WWW.BESTVERSIONMEDIA.COM t s e f r e t W in 2015 Photo by Jonah Westrich, Isthmus Media Group, LLC MARCH 2015 VILLAGE ADMINISTRATOR'S CORNER AS WINTER BEGINS to subside and spring approaches, the con- struction season is beginning. For the village, we are NOT anticipating any extensive infrastructure or road projects for 2015. You may see some maintenance around the village and some finish work from last years’ projects being completed. We are however, expecting the development at 601 N Sherman Avenue to begin sometime later this spring or early summer. Currently, there are no proposals for any type of development at the corner of Roxbury and Sherman Avenue. The All Village Garage Sale date has been set for Saturday, May 16. The date is earlier this year to make sure we are not in conflict with other village events in early June, such as, Bocce, the Village Graduation party, or swim meets for the MBCC Swim Team. This date will be the weekend before Memorial Day weekend. After this year’s sale, we will take feedback to see how that weekend worked for families. Also, look forward to an article in a future newsletter regarding a traffic pattern change for Kensington Drive and Woodland Circle for the Garage Sale. Many families will be heading out of town on vacation during Spring Break. That is a good time to make sure that you have updated information for your Vacation Notice. Did you know that the village maintains spare keys at the Village Center? You may want to make sure that your key is up to date and that the registration form on who can access your key is still current. Finally, the 2015 Village Directory was recently delivered to your home. If for some reason your home did not get a copy, contact the Village Office. This Village Directory is one of the most attractive directories we have ever seen. Rene Dopkins who leads that project, does a fantastic job in maintaining the data that goes inside the Directory and helping to create a beautiful cover that makes it so attractive. If you have updates to your data, be sure to get in touch with Rene who will make any changes that you seek. Seeing your first flower of the season start to bloom and hearing the sounds of thunderstorms are just a few of the simple pleasures of the beginning spring. Of course, the best part of spring is knowing what is to come. After experiencing months of harsh temperatures, it’s funny how it always feels like summer when we start seeing temperatures in the 50s or 60s. Us “Wisconsinites” really look forward to the few months of summer weather we get. We truly cherish every nice, sunny day. So, it’s safe to say most of us are happy it’s almost springtime. It’s also when we start to see people out and about, enjoying the outdoors. You may meet some new neighbors you didn’t know just moved into the neighborhood or you might bump into some old friends. I’m sure many of you will be sporting green soon to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on March 17. Check out some of the community events to celebrate the day with family and friends listed in our event calendar. Be sure to snap a picture of you and your family wearing green attire. Feel free to send photos to us so we can share them with your neighbors. If you know any neighbors who would like to be featured in the Maple Bluff Newsletter, please reach out to me. Enjoy this month with the temperatures (hopefully) rising as we reach the official day of spring on March 20. Also, have a happy St. Patty’s Day! OF PUBLIC WORKS SPRING TIME IS here, maybe a few weeks away, but the seasonal change is upon us. I have always enjoyed the renewal of life that comes with the spring season: the first tiny flowers and the budding of trees; the opportunity to once again put hands to soil and plant flowers and trees. It’s a great time of year! With the arrival of spring time we will have to deal with snow melt and spring rains. The terraces and parkways will be soft and impressionable, especially in the areas of last year’s street project. It is likely that these areas will be slow to green up as some of these locations did not see the grass seed germinate early enough to establish itself, if it did at all. We will be monitoring these areas closely. There are many other areas associated with last year’s work that we will be reviewing as well, such as the sidewalk and driveway approaches. Please keep in mind, the areas that received restoration will likely need time to firm up. So, avoid placing wheels of your automobile onto the terrace when parking or pulling into your driveways. If you are a “heavy” or frequent sump All pump user and would like to review your options for discharge somewhere other than your backyard, contact me at the Village Center. If it is at all possible, we will recommend that you “hard line” to the storm water system. Some areas of Lakewood and Cambridge are set up for that connection; please take advantage of that opportunity. Other areas of the village can make a similar connection with a little more effort. Please keep in mind that connecting to the sanitary sewer is NOT an alternative. This is called illicit discharge and is forbidden by ordinance. Do not hesitate to call with your questions or concerns. We are here to help you find a solution. I am currently reviewing locations for street and parkway tree planting, as well as assessing existing street and parkway tree conditions. I will drop off a note regarding the need of trimming and/or removal of village trees in the right-of-way that are alongside your residence. I will also place a wooden stake where I believe a suitable location exists for a new tree. Please contact me if you would like to play a role in the selection of a tree. I would be very Home Care is not the same. Homemaking Services Meals • Transportation Companionship • Laundry Groceries • Light Housekeeping happy to discuss this with you and see what options may be available. For me, there are precious few activities as enjoyable and rewarding as planting a tree! As you know, the village does not collect “Clean Sweep” type items. You are encouraged to take such items to the Dane County Clean Sweep location at: 7 102 U.S. Hwy. 12, Madison WI 53718 (Beltline/12/18 east toward Cambridge) Across from the Yahara Hills golf course at the Dane County Landfill Please feel free to call with your questions and concerns. We received an impressive number of responses, which speaks volumes about the commitment, care and compassion that our residents have for the village. Our Open House took place on February 3, a snowy Tuesday night when the Badgers blew out the Hoosiers at home. We met to receive verbal input to accompany the survey results. Our next step will be taking place (actually, it will have taken place by the time you’re reading this) on Friday, February 13 when Curt, Blake Theisen from SAA and I meet to go over the collected input and assessment. I’d like to share the reasoning behind the committee’s decision to allocate Bocce funds towards the development of a CORP. The Bocce Auction started back in 2003 by Bonnie Stewart and Michelle Pressentin and continues to gain momentum every year. We have now reached a point where the fund provides enough money to go beyond the typical $1,000-$5,000 purchases, but still too little to achieve the greater park and neighborhood infrastructure our village merits. Last year, Bocce raised an impressive $38,000. The Parks Committee voted unanimously at that point to allocate $8,000 to fund the CORP. Our goal is to optimize the collection and implementation of our residents’ priorities so we may enhance our parks for the betterment of the entire village. In addition, moving forward this plan will help guide the Parks Committee so we may continuously improve and enrich our village spaces and programs. I would say 99 percent of the time I hear nothing but hearty accolades about our village parks, programs and amenities, yet when a time comes to look at improvements, it can be easy to focus on the deficiencies. I invite everyone to view this from the perspective of enhancement. Let’s acknowledge the wonderful programs, facilities, parks and amenities we currently have, and build upon that foundation to make Maple Bluff ’s outdoor spaces the most functional and beautiful in the area. Please feel free to share any input about our parks you may have with me, members or the Parks and Recreation committee, Curt Erickson, Recreation Director, Trey Sprinkman, Am Curet, Julie Jensen, Jason Potter, Walter Stewart, Ellis Waller and Sheila Young. MARCH 2015 7 Winterfest Recap W interfest kicked off Monday, January 26 when the first clue for the Medallion search was given. Thursday, after the fourth clue was given, the Medallion was found by the Paulowski-Jaeger team (Callie and Connor Paulowski along with Grace and Finn Jaeger). Congratulations! Enjoy spending your icy cold cash prize of $100! In case you missed the clues and are curious, here they are: Winterfest 2015 Medallion Clues Clue 1: “It’s Winterfest 2015 and the medallion is nowhere to be seen.” Clue 2: “Look neither high nor low, but rather in the snow. Where the leaves no longer fall; now go and give it your all!” Clue 3: “It’s neither in the Woods nor on the Lake. The place where it lies is within the white stakes.” Clue 4: “It’s cold, my teeth chatter with fear that the medallion is really quite near. The land of the flyers soaring in the snow, is the medallion here, will we ever know?” Clue 5: (we never got this far, but this would have been Friday’s clue): “Still stumped? Still up for grabs is the $100 prize, head to the place where the birdies fly. Sled your way there and steer clear of the trees, it may not be fore, but is definitely three.” Answer: It was hidden in a hallowed out stump on hole 3 near Chatterton Pond buried in snow. Friday night’s Euchre Tournament was held in the toasty Beach House; Felted tables and warm lighting really made it cozy. The evening was filled with delicious Uno’s Pizza, Mark Little’s Home Brews, Winterfest Medallion Finders some smack-talking and slightly competitive card playing. The debate over whether it’s a “bump” or a “Euchre” continues, but it didn’t disrupt the fun neighborly play.
