After a long search and help from Mike Egami, we have a new newsletter editor. Mahalo to Susan Oshiro for taking on the position! Speaking of Mike Egami—his retirement from federal service is on 31 March. He most recently carried the title of “Museum Curator”, but he turned that position into much more. Upon his arrival at the US Army Museum of Hawaii, Mike used his skills gained from years of experience as an Army Public Affairs Officer, to increase the number of museum volunteers, make certain that they each received proper training, and always made sure that they were properly recognized for their efforts. HAMS was a very willing partner in hosting these events to show our volunteers how treasured they really are! Mike also began an outreach program for military units on how they might use a visit to the museum for professional development. Your Society contributed $250,000 towards the parapet completion which now has a multi-purpose classroom within the Diamondhead parapet. It was HAMS’ goal to increase educational outreach and Mike Egami, the late Frank Boas, and now our Education Chair, Les Bise have worked tirelessly with towards this goal. The classroom is constantly in use. From service in the Army to his days at the US Army Museum, Mike has had an enormous positive impact. HAMS and the volunteers will bid Mike farewell on Thursday, 10 March at a breakfast in his honor. We wish Mike and his wife Judy, all the best as they begin a new chapter in their lives. Golf Chair, Les Bise and I hope all of you will be able to join us at the 33rd Annual General Herbert E. Wollf Memorial Fundraiser on 20 June 2014 at Leilehua Golf Course. Please call 808-941-3900 for more information. Hayashi at the 2013 Ihe Award Breakfast at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. In ancient Hawai’i, the warrior who was honored by service to the Chief kept himself in readiness to meet every challenge. Perfect physical condition and mental alertness allowed him to respond quickly to any demand. One symbol of this readiness was the spear, or Ihe, which was always at the warrior’s side. Alan’s association with the Army goes back to his college days as a member of the Stanford University ROTC program. Alan was appointed as a Tactical (TAC) Officer at the Aberdeen Proving Ground and also served with Hawaii’s 25th Infantry Division (725th Ordinance Battalion) and the US Army Reserve (Hawaii Training Center Infantry). Alan left military service to join his father’s contracting business where he was employed for 28 years. Prior to his current position at BAE Systems Support Solutions’ (S2) as its Director of Public Relations and Policy Advocacy in Hawaii, Alan also worked for Amfac and the Waikiki Convention Center Authority. If he’s not golfing or traveling with his wife Karen, Alan serves, or has served on the boards of directors of the Hawaii Strategic Development Corporation, Military Affairs Council (MAC) of the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, Army Hawaii Housing Foundation, Stanford Alumni Association, and the University of Hawaii, Manoa, Shidler College of Business Alumni, along with many others. He is also a member of the Rotary Club of Metropolitan Honolulu, Friends of Hickam, the Navy League, the Hawaii Society of Business Professionals, and Soroptimist International of Waikiki.
