Willow Oaks Country Club Kids Newsletter Spring /Summer 2009 Program Guide Inside Win an ipod Shuffle details on page 3 Big Changes in 2009 Hello to our Willow Oaks families! I know that everyone is looking forward to spring and the changes it brings- the warmer weather, the pending pool season, and all the activities. The staff at Willow Oaks is working to bring our young members some exciting changes as well. We hope that you enjoy the improvements and welcome your feedback. The Club will now publish two youth newsletters per year: one will be a spring and summer guide and the other will be for fall and winter activities. You will also notice that there is a new youth newsletter format that has changes to the layout and content. Some of these changes include: • Youth friendly color format and design, • Advanced athletic programs and clinics added for golf and tennis, • “Kick Off to Golf” day to encourage more participation in youth golf, • Breakdown of activities by grade to help parents with enrollment, • Increased focus on outdoor and adventure activities, and • More details regarding each specific event I am, also, pleased to announce that joining the staff this year will be a seasonal Youth Coordinator. It is my hope that we will continue to make improvements to our family programs here at Willow Oaks. By the way, don’t forget to participate in the contest to name the youth newsletter! Spring/Summer 2009 3 Luncheon and Trip to the Theatre Featuring Annie Saturday, May 9th 12:30pm Lunch at Willow Oaks 3:00pm Curtain @ Empire Theatre Join us for this popular WOCC event. Your journey begins at 12:30pm with lunch at the Club. After dessert, you’ll receive a “theatre pack” and then we will caravan (transportation not included) to the Empire Theatre for the showing of Theatre IV’s production of Annie. “The popular comic strip heroine takes center stage in one of the world’s best loved Broadway musicals. Annie’s a spunky orphan determined to find the parents who left her on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage. In the course of her adventures she foils mean Miss Hannigan, befriends President Franklin D. Roosevelt and finds a new family in billionaire Oliver Warbucks, his personal secretary Grace Farrell and a lovable mutt named Sandy. Featuring “Hard Knock Life,” “Little Girls,” and the crowd pleasing anthem, “Tomorrow,” Annie is, “big, warm-hearted, funny and overflowing!” - New York Post. Suggested for ages 4 and up. There is a lunch-only price of $12.00++ for adults and $8.00++ for children for the benefit of season ticket holders or those who just want to enjoy a nice lunch. Children two and under attending the play will be charged $20.00 for the cost of the ticket only. Ticket fees for late cancellations will be billed to the member if they cannot be resold. 4 WOCC Kids Newsletter Kids Cooking Classes 6:00 to 7:30pm Chef Eric will be stirring up more culinary fun this summer. Each hands-on class includes dinner and is geared toward kindergarteners through second grade. Reservations are required. Call 272-1451 to save your spot. Parents are welcome to stay for the fun. Breakfast for Dinner Tuesday, June 9th We will be making muffins, pancakes, and waffles. Participants will be doing some cooking on hot griddles. Cost is $14.95++. Limited to 24 students. Fruits from Around the World Tuesday, August 4th Taste and learn about different exotic fruits from around the world. Participants will make fruit smoothies among other delicious treats. Cost is $17.95++ and is open to 30 students. Pitch - A - Tent Night Friday, July 10th 6:00pm We are roughing it Western style at this annual WOCC family event. Pitch your tent behind the Corral (aka Clubhouse) and get ready for an evening of fun on the range! Schedule of activities: • 6 - 7:00pm Set up your tent • 7 - 8:00pm Cookout by the Corral • 8 - 10:00pm Recreational Activities including campfire songs with a real cowboy and movie under the stars • 10:00pm Lights Out • 7:00am Breakfast You need to bring: tent, sleeping bag, pillow, flashlight, toiletries, swimsuit, towel, a change of clothes, an adult or guardian, and your cowboy hats. The cost is $11.95++. All ages welcomed. Rain date is Friday, July 17th. Spring/Summer 2009 5 Adventure and Aquatics Camp This year’s Aquatic and Adventure camps are back and better than ever. We have combined the best of both camps for the ultimate summer enjoyment! All camp participants will need: bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, athletic shoes, and a plain white T-shirt (for tie-dye). Week 1: June 30 th 9:00am to 1:00pm – July 3rd Kindergarten-2nd grade $175/ participant Join us for a week of tree climbing, hiking, paper boat building, Wii sports, Olympic events, scavenger hunt, tie-dye shirt making, intro to snorkeling, and pool games. The camp will include snack and lunch. Participants will meet in the pool lobby each morning and we will go from there. Register at the Kids’ Kick-off to Summer or after April 19th by calling the Fitness Center at 228-4143. Week 3: July 28 – July 31st 9:00am to 1:00pm th 6th- 8th grade $ 250/participant Same as above. 6 WOCC Kids Newsletter Junior Sports Camps Back by popular demand our sports camps continue to be a wonderful way to introduce your kids to two exciting sportsTennis and Golf. The sports camp will follow a different time frame this year due to the great responses we have had in the past and the lack of space to accommodate the demand. The camps are best suited for kindergarten through sixth grade. The cost for each camp will be $120. We will begin taking sign ups during the Kids’ Kickoff on Sunday, April 19th. Each camp is limited to the first 30 kids to sign up. The following are the dates and times for the 2009 sports camps. You are invited to join us this year for our 2nd year of Kids Mini Camp. Get a feel for how fun camp can be in an environment you already know and love. Each day we will have a different craft activity of pottery painting, jewelry making, tie-dying, and other fun events; snack time; and fitness time consisting of moon bounce, Tumblebus, Kinder Gym and other athletic events. Registration is limited to 12 participants and the cost is $125/child. All participants must be fully potty trained. Register at the Kids’ Kick-off to Summer or after April 19th by calling the Fitness Center at 228-4143. Participants should be dressed in casual attire and athletic shoes and meet in the Fitness Center lobby. Spring/Summer 2009 7 Junior Golf Kickoff Saturday, May 9th 1:00 to 3:00pm Come join us as we kick off the golf season for our Juniors! We will meet on the driving range where we’ll have clinics, exhibitions, challenge skill contests, putting contests, food, music, and more! There is no cost for the fun and it is open to all ages. Don’t miss out on the best way to get your kids excited about the great game of golf. Free After School Golf Clinics May 13th, 20th, 27th June 3rd, 10th, 17th Come out after school and get to know some of your fellow junior golfers and get instruction on future camp topics. Open to all 1st graders - high school Junior golfers. This is a casual and fun “get to know” kind of program primarily focused on having fun with golf in anticipation of the upcoming summer golf programs. Meet us on the driving range from 4:00-5:00pm. Fridays 9 Ju 0 0 2 Junior Play Days This is a great opportunity for your child to get to play the golf course with minimum supervision. Play Days are Fridays and will start at 8:30am; your child must be capable of moving around the golf course at a normal pace of play. The dates are as follows: June 26th July 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, 31st August 7th, 14th, 21st 8 WOCC Kids Newsletter G r o ni Junior Golf Camps Tuesdays and Thursdays Junior golf camps are designed for more focused instructional time. Each camp will cover the basics of golf and the fundamentals of the golf swing. The camps be geared towards instruction and will combine activities that will also enhance your child’s golf game. e.g. putting contests, bunker blasts, etc. All of our camps will emphasize fun while learning the game of golf. Our goal is to give each junior golfer a confidence in their golf game that will allow them to play on the course with little supervision. A variety of camps have been created to help juniors from first grade to high school. Group Lessons Morning: Three sessions will be offered with six levels of instruction each, including Mommy & Me. Each session consists of eight half-hour lessons held Monday through Thursday beginning June 22nd. The cost is $50.00. Group Lessons Evening: Three sessions will be offered with six levels of instruction each, including Mommy & Me. Each session consists of six 40-minute lessons held Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday beginning June 9th. The cost is $50.00. Private Lessons: Private lessons offer one-on-one instruction for the beginning swimmer or stroke refinement for more advanced swimmers. The cost is $25.00 per lesson or 4 lessons for $85.00. Private lessons are offered throughout the season. Splash into Summer Pool Party Thursday, June 18th 6:00 to 9:00pm Come celebrate the first day of summer and help us kick off a fun filled summer at the pool with music, games, and a DJ. All ages are invited. Parents’ Night Out Thursday, July 30th 6:00 to 9:00pm Are baby-sitters getting too expensive or too hard to find? Then we have the answer. Bring your little ones to the pool while you enjoy dinner in the Clubhouse. We will keep the kids busy with an evening of games both in and out of the water. The snack bar will be open. This event is for children age 3 years and up. We will also take a few refreshing sprinkler breaks along the way to cool off. The cost is $129 a session and includes a T-shirt. Dropshots and Smashers Tennis Camp 10:00am to noon Session 1: June 29th - July 2nd Session 3: July 27th - 30th Session 2: July 13th - 16th Session 4: August 10th - 13th All levels are invited to this fun camp geared toward pre-kindergartners through 1st graders. Campers will be introduced to tennis using the Quickstart method. The two-hour camp will focus on tennis skills, hand-eye coordination, and fun. The camp is $89 a session and includes a T-shirt. Spring/Summer 2009 13 Fu n s tnes i F Parent/Child Fun Run Saturday, May 2nd 8:00 am Kids through 7th grade and parents with toddlers (age 3) Calling all families! Kids and parents are invited to join us for our 6th Annual Parent /Child Fun Run. This 1 mile loop on the cart path is fun for both parents and children alike and helps to set a good example for lifetime wellness. The cost is $ 20.00++ per child. Fourth grade and under are required to have a parent/guardian participate with them. All participants will receive a T-shirt and a medal. Meet at the 10th tee for the race to begin. Refreshments and prizes at the finish. Register at the Kids’ Kick-Off to Summer or forms are available in the Fitness Center. Rain Date is Saturday, May 30th. Calling All Athletes: Did you know your off-season is a very important part of the sport you love? Let us show you how to maximize your athletic ability to compete at your best. Programs are available to enhance performance in all sports. Give the Fitness Center a call and let one of our trainers design a program for you. We’re back to defend last season’s championship title and hope to be bigger and better. For that to happen, we need you! Sign-ups for swim team will be at the Kids’ Kick-off to Summer on April 19th. The swim team season will run tentatively from May 18th through the end of July. Meets are tentatively scheduled for Tuesday evenings from mid-June through July. The swim team practices are held 4:30 - 5:30pm Monday - Friday until school lets out. Morning practices begin in June from 8:30 - 10:00am. The swim team fee is $ 90/swimmer.
