PRINCIPALS’ CORNER
It is hard to believe that the end of the 2015-2016 school year is almost here! It has been a busy and exciting time.
We are very proud of all of our students for the effort that they put forth and for their positive and responsible attitude
during the PSSA testing. They gave us their best every day of the testing; we could not ask for more. We also thank you for
your support by making sure that they got enough sleep and had a good breakfast.
If you had an opportunity to attend the PV Annual Academic Fair, you know that the student work was outstanding! We
thank all of the teachers who participated and for encouraging their students to do their best on projects and writings that
were displayed. We enjoyed seeing all of the families; it’s lovely to see past, current, and future PVI students!
We are looking forward to the Lion King performances! The cast, crew, and chorus have been diligently practicing for
numerous hours after school. From the music that we have heard, we are all in for a treat! There are so many talented
children in this school and we are so proud of them. Many thanks to all of the parent volunteers who assisted with costumes
and set designs. A very special thank you to our very own Ms. Snyder, Ms. Stone, Mrs. Sawyer and Ms. Hicks. Without
everyone, this marvelous production would not be possible!
May will be a busy month with Spring band and chorus concerts, field days, field trips, the kickball tournament, the Wizards
assembly, and, new this year, our 4th grade Artists and Authors evening. Even though we have many wonderful activities in
May, teachers and students will still be hard at work in their classrooms to successfully conclude their academic year.
We bid our 6th grade students a fond farewell. We are certain that they are well prepared to move on to the next level and
that they will do well at the Middle School next year. We look forward to seeing our current fourth and fifth grade students
next year and welcome new students from PVE!
We want to thank all of our PVI teachers, paraprofessionals, monitors, secretarial staff, custodians, nurses, PTO, cafeteria
staff, school police and security, school counselors and psychologist for an outstanding school year. We sincerely hope that
you and your families have a safe and restful summer!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Bradley and Mrs. Herr

Greetings PVI Community,
The gymnasium walls were shaking as PVI’s PSSA Pep Rallies took place on Friday morning, April 8th.
Our PVI Band, under the direction of Mr. Bieleki played as our students entered. Pleasant Valley Varsity
Cheerleaders tumbled and cheered to set the electric atmosphere. PVI’s chorus added a patriotic feeling as they
sang the Star Spangled Banner directed by music/chorus teacher, Ms. Snyder. Inspiring messages by Mrs. Bradley,
Mrs. Herr, Pleasant Valley High School History teacher and Head Soccer Coach, Mr. Pachuta, and two Pleasant
Valley High School students captured the attention of our young audience. An outstanding drum performance by
sixth grade teacher, Mr. Pavuk brought the “house down”. We enjoyed entertainment by our Pleasant Valley High
School football players performing their very own skit, which kept the students engaged. The overall message- “if
you have confidence in yourself, you will be successful”.
A special thank you to everyone that made this a huge success for our students!
As the end of the year is quickly approaching, it is time for our third annual PVI Kick Ball Tournament.
Once again, students in each grade level will be competing for the number one spot. The winners will have their
names added to our PVI Kick Ball Trophy.
Best Wishes and Good Luck to all of our classes!
Yours in education,
Kelli George
PVI Dean of Students

Summer Reading
Attention 4th and 5th Grade
Students
A summer reading list is available on Pleasant
Valley’s website. You can access the list by following
the procedures listed below.







Log on to: www.pvbears.org
At the top of the page, slide your cursor over
“curriculum,” do not click. A drop down box
will appear. Click on “Office of Curriculum
and Instruction.”
Under “Welcome to the District Curriculum
Page,” there are three items in blue print.
Click on “Summer Reading List.” It is the
second item in the list.
This will take you to a file: “Pleasant Valley
Summer Reading List.” The book titles are
organized by grade levels.
Help your child to choose books based on the
grade level he or she just finished as well as the
grade level he or she will be entering. If the
book is easy for your child, have him or her
practice reading fluently. If it is a little tricky,
be sure to help them. Remind them to use the
decoding strategies they have learned at school
to figure the word out.
Remember to have them practice some writing.
Have them keep a journal about the books they
read. They could draw a picture and write
about their favorite part. They could write a
letter to the author. They could write a friend a
letter all about the book or books they have
read over the summer.
6th Grade Summer Reading
Requirement
All students who are attending Pleasant Valley
Middle School next school year are required to
complete an assigned summer reading project. All 6th
grade students who are transitioning to 7th grade next
year are required to read the book Hatchet by Gary
Paulsen.
The novel is about a boy named Brian Robeson who
is thirteen years old. He is traveling on a plane to visit
his father and the plane crashes. The boy has to learn to
survive on his own until he is finally rescued.
All 6th graders will receive information regarding the
assignment that will be required for 7th grade. The 7th
grade reading teachers will be using Hatchet to kick off
their instruction in the fall.
Students will be given the option of checking out
the book for the summer from the PVI library. A
permission slip will be sent home in early May. Once
signed by a parent/guardian, your child will be
permitted to check the book out of the library at PVI.
If you are not able to get a copy of the novel, please
contact Mrs. Ramsay at (570) 402-1000 ext. 1311 and
she can offer assistance.
