The Renfrew County NFU continues to work on many issues affecting family farms throughout
the county.
Membership NFU – O membership numbers have rebounded significantly after being reaccredited as a General Farm Organization for 2014. A hardy welcome to all new and returning
members.
Agriculture Growth Act Momentum is building for opposition to Bill C18. The Bill removes a
farmer’s right to save, reuse and sell seed and replaces it with a privilege to only save and reuse.
It also subjects farmers to huge royalties payable at purchase of seed and harvesting of crops.
Canada hopes to implement the UPOV 91 protocol in this act.
2014 Members Conference the NFU – O hosted the Annual Members Conference in Guelph
April 12. Representatives from across Ontario, including two from the Renfrew Local, came
together to share ideas and discuss issues.
NFU National Women’s Vice President visits Renfrew County Marcella Pedersen toured
Renfrew County during her Ontario visit. She was on an extensive tour of the province to
discuss and share ideas on food safety and food sovereignty issues.
Upcoming Provincial Election Renfrew County Local is hoping to engage candidates on the
following issues: Hydro rates, provincial transfer payments to municipalities, Kemptville College
closure, ease of consumer access to locally produced food and upgrades to Highway 17.
Presentation to Agriculture Senate Committee National NFU Vice President Coral Sproule
made presentation on the effects of neonicatinoid seed treatments on pollinators. The application
of neonicatinoids is an ongoing concern for Bee Keepers and the natural environment. Colony
collapse and loss of natural pollinators has been linked to the application of neonicatinoids. The
NFU seeks a moratorium on the use of neonicatinoids similar to the policy as adopted in the EU.
Regular Monthly Meeting first Monday of the month, Barr Line Community Centre, 7:30 p.m.
All members welcome.
Renfrew County Junior Farmers
Junior Farmers are gearing up for a fun summer with events happening across the province
but before we get to the exciting upcoming events, we better update you on our latest adventures.
Marissa Mulligan, Jeannette Straathof and Adrian Straathof represented Renfrew County at
March Conference held in Cornwall. Along with the regular annual meeting, delegates were treated
to a presentation by the Peterson Brothers – the agriculture industries equivalent of social media
gurus. As a farming family from Kansas, the three brothers took to the airwaves to educate
consumers and increase awareness about modern agriculture. Their YouTube videos, Facebook page,
and Blog have become popular around the world. The brothers shared with the conference delegates
not only their enthusiasm for the ag. industry but insight into the use of social media as a way to
share your message with the world. Not familiar with the Peterson Brothers? Search them on
YouTube and check out their parodies. Their first parody “I’m Farming and I Grow It” has reached over
8 million views.
Bruce Cole attended the Provincial Directors meeting and PD/Executive Training May 3rd in
Niagara. It was a busy weekend discussing policy and learning the tricks to running effective
meetings. In true JF fashion the weekend was not all work and no play. Niagara JF’ers hosted an
eventful car rally full of twists, turns and sudden rolling stops!
If you check out the Provincial Junior Farmer Facebook page you will see lots planned for the
summer. With all the JF events going on there will be lot of FFA weekends (Father Farms Alone) if we
try to take them all in. Just to list a few:
 Leadership Camp – June 6-8, Sundridge
 Hosting of International Delegates – Zone 1 – July 13-26 (that is us) – application to host due
May 30
 Carleton County Redneck Games and Dance – June 21 – definitely marked on our social
calendars
 JF Golf Tournament – August 8, Guelph (Alumni teams are encouraged)
 Autumn Profile – October hosted by Middlesex JF

Renfrew County Junior Farmers next meeting is May 20, 7:30 p.m., Cobden Agricultural Hall.
Bring your own bowl and spoon to build an ice cream sundae – or pay the fine to support this year’s
provincial charity Bullying Canada and we will provide a bowl and spoon and maybe a napkin.
Remember part of our mandate is community involvement. If your organization is hosting an
event Junior Farmers can help at please contact us. (don’t be afraid – we say yes to just about
anything if we can make it)
Junior Farmers is the next step from 4-H. Junior Farmer members are between 15 and 29 (as of Jan. 1)
from all occupations and walks of life. To learn more about the Renfrew County Club contact us

DO YOU LOVE 4-H
AND DO YOU LOVE (OR AT LEAST ENJOY) GOLF???
By: Susan Humphries, Ontario 4-H Foundation Trustee
As an Ontario 4-H Foundation Trustee, I am asking for your assistance with one of the
major fundraisers that the Foundation organizes on an annual basis. The Ontario 4-H
Foundation Golf Tournaments (one in Guelph and one in the Ottawa area) have both
been key fundraisers and we look forward to them again this year.
The dates are June 3rd (at Victoria Park East Golf Club, Guelph) and June 19th (at
Anderson Links Golf and Country Club, Ottawa). Last year these 2 tournaments
cleared over $40,000 to help support the 4-H program in Ontario! See the website
below for more details!
Ontario 4-H Golf Tournaments
http://www.4-hontario.ca/support-4h/golf-tournaments.aspx
I sincerely hope that some of you may enjoy the golfing but if not, there is an opportunity
to participate in another way!
As I know that 4-H has been a key part of your life, I am hoping that you would be
interested in supporting the future of 4-H by making a donation to purchase auction
items to enhance the money made at these tournaments. The hope is that the
auction items will sell for more than they were purchased for. The staff purchases items
that they know have historically sold well using the money we donate-what could be
easier!!
Alternatively, if you wish to provide a silent or live auction item, I would be happy to
assist in getting the items to the tournaments! If you would like to make a financial donation towards purchasing items, please forward
a cheque (note “Friends of 4-H golf clubhouse donation” in the memo line and make out
to the Ontario 4-H Foundation) directly to the 4-H Ontario Office at:
4-H Ontario
111 Main Street North
Rockwood, ON N0B 2K0
ATTN: Heather McKeown
Or feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have any questions!
Hope to see you on the golf course!!
INVESTING IN THE FUTURE OF THE 4-H PROGRAM IN
ONTARIO
Next year 4-H Ontario is celebrating its centennial year - 100 years of developing,
mentoring and molding our youth into strong, successful adults. 4-H is Canada’s longest running
youth organization and has great plans for continuing their programs well into the future.
4-H has always been about investing in leadership, investing in youth and investing in
communities and as we reach this milestone, why not give back? Say “thank you” to those who
offered you, your family and your community, a chance to grow, to learn, to succeed - to “learn
to do by doing”!
By making 4-H your “charity of choice”, you are investing in the development of future
generations of 4-H programs, 4-H leaders and youth. From a local level to the wider Ontario 4-H
Foundation your donation can help keep the 4-H program going strong for another 100 years.
Donating to the 4-H program is simple; here are some examples on how you can give
back:






Make a donation to your local association c/o Agatha Crogie 613-649-2734.
Make a donation to the Ontario 4-H Foundation and receive a charitable tax
receipt. This donation can be identified to the endowment fund for your local
association OR put into the general endowment fund to support the broader 4-H
program development and sustainability.
Encourage others to consider 4-H as their “charity of choice”
In memoriam - where the family may not have thought of 4-H, you can select the
4-H program for your donation in memory of a loved one, friend or colleague.
Consider a bequest to 4-H in your will- this is an excellent way to invest in the
leadership and skill development of youth in the future.
Consider starting a scholarship or supporting one of the great programs that are
currently being offered
More information on donating can be found on the 4-H Ontario website
(http://www.4-hontario.ca/support-4h).
For questions regarding wills, life insurances or other support to programming, you can contact
Andrew Moore at 4-H Ontario at [email protected]
So show your support and your thanks by making 4-H your charity of choice. Invest in
the future, invest in our youth, invest in 4-H.

EVERYONE IS WELCOME
What do you call a cow you can't see? Camooflauged.
A man staggers into the emergency room with a concussion, multiple bruises, and a
five iron wrapped around his neck. Naturally the doctor asks him what happened.
"Well, it was like this" said the man. "I was having a quiet round of golf with my
wife, when at a difficult hole, we both sliced our balls into a pasture of cows. We
went to look for them, and while I was rooting around I noticed that one of the
cows had something white in it's rear end. I walked over and lifted up the tail, and
sure enough, there was a golf ball with my wife's monogram on it stuck right in the
middle of the cow's butt. That’s when I made my mistake." "What did you do?",
asked the doctor. "Well, I lifted the tail, pointed, and yelled to my wife, "Hey! This
looks like yours!"

BMO Farm Family of the Year nomination.
The Renfrew County Plowmen's nominated
David and Joan Reid of Admaston.
Their multigenerational farm has been operating through
5 generations since 1866 when Robert Reid travelled from
Paisley Scotland to settle him and his family on a farm in
Renfrew County.
Over the many years, the Reids have been actively involved in
many facets of our community and we wish them best of luck and
look forward to hearing the results.

Ministry Review of Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark Round Table
Recommendations
The Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) formed the Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark Round Table as
an advisory group with agricultural, conservation, First Nations, and industry stakeholders to develop
recommendations on a long-term approach for the protection and recovery of the species without
significantly impacting Ontario’s agricultural sector. On November 1, 2013, the Bobolink and Eastern
Meadowlark Round Table submitted a report to the MNR which includes a package of recommendations,
of which the key recommendation is for “an integrated solution package that includes a 10-year extension
of the current exemption for agriculture, stewardship incentives, research, education and outreach.” It is
being actively considered by the government and public input is desired. The Bobolink and Eastern
Meadowlark Round Table Report is available
http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/stdprodcontrib/groups/lr/@mnr/@species/documents/document/bobortreport_en.pdf
The Ministry has developed several key questions to help facilitate public input on the 10
recommendations in the Round Table Report:
- Do you support the exemption solutions package proposed in the report, which would include extending
the agricultural exemption until 2024 as well as stewardship incentives for landowners, research and
monitoring, and education and outreach? Please explain why you do or do not support the proposed
exemptions.
- Are there any components of the solutions package that are more or less important than others?
- How can all landowners be encouraged to take part in recovery?
- What existing or new strategies and plans could be harnessed to conserve suitable grassland, hay, and
pasture habitat in Ontario?
During Stage 1, the public is invited to review the Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark Round Table
Report and provide comments on how the government should consider the recommendations it contains
in the development of a protection and recovery approach, including the government response statement,
for Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark in Ontario.
Please reference Environmental Registry number 012-1597 in your comments.
During Stage 2, the draft government response statement for Bobolink and Eastern Meadowlark will be
made available for public review and comment on the MNR Species at Risk website. Comments will be
considered in finalizing the government response statement.
Please reference Environmental Registry number 012-1597 in your comments.
The comment period began Thursday April 17th and extends for 45 days until June 2, 2014.

The Directors of Renfrew County Cattlemen encourage our membership to respond favourably
to the recommendations put forward by the Round Table.
Muskrat Watershed Project
Renfrew County Cattlemen’s Association (RCCA) has signed a letter of support to Algonquin
College supporting their efforts to obtain funding for a comprehensive water quality study in the
Muskrat River watershed. The study will test water for nutrient and sediment loading so that
future mitigation efforts can be focused on source areas where concentrations are the most
problematic. The application for funding from the Water Adaptation Management & Quality
Initiative (WAMQI) was successful for the maximum amount of $70,000 from the program.
WAMQI is administered by Farm & Food Care Ontario under the Federal/Provincial/Territorial
‘Growing Forward II’ (GF2) program. Water sampling is being done throughout the watershed
and includes Black Creek, various locations on Snake River and Mink Creek and associated
municipal drain outlets, as well as both the upper and lower Muskrat River, Buttermilk Creek,
Olmstead Lake and several locations on Muskrat Lake. The sampling began April 24th and will
continue through the month of November. RCCA has a member sitting on the project steering
committee and has committed to providing a forum for presentation of the results of the project
to our membership.
Beef Cattle Code of Practice Workshop
Renfrew County Cattlemen are hosting a demonstration workshop on the new Code of Practice.
The workshop will demonstrate some of the new ‘pain mitigation’ practices required under the
new code. Date and time have yet to be determined so stay tuned.
