– Good morning.
– Good morning, the sleepy voice belonging to Mr. Frenkel, croaked.
– Where are you, I asked, and it was nothing more than a rethorical question, since I assumed that he and Reine
were somewhere nearby Stockholm’s Arlanda airport. After all, we were supposed to meet at 5:30 to catch the
early morning flight to Paris, and from there get on the TGV high speed train to Modane in the French alps.
– Oh shit, my alarm didn’t go off.
– OK, I said. Don’t worry about the flight. Just make the train.

SATURDAY: Most surprisingly, after some 20 minutes they both showed up at the airport. I didn’t even
want to ask how fast they had been driving from Kristoffer’s apartment in central Stockholm. We were
the last people at the check in counter, and of course they were hustling us for every extra kilo in our
luggage. With our names still ringing in the airport speaker system we finally got on the plane.
Sunday: The following morning, bitter disappointment replaced my high hopes.
As I woke up and looked down at the Punta Bagna lift station, situated right below
my balcony, I could see no new snow. Instead, a light, drizzling rain was soaking
the ground. We had a quick, somber, breakfast, and walked out to the lift.
Luckily it hadn’t rained all the way to the peak. We quickly found pockets of
powder among the scarcely spaced larch trees, where we started shooting. Because
of the limited visibility, we stayed among the trees on the front of the mountain
until mid-day. Apparently, nobody seemed to ski off-piste here. Or, as Kristoffer
Frenkel put it:
-I don’t see anybody around who wants to take my powder away from me.
We lunched on pasta and cheeseburgers at the same restaurant as the day before.
Again, huge amounts of cheese. After this gourmand experience, we decided to try
one of the side valleys off the Punta Bagna mountain. We traversed along the upper
ridge on the north-west side of the system and then dove into the trees. The snow
on the steep north-facing slopes was surprisingly deep and by the end of our first
day, none of us could believe the potential of the small ski resort called Valfréjus.
High hopes were definitely restored.
MOnday: Monday morning, however, came with no pleasant surprises. The rain
was pouring down as we stepped out of our apartment door at 9 A.M. We were all
hoping for snow higher up, but not until the old Punta Bagna lift reached above
tree level did we see the first snowflakes. The powder from the day before had been
ruined by the morning rain. The terrain outside the marked runs was unskiable and
the snow stuck to our skis like some hard-core Velcro from the future.
We spent the day shooting a roof jump and a weird kicker in between two huge
larch trees. The boys were throwing side flips and back flips off the small jump, and
we got a few shots worth saving, in spite of depressing conditions. The highlight of
the day was the excellent lunch prepared by the teams’ own gourmet chef, Kristoffer Frenkel; freshly baked cinnamon scones with cream cheese served with fruit and
coffee. No cheese.
TuESday: To some people, free skiing is an almost spiritual experience. The freedom of travelling silently through the wild, mountainous, landscape is sometimes
overwhelming. Writing about it is tough. About as tough as dancing about architecture.
Anyhow, a day of blue skies, sunshine and powder turns would make any skier
happy. And so were we, because Tuesday was such a day. We skied mostly above
tree level, and tried to avoid the lower parts of the mountain where the snow had
frozen to a thick crust.
On the backside of Punta Bagna, the morning light shone on a spotless southeast face leading to a blue piste. Unknowing that the lifts on the backside were
closed – for no obvious reasons – we hurdled down in big turns. (Even though the
pistes had been prepared, the lifts remained closed for our whole stay.)
It meant that we had to ski the piste, that turned into an infinite ski road, all the
way down and around the mountain back to the Punta Bagna lift station. Hardly
a TGV-like experience…
Back on the mountain we spent the afternoon skiing in the frontside ”bowl”.
While we where shooting powder turns and flips, the shadows grew deeper and started racing upwards until the light disappeared behind the sharp peaks. It was time to
get back to the apartment to enjoy Kristoffer’s boiled chicken and vegetable stew. The
chicken was so tender, we suspected he had marinated it in his skiing boots.
THuRSday: Next morning, the lifts stayed closed until 11:30 because of avalanche control. The pisteurs were blasting everywhere on the mountain to secure
the pistes from potential avalanches. We skied the trees on the frontside of the
Punta Bagna, where we had skied the first day. The snow was really deep about
halfway down, but towards the bottom of the run we where hitting the old, hard,
crust underneath the powder. When you were least expecting it, you slammed into
one of the frozen death cookies, lurking under the treacherous smoothness. Well,
at least the weather forecast for tomorrow said bluebird, and tomorrow was our
last day at Valfréjus.

In Paris, we got on the TGV. Half the population of France was already on the
train. It seemed like everyone had to go somewhere else in this country this weekend. Which is understandable with the super-efficient high-speed trains in mind.
Four hours and you’re in the Alps.
We were bound for the small ski resort Valfréjus in the Maurienne Valley. Why?
It looked good on the trail map, and it’s always exciting to explore ”unknown”
territory in the Alps. After all, the Alps have a lot more to offer than Chamonix,
Verbier and St. Anton. We were to find out, that abundant servings of cheese was
one of these things.
The serpentine road leading up to Valfréjus from Modane, where we got off the
train, offered a nice view of the valley below. We got off the bus and were welcomed
to our apartment by Sara Rönnberg, the third skier from the 8848 team, who lives
in Chamonix. Later that evening, while we were having pizza, a first of a series of
meals overflowing with French cheese, at a local restaurant, large snowflakes were
starting to fall outside the window.

SCORING bIG TIME
FRIDAY: Clear sky. We got dressed, had breakfast and walked out to the lift at 9 A.M. sharp. The
line of people waiting to get on the old Punta Bagna lift grew by the minute, but nothing seemed
to happen. The iron door remained closed and no liftie was in sight. Perhaps he was enjoying a
cheese breakfast somewhere.
You know when you walk home with someone from a bar and you think you got Bagna peak and were now considering to ski one of the colouirs right beneath the
