Newsletter of the Hawaii Army Museum Society Www.hiarmymuseumsoc.org Summer 2009 Aloha! On behalf of the Board of Trustees of your Hawaii Army Museum Society, I am delighted to announce that the 2009 Ihe Award will be presented to Dr. Lawrence K. W. Tseu. We hope you will mark November 5, 2009 on your calendar and join us in recognizing the accomplishments of Dr. Tseu. Information on how to make a reservation will be available on our website http://www.hiarmymuseumsoc.org and members will receive invitations by mail. The Gallery of Heroes Induction Ceremony was held on April 30, 2009 and will be remembered for the moving tribute offered to seven Distinguished Service Cross recipients. Before Dr. Lawrence K. W. Tseu a crowd of over 250 family, friends, civilian and military dignitaries, Generals David A. Bramlett and Raymond V. Mason spoke of the valorous actions of these remarkable sons of Hawaii. You can read the citations online by clicking on exhibits, then Gallery of Heroes. On May 16, 2009 , the annual Living History Day displays brought record crowds. A large contingent of active duty soldiers proudly demonstrated their knowledge, high tech gear and their vehicles. Young and old alike took advantage of the opportunity for close up and hands on inspection. The 28th Annual HAMS Golf Tournament was held on a beautiful June 26th, 2009 at the Army’s Leilehua Golf Course. With the support of many, we were able to host several teams of Wounded Warriors again this year and to offer all players a professional caliber golf tournament with an extraordinary array of exciting prizes. The success of this tournament is due to committee chair Hal Okita (Colonel, USA Retired) and his team of volunteers. After many years of fun at the helm, Hal will step aside to continue to advise and Gordon Cho (Colonel, USA, Retired) will become committee chair. The Board of Trustees has voted to re-name the annual event the: “General Herbert E. Wolff Memorial Golf Tournament” Your HAMS membership adds two new benefits: First, for those who are not military ID card holders, HAMS is partnering with the Hale Koa Hotel to allow all HAMS members to access all food, beverage, and entertainment operations at the Hale Koa. This exciting benefit is available immediately. For information on how non-ID card holders can obtain a food and beverage card, please read the details on page 10. Second, our new Museum Audio Tour is available at half price ($2.50) to you and your family. This tour adds a new dimension to your visit to the US Army Museum of Hawaii. Victoria (Vicki) W. Olson Executive Director, HAMS GALLERY OF HEROES Over two hundred friends, family, and fellow soldiers attended the Gallery of Heroes Induction Ceremony at the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii on April 30, 2009. Attendees arrived from as far away as South Carolina and Guam to pay their respect to seven Distinguished Service Cross recipients. Their heroism spanned the conflicts of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Family members unveil the display plaques. 2009 Gallery of Heroes Inductees CPT Robert Maluenda Calibosa CPT Linus Gerard K. Iida SSGT Edward Noboru Kaneshiro 1LT John Kuulei Kauaihao Gallery of Heroes 2009 Months and often years of research go into the selection of the inductees. There is no central repository of knowledge on DSC awards and narrowing it down to Hawaii roots is even more difficult. An inductee must have been born in Hawaii, entered the service from Hawaii, or have permanently resided in Hawaii for at least 10 years. HAMS member CW4 Howard S. Okada, US Army, Retired, has for many years been the point man on this effort. Mahalo! Howard! Army museum curator, Judi Bowman, also did extensive research along with Howard Okada to create a list of possible inductees who have been awarded the Medal of Honor and the Distinguished Service Cross and have the required Hawaii ties. Howard would then search for family members of future inductees and photographs of the honorees. Three weeks before the ceremony, Howard had made contact with three of the honorees’ families (the Iida, Kaneshiro, and Kaukaihao families) who were planning to attend the ceremony. With the help of the internet and contacts with a variety of Army Division Associations, a few more clues to families and comrades who served with our heroes emerged. Two weeks before the scheduled ceremony, a message left 4 years ago on the “Virtual Vietnam Wall” by the grandniece of CPT Linus G. K.Chock led me (Vicki Olson) to CPT Chock’s brother, CSMgt (Ret) Alfred Chock in Austin, TX. With this information, we were able to locate CPT Chock’ son, Patrick Minyard of CA. The widow of CPT Chock had remarried and Patrick was adopted by his stepfather. When contacted, Patrick and his wife, Patti, immediately agreed to attend the ceremony. With the help of two reporters, Greg Kakesako (Star Bulletin) and William Cole (Honolulu Advertiser) and their series of articles on the upcoming induction, other family members heard of the ceremony. Three days before the scheduled ceremony, another son of an honoree, also a Patrick who carried his stepfather’s last name, was reading the paper as he arrived at work. Patrick Factura Viela read Greg Kakaseko’s article three days before the ceremony and immediately came to the HAMS office. The very next day, Fred Maluenda, uncle of CPT Robert Maluenda Caliboso, appeared at the museum because of the media attention. On the eve of the induction ceremony, we had received word from the families of six of the inductees and had photographs of five. Early on the morning of April 30, 2009, Herman Q. Hernaez, the nephew of honoree, PVT Paulino E. Hernaez, was standing at the entrance to the museum to represent his family at the ceremony. When the ceremony began at 1 pm, hundreds of family, friends and comrades of all seven inductees stood to honor the newest inductees of the U. S. Army Museum of Hawaii’s Gallery of Heroes! MG Raymond V. Mason, Commanding General, 8th Theater Sustainment Command, delivers the keynote speech during the Gallery of Heroes induction ceremony, April 30, at Fort DeRussy.
