A short ninety minute drive east of Toronto lie the scenic and serene Buckhorn and District. In a little over one
hundred years this area has transformed itself from a logging and farming region to a rich diverse tourist destination.

inter is slowly coming to an end and we begin to see more of
the sun in the sky, long awaited spring is around the corner and
dreams of summer fill us with inspiration. The snow and slush,
winter scraping and shoveling will be a distant memory, soon forgotten.
Slowly, nature will take its course to bring us bright blues, lush greens
and sparkling water. Alongside nature, business will begin its springtime
bloom, as seasonal residents, full time residents and visitors alike will
begin enjoying this beautiful area and all it has to offer.
The Buckhorn District Tourist Association (BDTA) is a volunteer lead
group comprised of local business owners and residents who bring
together their cumulative experience, wisdom and knowledge to create
and run this marketing and information organization. We support member
businesses in meeting their goals and ambitions and help stimulate the
local regional economy through initiatives, programs and advertising.
This year has blessed us with wonderful additions to our Board of Directors,
individuals who are hungry to help and who see the beauty and potential
this area has to offer. I would like to welcome and thank these new board
members: Erin McLean, Eva Fisher, Andrea Enright and Bruce Averill. We
hope to see your hopes and desires met and hard work pay off.
Buckhorn will be seeing an abundance of change through the new
Community Improvement Plan (CIP). This comprehensive plan has slated
new designs for our public space. It is categorically the most important
piece of planning Buckhorn has seen in quite some time. The plan lays
out new walking paths, sidewalks, parking and watercraft dockage,
as well as park expansion and public art initiatives among many other
projects. The improvements to Buckhorn will help everyone enjoy our
community better than ever before. Whether people are out for a stroll,
visiting their favourite store or enjoying some time out on their boat;
the improvements will make their experience a much better one. The
BDTA will support these initiatives in any way possible to ensure that the
Community Improvement Plan moves forward without a hiccup.
The Kawartha Highlands Park has seen the opening of their new
walking trail. I would like to congratulate the members of the Buckhorn
Trails Association for this amazing accomplishment. The new trail looks
incredible and is a welcome addition to the park. It encompasses a loop
with eight educational stops showing off the ecology, history and habitats
of this beautiful area. A job well done!
Please come see us at our visitor centre, conveniently located adjacent to
the LCBO, only a short walk away from the lift lock. You can browse our
Buckhorn themed wearable gear and other Buckhorn labeled items. The
visitor centre offers a plethora of information about our area and visitors are
more than welcome to come in to browse and ask questions.

The
Mississauga
River
Interpretive Trail
by Marlys Kerkman
The Mississauga River Interpretive Trail is
the first of its kind in the 90,000 acre Kawartha
Highlands Provincial Park. An interpretive trail
is one that has information signs or brochures
identifying the species present and/or explaining
the ecology of the site. This trail is three kilometers
north of the lights in Buckhorn. A project of the
Buckhorn Trails Association and Ontario Parks,
the trail was officially opened to the public by Paul
Smith, Park Superintendent, and Travis Cameron,
Park Biologist, in October 2015.
The Mississagua River, which you cross to access
the trail, is either flowing placidly or tumbling
towards its destination of Buckhorn Lake. The
geology of the area has shaped the river and the
river has shaped the natural and cultural heritage
of the area. On the trail, eight different interpretive
stops invite you to become familiar with the
geology, the use of the area by the Michi Saagiig
(Mississauga) people, the lumber industry, the rock
barren, rapids, habitats of animals specific to the area
such as the Five-Lined Skink, and the beaver dam.
The vast rock barren, which is impossible to
escape in this land between the St. Lawrence
Lowlands and the Canadian Shield, influences
how humans use the area and the habitat that is
available to the species that are found here. The
trail takes you through wetlands which support
reptile Species at Risk including the Eastern HogNosed Snake and the Blanding’s Turtle.
6 | Buckhorn District Tourist Association 2016
At the beaver dam a meditative spirit easily
envelopes you as you consider the hours of labour
Beaver Dam Here at the beaver dam in this wetlands
location listen for the wildlife, see the breeze ripple the water
or is that a beaver, feel the solidness of the rock below your
feet as you imagine the effort of the beaver as they gnawed
down yet another sapling to shore up their project.
Granite The minerals of quartz and feldspar which
together make a rock – granite - are more “blocky” as
pictured here but the rest of the rock in the area, under
close examination has the same minerals.
needed by these intrepid rodents to build the wall which crosses this body of water and cause changes in the
entire ecosystem. The pond which results attracts ducks, different fish and amphibian species. As time passes
and as the food supply diminishes the dam will not be maintained, will weaken and fail. The pond will drain. Fish
will no longer have a habitat. Ducks will no longer have a home. And the ecosystem will be changed again.
As you wind your way along the trail following the small blue signs showing a hiker you may stop and enjoy the
small rapids with a picnic, do some swimming or fishing. You are part of an ecosystem that was initially formed
1.1 billion years ago. The rocks you sit on were buried tens of kilometers deep. First Nations people travelled
this river where you are soaking up the natural beauty. Become a part of this heritage. Take your memories and
your garbage with you.
Rapids At these small rapids you may get out of your canoe
and push yourself over the turbulence, enjoy a swim or pull
over to the shore and have that lunch you brought along.
Trail sign Follow these blue triangle markers which lead
you along the river, the rock barren, and the wetlands for
your full immersion into the ecosystem of the Mississauga
River Interpretive Trail.

a bobber if they have never fished before. A very small Rapala tied
directly onto the line with no more than 6 lb. test pays dividends also.
Sensational
Spring Fishing
Carp can be loads of fun on a light line and they have no teeth, so a
small treble hook tied directly to the line loaded with corn sitting on
the bottom, is the key. You can increase your chances by chumming
the water with corn prior to fishing.
There are literally thousands of other tactics and techniques to
employ, so if it’s not working, change it up or move to a different spot
and happy fishing.

Kawartha Fishing Tips for Beginners

T
he following is a condensed version of how to increase your odds and get more fish on
your line.
As I have said in the past, fish have been eating other fish, worms and bugs for hundreds of
thousands of years, so you can never go wrong with live bait.
Bass is probably the most popular in the area because they’re easy to catch and plentiful
here. Bass are predominantly an ambush fish so they lurk under docks, logs and weeds
waiting for unsuspecting prey to swim by. Spinner baits seem to be the top choice of
anglers, sometimes tipped with an artificial worm. A 2 – 3 inch minnow just hooked under the
dorsal fin with just enough split shot to take it down works well also. On a very calm day or
night, you might try some top water lures.
Walleye, because of global warming and the lake clarity caused by zebra mussels, are a bit
sparser than previous years, but there are still a few to be had. Walleye are low light hunters.
Drifting with a minnow tipped bucktail jig early morning, dusk or a cloudy choppy day can
yield good results. A very slow troll with a 4” Rapala (usually blue) type lure under the same
conditions works well. If the only time you do have to fish is the middle of a bright, calm
afternoon, look for a deep thick weed bed and drive your banana jigs right to the bottom.
Musky can be caught but patience is a virtue with these monsters. According to some
statistics, it takes 25 rod hours to catch one.
Heavy duty rods, lines and leaders are a must. Muskies are notorious for following lures for
long distances so if you’re casting, you quite often will have one follow right up to the boat
without striking. A fast troll with big crank baits skirting the outside edges of deep weed beds
will yield one, if they are going to strike. Another completely different approach is still fishing
with a big sucker minnow, the trick here is being patient enough for the fish to take the whole
minnow; otherwise you will just be left with minnow halves.
Panfish, which include Sunfish, Perch, and Crappie, are great fun for the children. Live worms
and small hooks work best with light line and no terminal tackle like leaders or swivels. Use

Bear
Country
by Marlys Kerkman
You may come across a mom with cubs. That
provides even more reason to leave them alone.
It is suggested that you back up slowly and get
distance between you and the bears before you
turn and go back the way you came.
It is suggested that if you see a bear that is far
away, he may know that you are there as they have
great senses of smell. You may stretch up high and
wave your hands over your head to suggest your
size. That bear spray will help deflect his interest!
Back away slowly.
An hour before sunrise, bears start to get active.
They are less active in the middle of the day. In
July and August they often seek out shade in the
middle of the afternoon. Late afternoon sees them
out on the hunt again looking for ripe berries. They
If you’re hiking in the Kawartha Highlands
Provincial Park, you may encounter bears. “It
is bear country,” says Martin Obbard, research
scientist with the Ontario Ministry of Natural
Resources and Forestry. He states that there are
bears down to Keene and even farther south
although fewer numbers have been recorded
recently. The oak trees provide acorns for the
bears in the fall and are a calling card for them to
come to this area. There are lots of other excellent
food sources. A good apple year, such as we had
in 2015, draws the bears especially if the trees are
around old buildings or abandoned farmland.
If you see a bear what
do you do? First of
all, before you start
your hike, Obbard
suggests you buy a
can of bear spray.
He quotes published
articles which claim
its effectiveness. It
is expensive but,
according to Martin, it
lasts for several years.
Bears stay away from
the odor.
Carry bear spray where you
can reach it quickly.
18 | Buckhorn District Tourist Association 2016
What other options are available if you don’t have
bear spray and the woodlands are calling? Obbard
suggests the Fox-Pro safety whistle. It is very loud
and has a very high frequency and startles the
bear.
Grizzly Bear
are typically active during daylight unless there is a
full moon which may change their activity pattern.
Are you bothered by bears at your home? One
of the best things that people can do is make
sure that their garbage is not accessible. Obbard
stated that more than 50% of bear-human conflict
is dependent on garbage. Bird feeders can be an
attraction for these wanderers as well. The seed is
high in energy and the bear learns this. After all, he
is after calories.
So, enjoy your walk in the beautiful Kawarthas. Be
prepared! Bear spray or whistle! Keep your eyes
open and if you do meet one of our native wild
species, decide right away who is bigger and, if it
is not you, leave.
Black Bear
Another question – what are the chances of
seeing a bear that is interested in attacking? “It is
very slim,” states Obbard. When you see a bear,
this research scientist says to stop and assess
the bear’s behaviour. If it is displaying that it is
uncomfortable with your presence and it wants you
to back off. Do so!
What is displaying? Obbard describes it as
behaviour on a continuum from the ears going
back to the bear making a loud exhalation and
clacking the molars together. Bears use all the
same signals on us that they would use on other
bears. They live in a bear to bear world and use
intimidation on each other based on their size.
They may use a sideways swagger to show off
how big they are without actually using teeth and
claws. They use these sophisticated displays to
avoid the possibility of actually hurting each other. If
one animal is smaller, that animal usually takes off.
So, if you are smaller take off, but don’t run!
Black bears are the common bear in this area.

event pairs locally made chocolates with one of the
distinctive wines.
Kawartha Country Wines offers another way to
cool off. They have partnered with The Land
Canadian Adventure to host edible wild paddling
excursions. On these local canoe trips, a local
plant expert teaches participants to identify
edible wild plants. At the end of the excursion,
participants are brought back to the winery where
they are provided with an edible wild plant themed
wine and cheese feast. If you visit during the
spring or fall or upon request, call the winery at
705-657-9916 and book your adventure.
Kawartha Country Wines
by Marlys Kerkman
When you get home from Buckhorn, the first
question may be – Did you go to the winery?
Hopefully, you can answer that question with a
big yes! What kind did you buy? Apricot, Northern
Kiwi, Black Currant, or the sweet plum, Shiro
Plum.....Or maybe you decided on one of the
grape wines...How did you decide? Perhaps you
tasted some first. Wine tasting is always available.
You can taste more than the wine. Try some cider,
preserves, balsamic vinegars, grilling sauces
or wine jellies. Of course, we are talking about

of Toronto or 30 minutes north of Peterborough
on County Road #36 between Buckhorn and

the orchard but watch for the honeybees. There is
plenty of parking for cars and tour buses alike. If
you call in advance those in your group can enjoy
wine by the glass or a local cheese tray on the
outdoor patio.
This winery, made up of a wine making facility,
tasting room and gift shop housed in a restored
1866 log cabin, is nestled in 22 scenic acres of
apple and pear trees, raspberry canes, red and
white grape vines, rhubarb plants and stately
maples. When visiting you are welcome to stroll
Cool off in the summer with wine ice cream which
is 3% alcohol. It is scrumptious and a first in
Ontario made in cooperation with a local ice cream
maker. Also, on Tuesdays in the summer, the
winery hosts free wine and chocolate tasting. This

When you walk into the cozy, renovated, log cabin
you are greeted by wine jellies and preserves.
Listen to these tastes – Northern Kiwi Wine Jelly,
Raspberry Chocolate Wine Jelly, Crabapple Jelly,
Gooseberry Preserves, Peach Dessert Topping and
the list goes on. In the gift shop are hand crafted
pottery, wine accessories, wood carvings, jewellery
and more. Definitely something for everyone
including the family dog to which Kawartha
Country Wines is very accommodating.
These bold business experts, John and Trish,
have also opened The Kawartha Store in Fenelon
Falls. Where the winery features local and Ontario
produce in its wine, vinegar and jellies, The
Kawartha Store emphasizes the best of Canadian
made and local fashion. The 5000 square foot
store is housed in the historic Fenelon Falls hotel
building.
Both stores can be found online. Shop for
wine at www.kawarthacountrywines.ca,
it will be delivered to your door. At
www.thekawarthastore.ca you can shop
an impressive selection of exclusive Canadian
made clothing.
How will you answer that question when you
get home?

Nichol’s
Cove Studio
by Marlys Kerkman
The Nichol’s Cove Studio
welcomes you with art basketry, wire sculpture,
pottery, watercolour
Sandi McNeil’s basketry made from the environment
surrounding the studio.
As you walk through the autumnal woodlands
with the sound of leaves at your feet and the
sound of water lapping at the shore of the beaver
pond, rock from the Canadian Shield jumps out
of the earth and becomes a studio secreted away
in the woods inviting you in to view a wonderful
display of stone sculpture, pottery, wire tree
and bird sculpture, basketry, watercolour, and
encaustic.
This studio is the fruition of a dream of Carol
Nichol to have a place to express her artistic skill
– watercolour and stone sculpture – and nurture
the soul. Her artistic skills are not the only ones on
display in the studio.
36 | Buckhorn District Tourist Association 2016
The pottery of Janet McDougall is also there to
enjoy. A potter who practices hand building and
wheel-work, she works principally with stoneware
and porcelain. This “in between world” in which
she lives influences her work and she claims to
be “inspired by the ruggedly beautiful natural
surroundings in the heart of the Kawartha Lakes
Region.” Observe her art and observe nature.
Sandi McNeil uses sticks and stones to create
amazing basketry and wire sculpture with the
stones providing the basis for her wire trees and
birds. Again the love of nature is visibly apparent
in her stick figure sculptures, her unique baskets
and large wall weavings. Sandi can be
found wading through marshes and ditches
collecting cedar bark, dogwood, and willow
“weavers” for her creations.
Part of the calling of Nichol’s Cove Studio is
the basketry and wire sculpture workshops
provided by Sandi. A public school teacher,
Sandi uses these skills to engage participants
successfully in the creating of baskets and
wire sculptures. In these one or two day
basketry workshops you are guided through
the steps needed to gather and process local
natural materials from the plant life at Nichol’s
Cove Studio and to use willow, basswood or
cedar in the creations.
The seasonal changes are not ignored at the
Studio, but embraced. Workshops are held
year round and, weather permitting, they are
held outside. Dog sledding, cross country
skiing and snow shoeing along with nighttime
hikes are all part of the experience of the
Nichol’s Cove Studio.
Nichol’s Cove Studio is located on 73 acres
at the edge of the Canadian Shield not far
from the shores of Pigeon Lake. Nichol’s
Cove Studio, 1291 County Road 36, is
located halfway between Buckhorn and
Bobcaygeon on the north side. The
property is opposite Nichol’s Cove Road.
The studio is owned and operated by
Carol Nichol. Call Carol at 705-928-6955
or [email protected] for
information on the workshops.
The inside gallery and some of its delightful products
are here to view.
The natural surroundings of the studio enrich your soul and
your artistic experience.

What Do
You Mean,
The Land
Between?
What do you notice when driving from Haliburton
to Toronto? Or when traveling to Barrie? Or
Peterborough for that matter? Even more, when
you travel west to east, from Georgian Bay to
Kingston, what do you see?
Perhaps what stands out is that the land is less
rugged than in the near north, but not as flat and
not arable like that to the south. Or maybe you
notice more open areas, exposed bedrock in
various greys and pinks. Look further and you will
notice a repeating and wavy pattern of low to high
and wet to dry. What you are seeing is the Land
Between.
The Land Between is a transition zone between the
Canadian Shield and the St. Lawrence Lowlands
and what ecologists call an ecotone: the edge of a
homogeneous ecosystem. This is no small “fringe”
area either. The whole of it extends west from
Muskoka and southern Parry Sound all the way, at
approximately 240 km., to Kingston. On average
it is 40 km. wide. The Land Between is what we
identify primarily as Cottage Country.
A mosaic or patchwork of habitats marked by
Limestone “stepping stones” to the south and
Granite barrens at the edge of the shield to
the north characterizes the area. Shallow soils
predominate as well as many interconnected small
40 | Buckhorn District Tourist Association 2016
lakes and wetlands. In fact, The Land Between
has more shoreline to area than anywhere else
in Ontario. As is typical of ecotones, The Land
Between is a mix and not uniform and so it has
some of the highest habitat diversity in Ontario.
Globally rare ecosystems such as alvars and
savannahs, fens and meadow marshes are also
found here. Furthermore, its wild lands, at 90%,
are relatively intact compared to anywhere to
the south.
American Crow, Green Heron, Woodchuck……and
the southern limit for other species such as Wolf,
Moose, Martin, River Otter, Common Raven…..
so that The Land Between may provide a reservoir
and refuge for key species during climate change;
and important functions such as seed dispersal,
pollination, and water supplies to main parts of
Ontario too.
Interesting is that associated with Granite rock is
acidic water, while the calcium of Limestone to the
southern extent neutralizes waters making them
more alkaline. It is a meeting point for these waters.
What role then, does this play in water chemistry
and functions further south?
When you think about it, it seems obvious that The
Land Between is different. It stands out and we’ve
known it all along! However, until recently the entire
area was not at all recognized as an entity. It did not
even have a name. Most planning authorities and
ministries have typically classified and managed
ecosystems that are homogeneous: large areas of
similar make-up, and so an ecotone, being an area
of variations, despite its size, was not detected.
Because it was elusive, The Land Between is
in the middle of larger defined ecoregions, and
is at the edge of typical planning boundaries.
Furthermore, The Land Between has a very
distinct culture and heritage in Ontario. Beginning
with First Nation’s value and use of the area as
key east to west travel corridor. Then with postcontact settlement, areas arose of fluctuating and
dispersed agriculture and lumbering. And presently,
the area is known for its serenity and beauty and is
appreciated by residents as well as thousands of
cottagers and visitors for thriving and dynamic landbased tourism and recreation.
Of course, the value of the place is not only in our
appreciation, use and care of it, but this region may
have many important functions as well and there is
much research needed. Because of its placement
and physical make-up, with transitions in elevation
and plant hardiness, The Land Between is at the
northern limit for some species such as White Oak,
2016 Buckhorn District Tourist Association | 41
Authority interests and as a whole, the planning
responsibilities for the area are fragmented. Lastly,
because it was not recognized, until the making
of The Land Between charity, limited information
existed to characterize, understand or value its
functions or monitor changes.
And The Land Between is under accelerating
threats. Development for leisure and retirement
residences is increasing at an alarming rate. It
is pushed by an increase in total population, by
boomers reaching the ages for buying leisure
residences or for moving outside of cities for
retirement living, and by increasing numbers of
commuters.
The Land Between is also pretty easy to damage.
Due to its shallow soils, rapid drainage and
interconnected aquatic resources, it is very
susceptible to contamination. Thin soil means low
absorptive capacity, and so limited capacity to filter
water. Combine this with a harsher climate and the
area has reduced capacity to buffer against injury. It
takes very little development, be it housing, septic
systems, golf courses, roads or trails for motorized
vehicles, to spoil the soils, vegetation and water
quality. Rebounding from any man-made alterations
or damage is also inhibited because of the climate
and structure. Disturbance here is long lasting.

There is a real risk of losing the very reason that
people migrate to and live in the area. If land
use management continues as “business as
usual”, the damage from these trends is certain.
Forces of population change are unavoidable, but
development can be guided.
Today the area is finally gaining recognition and
The Land Between has been identified as the
“final frontier” in conservation in Ontario. This is
because prevention and proper planning is still
possible, but is urgent. So get involved! Visit us at
www.thelandbetween.ca; download our mobile
Tourism app and learn about the region; or support
conservation through stewardship and donations.
