For The Parents, Students, Faculty, And The Community Of Palm Beach Gardens High School Bi-Monthly Volume 18 Issue 3 November 2010 Principal’s Message Dear Parents and Students, October is always an exciting month at Palm Beach Gardens Community High School! Our school spirit is unrivaled in Palm Beach County, and our homecoming tradition is proof of this. From our lunchtime competitions to Powderpuff Football, Gator Growl to the dance and football game, we come together and celebrate a long tradition of Gator Pride! We are thrilled to be back at the Swamp for our homecoming football game. Administration Principal Larry Clawson Assistant Principals Leonard Coleman Tara Dellegrotti Michelle Fleming Jerry McAdoo Dr. Richard Williams Community School Director Arty Falk “Gator Tales” November 2010 Published Five Times Per Year Palm Beach Gardens High School 4245 Holly Drive Palm Beach Gardens, FL 33410 Issue # 3 October is also an important month for testing. Students who did not pass the Math or Reading sections of the FCAT as sophomores have another opportunity to take the test. The next chance to take the FCAT will be in April. We are also administering the PSAT on October 13th. The PSAT helps prepare students for the SAT, provides feedback that can be useful in selecting students for Advanced Placement classes, and can even qualify students for scholarships. The PSAT is administered to all sophomores; juniors can also elect to sign up for the test. We have also started meeting with the senior class to provide information about graduation and postsecondary options. It is never too early to start thinking about colleges and careers. I encourage all parents to stay up-todate on their students’ grades by checking EdLine regularly. Please feel free to contact your student’s guidance counselor and teacher if you have any concerns. We also have after-school tutoring every Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. If we work together as a team, we can all look forward to your child’s graduation not as an ending, but as the beginning of a successful career in postsecondary education, the military, or the workforce. Sincerely, Mr. Clawson Visit our Website @ www.palmbeach.k12.fl.us/PalmBeachGardensHS 2 MAGNETIC ATTRACTIONS! Our magnet students are hard at work! Perhaps among the busiest students on campus are our Tourism, Hospitality, and Resort Management Magnet students. Recently, a number of these students had the pleasure of attending a Palm Beach County Hotel and Lodging Association meeting and luncheon at the Breakers. If enjoying the meeting, venue, and spectacular food were not enough, the students were treated to a surprise guest speaker . . . Governor Charlie Crist! Governor Crist acknowledged the students and educators present for the success of programs like the Five Star Magnet Program. On September 29th, all sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the Tourism, Hospitality, and Resort Management Magnet had the pleasure of attending the Annual Student Tourism Conference, this year, held at the West Palm Beach Marriott. This annual conference is unique because it is the only annual event held by industry for the benefit of students in magnets and career academies. As always, PBGHS dominated the event. Students Welsonne Renoir and Shanice Gordon led the Pledge of Allegiance, Principal Larry Clawson addressed the group, and proud Gator alumnus E.J. Turrisi, now a student at Johnson and Wales, shared his reflections on the conference from his perspective as a college student studying hospitality. The Tourism students have had some exciting events, but our Television, Film, and Radio Production Technology sophomores have been producing our school’s television announcements, GNN, with great success. The juniors, having spent all of last year producing GNN, are now learning about the ten most influential television shows of all time, including I Love Lucy and The Twilight Zone. The seniors are working in small groups on public service announcements; all of their products will be entered into competitions. Have you heard about our school store? Thanks to our new business teacher, Tammy Skinner, the Gator Bait store is doing terrific business! The store, which is a function of the Business Supervision class, sells school necessities, spirit items, snacks, and is one place where students can pay their magnet dues. Mrs. Skinner, an avid proponent of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), has also spearheaded what is sure to be a new PBGHS tradition: conducting an FBLA meeting during business class time to ensure that all students know what is going on with FBLA and can get excited about it! Students in the Pre-Medicine Magnet have been doing what they do best: hitting the books! The freshmen are currently taking Biology I Honors and Honors Anatomy and Physiology, where they have recently completed labs on how enzymes work in the body. Our first round of applications for the 2011-2012 school year have already been received! If you know someone interested in applying, please visit our website, www.fivestarmagnet.org, for details.
