lee, Beth Ostrosky Stern and Jerry Seinfeld with his lovely wife,
Jessica.
As for Jake's upcoming motion picture, an official synopsis describes it as "a powerful
story of family, friendship, love, honor and courage." The writeup adds, "‘End of Watch’
stars Gyllenhaal and Peña as young Los Angeles police officers Taylor and Zavala as
they patrol the city’s meanest streets of south central Los Angeles. Giving the story a
gripping, first-person immediacy, the action unfolds entirely through footage from the
handheld HD cameras of the police officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, and
citizens caught in the line of fire to create a riveting portrait of the city's most dangerous
corners, the cops who risk their lives there every day, and the price they and their
families are forced to pay.”
The forthcoming flick is due to hit theaters on September 28th and also stars Michael
Pena, Anna Kendrick, Frank Gillo and America Ferrera.

Damn it, Gwyneth Paltrow. There you go again, showing on that gazelle-like figure in a mini and sandals,
a combination that wouldn’t look nearly as good on other women. How do you do it? You GOOP, don’t
you?
Last night (August 19th), Paltrow arrived at The Hollywood Reporter and Samsung Galaxy SIII’s private
screening of End of Watch at Goose Creek in East Hampton, New York. The Oscar winner posed for
photographs with Jake Gyllenhaal, who stars in the LAPD drama.
Paltrow recently admitted that she may not procreate further with husband Chris Martin.
“I don’t know if I can go back to diapers,” she said, according to the Daily Mail. ”I don’t think so. I would
love to, but I sort of feel like I don’t know if I can go back to diapers and things like that. I’m so past that, I
think I may have missed the window.
I think if maybe when Moses was three, I would have done it, or four even, but now he’s six and such a
guy, I feel like I’m out of the baby phase.”
“If it happens, it happens,” she added.

Los Angeles who is marked for death after a routine traffic stop involving a criminal cartel.

Nice to read that good friend Rufus Wainwright along with his partner Jorn Weisbrodt
were there as well (congrats to the happy couple who are about to tie the knot!)

The crime drama co-stars Michael Pena and focuses on two police officers marked for
death by a mob cartel.
Howard Stern took a pass on the exclusive red carpet event. He has a long week ahead
of him with three live satellite radio broadcasts and two nights of live "America's Got
Talent" TV broadcasts and needs his beauty sleep.
"End of Watch" premieres in theaters on September 21, 2012, strategically placed for
Oscars consideration.

Leave it to Gwyneth Paltrow to pull off no-makeup, no-handbag, no-frills Summer style
at a Hamptons film premiere. Yesterday the actress and full-fledged style pro proved
that she can rock the whole natural-beauty thing with as much confidence as she can
pull off a Prada mini at the Met Gala. It all comes down to one easy piece: a statement
print teal minidress with a city-meets-surfer-girl feel. Gwyneth perfected the vibe with
just a couple of additions, throwing on a chunky chain bracelet, watch, and necklace,
then finishing with simple, fuss-free sandals in place of any high-wattage heels. Couple
that with waves that actually look like Gwyneth may have come straight from a day at
the beach, and this may just be the coolest red-carpet arrival for a while — and can
easily re-create in readiness for Spring.
