Remembering...Gary
Howse
A
fter news broke of Gary Howse’ death on Sunday, August 3rd, family, friends, employees and colleagues had
a heavy heart. His impact both professionally and personally on everyone he knew will never be forgotten. He will forever be
celebrated for his impact on the beauty industry, but for those who knew him personally these are the attributes that he will be
remembered by: Visionary, philanthropic, wise, encouraging, inspiring, passionate and a positive force of nature.
Howse’s inspiration and passion for the industry began while he attended high school in Nisqually, Washington. As 4H Club
president his interests and talents for coloring the horses manes and tails eventually led him to pursue a career in the beauty
profession. He quickly advanced through several Seattle-area salons until he met Manuel Benevich. Their common interest and
vision to raise the bar for the salon experience as a whole, plus led them to establish the Gary Manuel Salon in Seattle in 1979. Together for the next 30+ years they
expanded to three locations in the greater Seattle area and established the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute. Gary’s commitment to offering furthering education has
allowed the institute to train more than 300 beauty professionals annually.
Howse’s love and passion did not stop with the beauty industry. As a philanthropic leader within the community, he devoted much of his time and energy to many
great causes, such as the Lifelong AIDS Alliance, the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance and Earth Month. Howse believed that it does not take an army or a great deal of
effort to make a huge impact for these and many other causes. Even after his untimely death he encourages others to donate in his memory and honor. While Howse
faced many challenges as an openly gay man, business entrepreneur and educational mentor, his positive outlook and example gave him strength to preservere.
He gave others solidity to grow and succeed.

As I started in Salon Services in January of 1981, one of the salons that I pursued as a consultant, was Gary Manuel Salon. They were on the fifth floor of
the Fifth Avenue, Seattle. It was much smaller, but I knew I wanted to work with them. I called on the salon every week for two years prior to any major
shift in our working relationship but we became friends as we built our relationship of sharing while learning how to build our respective businesses.
Once Turning Point had enlightened many to the key business practices that were necessary in the development of success, I created a networking
group for the attendees to share their knowledge/experiences with one another. Both Gary and Manuel were extremely active and participatory in
the twenty five years of this group, Club 40. You knew if there was a need he would be the first one to step up. The annual Croquet Tournament that
they initiated to raise money for Northwest Aids in the 1980’s, brought our industry together
for a fun, charitable and collaborative awareness. The croquet events lasted for twelve years.
When I married my husband, everyone thought Gary was my groom due to his attire, which
was a tuxedo. He was always dressed in fashionable attire and to impress. In the mid 80’s we
were asked to create a skit for a Sebastian Experience in Maui. I wish I had the picture as we
were Diana Boss and the Extreme’s lip syncing “Stop in the Name of Love”, you know who the
Boss was, Gary…on stage with Karen Shea and me as his Extremes, so much fun.
Personally, the impact that Gary had in my life and my son’s, is huge. Gary always had a twinkle
in his eye and gave the gift of confidence by welcoming you into his circle, which was large.
Gary was always the best to travel with as he always knew the hip places to eat, dance or enjoy.
One such trip was with Sebastian to raise money for the Rainforest with Sting at Carnegie Hall
and dinner at Tavern on the Green. The last trip we enjoyed together was to London, I had
submitted the Gary Manuel Salon as nominee in 2004 for Best Business Award. They were
chosen as a winner and invited me to join them.
When Wella purchased Sebastian Gary Manuel Salon chose Wella as their color line during
the three years we carried the vendor. When we were terminated, Gary was the first to call me
to offer support to get as many color options as possible for him to test. He then personally
chose our next color line. It was to be our mainstay with both our companies until it was
discontinued two years ago.
When my son, Jeremy, went to cosmetology school, he set his focus on Gary Manuel. When he Sting Rainforest Event in New York Tavern on The Green
graduated, he apprenticed with Gary for several years; he was so inspired by his knowledge, 1991 with John Sebastian, Gary Howse, Karen Shea,
creativity and fun he embodied. Jeremy worked at Gary Manuel for eight years. Gary told me Beverly Moreland and Kathryn Remijan that Jeremy was like his son and that same feeling was reciprocated by Jeremy.
I am so proud of all that Gary Manuel has accomplished in their thirty five years of business
with their vision of salons and school to become the pillar of business they are today. The I had the honor of meeting Gary 27 years ago and
commitment Gary made to the industry is remarkable. What Gary did outside the salon is my memories are filled with a “gentle” but direct
spectacular, as he was an advocate for many causes. Beyond his continued charity work with man. Gary’s inquisitive nature made me always stop,
the above list, he was also involved with the Heritage House, Bailey Boushay House, Chicken reflect and try to improve myself as a human being.

What makes Jaazz Salon different?

through an extensive apprenticeship program. We also work together
as a team, everyone pitches in and helps to make it a great experience
for our guests.
What was your inspiration for this shoot?
My strengths lie in creating classic, beautiful hair, so I decided to
enter the contemporary classic category. I have always loved old
Hollywood glamour and I couldn’t think of anything more classic that
Alfred Hitchcock! I loved the mood and lighting, and recreating them
with the photographer was amazing.

Advice to stylists?
Just do it!! Seeing your work in a photograph is so different than
viewing it in 3D…. there is no place to hide. It makes you a better
stylist and artist.

Woodland is the land of age-old architecture, where light and shadow dances, always in motion. Their play creates patterns and
transform spaces, giving them a new appearance over and over again. Every surface is painted with new effects by a whispering
breeze, rays of sunlight, the trickle of rain and soft morning mist. Woodland is a land of silence and noise; rustling branches
followed by quiet solitude. It is the revelation of naturally changing textures. Woodland is the changing of moods; the poetry of
nature; the elegance of an unexpected movement; the age-old attraction between light and dark.
This collection has a very editorial feeling with simple, feminine styling that represents a modern woman. Even though it is
modern, the collection still connects deeply with the beauty of nature and the environment. The looks range from airy and
dream-like to geometric and structured yet all connect with beautiful shapes and colors.
We used Flamboyage and a combination of all the Davines color lines to create the general feel of the collection.
The colors are dark and light natural hues with intense iridescent effects created by using bright orange and yellow or green and
blue from Pure Colour from the A New Colour line. By using Flamboyage we were able to create unique color effects yet easily
keep track of the progress due to the see-through material. To enhance the cut & color and finish each look to convey the mood of
the collection, styling products from the new More Inside line were used.

A non-profit breast cancer foundation supporting research in the Pacific NW, benefiting women everywhere
WHAT IS THE WINGS OF KAREN - 2014 BRA DASH 5K?
The Bra Dash 5k is more than a 5k, it’s a race to save lives.
100% of proceeds will directly fund promising breast cancer research locally. Participants are
encouraged to wear a bra over their race day shirt and toss it triumphantly at the finish line,
symbolizing the spirit needed to find a cure. A fun, family event where all are welcome.
Actually, we CAN!
Our Brand Development Manager Stacy Kurtz believes just
that! As an active leadership member with Wings of Karen,
Stacy is able to fulfill her passion for helping others while
making a positive influence in her community.
Wings of Karen is a local grassroots organization that has a
mission to fund promising breast cancer research in the Pacific
NW and is committed to finding a cure, while empowering
and educating women with a positive, helping hand.
She was a Sophomore in high school when she first learned
of her mother’s breast cancer diagnosis and little did she
know she would witness her mom face this battle two more
times in the following 20 years. Being by her side for many of her mom’s appointments
throughout this journey, she learned many powerful lessons, like be aware of your body
and ask questions! She is proud to call her mother a three time breast cancer “thrivor”
and is honored to work by her side daily at Salon Services. Witnessing the effects of
breast cancer not only through her mother’s experiences but now within her own
sisterhood continues to ignite her drive to fundraise for breast cancer research, with
faith that someday soon we will find a cure to end all cancer.
“In March of 2013, Wings of Karen awarded its first grant of $30,000 to Seattle Cancer
Care Alliance to fund a pilot program that studies new methods of detection in
younger women. In total, Wings of Karen has granted over a quarter of a million
dollars to promising breast cancer research. Without our funding, many of these
projects would not be realized – including the Wings of Karen Cancer Vaccine
study, led by Dr. Nora Disis at the UW, which we contributed $100,000 to this year,
enabling the project to move into trials. We also gave $100,000 to the Dr. MaryClaire King lab to study the genetic pathway of breast cancer that is affecting many
women being diagnosed in their 20’s and 30’s. Dr. King is famous for her discovery
of the BRCA1 and 2 genes, the only known genetic links to breast cancer.”
Wings of Karen is proud to support the breast cancer research and clinical program of
the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance, a powerful collaboration between UW Medicine and
Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and other life-saving institutions across the
Pacific Northwest.
