I am proud of all that our students have accomplished this past semester. We have had an unprecedented number of students taking advantage of tutoring and enrichment opportunities both after school and on the weekend. I am deeply impressed by our students’ commitment to academic success. I know that this commitment will continue through the second semester. I also want to take this opportunity to commend our football team on improving to a 5-5 record this year. Head Coach Chris Davis and his staff have worked closely with these young men to ensure that their academics are on target and they are ready for college. Moving into second semester, we are excited for our winter sports to begin. We are also ready for our softball team to take the field and defend their state title! We are proud of all of our scholar-athletes and their remarkable accomplishments. As this is the time of year that we reflect on all for which we are thankful and consider the year ahead, I want to again express what a pleasure it is to be the principal of this awesome school. Our teachers, staff, community partners, and the families we serve make this a wonderful school. I am truly grateful and thankful to be here. I wish you and yours the absolute best in the year ahead. Sincerely, Mr. Clawson Visit our Website @ www.palmbeach.k12.fl.us/PalmBeachGardensHS 2 MAGNETIC ATTRACTIONS! As the first semester draws to a close, our students in the Five Star Magnet Program have much to celebrate! Juniors in all three business magnets had the pleasure of participating in a ROPES-style course at the Tanah Keeta Boy Scout Camp in Tequesta. ROPES is an opportunity for students to develop communication and team building skills, while learning a great deal about their own strengths. The students will be returning to the camp later in the school year for the always-popular “high elements,” which test not only their teamwork skills, but their own personal courage. If you’re not familiar with ROPES, check out the pictures on our website. It is truly an incredible experience. Seniors in the Global Business and Entrepreneurship Magnet recently had the unique opportunity to tour the Port of Palm Beach with Carl Baker, Director of Operations and PBGHS graduate. Students learned about the role of our port in international trade and took particular interest in post-September 11th security measures that keep our nation secure. We thank Mr. Baker for an experience that was both interesting and entertaining! On November 12th, sophomores in the Pre-Medicine Magnet had the opportunity to participate in “A Day in the Life of a Nurse,” a district-wide initiative that gives students the opportunity to explore the nursing profession. Twenty of our students visited Hospice of Palm Beach County for an eye-opening day. Students learned about music and Reiki therapy, toured the facility, met with a psychologist, counted out medications, and more. We are looking forward to participating again next year! As always, the Television, Film, and Radio Magnet students are hard at work on their creative projects. While the sophomores continue to work on GNN, our in-house news program, our radio students are working on research papers on legendary disc jockey Alan Freed, writing scripts for radio dramas, and working on individual brief disc jockey shows. Seniors are creating informative and instructional shows, such as “How to Be a Lady,” “How to Be Awesome,” and “A Day in the Life of a TV Set.” These shows will certainly prove to be interesting! Applications are currently being accepted for the 2011-2012 school year. Applications are available in the magnet office and online. Check out our website, www.fivestarmagnet.org for details. The application deadline is December 17th. Please call the magnet office at 694-7388 if you have any questions! 3 Thank You, Golf Tournament Sponsors!
